No until the turn of the 20th century did women gain the right to a free higher education for the first time in the history of Western civilisations. Yet, it only took them one century to move from a marginal position to the centre of the education system and even dominate it. This was contributed by a combination of various social, economic and institutional factors. The educational expansion of women has not, however, occurred in all fields of education – still, they tend to omit pathways of which mathematics is an essential component.
This publication describes the processes that account for the shift in educational attainment between women and men and the stability in their educational choices.
