Chairman’s Foreword Welcome to our spring edition of Stage-Write. After a very hectic and successful pantomime season, the theatre has been very quiet. Until you hear the sounds of hammers, drills and all the other tools needed to repair and maintain this lovely theatre. Our maintenance team have worked tirelessly refurbishing the bar area, including changing the floor levels and constructing a new modern working area. Considering the time restraint, the team did a wonderful job not only in the bar, but the stairway was repainted as well. On the 1st February the bar was officially opened by Michael Portillo, and you may have seen the reports and pictures in the local papers. Meeting Michael and watching his show afterwards, was certainly one of my personal highlights of being FOST Chairman. On the 5th February, we held our Thank You evening for all theatre volunteers, starting with an illusionist show with Aaron Isted. This was very entertaining and left us all wondering “how did he do that!” We had our buffet in the map room and new bar, and I had the privilege of presenting some more of our volunteers with their five year badges. The evening was another outstanding success! The coming year will be very busy for FOST, with events, training, learning new procedures and helping the theatre to put on the huge number of shows that have been booked. A Message from the Editor My memories of visiting the Isle of Wight as a child, teenager and an adult are plentiful and wonderful, that is why I decided to choose Shanklin as my permanent residence. The history of The Shanklin Theatre, through its transition as a former Institute, to a Town Hall and as an English Heritage Grade II Listed Building Theatre has always intrigued me. In 2003, I attended a show at the theatre featuring Jimmy Jemain as Cliff Richard, the Rapiers as the Shadows and the guest appearance of the Shadows original bass guitarist, the late Terence ‘Jet’ Harris. From that moment on, I was hooked on Shanklin Theatre! Six years later, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to be involved with the future preservation of the theatre as an active volunteer. The theatre has since grown successfully and exponentially and is fully recognised as a major venue on the UK touring circuit. You may have seen or already heard about the newly published booklet on the history of Shanklin Theatre. It had became continually apparent from our customers, that there was an appetite for the written history of the theatre. With that in mind, I set about gathering historic images, stories and history of the former Shanklin Institute and I wrote a brief timeline of the building from its construction in 1879 to date in a booklet form. With the help and assistance from various contributors, we have published a 40 page history booklet. Copies of the booklet are available to purchase from the theatre box office priced at £2.75 each with all proceeds going back to the theatre. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading the historic booklet which may enrich the ‘Shanklin Theatre Experience’ for island residents and visitors alike. May I wish you all a very happy Easter, Michael. Shanklin Theatre refurbished Bar opened by Mr Michael Portillo on the 1st February 2020
Michael Portillo, the former Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2000-2001 and Conservative politician is now a journalist and broadcaster. Mr Portillo retired from the House of Commons and from active politics at the 2005 general election, and has since pursued his media interests, presenting and participating in a wide range of television and radio programmes. His passion for steam trains led him to make the BBC documentary series Great British Railway Journeys, beginning in 2010, in which he travels the British railway networks, referring to an 1840s copy of Bradshaw's Guide. The show's success led him to present a number of further series about railway systems in other countries. Mr Portillo was invited to cut the ribbon to celebrate the opening of the theatres refurbished bar before going on stage to present his show to a sold out theatre audience – Life: ‘A Game of Two Halves’.

Welcomed by the FOST Chairman, Mrs Janet Wardle; Mr Portillo was introduced to the volunteer maintenance team led by Neil Reader who carried out the refurbishment. The theatre’s volunteer Bar team were present who also contributed to the bar upgrade. A complimentary bottle of his favourite red wine was presented to Mr Portillo after meeting the theatre’s managing director, David Kast, director, Vic Farrow, and Shanklin Theatre and Community Trust chairman, Chris Quirk.

The Isle of Wight Volunteer Centre has hosted yet another hugely successful Volunteer Fair. The most recent Volunteer Fair welcomed members of the public, looking to find something that can help them make a difference to their community. Nearly 300 members of the public came along to the Riverside Centre on the 11th January for the 2020 Volunteer Fair. Hosted by the Isle of Wight Volunteer Centre, it was open to everyone that had an interest in becoming a volunteer. It is estimated that there are more than 1,500 voluntary and community organisations on the Island which make an invaluable contribution to the social fabric of our community. The annual event brought together 46 representatives from various Island organisations and volunteering groups. Diverse range of opportunities Amanda Coyle, the co-ordinator of the Isle of Wight Volunteer Centre, said: 9|Page
“This was a fantastic opportunity for people to find out about the diverse range of opportunities available. “They were able to meet organisations and current volunteers face to face to find out what was involved in the volunteer roles. “Some people had come along to find specific organisations but some people were not sure who they would like to volunteer with. “This event gave them the opportunity to gather information from a lot of organisations.”

Five Year Service – Volunteer’s Thank You Evening
On the 5th February, a thank you evening took place in the auditorium to celebrate five years loyal service to the theatre by a number of volunteers. Before the five year long service badges were awarded, we had the pleasure of watching Illusionist Mr Aaron Isted perform on stage. Volunteers then retired to the Map Room and bar area for some well deserved sandwiches and cakes prepared by our catering team. Chitty Chitty Cheque for an Island Charity One of the theatre’s leading Amateur Non-Profit making companies, the Island Savoyards, recently handed over a cheque for £1,761 to Age UK Isle of Wight. The money was raised from the sale of the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang show programmes back in October last year. Age UK Isle of Wight is a local, independent charity that exists to work with, and for, all people aged 50 years and over on the Isle of Wight. Their services help people to improve their quality of life, whatever their circumstances.

The Friends of Shanklin Theatre are proud to announce that they have organised their ‘Shanklin Coast to Country’ walks in conjunction with Visit Isle of Wight as part of 2020 Isle of Wight Walking Festival taking place from the 2nd to 17th May. The planned dates for the local guided walks are Monday 4th May & Sunday 17th May 2020. More details to follow on routes and timings nearer the time. 2020 already looks like being an excellent festival. The Island’s recent Unesco Biosphere Reserve award means that the Isle of Wight Walking Festival will have an added boost as a natural way to enjoy the Island. Add to this, All Along the Riverbank on the 2nd of May, May Day bank holiday 8th May (VE Day anniversary) and the 30th anniversary of Walk the Wight on the 10th May.

Bucket Collection Report 2019/20 November - £1201.11 - 15 shows December - £1849.72 - 20 shows January - £296.44 - 2 shows Total - £3347.22 - 37 shows Collecting Pots Bar – Sweetshop & Box Office: £123.68 November featured music from Christopher Cross, Andy Fairweather Low, Joe Brown and tribute acts Simply Red, Michael, Take That Experience, Talon and Big Girls Don’t Cry, which totaled over £774. Everyone loves to laugh, and that’s what our audiences did with Kevin Bloody Wilson, Dave Gorman, ventriloquist Nina Conti, and radio’s Tim Brooke Taylor and writer and standup comedian Ben Elton, which added up to £475. A fascinating evening on the British Isles in 100 Places, by TV’s presenter of Coast, Neil Oliver, raised over £106. Former SAS Sergeant Major, Mark "Billy” Billingham gave an exciting insight into the world of bodyguard to the stars on 13th November. Once again the Russian State Ballet and Opera House returned to the theatre to perform Swan Lake, which brought in £140. Shows from Footsteps Dance Studio and First Act’s Panto, Treasure Island, represented local groups and performers. Finally, to end the season in style, we were taken on a magic carpet ride by Spotlight’s pantomime, Aladdin. The 14 shows collected £1492 for the Theatre Support Fund. Alana Bird 20 | P a g e
Theatre Bar Refurbishment
Each Year, during the “dark time” at the theatre after the last Christmas
and New Year Pantomime, a major project is undertaken by the maintenance team. This year’s project being the remodelling and refurbishment of the theatre bar. The working room within the bar area is particularly restricted, and due to the theatre becoming more and more popular, ensuring the bar runs smoothly is a must. After discussions with the bar managers, we had a brief to: Create more space behind the bar - Raise the rest of the already part raised floor behind the bar for ease of operation for staff - Remove all the black wall paint to make the area lighter and brighter - Extend the bar surface so that tea and coffee facilities could be relocated away from the main bar area - Make the shelving deeper to create room for additional spirit optics so that staff did not have to cross one another - Repaint the bar room itself as it was looking “tired and discoloured” using the same cotton cream and dark grey colours as the foyer and main stairwells. To this end, our team, consisting of: Chris Turner, Peter Tuppen, Geoff Klein, Dave Jupe and I, set about formulating a plan to make this happen. Around October, I drew up a plan of the bar; we took measurements and then ordered most of the materials in readiness for the refurbishment. The shelving is a proprietary unit which we modified and then stained, painted and varnished to speed up the process come the time, the two new optic rails were also made and ready to go as well as the backing boards to affix everything back onto. On the 3rd January 2020 all the pictures came down, leaflets removed, curtains down, chiller units out from behind bar, the optics were removed, all sales goods stored behind the bar was removed, the bar shelving was dismantled, tables and chairs stored away and everything was bare. The work began, the old bar front was removed, floor 21 | P a g e
marked and we set out to bring the raised floor forwards and out to the side so that the whole floor is raised. Meanwhile the old bar top was removed, the front stripped and refaced with plywood and the decorative mouldings added. Our backup painting volunteers; Jacqui and Rob Robertson, Dave Pointer and Matt Day had already begun the task of painting the walls leading down the staircase to the bar and then onto the bar room itself. Early in the second week of refurbishment, the new flooring was laid after the area behind the bar had been painted with numerous coats to cover the existing black paint. Working hard also was Chris our Electrician to ensure power and lighting sources were in the right position for reconnection. At the beginning of the third week the refurbished back bar base was installed as was the new bar front, bar top and new racking underway on new backboards to secure to. All was shaping up surprisingly well!!! By the end of the third week the bar end and flap was made, the resized and remodelled door in position and the optic rails installed. The bar room itself was also taking shape with all walls painted, and the grey dado rails, skirting and radiator fronts well in hand. 22 | P a g e
Our team had the Friday off to allow our dedicated painting team a day free of noise, dust, and general banter which I am sure was very much appreciated…………. During the final week, the glue and mastic gun were working overtime, nails and screws were being fired in left, right and centre and anything that stood still too long was painted. Electric second fix was underway and the new light features added to make, as per brief, everything lighter and brighter. The new optics were fitted to the rails and bar staff Jean, Eddy and Dave started on moving back the chiller units, filling the optics and dusting everything else ready to go back in place. By Thursday evening all that had to be done was to clear away all tools, timber off cuts and painting equipment ready for the floor to be professionally cleaned on Friday. A great team effort from everyone that took part. I am sure we are all proud of what has been achieved and hope that customers and staff alike enjoy for many years. Neil Reader Maintenance Manager.
