Chairman’s Foreword
My thanks to all of the FOST Members who attended the AGM back in April, where we looked back on yet another busy year at our theatre. During that meeting you would have also heard about me standing down from the FOST Committee as Chair, in order to move across to the other side of the theatre operation as Managing Director! This followed a decision by Vic Farrow to step back from some aspects of his role, following the many years of full-on support that he has given to the theatre and hopefully this will now enable Vic to take something of a well-earned break! However, Vic will be remaining as Chairman of Shanklin Theatre Ltd and I’m also delighted to say, will be around to all of us in an advisory capacity, as and when required. In my final Chair’s report to the AGM, I mentioned that carrying out that role had provided a unique opportunity for me to understand all the different facets of the FOST operation and the myriad of ways in which it supported Shanklin Theatre. We really are fortunate to have so many dedicated and talented individuals giving their time and experience free, keeping this lovely old theatre of ours going. Now in my new role there is another dimension to this understanding, by adding how grateful the management team of the theatre is for the support you all give to us. We really couldn’t do it without you! FOST now has a new and very capable Chairman in Janet Wardle. Having worked alongside Janet on the 2|Page
Committee, I know that she will do an excellent job. I’d also like to take this opportunity of thanking all members of the Committee for the help and support they have given to me over the last couple of years and to wish Janet and our new Committee all the very best for the coming year. At the first committee meeting after the A.G.M, I was voted into the post of FOST Chairman. I joined the committee two years ago, when David Kast was beginning his chairmanship, learning all the aspects involved in running the Friends of Shanklin Theatre. I would like to thank David for all his hard work, and wish him well in his new role at the theatre. For those of you who do not know me, I have been volunteering at the theatre since 2010 in the box office. Those were the days! Before computers, when a customer bought tickets we had to cross the seats off a paper plan, fill in various pieces of paper recording the sale, and then hand write every ticket. For a busy evening show we had to learn to write fast. From those early days, we moved into the computer age and streamlined our systems, making life so much easier for box office staff. Since retiring from my business life, I spend more of my free
time at this beautiful theatre. You can still find me in the box office, job sharing the role of Box Office Manager. The Friends of Shanklin Theatre committee work hard to ensure that funds raised are spent not only on the fabric of the building, but on essential technical equipment that means we can put on the best shows possible. Many performers love our theatre and the welcome we give, and keep coming back to entertain us. New this year is the show Forever in Blue Jeans, with performances in May, June, July and August. A feast of entertainment, with singers, dancers and musicians. If you like Country Music and Rock & Roll, this is the show for you. From May to October we have our summer show, beyond The West End, which just keeps on getting better and better every year. With many more shows to look forward to, there is no excuse; come and enjoy all that Shanklin Theatre has to offer. I am looking forward to my year as Chairman, especially with the Garden Party and our 10th Anniversary Celebration highlighting our programme. Janet Wardle.

Thank you for reading our June edition of “Stage Write” magazine, I hope you find the content interesting, useful and informative. As you would have read from David Kast’s foreword as outgoing Chairman of FOST, I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank David for all his hard work and commitment to the theatre over the past two years or so. I also look forward to working with him in his new role as Shanklin Theatre MD. I’m also delighted to welcome Janet Wardle as our incoming Chairman of FOST, Janet brings in a whole wealth of knowledge from working within the theatre box office. I’m certain that she will excel in her new role together with the full support of her committee colleagues. Many thanks to everyone that attended the FOST AGM at Shanklin Theatre back in April this year. We are delighted to report that our committee has eleven elected members; we look forward to working for you on behalf of the theatre over the next twelve months. Jimmy Osmond Tweets!
Jimmy Osmond recently took his show, ‘Moon River & Me – A Tribute to Andy Williams’, to Shanklin Theatre and as part of the hospitality provided to Jimmy and his band, the Green Room Catering Team from The Friends of Shanklin Theatre provided them with supper before their performance. On the menu was Chicken in White Wine sauce with Dauphinoise Potatoes, followed by Pavlova. Jimmy was so impressed by his meal that he tweeted a picture of himself with the Catering Team and as he called it, ‘their Yummy Pavlova’. As readers may recall, back in 2016 Jimmy did well reaching the final of BBC’s Celebrity Master Chef, so the Team were slightly nervous in catering for him, but as you can see they came up trumps!

This of course is not the first visit to Shanklin Theatre for Jimmy. Back in December 2016 two of the Osmond brothers, Jay & Merrill, performed alongside Jimmy in their world famous show, ‘The Andy Williams Christmas Extravaganza Variety Show’ to a full and packed theatre. Our catering team prepared and cooked a wonderful pre-show dinner for the visiting American stars in the theatre’s Green Room. Speaking after the show, Jay Osmond said, “I absolutely love Shanklin & the Old Village, I think it’s cute. I would love to return in the summer months to explore more of your wonderful Island.”

Ken Dodd
We were heartbroken to hear of the passing of Ken Dodd on the 11 March 2018. Ken graced our stage back in 2014 and performed (until midnight) to a full theatre, our thoughts were extended to his family and friends at the time. ‘Ken Dodd, the master of making people happy’. A lifelong resident of Knotty Ash in Liverpool, Ken's career as an entertainer started in the mid-1950s. His performances included rapid and incessant delivery of often surreal jokes, and would run for several hours, frequently past midnight. His verbal and physical comedy was supplemented by his red, white and blue "tickling stick" prop, and often introduced by his characteristic upbeat greeting of "How tickled I am!" He interspersed the comedy with songs, both serious and humorous, and with his original speciality, ventriloquism. He also had several hit singles primarily as a ballad singer in the 1960s, and occasionally appeared in dramatic roles. He performed on radio and television, and popularised the characters of the ‘Diddy Men’.

Local Community News Shanklin’s Shoppers Helping to Maintain Town’s Theatre
On the 23rd March, a cheque for £50 was presented to The Friends of Shanklin Theatre (FOST) thanks to an ongoing fundraising initiative by a local Co-Op store. Friends Chairman David Kast and Vice Chairman Michael Beston met with Simon Thompson of Shanklin’s Landguard Road Co-Op to receive the monies raised from the store’s Local Causes programme. Every time you buy Co-Op own brand products at the Landguard Road store, present your Co-Op membership card at the till and 1% will be allocated to The Friends of Shanklin Theatre and 5% of what you spend will go into your own membership account. Introducing Matt Day
Hello Stage-Write readers, My name is Matt Day; I was born in sunny Kingston-upon-Thames some 40 plus years ago. My love of Shanklin began in the 1980s when my Dad brought my sister and me here on summer holidays. I have fond memories of playing on the beach, exploring America Woods and playing pool on Shanklin pier. It wasn't until 2008 when I met Sophie and rediscovered the Isle of Wight on the first of our many holidays here. Sharing a passion for theatre and live music we've laughed at Inspector Drake, rocked along to Think Floyd and rolled in the aisles at our first panto together - Dick Whittington and his Cat. I knew I wanted to volunteer at this wonderful venue and when we finally moved to Shanklin in July 2017 I signed up in September.... but first there was the small matter of mine and Sophie's wedding in October! I joined the Box Office team soon after and began training (and still learning now). It's been a great experience which I'd recommend to anyone. So much has been achieved first by the hard work and dedication of the volunteers. Ten years on and Shanklin Theatre is attracting ever bigger names. Jimmy Carr and Sarah Millican being huge successes recently. But how do you continue to promote such success? Well, that's where I come in - coordinating social media. Facebook, Twitter et al are neat ways to keep the wider community informed and involved. ''Followers'' of

Shanklin Theatre are instantly notified of the latest shows, competitions and news. A good example being when a handful of Jimmy Carr tickets was released for his sell out shows. Within five minutes of posting the news, the box office phone was ringing off the hook! Working closely with the theatre's team, I'll be carrying on the job of publicising events, encouraging new volunteers and community interaction. Theatre Improving Ticketing Services
Shanklin Theatre’s Box Office and Online ticketing services are unusual in that, for the size of the Theatre, the software and service is owned and provided by the Theatre rather than a 3rd party. Similarly sized theatres typically make use of 3rd party application providers to provide the software and ticketing services, something that is often easily seen in the rather basic and restricted websites visible to customers purchasing tickets from home. The custom design of Shanklin Theatre’s website makes it visually attractive – this is remarked upon by agents for acts as it gives the Theatre an excellent image and presentation. However, ownership of the software means the Theatre must carry out maintenance and upgrading of the applications: the time had come for a number of upgrades to assist with different aspects of the ticketing services. Communications and Ticket Printing Infrastructure Following a review of requirements, an upgrade program was started in late 2017, kicking off with improvements to the Theatre’s Internet communications facilities, providing higher data rates for computers and new digital phones to allow the Box Office to take up to 3 simultaneous calls from customers (compared with a single call previously). Additional ticket printing machines were installed to speed up providing tickets at busy times to those calling in person at the Box Office. Box Office Ticketing Software Improvements Early in 2018, work started on improving the Box Office ticketing software used by volunteers to print tickets for ticket orders via the Internet and for those calling in person at the Box Office. The aim of improvements is to make using the software easier and quicker for both volunteers and customers: for example, when a customer comes to the Box Office, volunteers need to find the customer in the database if the customer has purchased tickets before. This may sound straightforward, but customers frequently 14 | P a g e
cannot remember their postcode, email address or telephone number! Spelling errors don’t help either. Thankfully improvements to the search facility make it much quicker to locate a specific customer as, with over 40,000 registered customers, volunteers cannot just look through the list! With one software upgrade already released this year and being used, a second has been specified and again there will be a number of improvements, eliminating the need for many post-it notes stuck on the sides of computer monitors. For new volunteers, easier to use software means less to learn and remember, that will lead to fewer mistakes in issuing tickets. Customer On-line Software Improvements Web pages used by customers purchasing tickets via the Internet are being improved to make options clearer when purchasing tickets: for example, whether tickets are being collected or are to be posted to the customer. Customers will be able to purchase vouchers more easily, with the online application clearly showing voucher values when they are used to purchase tickets. Vouchers make for great presents and the Theatre expects to sell a good number in the run-up to Christmas especially. This year the General Data Protection Regulations come into effect, helping to ensure data security and also make clear how organisations make use of collected data. In order to comply with the GDPR, the Theatre must collect additional information on when a new customer registers and also what promotional information the customer agrees to receive. Consequently, customer online registration and information pages are being updated to comply with the GDPR. Volunteer Training Facility With changes to software and procedures at the Box Office, volunteers must be kept up-to-date with these changes. Consequently, the Theatre plans to set up a training environment, with different computers used to replicate the customer making bookings at home, the Manager setting up new online shows and Box Office volunteers carrying out their ticket issuing activities. A large screen TV replicates the Box Office computer screen for all to see.

Con’t: Previously, training was carried out on-the-job in the active Box Office; a scary proposition as one wrong click of a mouse could result in unintended consequences! The training environment will make for learning that is more relaxing; if a show is accidentally deleted there’s no problem – it wasn’t the real show anyway and no one is going to complain. Ongoing Investment The Theatre is proud of its ticketing facilities, with a number of improvements already released this year and more in the planning, helping to ensure a smoother and more accurate service for customers. This level of support doesn’t come cheap: it is estimated that around £14,000 is needed to complete this project. Unlike many theatres, Shanklin Theatre doesn’t make a booking charge, providing excellent value for show tickets. Everyone’s support helps hugely in keeping costs down: remember as Birthdays or Christmas approaches that a Theatre voucher makes for a great present! March was a busy time with Jasper Carrott, Russell Watson and Jimmy Osmond. The Island Savoyards presented an excellent run of Made in Dagenham, the musical about the 1968 strike at Ford’s of Dagenham car plant. Some of us might remember the actual event! The sums collected totalled over £1,050, which added to the end of year total, as above.
April had a treat for fans of Anthony Horowitz as his psychological thriller, MindGame, subtly played tricks on us throughout this first-rate play. Its five performances raised £137. Music from tributes Coldplace and Cregan & Co, and Irish bands The Fureys and the Dublin Legends raised over £390. Brian Conley’s great show gained £177. Musical theatre concerts Beyond the Barricade, and A Spoonful of Sherman telling the story of the Oscar-winning Sherman Brothers - two fabulous shows - collected £220. First Act took on the Bard with a Ruff Guide to Shakespeare, in their usual style, and raised £116.76.
In May, Sarah Millican’s two sell-out shows raised £978.42 for her Charity The Samaritans. She generously donated half of this sum to the Bucket Collection, the remainder going to the Isle of Wight Samaritans. Sarah will now gain third position on the Top Shows list, with £489.21. The Barron Knights, Jason Donovan, the comedy Seriously Dead all collected over £186. The Summer Season is now well under way with the opening of Beyond the West End, and we look forward to seeing you there! Alana Bird.

Shanklin Theatre celebrates 10 years of saving the theatre from closure with a special celebration variety show. At this non-profit show: Receive a free souvenir programme in addition to other souvenirs to take home. Watch a number of island acts perform – both professional and amateur groups entertaining with humour, dance and song.
Experience the Theatre’s history from initial construction through to present day via short audiovisual screen presentations. 10 years ago the Theatre was threatened with closure and demolition.
