The Bryan Goff Solo Competition, now in its seventeenth year, was conceived with the idea of providing a monetary incentive for the undergraduate students in the FSU trumpet studio to compete in the scholarship competition of the International Trumpet Guild and the solo division of the National Trumpet Competition. The repertoire chosen for the Goff competition consists of the solo which they will prepare for the NTC and the etude which is required for the ITG competition.
The results have been overwhelmingly positive. The participation has been as high as 90 percent of the studio who have diligently prepared the difficult repertoire for this competition. Many of these students have then been ITG scholarship winners and have been selected for the semi-finals of the NTC. In 2011, half of the ITG scholarship winners were from the FSU trumpet studio. That awards ceremony was truly an FSU show! (Afterwards, someone jokingly suggested performance enhancing testing for FSU students).
For these first four competitions, Professor Goff has provided all of the prize money. Beginning with the 2014 competition, interest from the Bryan Goff Endowed Scholarship Fund will be used to partially fund the prizes. This fund has now been fully endowed at more than $25,000, primarily by the generous donations from Bryan and Nancy Goff and many of Professor Goff’s former students.
