Chairman’s Foreword
Welcome
to our spring edition of Stage Write. After a very hectic and successful pantomime season, the theatre has been very quiet. Until you hear the sounds of hammers, drills and all the other tools needed to repair and maintain this lovely theatre. Our maintenance team are hard at work backstage improving our dressing rooms and adding extra facilities, as well as doing all the other jobs requiring attention. Our housekeeping team has also been hard at work giving the theatre a thorough spring clean, making sure everything is sparkling for the new season. Recently, the FOST committee decided to present our long serving volunteers with a special badge as recognition of their hard work. All those people who have been continuously working at the theatre for five years or more were eligible to receive a badge. At the beginning of February, we held our Thank You evening for all theatre volunteers, and this was when we had a special awards section to present seventy volunteers with their badges. The evening was an outstanding success! Our summer show Beyond the West End has just gone on sale, and I would like to give special thanks to Spotlight IOW Ltd who put this show on, for giving a very generous FOST discount to us. There is no excuse for not coming to see this extravaganza of music, dance, comedy and fun, running from May to October. A Message from the Editor
Thank you for reading our March edition of ‘Stage Write’ magazine. I hope you find the content interesting, useful and informative. Further on in this edition, you can read details about our very successful and well attended inaugural FOST Volunteer Thank You Evening. We are already planning a five year and ten year Thank You Evening for 2020. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in making the Thank You Evening a very special and successful evening indeed! Also included in this edition, is a short story dedicated to the legendary comedian, Ken Dodd. Vic Farrow had kindly supplied various letters of correspondence exchanged over the years and Vic’s quest to get Ken over to perform on our humble stage. Look out also for Matt Day’s superb quarterly Stage Write Crossword, FOST discounted shows and read about the final cheque donation from our friends at the Landguard Road Co-op! CO-OP BIG THANK YOU DAY SATURDAY 24TH NOVEMBER Landguard Manor Road, Shanklin. Dear Theatre Supporter. The Friends of Shanklin Theatre were delighted to attend the Co-op ‘Big Thank You Day’ on Saturday the 24th November to receive their final payment from the 2017-2018 Co-op Causes Initiative of £5,902.46.
The total amount raised by the Shanklin Co-op shoppers using their membership cards had raised a staggering £17,140.57 for the three local designated causes - Daisy Chains IW Children’s Charity - Rylstone Chalet Restoration - and the Friends of Shanklin Theatre Window Restoration. We would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone that have shopped locally at Landguard Road Co-op and supported this very worthy cause! Our thanks also go to the brilliant team at our local Co-op for working with us over the last year lead by Co-op manageress Julie & area manager Simon Thompson. Simon went onto say: ‘It's been a fantastic year and would not have been possible without our customers or your support and drive. A fantastic 4|Page
cause which brings so much to Shanklin. Thank you for your kind words.’ In total, across the country, the Co-op has raised an enormous £19 million for 400 causes. We would encourage you to support the three latest local causes for 2019: Shanklin Scout Group: Young People. 'We want to modernise our scout hut, so the young people can take part in more overnight activities and enhance their scouting experience.' Bodster Equine Assisted Learning Community Education & Skills: 'We want to develop a sensory nature habitat to help young and older learners learn about nature and how to preserve it.' Ability Dogs 4 Young People IoW Young People: 'We wish to purchase and train more puppies to be Ability Dogs and Therapy Dogs. Their first two years cost approximately £10,000 per dog.'

One of the many community and social activities carried out on a regular basis by the Friends of Shanklin Theatre is attending the Annual Volunteers’ Fair at Ventnor Botanic Gardens. Now in its seventh year and working in partnership with the Isle of Wight Volunteer Centre and Community Action Isle of Wight, the annual fair provides an excellent opportunity for volunteering groups to meet and speak with members of the community who may express an interest in becoming a volunteer, either to support a local business or charitable and community organisation, invariably they can both benefit from each other’s expertise and networks. Various Island organisations will prepare a small stand or stall on the day to help promote their volunteering organisation or charity. Handing out information leaflets or simply speaking to prospective volunteers, help is always on hand to provide advice and guidance for those interested in volunteering but not sure where to start. Becoming a Theatre Volunteer can also provide a venue for people to meet new friends on a regular basis and help promote a sense of social and community inclusion and well being, something that is vital for stimulating a healthy life style whilst helping with the day-to-day running of the Theatre. A strong society and community is one where everyone works together. The Friends of Shanklin Theatre have also been delighted to support the ‘Leaflet Exchange Day' at the Isle of Wight Pearl in association with Visit Isle of Wight. It promotes that the Isle of Wight is open for business during the winter, and that was the message from us and other tourism businesses on the day of the leaflet exchange. The event in November was attended by around 35 businesses keen to promote the Island's winter tourism offer. Representatives from Island attractions, events and activity companies 12 | P a g e
including representatives from the Shanklin Hotel & Accommodation Association shared their leaflets with Island businesses and accommodation providers, for them to pass on to their guests. The Isle of Wight benefits from tourism in the summer months and, throughout the winter months, many businesses are affected by low trade as the Isle of Wight is deemed to be ‘closed’ for winter. We want to shout about all the businesses that are open all year round.’ Activities on the day included a ‘Segway’ Transporter experience and Archery provided by Adventure Activities Isle of Wight.

Poppy Pin Sales Raise £1,550.00 for the Royal British Legion Shanklin Branch
As part of the FOST commitment throughout our Poppy Pin sales initiative, it was agreed to donate £1,550.00 to a designated local organisation. We are delighted to announce that during November, a cheque for £1,550.00 was donated to the Royal British Legion Shanklin Branch. FOST Chairman Janet Wardle and Vice Chairman Michael Beston presented the cheque donation to the RBL Shanklin branch treasurer and secretary. Our thanks go to all our dedicated volunteers who were directly involved, and continue to be involved in the sales of our pins. We have a very limited number of pins remaining for purchase. FOST Volunteer Thank You Evening - 6th February 2019
During February this year over 100 FOST volunteers braved the wet weather to attend a ‘Volunteer Thank You’ evening at the Theatre. Unlike previous ‘Thank You’ evenings, this one was a little different: a condensed version of the 10th Anniversary Show, that took place during October, for those who missed the original show (including the Theatre Chairman, Vic Farrow, who was in hospital) and those who wished to see the video presentations from the show again. The original show was a sellout and, although there were plenty of seats available for the ‘Thank You’ evening, volunteers sat near the stage to be close to the action and experience a great atmosphere. Theatre Manager Roger Coleman once again showed his compère skills, though this time he was on stage rather than being a disembodied voice! The ‘performance’ kicked off with video presentations showing the Theatre’s history from the construction of the original Institute to the time of World War II, with still images of the various acts who originally 17 | P a g e
performed between the videos being shown in place of the original performances. Videos on the stage screen were noticeably brighter – thanks to a newly installed projector replacing the old projector that had served for over 20 years but was starting to become rather dim. Events progressed well until still images of the Pepperpots came on screen; at this point the presentation halted with a computer error! Sadly, IT were unable to fix the problem, though the ‘trick’ was soon evident when the Pepperpots came on stage to perform live! Once again they delivered their hilarious version of ‘If I Was Not Upon The Stage’ to the delight of the audience who clapped and cheered at the end. For those who wish to see them again, The Pepperpot Players will be performing the whodunit, ‘Death In High Heels’, at Shanklin Theatre during early October 2019 (tickets on sale in June). Videos and act images continued on screen, starting with the boom years of the 1950s through to the present day which ended showing Theatre Managers and FOST Volunteers going about their (tongue in cheek) work, most of whom were in the audience watching themselves on screen! Another surprised followed: James Derbyshire from Spotlight IOW showed his excellent repertoire of skills by singing live ‘Feeling Good’ and performing an Elvis number whilst making the audience laugh by cracking jokes – a change from his regular performances at the Theatre in ‘Beyond The West End’ and Christmas Pantos. 18 | P a g e
Once again, Roger introduced video messages from the stars, with the exception of Ray Allen being in the auditorium this time to see the very amusing on-screen antics of Joe Pasquale doing his best to put Ray off giving a sincere message of congratulations for the 10th Anniversary of the Theatre. Above: James Derbyshire – Spotlight IOW. FOST had commissioned a lovely glass memento for Vic Farrow, originally intended to be presented to Vic at the 10th Anniversary Celebration. Now the opportunity arose for David Kast, Theatre MD, to present the memento to Vic on stage: a moving occasion but great to see Vic looking so much better and enjoying the evening. Finally, some on-screen fireworks celebrated the occasion, followed by a rather silly short video about visiting the bar – dreadful screen colours, sound and video sync well off and such a long flight of stairs leading downstairs to the bar! However, the evening wasn’t yet over. There was food downstairs and the bar was open for drinks. To further show appreciation of the huge amount of effort put in by volunteers in keeping Shanklin Theatre running, Janet Wardle, FOST Chairman, presented 5 Year Service badges to many of the volunteers – these were much appreciated and can be seen being proudly worn by volunteers. 19 | P a g e
It won’t be long before some volunteers become eligible for 10 Year Service badges. A future celebration to come!

‘Name a Seat’ Update Let’s welcome our latest 'Name a Seat' supporters; Patron’s Wendy & Michael Murwill and the great team from the Landguard Road Co-op Shanklin. Thanks for all your support during the Co-op Causes initiative. You can "Name a Seat" for a minimum donation of £50.00 that lasts for ten years. Your special or personal message will be engraved onto a plaque which will be affixed to an auditorium or balcony seat of your choice, thus making it a very special part of the theatre's history. Dedicate to Someone Special You can name a seat: * In your own name or family name. * In memory of someone special, a family member or a loved one. * As a gift to someone special celebrating a life event, a birthday, wedding, anniversary, retirement or even the birth of a baby. * In the name of a group, company, association or business etc. In addition, you will receive an official certificate of support from the theatre confirming your seat location and a guided tour of the theatre. Shanklin Theatre ‘On the Map’
Shanklin Theatre is well and truly on the map of the 2019 Isle of Wight Walking Festival. As part of the Walking festival, a group of FOST volunteers will be leading a walk around Shanklin stopping at Shanklin Theatre for refreshments. The walk emphasis will be on the volunteer community of Shanklin with some snippets of history along the route. Walk one and two: ‘Shanklin Coast to Country’ Monday 6Th May & Sunday 19th May 2019. Admire Shanklin’s panoramic coastal views, Chine, Old Village and hills whilst discovering its volunteer community aspect, all with a hint of history. Refreshments will be provided at the Victorian Shanklin Theatre, one of the town’s greatest volunteering success stories. Start time: 1:15 pm Length: 4 miles Duration: 3h Price: Voluntary donation requested but not obligatory. Vic & Ken Dodd
The legendary Ken Dodd passed away on the 11th March 2018. Ken graced our stage back in 2014 and performed (until midnight) to a full theatre. This short story starts in November 2000, when our theatre chairman, Mr Vic Farrow owned and ran the ‘Screen de Luxe’ Cinema in Lake. Vic had been a long time fan of Ken, and experienced the pleasure of seeing this highly entertaining and intelligent comedian perform at the London Palladium and other top venues. Vic had a plan – A plan to get Ken over onto the Island to perform for the Isle of Wight. Vic put pen to paper and wrote to Ken directly on the 16th November 2000. Thirteen days later Mr Dodd replied, sadly Ken declined the offer to perform on the Island stating that the journey at the age of 73 would probably be too long and strenuous. Ken wrote back; ‘I have to say that at the moment, I don’t think I could manage to take you up on the offer because it is such a long way, and my shows tend to be on the mainland and the older one gets the less one likes the travelling which, as you know, can be very exhausting especially with the problems on the road today’. Vic replied thanking Ken for his reply but also to extend an open invitation to perform on the Island. Vic being the tenacious 23 | P a g e
character we all know never gave up on his quest to get Ken onto the Island, the letters kept being exchanged between Vic and Ken and even Ken’s wife Anne got involved. Ken had mentioned that he was performing at Bournemouth and at Ferneham Hall in Fareham in the spring of 2001, Vic seized his opportunity; ‘It’s perhaps worth mentioning that we are only a short journey from Portsmouth, itself very close to Fareham for example, and I could easily arrange for you to be picked up from any southern venue if it would help. It’s my love of tradition of entertainment that makes me so keen that we see you’. The years passed by but the contact continued, and in 2014 some fourteen years later from the first letter sent to Ken, a show was organised and booked for his first appearance on the Shanklin Theatre stage. Ken Dodd went down a storm. His performance included rapid and incessant delivery of often surreal jokes, and would run for several hours, and past midnight to the chagrin of our dedicated usherettes! His verbal and physical comedy was supplemented by his red, white and blue “tickling stick” prop, and often introduced by his characteristic upbeat greeting of “How tickled I am!” He interspersed the comedy with songs, both serious and humorous, and with his original speciality, ventriloquism. After Ken’s death, Vic wrote to his widow Lady Anne Dodd in July 2018; ‘The reason for my writing is to express personally, and on behalf of the theatre, our condolences, regarding the sad loss of such a great man as Ken. The amount of memories that the visit of you both to this theatre will be treasured by all for many years to come. So I really wanted to let you know how much we appreciate this. As you know, it took between you and me a long while to make it happen and it was so wonderful when it finally occurred, as this was a dream come true for me and, of course the audience, who still talk about it today’. FOST CORPORATE MEMBERS FOST Corporate members are businesses passionate about the theatre and who support it with their Corporate membership. In return, their company is advertised in our FOST website which is open to anyone and our FOST newsletter circulated to over 600 members from the Isle of Wight and beyond. The Island Savoyards started the festive season with A Christmas Carol, then Theatre Train presented Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, followed by Goldilocks and the Three Bears from First Act. The Nutcracker by the Russian Ballet was magical, then A Victorian Christmas with Robert Powell and Susan Jameson took us to Christmas past with traditional tunes and carols. The fabulous Stylistics and the amazing 10cc had the theatre ringing with all their classic hits and between them raised £395. Henry VIII was the subject of the talk by David Starkey, and Lucy Worsley looked into the life of Queen Victoria, making history both entertaining and informative. Spotlight (IOW) Ltd’s sell-out pantomime Sleeping Beauty ended the season on 2nd January, when the theatre was closed to undergo its annual refit. The Spring Brochure is now available, featuring shows to cater for all tastes. The Bucket collection continues to support the Theatre in many ways. Thank You for your generosity.
