Inspiring the Generation of New Ideas and Translational Excellence at FSU

Translating Research into Real-World Solutions for Societal Challenges

IGNITE-FSU provides the spark needed to ignite a thriving innovation ecosystem that benefits the entire North Florida regional economy. IGNITE-FSU builds translational research capacity at FSU through four overarching objectives:

TRANSLATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Restructure to support translational research; streamline agreements and review processes for industry partnerships, licensing, and startup creation.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Increase translational research programming through student microcredentials, post-doc fellowships, faculty entrepreneurial mentorship, and SBIR/STTR training.

Forge partnerships with the local innovation ecosystem and provide seed funding programs to move ideas from lab to market, PATHWAYS TO IMPACT

CULTURE OF INNOVATION

Create a sustainable culture of innovation by creating a network of change agents, launch institutional initiatives celebrating innovators, and aligning institutional policies to award innovation.

What is IGNITE-FSU?

Launched in February 2024 as part of the National Science Foundation’s Accelerating Research Translation program, IGNITE-FSU serves as a connector and catalyst for the translation of products and services out of the research community in Tallahassee and ensure maximal impact on the Florida economy and beyond.

Florida State University’s award includes $6 million over four years to identify and build research that shows commercialization potential, mature our technology transfer expertise, and to support the training of entrepreneurial faculty and students.

IGNITE-FSU ImpactHighlights

As of the end of Year 1, the IGNITE-FSU grant efforts contributed to:

$6.5M investment in new Tallahassee technology incubator

$1M+ in lab equipment and amenities. New hires to boost translational research

New training and professional development programming offered

$1M of seed funding to advance translational research projects

$180K+ awarded to FSU startups through pitch competition.

Inventors joined ART Innovation Ambassador Network.

Partnerships with AERO, Jim Moran College, TiE Tampa Bay, and others.
