Chairman’s Foreword The theatre has now recovered from the fun and chaos of the pantomime, we are enjoying a quieter time when maintenance works are carried out, and this year, new central heating boilers have been installed. Our maintenance team have worked very hard to revamp our dressing rooms, (which are very posh now!) fit for all the performers we have booked this year. FOST has been spending some money to enable our technical person Chris to buy some more lighting and microphones to provide an even better auditorium experience for us all. Much of his equipment is now getting unfit for purpose, so no doubt we will be replacing more items this year. In the past few months, we have recruited more volunteers to join our teams, and I am pleased to say our numbers are back to before the pandemic. The membership of FOST has also returned to previous levels, so thank you all for supporting the theatre and helping to keep live entertainment thriving on the Island. The FOST committee are now planning ahead for future events, organising a Garden Party in June to coincide with the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, a Curry Evening postponed from March to later in the year, and of course having a stand at the summer events on the Island including the Chale Show, so look out for us! There is a packed programme for the theatre, including plays, comedians, and music and of course our fabulous summer season of Beyond The West End, so keep looking at the theatre website for all the up to date information. A Message from the Editor
Thank you for reading our March 2022 edition of the ‘Stage - Write’ magazine. I hope you find the content interesting, useful and informative. Well, here we are once again, fast approaching the Season I consider to be the most enjoyable, and marking the start of the tourism season on the Island. Also, the days are becoming longer and the temperatures are improving. Did you know that “Easter” was named from the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre? At least, this is what author Bede stated in the book he wrote back in the eighth century. This goddess in particular was known for spring time celebrations and fertility. Some believe that Eostre (also sometimes spelled “Eastre”) also had a connection with two other big Easter items — hares and eggs. In fact, the giving of eggs is a tradition that dates even further back than Easter itself. In this edition, we have another music related Crossword from Matt Day, a spring themed Word Search from my good wife Sally. Look out for the report on the Volunteers’ Induction Sessions and Thank You Evening that took place in January and February respectively. The Theatre hosted a special tribute in February to the late John Hannam organised by John’s son. You can read about this on page 21. John was a great friend and supporter of Shanklin Theatre and will be dearly missed! The year finished very well for Carol Pointer who won the Delysia Hamper Raffle. The raffle raised a grand total of £285. Our sincere thanks go to Diane and John Day who provided the hamper full of products from their farm shop.

FOCUS ON OUR VOLUNTEERS The Theatre has now re-opened its doors for the 2022 season. However, during the ‘dark’ month of January, FOST has been busy planning events for our volunteers. VOLUNTEERS’ INDUCTION SESSIONS 20 volunteers attended the induction sessions on 25th January and 8th February. These informal sessions were organised by Suzie Thurgood, FOST Secretary and introduced by FOST Chairman Janet Wardle. Roger Coleman the Theatre Bookings and Operations Manager gave a short talk on his varied roles. The attendees then watched an in-house film produced by Rob Robertson and narrated by Roger relating to the history of the Theatre. Janet then presented a folder to each attendee containing a welcome letter from David Kast, Shanklin Theatre MD, and a list of essential contacts, regulations about the car park, organisation charts and a few goodies. Then it was time to stretch the legs with Jacqui Robertson, FOST membership Secretary, taking the volunteers on a whistle-stop tour of the Theatre.

Here is a quote from Billie, one of the volunteers who attended:
‘What an informative and interesting morning we had at the induction session. A lovely welcome from Janet who then introduced Roger. Roger was able to condense telling us about his two jobs in 10 minutes! ‘It was so interesting to hear how he selects the shows to put on, the costings, the marketing, discussions with promoters etc. And how he is also responsible for the building itself: insurance, electricity bills and other costs and keeping up with general legislations. ‘A short video followed detailing the history of the theatre, the people that gave endless hours of their time and saved the theatre from being destroyed, the many performers that have been here and the importance of volunteers today that all work together as one large family to keep the theatre functioning and give thousands of customers a night out to remember. ‘Finally, Jacqui gave us a tour of the whole building: backstage, dressing rooms, the bar, even outside detailing original windows and foundation stones but best of all to go onto the stage itself. Well, I finally got to tread the boards!’ VOLUNTEERS’ THANK YOU EVENING FOST also organised a well-deserved Thank You evening for all the Theatre volunteers on Monday 7th February. As the event was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, the 2022 event was made extra special. We were delighted by the excellent entertainment performed for us by Jake Curran, Tilley Grimshaw and JC Grimshaw (image left), the energetic Dance Vibez group and Ollie Ducie the vocalist and bass guitarist from the folk rock band, Lucid. 6|Page
Jake and Tilley, who raised over £400 with their virtual concert ‘Drumming and Strumming’ for Shanklin Theatre last year, are planning another one this year. Jake later posted on the FOST Facebook Page saying: ‘Thanks for a great night once again, Shanklin Theatre! Thanks to everyone who watched our performance and everyone who came to say hi afterwards. We had an amazing time performing alongside JC Grimshaw.’ Dance Vibez (Image below – the team from Dance Vibez led by Ann Abe before going on-stage)
Dance Vibez provide classes for toddlers and upwards (adults and professional dancers), ballet, tap, free style, hip hop, performing arts, Melody Bear classes, Parent and toddler classes, exams, show work (including west end shows and charity work). Theatre Volunteer, Veronica Bingham commented on the FOST Facebook Page – ‘Congratulations to you all. Such speedy costume changes too. Thank you for your enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment in performance.’ Ollie Ducie (right) from Lucid band was our final act of the evening performing a number of well known songs from the Eagles and Eric Clapton among others. Lucid are regular entertainers at Shanklin Theatre and always fill the place to the rafters. Keep an eye on the Theatre’s website; new shows and acts are updated regularly. 7|Page
To finish off the evening, David Kast and Janet Wardle gave well-deserved thanks to volunteers who returned or joined after the Theatre re-opened in July 2021. Janet presented the volunteer long service awards for 5 and 10 years. Volunteer, Cilla Morris, who is 96 years young this year, received a card and a bouquet of flowers. The evening was extremely well received by over 80 volunteers who attended. Here is a quote from Sammantha, one of the attendees: ‘Loved both the clever and enjoyable line-up showcasing the importance of the connection between the theatre and our talented community. From Jake and Tilley, just starting out to the accomplished Ollie of Lucid. Sandwiched between them we were enthralled by the tour de force of energy Dance Vibez. I was impressed by so many volunteers collecting their 5 and 10 year service awards demonstrating commitment and enjoyment. Wonderful to see lovely Cilla, our oldest volunteer honoured too’. Our Welfare Officer Cilla Morris celebrated her 96th birthday on 28th January; Cilla is our most senior lady volunteer. Born in 1926, Cilla grew up in East Cowes where she spent a happy childhood as the youngest of three girls. Her father was a Yorkshire man who worked at Whites shipyard in the town as a riveter. On leaving school she worked in the office of Saunders Roe aircraft factory. During the war she was evacuated to Hampshire along with some of her peers, to be kept safe from the bombing.

Whilst there she met her future husband Bill. They married in 1947 and moved to London where Bill worked for the London Electricity Board, their son Michael was born in 1948 and they settled in Merton Park. Cilla worked as a secretary in a boys’ school in Wandsworth for 22 years. Sadly, Bill died in 1998, and in 2003 she decided to come home to the Island. At present she is busier than ever with local organisations, and, of course, her involvement with the theatre; in fact she was one of the first volunteers to sign up to FOST back in 2010. Thank you Cilla! A big, big thank you goes to the acts and the organisers, Janet Wardle FOST Chairman, Suzie Thurgood, FOST Secretary, Dot Coleman and Cherrie Scudder and their catering team, Eddy Parsons and Jean Osmond for manning the bar, Chris and Rebecca Gardner for looking after the technical part of the evening, the ushers (Peter Frankling, Cilla Morris, Viv Howell and Alana Bird), everyone who helped with the setting up and cleaning at the end and Debs Vannozzi for designing the volunteers’ poster. Sewing and Embroidery Group *********************************** For a few years now a number of us have been holding a sewing and embroidery group at the theatre. We would like to open this up to anyone who enjoys craft and would like to join a friendly and fun group. This could include scrapbooking, card making, knitting or crochet to name but a few! We meet upstairs at the theatre on the first Wednesday of every month from 2.00pm till 4.00pm. We ask for a small charge to cover the hire of our room which goes towards supporting our wonderful theatre! Our first meeting for this mixed group will be Wednesday 6th April. VECTIS 40s VINTAGE GROUP SUPPORTS THE FRIENDS OF SHANKLIN THEATRE On a very wet and windy August weekend back in 2021, the Friends of Shanklin Theatre held a stall at Calbourne Water Mill as one of the charities supported by the Vectis 40s Vintage group. Following a £200 cheque presentation to The Wildheart Trust, The Friends were delighted to receive a generous donation from Vectis 40s for £200 to help support the Theatre as reported in the Island Echo back in January. Members of Vectis 40s Vintage also presented two further £200 cheques to other Island charities. These included; Friends of the Animals and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

say that performances at Shanklin Theatre were up and running again after the pandemic, but the Theatre is an old listed building with ongoing upkeep and maintenance costs to meet. Back in September 2021 members of the Vectis 40s Vintage group attended the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary for a weekend of fundraising. These events are nothing new to this group of like-minded people who enjoy the 1940s era, including its music, fashion and food, as they have raised hundreds of pounds for local charities over the years.

Formed by Alan and Sylvia Williams the group now has about 40 members who meet regularly whilst enjoying dressing in 40s fashion items. Some members study the history of the 1940s and group members are always willing to join in with other Island groups who enjoy this decade. Members also attend events with a 40s theme or offer speakers to organisations who would like to know more of this decade. The Prize Draw team is an important part of the Theatre, raising funds for its maintenance and upkeep. The team are a dedicated group of volunteers who work well together selling Draw tickets before shows. Since the Theatre reopened in July 2020, to date we have raised in excess of £10,000. This is a great achievement and something I’m proud of as leader of a great Prize Draw team. Kind regards, Linda Stoneham. Sunday Night at Shanklin Theatre - A Tribute to John Hannam On the 6th February, Shanklin Theatre proudly hosted a tribute concert – a night of live music in memory of legendary local journalist and broadcaster, John Hannam, who sadly passed away in autumn 2021. Organised by John's son, Sean, the evening was a nod to the showbiz TV series, ‘Sunday Night at the London Palladium’. "In true entertainment tradition, the show must go on," said Sean. "I'm staging a charity concert in honour of my dad in the Isle of Wight, where he was born and bred and spent his life. "Dad loved the Island. He made a name for himself there, and was never lured away by the bright lights of Fleet Street, or national radio, even though his great reputation was known all over the UK and across the world. "During his amazing life — almost 50 years of it spent interviewing stars of stage and screen, as well as local people — he decided to stay on the Island, with his family and friends. "Shanklin Theatre was a venue that my dad was very fond of. "It’s where we held the wake for his funeral in November, so it’s very fitting that the tribute concert will take place there." Two mainland acts performed on the night, British husband-and-wife country duo, My Darling Clementine and singersongwriter, Matt James – the former drummer of ’90s anthemic indie20 | P a g e
rockers Gene, made their Island debuts at the show. Also performing was: Matt Hill, Andy Strickland (The Loft, The Caretaker Race, and The Chesterfields), Brian Sharpe (The Cherokees) and Keith Roberts (Blue Moon), Bobby I Can Fly, Chris Clarke, Amy Bird, Bob and Bertie Everson.

After the show, a plaque funded by Isle of Wight Radio in collaboration with Shanklin Theatre in the memory of John was unveiled by John's son Sean and daughter Caroline. Sean also went onto say: “Dad was a great supporter of local entertainment, and the theatre played a huge part in his life, so it was really important to hold the event in Shanklin. I’d like to thank Isle of Wight Radio and the theatre for donating the plaque. Now, whenever there’s a show at the venue, dad will always

Bucket Collection Report November 2021 - £919.25 - 11 shows December 2021 - £1723.38 - 18 shows January 2022 - £534.36 - 6 shows The winter season brought us First Act’s Cinderella; Theatre Train’s Peter Pan; and Spotlight’s Pantomime Production of Beauty and the Beast, written by Dominic Pope. Featuring Brad Barnley as the Beast, Rowan Lathey as Belle, and with all of the usual fabulous cast. Music Tribute Acts: Tina Live, Think Floyd, Talon and Big Girls Don’t Cry had the theatre rocking. With their two different styles of humour, Kevin Bloody Wilson and Ed Byrne had the packed audiences laughing. Barry performed on our stage back in 2011. The late John Hannam had interviewed Barry on a couple of occasions but this was the first time he had seen him in concert. John went onto say: “When I interviewed Barry in London, he rang up in the evening to ask if he had been too much of a grumpy old man at lunchtime. I assured him he hadn’t been.” RIP Barry.
