Celebrating Rauschenberg
Florida Southwestern State College’s Bob Rauschenberg Gallery presents the exhibition, ‘Rauschenberg at 100: As Large as the World’ is, celebrating the birth centenary of the late legendary artist, gallerynamesake, and longtime Captiva Island resident, Robert Rauschenberg.
The exhibition is the first solo Rauschenberg show curated specifically for the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery Annex space. The title is drawn from the artist’s own deeply-held belief and profound philosophy on the interconnectedness of local and global perspectives.
The exhibition focuses on the artist’s deep ties to Southwest Florida, featuring locally-produced and privately-held works, most never before exhibited and spanning several pivotal decades of his career, including:
Autobiography: A monumental ‘self portrait’ triptych created in 1968, the same year that Rauschenberg purchased his first property and home on Captiva Island.
Unique paintings and transfer drawings: featuring original works from the acclaimed Spreads, Borealis, Anagram, and Runt series.
The Moon Museum: A collective artwork featuring contributions
The exhibition, Timeless Mucha: The Magic of Line, is on view at the Boca Raton Museum of Art thru March 1.

S A PLAYER, BRAD RALPH PLAYED A LOT OF HOCKEY for a variety of minor league clubs. The list ranges from the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League to the Springfield Falcons and Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, to even Alleghe HC, a club based in the Italian league. But much of his time was spent as a player in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). The Mississippi Sea Wolves, Augusta Lynx, Dayton Bombers, Columbia Inferno, and Charlotte Checkers were the teams he suited up for before retiring after the 2008-09 season with Charlotte. However, Ralph has found his best years behind the bench, coaching the ECHL’s Florida Everblades. The team has essentially been the cream of the crop, winning three consecutive
Kelly Cup championships (2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24), the first team to have accomplished that feat in league history. It’s proof that the Everblades have been one of the better teams since Ralph started coaching the team in 2016-17. He says the past decade has been a whirlwind of sorts.
“We’ve been fortunate to have some long years playing into June, but it’s been a lot of fun,” Ralph says. “Winning is fun, and I’ve been fortunate enough to be surrounded by great players, good staff, and a loyal fan base. So it’s been a great 10 years.”
Ralph, who won Coach of the Year honors with the Everblades in his sophomore season coaching the club, relocated to Southwest Florida after spending a year in British Columbia coaching the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League, a tier dedicated to primarily junior players in their late teens. The coach says that life away from the

rink in Florida might have been the biggest change for him in terms of the players.
“I would say the biggest adjustment for me was just managing the players, understanding their tendencies when we weren’t at the rink,” he says. “Just in terms of golf or fishing or just going to the beach. Incorporating outdoor activities into our daily lives. I had to have a better understanding of the recovery process for them. I’ve always been a big believer in enjoying life away from the rink. I think it allows players to come to the rink with more energy, more enthusiasm, and a deeper love for the game. I encourage anything away from the rink to enhance their season and experience. Just do whatever they have to do and still perform well on the ice.”
The Florida Everblades, which were founded back in 1998, have been the epitome of consistency in their history, missing the playoffs just once over that time. They’ve also been to seven Kelly Cup finals, winning four championships, including the recent three-peat. Ralph says there are a myriad of reasons why the Everblades are successful.
“I think we’ve got great ownership, we’ve got great leadership with Craig Brush (team President and CEO),” Ralph says. “It’s a lot of hockey-first decisions. We’re able to attract good hockey players. I was really a student of winning as a player and as a coach. I was pretty dialed in in terms of what is successful at this level. I think when you combine that with the quality of life that’s down here in Southwest Florida, it really is a heck of a package. We get good hockey players and guys really enjoy being here and playing for the Florida Everblades. That goes a long way when you’re grinding and playing 95 games a year.”
the success we’re having right now. We’re in first place in our division. We’ve got a good hockey team. In this league, and probably in any league, there’s a lot of turnover with injuries. So you’ve got to have depth and withstand the ups and downs of a season. But it’s a great group of guys. We’re finding the back of the net right now, and we’ve got two great goalies. I think we’re certainly a contender. I like to think we’re a contender every year. But it’s a long road.”
The Everblades also have an NHL affiliate in the St. Louis Blues, meaning the Blues can send players in their organization (or on the AHL affiliate club) down to the Everblades. Or they can call them up depending on injuries or other situations. It’s the team’s fourth NHL affiliate in the decade Ralph has been with Florida. But Ralph knows ties to a NHL club isn’t a quick fix for ECHL success.
We do the best we can to give our players the opportunity to perform at their best at any given game.
The Everblades, which also won the 2025 Team Award of Excellence for the fifth consecutive year in the ECHL, have also been a success at the box office. Of course, winning will put people in seats. But Ralph says the team from the top down has done a terrific job in terms of gaining and maintaining fan support.
“After Covid, we started winning championships, and it improved,” Ralph says. I think the front office does a heck of a job selling corporate sponsorships and selling season tickets. The support here has been awesome; it continues to evolve, and we continue to get new season ticket holders, which I think is a great sign. People enjoy the games and the caliber, the entertainment that we provide. It’s a great package for Southwest Florida as there’s no real major league sport in the area. We’ve cornered that market to a certain extent.”
Unlike National Hockey League teams who primarily travel by chartered jets for away games, the East Coast Hockey League relies primarily on the bus. Ralph says the Hoffman group (which owns the club) does a great job determining whether the players would be better off on the bus or flying to further destinations in the league. The Everblades play 72 regular season games. Often those games are on the weekends and sometimes can be three consecutive games in three days, which would test the physical stamina of any hockey player regardless of level.
“It’s a grind, there’s no doubt about it,” Ralph says. “But the ownership group makes hockey-first decisions when we’re traveling, whether flying or on the bus. We do the best we can to give our players the opportunity to perform at their best at any given game. I think that goes a long way. And obviously, the results speak for themselves.”
“We’ve got a great culture, great environment, the guys play hard for each other,” he says. “We’re having fun. I think that’s a big part of
“Part of my mindset as a coach is we control the controllable,” he says. “That’s by signing really good ECHL-contracted players, and then whatever players are sent down to us only benefits our team and helps us. But we can’t rely on these NHL teams to supply us with great hockey players. We’ve been fortunate to get a lot of good players from those teams.”
The St. Louis link is sort of a full circle moment for Ralph. On October 5, 2000, Ralph played his first and only NHL game as a member of the Phoenix Coyotes, who were playing the St. Louis Blues that evening. Ralph played about five minutes in the game and didn’t register a point as Phoenix won the contest. But the memory is something he’s cherished dearly.
“I certainly remember it,” he recalls fondly. “I think when I signed my contract the intent was for me to play the home opener and we beat St. Louis. I didn’t play much. And obviously, I didn’t take advantage of my opportunities there. It was a short-lived career in the NHL, but there were a lot of good memories, a lot of great guys on that hockey team that treated me really well. So I’ve got nothing but good memories about that game. And a lot of great experiences that I’ve passed along to my players that I hope can help them when they get their opportunity.”
That Phoenix club featured a lot of players who remained in the game either as coaches or general managers. Ralph says that coaching was something he was told he’d be great at, but didn’t consider until after his playing days were done.
“For most players, the goal is to be a player and win the Stanley Cup,” he says. “You’re not really thinking of coaching. It’s more when your playing career is over and just trying to figure out what direction to go in. I just wanted some stability. I didn’t want to move around the rest of my life like I did as a player. But pretty quickly after my playing career ended, I realized I missed the game. I don’t know if I had a passion for coaching, but a couple of games into my first season, I recognized I was probably built to be a coach more than even being a player.”
Ralph—who says the first Kelly Cup championship was a “lights out achievement” while the third was “validation; it wasn’t luck or chance”—says he’s ready for whatever comes his way. That includes the annual Teddy Bear toss that took place December 12 in Estero. So how does he avoid getting hit with so many plush dolls?
“Score early,” Ralph says with a laugh. “As a player or team, you’re anxious. You want fans to have a good experience and unload those teddy bears onto the ice. We all know it’s for a great cause, and that adds to the excitement and the nervousness the players will deal with. We all get hit by them; that’s all part of the fun.” •

arrett Dutton, better known as genre-bending musician G. Love, found himself with some of the most iconic hill country blues musicians around one evening during the pandemic. The late night recording session—featuring him alongside Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), Cam Kimbrough, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Christone ‘KingFish’ Ingram, and R.L. Boyce—was a memorable one-off evening while G.Love was working on what would become 2022’s Philadelphia, Mississippi album. Many suspected nothing would come of it.
Fortunately, thanks to the wonders of technology, G. Love is back with a truly great album entitled Ode To R.L., a 10-track effort that used that session as a creative catalyst while also honoring Boyce, who died in 2023 at age 68.
“I’m really happy with this record,” the musician says. “It’s different in a lot of ways for me because this record is kind of like more of a hip-hop record. It’s beats. And it’s very interesting on the musical side. It’s a record that’s made in memory and to honor R.L. Boyce who passed since that recording session. There’s a lot of really cool things behind the story of it.”
G.Love says he wasn’t sure what would come out of the jam session. Originally, the goal was to use the session as an album in and of itself. But a night of incredibly solid musicianship didn’t exactly translate into a fully fleshed out concept for a record.
“We had this amazing session,” G. Love says of the recording done in Coldwater, Mississippi. “It was during Covid, so the session itself became like a summit, a hill country blues summit. So R.L. came through and we had this epic night. Just drinking whiskey, smoked a blunt, and hung out. He played a whole set of music. We said, ‘Let’s go back and make a record for R.L. out of that session!’
“We started going through it, and we said, ‘Man, that whiskey got the best of us.’ There were a lot of great moments but not enough to make a cohesive record for him.”
G.Love then hooked up with Logan Tichnor, a young producer from Orleans, Massachusetts. What transpired was what appears throughout Ode To R.L., namely samples of the sessions which G. Love used to create new material.
“I said, ‘Hey man, if you ever get the notion, take this session and chop it up, see if you can make something with it,’” he says. “He came back with this first track that ended up being this song called ‘Gumbo.’ He put it on, and immediately the sound was magic. I started writing to it right away. Every time he would put a beat up that he made, it would call its own lyrics and message to the feel of the music. It was very cool. I was very inspired. The fabric of the music is unique and original. It’s unlike anything anyone has heard before, and I’m really proud of that.”
The artist hadn’t met Boyce prior to the jam session, but came away with a newfound respect for the hill country blues performer.
“The way he was as a person,” G. Love says. “He had a great sense of humor. He was a sweet guy and really cool. I wondered if I was going to feel nervous because I spent my whole life being a student of the blues. I was maybe having a little insecurity getting to play with someone like R.L. There’s a blues culture of music and he’s an African American man from Mississippi. That’s the real deal blues. Hill country blues is the rural, authentic blues. He just made me feel so comfortable. I just jumped right in the pool and ’started swimming.”
Ode To R.L. features 10 songs and a few guest musicians including Boyce, Dickinson, and vocalist Evan Nicole Bell (who appears on the opening ‘Feel Me Better’) among others. The title track explains the session that fueled the album, while ‘Started Young’ came from something G. Love heard somewhere and jotted down.
“It’s interesting because when I wrote it down, it was meant to be a funny thing,” he says. “I started young, and then I started over. I started a family when I was 29, but then I started a new family when I was 44. So I did start young and I started over.”
As for a favorite, G. Love isn’t leaning towards just one. He loves ‘Feel Me Better’ as well as ‘Don’t Trip,’ the latter written back in 2018 and sounding as timely now as it ever has given the current political climate. “Obviously, it talks about the State of the Union, and it’s especially poignant to me now,” he says.
Meanwhile, recent shows have seen G. Love blend material from Ode To R.L. such as ‘Weekends are for Making Love’ and ‘Stay Awhile’ along with signatures from his illustrious career. However, in 2026, he’ll be focusing more on songs from his 2006 effort Lemonade. The musician says the 20th anniversary of the album’s original release felt like a great time to revisit the record.
“That’s one of our biggest records,” he says. “Now that we’ve been around the block a couple of times, the anniversaries of some or all of our records are now into the 20-year and 30-year anniversaries from the ‘90s and early 2000s. That’s just a fun record. That record has a lot of songs that are great songs to play live. It has, at least according to Spotify, my biggest song, ‘Rainbow’ on it. And it’s just such a great vibe. It’s going to be a fun tour. We’ll be sprinkling in some of the new record, celebrating Lemonade, and playing some other hits. It’s going to be a great show with the songs that people love to hear.”
One of the odder but amusing events G.Love experienced this year was seeing two categories on the game show Jeopardy! beside each other in one program being ‘G. Love’ and ‘Special Sauce’.
He’s also no stranger to the Fort Myers area as his parents lived on Sanibel for some time. Unfortunately, a few years ago, the couple lost their home in a hurricane, resulting in them relocating versus trying to rebuild. He says he’s enjoyed playing at the Point Ybel Brewing Company as well as the Beer in the Bushes festival benefiting the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation. “I really miss it because we love Sanibel and Fort Myers,” he says.
While much of the early part of 2026 will be spent on the road, G.Love and Tichnor might be teaming up again for another studio album. He says the different type of synergy has resulted in lots of ideas.
“The creative process for R.L. was very refreshing because it was just a different songwriting process; not sitting down with my acoustic guitar like I’ve been doing my whole life,” he says. “Instead, I was writing over hip-hop beats. So, as an artist, it was great for me to mix it up. I’ve really enjoyed that.”
“As we finished that project Logan has been making beats. Not just different beats that didn’t have the R.L. thing happening, but
just different hip-hop beats. I love his beats, they keep calling these lyrics out of me. So we’ve got a whole other record that’s in the works. We’re going to start looking at who we want to collaborate with on that record. I think that record will have a lot more guest artists than Ode To R.L. does.”
Perhaps one of the odder but amusing events G. Love experienced this year was seeing two categories on the long-running game show Jeopardy! beside each other in one program being ‘G. Love’ and ‘Special Sauce.’
“Oh, it was hilarious,” he says. “I think we got a fan who works at Jeopardy! because that was the second time. We were the answer to another question last year or the year before. This year we got two categories. My phone blew up when that show aired.”
“We’re really in a great place. The momentum of the records and putting on some of our greatest shows ever. The vibes are great, and it’s all because of the fan base that have supported us since the early ‘90s. And the new fans we make along the way. We’re just very thankful and happy about our momentum right now.”
Finally, G. Love has always found Bob Dylan as a source of inspiration. He says he’s not sure if he’ll find himself on the road in his seventies or eighties like Dylan currently is, but he certainly lauds performers who continue to perform in their twilight years.
He says, “I think the thing about us musicians is you just do this until you can’t do it. It’s like this with everybody in life. In life, when you’re a parent and you have little kids, you have to go to work to provide for them. But you don’t really want to be working. You want to be home with your kids. That’s not the way life works. And when you get older, you retire, but your kids are gone. Maybe you’ve been married a long time and you’re best friends with your spouse.
“I think guys like Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson don’t do it because they need the money. They’re doing it because they just love to play. It keeps them young, keeps them going, and gives them a purpose. I’d imagine that maybe that’s how it’s going to look for me. I love touring, but maybe it would also be great to tour a little less. Either way, we’re going on a big one this year. And we will certainly be ready to jam for the good people of Fort Myers.” •

a daughter’s quest for the truth
Aby Nancy Stetson
rtis Henderson adored her father.
A charming man with a ready grin, Tilton Lamar Chester, Jr., who went by his middle name, was a natural-born leader with a devil-may-care attitude. Others called him a hero, describing him as generous, intelligent, a man of class and style.
According to Henderson, he was a man “who could fix things, who was at ease with a hammer and a hacksaw. He could take apart a truck engine and raise a barn in the same day.”
Born into poverty, Chester became a carpenter, an aircraft mechanic, then a commercial pilot for Eastern Airlines.
But what Henderson didn’t know as a young child was that her father was also a drug smuggler, a major player in the international drug scene who flew tons of marijuana into the US. He owned five islands in the Bahamas as well as a huge farm, complete with runway, in North Georgia.
In 1985, Chester died in a plane crash while flying a single-engine Piper Cub. He was 47. Henderson, five years old at the time, was his only passenger. She suffered a fractured skull and a broken vertebra, and doctors weren’t sure whether she’d live.
While she was growing up, the incident was always referred to as ‘the accident.’
But as an adult, Henderson discovered that perhaps it hadn’t been an accident after all. Her father was a skilled pilot who could fly a plane and land it even in the most difficult circumstances, and the crash had never made sense.
It had happened on a late afternoon, with clear visibility. He was flying over his own property. People claimed he’d run out of fuel, but he always checked his fuel levels before flying. Plus, there was an overwhelming smell of gas at the site of the accident.
Using her journalistic skills, Henderson looked into the circumstances and discovered her father had died just prior to an important federal court appearance. Was he a secret informant? Had he been murdered to be kept quiet? She writes about her journey to discover the answers in No Ordinary Bird: Drug Smuggling, a Plane Crash, and a Daughter’s Quest for the Truth (HarperCollins)
“I write books to figure out my emotions.”
No Ordinary Bird is part biography, part memoir, part investigative journalism, and reads like a compelling thriller.
The book, released in September, has received critical acclaim. People magazine named it their Book of the Week and declared it “a deeply felt portrait…as riveting as it is moving.” Publishers Weekly gave it a starred review, calling it a “unique, exciting and affecting memoir.” Oprah Daily named it a Best New Book of 2025 and Library Journal said this “exquisitely written, fiercely researched emotional memoir is not to be missed.”
“This book is Artis’s heart,” says friend and fellow memoirist Annabelle Tometich, who recently enjoyed success with her own book, The Mango Tree. The two have known each other since sixth grade and both live in Fort Myers. “It’s the utmost depths of her put into words,” says Tometich about No Ordinary Bird. “I could not put this book down, and I could not be more proud of my friend for writing it.
“To see her enjoy so much success is awesome. This is what she’s aways dreamed of, and here she is, living that dream.”
Tbeginnings
he book began as a novel about a father and daughter.
“I write books to figure out my emotions,” Henderson says.
She initially approached it as fiction because she felt the subject matter was too difficult to come at head on, she explains. “But it didn’t have any heat to it. And then I did a lot of reporting about other people who were experiencing the same situation as me, but that also didn’t have the emotional heat.” Then she began writing it as “a straight biography of my father.”
But when she showed excerpts to her long-time writing group, they told her, “It’s fine, but there needs to be more of you in it.”
And she thought: “More of me? That’s when I was like, ‘Oh my God, am I writing another memoir?’ The last thing I wanted to do was write another memoir.”
(In 2014, Henderson published Unremarried Widow, about losing her husband, Miles, in an Army helicopter crash just months after they’d married.)
“You can tell when a book is churned out,” Henderson says. “For it to have all the feels, it has to come from a compulsive place where you cannot stop yourself from writing. For me, that’s what this book was, once I accepted that this is the book I’m writing. I felt let’s do this thing. I went under for a long time. It consumed me.”
She spent ten years working on the book, eight of them researching and investigating. “I didn’t even think I was writing a book,” she confesses. “I was resistant to it for so long. But I couldn’t escape it: I cannot not write this book.”
No Ordinary Bird is part biography, part memoir, part investigative journalism, and reads like a compelling thriller. But according to Henderson, the book’s tone was very different in early drafts.
“The idea that my father was murdered, came out in successive drafts,” she says. “The discovery, the anger, came through.”
She didn’t enter into the project actively missing her father.
“Once I discovered him, now I can grieve him,” she says.
following the bees
Henderson was tenacious in following the story.
“There was no question of giving up,” she says. “I just keep going. That’s how I am with my life: you keep going ‘til you get to the end…I went to journalism school. I had the background to do this.”
She recalls a metaphor memoirist/essayist Annie Dillard used about writing. “She said, how do you find a hive of honey? You go into a field, and when you see a honey bee, you follow as far as you can until
you’ve lost it. Then you stand there and wait until there’s another bee, and you follow that.” You keep following successive bees, until you finally reach the hive.
In like manner, Henderson says, “I follow one thread until it fizzles out. Then I will sit, wait, do reporting, read a book about this topic, see where it takes me next.” She keeps following each thread as it leads her to new ones.
Some events happened serendipitously.
For example, Henderson’s father had been interviewed by TV journalist Forest Sawyer, when he was a young news reporter in Atlanta.
“I was desperate to see this,” Henderson says. “It was the ‘80s and we didn’t have any audio recordings.”
She tried reaching out to Sawyer through his speaking agency, through other reporters who knew him, through the Atlanta news station where he’d worked, to see if it was in their archives.
“This went on for years,” she says. “I had assumed I would never get my hands on this. Then, my mom was cleaning out her attic in Fort Myers Beach, and she said, “I just found this [VHS tape].”
Her mother didn’t know what was on it, but told her, “Maybe there’s something on here you might be interested in.”
Henderson had the tape transferred to digital, and was surprised to discover what she’d been searching for, for so long: her father’s interview with Forest Sawyer. It’d been in her mother’s attic all this time.
“I had tried so hard for so long [to find this],” Henderson says. “You just don’t know [how the pieces will come together].”
Hmore beginnings
er father’s daughter, Henderson is a world traveler.
She wrote a draft of her memoir in Portugal, and as a 2024 FulbrightNational Geographic Award recipient, spent eight months in western Australia in Shark Bay, studying marine stromatolites. (Stromatolites are the world’s oldest living microorganisms.)
“I’m fascinated by the world,” Henderson says. “There’s so much to see, interesting places and people. I like the challenge of it. The world is fascinating and terrifying, both. I like being an antenna vibrating with the intensity of the world. I’m introverted, I’m shy, but I just want to be in it and see what it’s like.”
Henderson’s book led her to learn more about her father, even after it was published. “It’s been people reaching out to me who knew my dad, who had a similar experience,” she says. “The people in the book have been amazingly kind. People have been lovely and thoughtful. I’m finding out more pieces about my dad.”
It’s also given her a family, including siblings from her father’s first marriage. They share rituals, inside jokes and cat videos, and celebrate Thanksgivings together.
As Henderson explains in her book, after her father’s death, “People… were cut out of my life with a surgical precision. In an attempt to hide my dad’s business from me, my mom exiled anyone who had anything to do with drug smuggling, and because my dad had recruited from their friends and family, that meant just about everyone we knew. She was protecting us, but she was also isolating us. Our life, which had once been so big, drew down to a very small circle.”
It took Henderson ten years to research and write No Ordinary Bird. The experience and its discoveries have changed her.
“In some ways, I think I was at the end of my youth,” she says. “My eyes have been opened to the strangeness of the world. Now I have this extended family. And now I know the truth of what has happened to my father.” •

ountry vocalist/songwriter Brennen Leigh was just a few weeks out of the womb when legendary country performer Ernest Tubb passed away September 6, 1984 in a Nashville hospital. Yet for the North Dakota-born Leigh, Tubb has made a lasting impression and remains a huge influence on her music, including the artist’s latest stellar studio album, Don’t You Ever Give Up On Love. It is an incredibly sweet ode to the Western swing/hillbilly jazz genre that Tubb would certainly tip his hat to.
“I think people have identified with it pretty strongly,” Leigh says. “We sort of felt like we chose the great Ernest Tubb as a kind of spirit guide for the album, so we were using his art as a true north for it. I felt like we stayed within those lines and used that to our advantage as much as possible.”
The result is a timeless, old-school country approach that sounds as if Leigh is at the Ryman Auditorium alongside Kitty Wells, Bob Wills, Hank Williams Sr. and other icons whose authenticity was as alluring as their well-crafted lyrical gems. From the toe-tapping, saloon piano tickling on the title track to the bouncy ‘Dumpster Diving,’ Leigh has crafted a short but stellar ten-track affair.
Leigh says the album looked to be in the can with ten songs selected as those that would make the final cut. But near the recording’s homestretch, a seed of creativity was planted between herself and another longtime songwriter.
“We had nine or ten songs that we had written down, as these are the ones we are recording,” she says. “Then, in the last few weeks of recording, I added four more. It was just serendipity. I had struck up a friendship with a writer named Alex Miller, and
we wrote three of the songs: ‘Alone In The Lone Star,’ ‘Texas Tumbleweed,’ and ‘Thank God You’re Gone.’ I can’t imagine the album without those songs. And then ‘Don’t You Ever Give Up On Love.’ I wouldn’t have written it if it weren’t for my co-writer, Elijah Ocean. In a way it came together kind of magically.”
Leigh says the title track she co-wrote with Ocean was a case of a few back-and-forths between the songwriters who hammered out the gem rather quickly.
“So Elijah Ocean and I are friends from Nashville,” she says. “He had written just a verse and thought of me, kind of wrote it with me in mind. He shared that verse with me, and it really resonated with me. So I wrote the second verse, and we called it a song. It was that simple. We recorded it over the phone.”
Another nugget is ‘Thank God You’re Gone.’ It’s a song Leigh says is her current personal favorite thanks to producer Kevin Skrla’s exceptional pedal steel wizardry, as well as performing lead guitar alongside Dave Biller. She says the track is a lot of fun to play live as they do it in a style resembling the likes of the late Leon Rhodes and Buddy Charlton with a guitar and pedal steel duet vibe. Both Rhodes and Charlton were integral musicians in Tubb’s Texas Troubadours group.
“I can’t remember exactly what inspired it, but I know I was sitting with Alex (Miller) in his kitchen and we had already written ‘Texas Tumbleweed,’” Leigh recalls. “We might have been just chatting, and somebody mentioned a joke that said, ‘Thank God you’re gone.’ We started riffing on it, and we wrote it in about 20 minutes. That one is heavily a nod to Ernest Tubb.”
“By the time I realized I could do something beside music, I was already pretty deep in it.”
She also says both she and Skrla spent a good amount of time discussing Tubb as they are both enormous fans. Leigh, who cites The Carter Family, Louvin Brothers, Hank Sr. and Sons of the Pioneers as some key musical influences, among others, says her attraction to Tubb’s music is easy to explain.
“To me, it just sounds like Texas,” she says. “Like if Texas had a voice, it would be Ernest Tubb. It’s so pure, so honest, and so much fun. Even the sad songs are fun. So I just like the spirit of his career and the legacy he’s left behind. His delivery, the way he delivered songs, and the way he used his band, kind of honoring them in every recording that they did.”
Don’t You Ever Give Up On Love is the latest in a handful of studio recordings and releases for Leigh. But it’s nothing new for the artist, who got her start at a very impressionable age and has written songs that have been covered by Rodney Crowell, Lee Ann Womack, and Charley Crockett, among others. In fact, she says she never saw any other career for herself since she started out so young.
“Well, depending on how you look at it, by the time I realized I could do something beside music, I was already pretty deep in it,” she says. “I was a kid when I started playing professionally. I never pursued anything else.”
As for her songwriting, she says she’s never been a fan of believing her
first draft of a song is the best version. The singer says if it feels complete, she steps away from it and gets the feedback of one or two fellow songwriters she trusts.
“One thing I’ve learned is falling in love with your own work too early is a mistake because you want it to be the best it can be,” she says. “So I take a while to finish them. The really truly easy ones can come in less than an hour. But it’s never too late to edit something.”
Leigh is also different than some other writers in the sense she doesn’t rock the boat in terms of seeking inspiration. She feels when the time is right, it will come to her, whether that’s weeks or months between a song’s seeds being sown.
“The longer you do it, and the longer you live as a songwriter, you kind of figure out what works for you,” she says. “In terms of inspiration, I’ve ceased to worry that I’m never going to write again for a while. I know in creativity we have seasons, and so sometimes you just don’t write one for a while and then you write six in a weekend. That’s just how it’s always been for me.”
Like nearly any other musician, Leigh found the pandemic difficult in some ways but in others a great way to reset and “feel like a regular person.” She also was part of a group called the Sequestered Songwriters who did weekly online concerts, becoming part of a community of musicians and writers who found themselves in the same unfortunate boat in terms of touring and livelihood. But she’s glad to have come out the other end. She says the album release shows for Don’t You Ever Give Up On Love were great as her band performed the effort front to back with some older signatures thrown in.
As for her biggest highlight in her rich career, Leigh says it’s the part of the job that musicians often have a hard time coping with. While some might loathe the idea of waking up in a new locale every day, Leigh’s adventurous, curious nature seems to make the hectic schedule and the road far more easier to swallow. And enjoy.
“Seeing different countries and meeting music fans from all over the world has been priceless,” she says. “I love the travel and just to hear somebody else’s perspective. To walk around in a new city or a new place, that’s been really meaningful for me.”
As for the Fort Myers area show, which is the opening night of the IMG Women of Americana tour, Leigh says the details are still being ironed out. But it will be a “revue of the best of Americana music since it started.” Songs by the likes of Lucinda Williams, John Prine, and Bob Dylan, among others, are tentatively scheduled to be included.
She says. “It’s going to be songs people recognize from artists they know. I’m not yet certain if it’s going to have original songs, I’ll push for that, but we don’t have a final setlist yet. But it will be fun, very fun. The band is all people that we personally chose. It’s going to be a good time.”
