Chairman’s Foreword
This is the last issue of Stage Write before our Annual General Meeting at the Theatre on 16th April and I do hope that many of you will be able to join us for that evening. Our meeting will be commencing at 7.30 pm with doors open from 7.00 pm. Further details and various forms for the AGM will be sent to all FOST Members at least a month before. Each AGM also represents the end of the FOST Committee ‘Year’. During that meeting through the various reports, we will certainly look back over a busy 12 months where our Theatre has continued to grow and once again we have been able to count on all our volunteers rising to the challenge of keeping this lovely old Theatre of ours going. However, those of you aware of the Theatre’s history will know that back in 2008 things were not looking quite so rosy for the 2|Page
Theatre, which looked doomed for closure. However, fast forward to 2018 and we will now be celebrating the 10th Anniversary of saving Shanklin Theatre at a special evening event we have planned for 2nd October. During that evening, we will have a number of local groups and associations who regularly appear at our Theatre performing for us. We will also hear more about the Theatre’s history, as well as the various activities and events that have taken place throughout the last 10 years helping establish Shanklin Theatre become a thriving and major performance venue in the UK. More details for this special celebration will be available in the coming weeks via Shanklin Theatre’s website and of course we will also be publishing details directly to FOST Members, who will also be eligible for a special discounted ticket price. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and catching up on all the activities at Shanklin Theatre and will look forward to seeing those of you who can make it at our forthcoming AGM. A Message from the Editor
Thank you for reading our March edition of “Stage Write” magazine, I hope you find the content interesting, useful and informative. As we all look forward to the long awaited Easter break, I would like to tell you about some of our excellent first class entertainment and shows coming your way in March, April & May. On the 3rd March we welcome the wonderful Chicago Blues Brothers performing their high-octane ‘Back to Black’ show. Direct from the USA, the only official Andy Williams tribute show starring Jimmy Osmond ‘Moon River and Me’ on the 11th March and The Island Savoyards present their musical adaptation of the 2010 film ‘Made In Dagenham’ over the Easter weekend. As we spring into April, the Anthony Horowitz's MINDGAME psychological thriller hits our stage and runs from the 4th – 7th. Irish Legends, the FUREYS return for another great night of music, songs and stories in this their 40th Anniversary year on the 14th & Georgie Fame on the 15th April. A Spoonful of Sherman ‘The Songbook of your Childhood’ has three dates on the 18th-19th &20th and finishing off the month with Brian Conley – ‘Still the Greatest Entertainer’ on the 25th April. May is super packed starting with an Audience with Ian Waite and Oti Mabuse – ‘Rhythm of the Night’ (limited tickets left), the hilarious Barron Knights on the 11th, Jason Donovan And His Amazing Midlife Crisis on the 19th, these and other numerous first class acts coming to our Shanklin stage over the next three months or so. Highlight of a FOST Christmas
A full house that gathered on the 14th December for the Christmas Breakfast organised annually by FOST had special guests attending. Yes! Father Christmas found time in his busy schedule to call in at Shanklin Theatre to meet up with the Volunteers, Staff and Directors who were enjoying a special two course breakfast. Escorting and helping Santa were two ‘elves’ well known to many of the Friends. They distributed chocolate presents and the lucky ticket number was drawn. The winner of a ‘Prosecco and Chocolate Box’ donated by Bookers was our previous FOST Secretary, Gwyn Dawson. In addition to a full Isle of Wight cooked breakfast, a starter of either Smoked Salmon or Grapefruit was enjoyed, whilst the Theatre received over a £100 profit from the morning’s festivities. A Day of the Theatre
It is morning and Shanklin is waking up. The Theatre is no exception – it’s time to tidy up from the night before and get the Theatre ready for another day with its evening show to come. Management and Housekeeping arrive – Management to open up the Theatre and Housekeeping to clean everything from the auditorium and toilets to polishing the brasswork that welcomes patrons to shows. Soon the Box Office staff arrive to switch on the computers, check emails and print tickets from the online booking system before the Box Office opens for those wishing to book tickets in person, perhaps having heard about shows through the efforts of various volunteers such as: Brochure Distribution, Social Media, Website, Promotional Events or the in-house publication for FOST members, Stage Write. Soon Theatre Management/Operations is busy with deliveries: there’s supplies for the Bar, stationery, ice-cream, sweetshop plus leaflets and posters on upcoming acts. Not to mention visitors to test fire alarms or check the mobile phone equipment that supplies Shanklin with mobile coverage from the antennae on the roof. Of course there’s always phone calls to Bookings with enquiries from the many agents wishing to book their acts at the Theatre, often more than a year in advance! With so many activities creating a lot of accounting work for Finance, keeping the ‘books’ in order is a never ending 6|Page
task. There are reports to generate for the upcoming Board meeting and, of course, there is always the tax man to keep happy. As Housekeeping noticed a loose door lock, a note is put in the box for Maintenance to check when they arrive. The Theatre is a ‘mature’ building, so there’s always something needing repair or replacement, be it a water heater or a window. Soon a local engineering company arrives to continue work on repairing metal windows, funded by donations from local community organisations and money raised by the Theatre Prize Draw and Bucket Collection volunteers. Later that day the Stars of the evening show arrive. Lots of activities follow requiring the expertise of the Theatre’s Sound/Lighting and Stage Management – equipment to bring inside and setup on stage, stage lighting to define, sound checks to carry out, with a plan for smooth running of the show to consider. The stars are peckish, so Catering has been busy preparing food, ensuring that no one goes hungry. It’s not long before the show starts: the Theatre is gleaming once again, customers are busy arriving to purchase or collect tickets and the Stars are occupied with a final rehearsal. Bar volunteers arrive to open up and ensure there will be ready supplies of beverages for thirsty theatre-goers. There’s a good selection, including local Isle of Wight beers.
Cont’d: For those with a sweet tooth, the Sweet Shop is manned and stock checked for opening. Now there’s a buzz in the air as the large group of Theatre Ushers assembles in their smart black evening wear, ready to welcome customers for this evening’s show. Luckily the Theatre has the support of membership, Training and Welfare to ensure the necessary numbers of FOST volunteers in all departments is recruited and supported in their various activities (the Theatre has only four paid staff members in Operations, Finance, Sound/Lighting and Stage Management). Finally, it’s time for the Ushers to open the doors to the public, arriving on foot and by coach, as they enter the front of the Theatre, passing the lovely plant and flower arrangements cared for by the Gardening Team. Curtain up and the show is underway! Everyone has a great time, including a drink in the bar at the interval, perhaps something from the Ice-Cream seller,
Sweetshop or purchasing a Souvenir. Of course, the show must end and the audience is happily chatting away discussing the show as they leave the Theatre, possibly throwing coins into the buckets on the way out and helping to support the Theatre. But it’s not just a case of opening the exit doors; many people have arrived by coach, so Management are busy on the short-wave radios organising and directing coaches as they are instructed one-by-one to arrive and pickup their customers to take back to their respective hotels. It doesn’t take long before the Theatre is once again empty of audience and the doors are closed. But there’s still tidying to do in the auditorium (the Bar was closed after the interval so it is now tidied up), even checking for lost property. Then there’s the equipment on stage to pack away and return to the vehicles in the car park – perhaps another hour before this is completed. Finally all is tidied up, the stage is clear again and the Theatre can be put to bed, ready to start all over again the next day with a thorough clean by Housekeeping and a Theatre tour for potential new volunteers. There’s another show to put on, and the Theatre’s customers are looking forward to another great evening! Rob Robertson.

Sandown Honour Trail
The Friends of Shanklin Theatre are delighted to have their own personal named tile in the Sandown Honour Trail originally instigated by Sharon Merrick. The inscribed tiles are situated on the sea wall, starting at the pier end of Sandown Central Beach working their way down to Eastern Gardens. You can have any inscription of your choice; the tiles are designed to provide a positive and uplifting welcome to all residents and tourists. In conjunction with the Sandown Community Partnership, the tiles are mounted twice a year. Each ceramic paving tile costs £50.00; this includes the laying of the tile and any wording of your choice. Ventnor Botanic Gardens 6th Annual Volunteers’ Fair
The Friends of Shanklin Theatre attended the 6th Annual Volunteers’ Fair 2018 at Ventnor Botanic Gardens on Saturday the 13th January. Working in partnership with the Isle of Wight Volunteer Centre & Ventnor Botanic Garden. Many thanks to everyone that came along to see us, thanks to the volunteers for all for your help, and of course special thanks also to Jacqui Robertson for being there the whole day and for setting & packing up etc.

A Spoonful of Sherman
A Spoonful of Sherman-The Songbook of your Childhood is a musical revue that celebrates a century of Sherman family song writing and has been created by Robert J Sherman (son of Robert B Sherman) who will also be touring with the show. This year the show will receive its premiere UK and International tour and Shanklin Theatre is delighted to be part of the tour between the 18 th and 20th April. As I’m sure you’re aware, the Sherman brothers wrote the songs for some of ‘classic' Disney’s most famous films including Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Junglebook and The Aristocats. The show includes songs that span 100 years of Sherman family song writing history (“Supercal…", "Chim- chim cher-ee", "Its a Small World (After All)", "Winnie the Pooh", "Feed The Birds"), and ends on a rousing rendition of "Let’s Go Fly a Kite!” It’s a “truly” perfect evening for young and old. Rather excitingly, travelling with the show will be an original Oscar and Grammy Award. This will allow for some unique photo opportunities. There will be relevant memorabilia on display at the theatre. This production will include a stunning set design, integrated projection, two pianos and cast. Car Park Resurfacing Before & After
To ease rain water runoff, a new gully soak away has been created at the entrance of the car park; this will ensure adequate drainage and prevention of flooding onto the adjoining road network. Above: Preparation of old car park surface. Back in January our
well used & tired old car park underwent resurfacing work, now completed. New signage & white lining will be added to enhance and improve safety for our visiting acts, staff & volunteers.

Firemen at Shanklin Institute before it was converted to the Town Hall in 1913
Shanklin firemen practising with their 'new escape ladder', I'd estimate pre-WW1. The art of the fireman's carry down a ladder remained a pass or fail element of the recruits course. I attended in 1996 but was made subject to a mountain of health and safety measures when used in training and has since been superseded by an alternative method called face-to-face. The responsibility of carrying another person in this manner is tremendous but doesn't even come close to the terror felt by the casualty! Being the smallest bloke on my course I was a popular choice as the stricken man for everybody else to carry, not a day in my life I'd wish to repeat. A Magnificent donation towards our ‘Name a Seat’ Initiative
Back in November last year, our managing director Vic Farrow was contacted by local business man Alan Morgan. Alan who is a keen supporter of the theatre said, he would like to contribute towards the theatre’s restoration and maintenance programme by way of a seat dedication. Vic was obviously over the moon to receive such great news. Unbeknown to Vic at that time was that Alan actually wanted to name not one, but ten seats at the theatre, all in the names of his family. Fantastic! The plaques were ordered and affixed to centre row G seats in the balcony area of the theatre; the row of named seats in the Morgan name looks pretty impressive! We would like to personally thank Alan for his generosity and for naming ten seats at Shanklin Theatre. Thank you!

Shanklin Green Towns Beach Clean
Louise Bond, Chris Quirk & Michael Beston, staff and volunteers of the Theatre attended a two hour beach clean along Shanklin Esplanade between Hope Beach Car-Park & Luccombe Groynes back on the 13th January. Arranged by our friends at Shanklin Green Towns, over 50 volunteers turned out for this great event collecting a flat bed truck full of mixed rubbish and litter etc. Our continued thanks go to all our hard working people of Shanklin Green Towns Group. Bucket Fund Update
Mid February 2018 Grand Total: £125,278! During the run-up to Christmas we had a variety of shows. The Russian State Ballet and Opera House’s ‘Swan Lake’ enthralled the audience, who raised more than £214. Comedy lovers had tons of laughs, courtesy of Jimeoin, Rich Hall and Ed Byrne, raising £426. As a community theatre, we are the chosen venue for the Christmas productions of our local groups: Island band Lucid filled the theatre, whose loyal fans contributed £103 to the Bucket Fund. The Spotlight IW ‘kids’ show’, both shows from Footsteps, the matinee and evening performances of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ by Theatre Train and December’s enchanting production of ‘The Snow Queen’ by learning disabilities group First Act 2011 collectively brought in £623. Fantastic! This highlights the importance of keeping our theatre open and thriving for everyone to enjoy. The 13-show run of Spotlight IW Ltd’s pantomime ‘Dick Whittington and his Cat’ was a huge success again and raised £2244. February opened with two tribute acts: ‘The Lionel Richie Song Book’ produced £109, and ‘Faith - The George Michael Legacy’ - collected £130. Comedy acts Jimmy Carr and Milton Jones raised between them £389. With the colourful range of acts to look forward to this spring, we should be raising plenty of money for the Bucket Fund!
