Hello, friends! I trust that this edition of the class newsletter finds you having enjoyed the summer months and looking forward to cooler weather and fall festivities.
As always, it’s my pleasure to share updates from our fellow alumni. Dr. Warren C. Samms, G’03, was promoted to drug chemistry manager at the Harris County Institute for Forensic Science in Houston; Andrea Ewert, G’09, a second grade teacher in Maize, Kan., was awarded the First Year Teacher Horizon Award at the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network Conference; and Crystal Lathrop, G’04, opened Xpress Tan, a spray tanning salon, in Wichita. Emily (Corman) Judson, G’07, and her husband Brandon had a daughter, Cora Eleanor, in May 2010; Jill (Glanville) Penna, G’05, and her husband Jacob welcomed daughter Gracie Ann in September 2010.

I would also like to share with you an uncustomary personal perspective. I am a researcher by trade; I investigate the capacity for online communities to engage the politically disenfranchised.
However, as of late, I have realized that I have become a member of the frustrated and disenfranchised. When I began my career, my husband graciously left his; never thinking it would take more than three years to find another job. In the ensuing time, he has found more happiness and joy volunteering for animal rescue than any career could possibly bring him. In short, we can spend time lamenting about the things that are not going our way, but in doing so, we may miss the things that are. If we look for it, we can find solace in the most unexpected places. We may have to clip coupons and rent movies instead of going out, but we have our freedom and faith to guide us through the even the toughest of times. Inside, you will find information on upcoming campus events and other campus news. Hopefully, the new design helps keep you more connected to the Friends University community!
