Chairman’s Foreword Well here we are again at the start of another FOST Committee year! I’d like to thank all of you who attended our AGM on the 24th April and also those members elected to our Committee for the coming year. When I became Chair of the Friends last year, I began my first foreword for Stage Write by saying how amazed I was to learn of all the work taking place to keep our lovely old Theatre going. A year on this amazement continues! We really are so fortunate to have differing teams of volunteers who give their time freely, operating the many different functions required for the smooth operation of the theatre. Not all these roles are immediately obvious, but as you’ll read later on in this issue, one visible example at present rests with the work taking place within the window replacement programme on windows either side of our Theatre entrance. Here volunteers in our maintenance team are using their skills and expertise alongside external contractors, saving the Theatre considerable extra cost. Things have definitely come a long way since the formation of FOST and next year will see our 10 th Anniversary. In the coming months we shall certainly be making plans to mark this milestone. In this issue you’ll also see information on Committee Members being appointed as Group Representatives. Alongside our usual roles such as Treasurer, Secretary, etc, these members will be responsible for representing specific functions with FOST. This does not mean that they are in charge of the areas they are covering, as we already have supervisors or coordinators in place for these. However, their prime role will be to ensure that all departments are regularly represented in Committee and this will hopefully enhance communication both ways. I’d like to end by thanking Terry and Gwyn Dawson for their help and support over the last year, as our Treasurer and Secretary. As well as looking after our funds, Terry was involved in helping review our Constitution and also assisted with our finances coming under the umbrella of the Shanklin Theatre and Community Trust. FOST still has direct control over its funds and how they are allocated, but this move was necessary to ensure that financially, FOST had the right recognition for charitable purposes. Gwyn has been a member of FOST since its very inception and has given the Committee and me, first class support as our Secretary. Both are stepping down from their roles to enjoy a well-earned break. I’m pleased to say that alongside his role as our Front of House Supervisor, Peter Frankling will be taking on the role of Treasurer and plans are underway for a new Secretary. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of Stage Write. All best wishes for the coming summer and hopefully you will be able to come along to our Garden Party on Sunday 23rd July. Help Wanted
This is a plea to all those who may have any memorabilia to do with the theatre - be it newspapers cuttings, photos etc - I need your help please. Not quite sure how, but I seem to have acquired responsibility for the compilation of the FOST scrapbook. Whilst I have been diligently collecting cuttings from the middle of 2015 there is a paucity of cuttings and photos from 2011 onwards. I am endeavouring to work my way through the CP archives but this is a long and time consuming task and any cuttings that you may have will be more than gratefully received. I understand that you may not want to part with any originals of either cuttings or photos, but copies will be just as welcome.
We do not have many photos of events that the theatre has taken part in and any that people have taken of workers and volunteers about their daily tasks; the date and source of said cuttings is essential and can be added lightly on back of photos/cuttings or noted separately. Ideally, I would like to do two copies of the scrapbook - one for the public to look at in the box office (to show off our achievements) and another to be placed in the usherette's room so the volunteers - new and old - can look at it and reminisce over our triumphs and struggles and more importantly our successes. Theatre Volunteer Training
In December 2016, the theatre again won praise at the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Business Awards evening at Cowes Yacht Haven, being awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the County Press sponsored ‘Business Investment Category’. But it doesn’t stop there…………….. The Friends continue to strive to improve year on year, and whilst we like to claim that our volunteers are amongst the best trained on the Island, we have now gone one step further. At the end of February 2017, fifteen members spent the day with a professional tutor from Tourism South East on how we can improve customer care in the theatre. Some may ask, given the excellent ratings on Trip Advisor and all the wonderful comments on Facebook, why do we need to spend money on this type of training? To answer that quite simply, in the business of providing excellence at the theatre, you can’t afford to rest on your laurels, and those friendly smiles and helpful answers may look second nature, and usually are, but there will always be those few customers who cause annoyance to other people in the theatre. Our volunteers then have to know how to deal with the problem. We hope that this specialist training will now help us build a programme of our own, amongst the volunteers to pass on good practice and to continue getting more certificates of excellence. You will see them proudly wearing gold badges as they serve you or help you to your seat. We say thank you to them for giving up yet another day for the theatre. Peter Coleman. 5|Page
John Suchet - A Tale of Two Composers Mozart and Strauss
On the 1st April, Shanklin Theatre Patron and the voice of Classic FM’s weekday mornings, John Suchet, presented in person a fascinating and in depth talk on some of the greatest composers the world has known; their music, their lives and their inspiration. Based on his three books, John’s passion for and knowledge of classical music made for an inspiring, educational and interesting talk for a variety audience with audience questions answered. After John’s compelling, captivating and fascinating talk presentation, some of our lucky audience & volunteers had an opportunity to speak with him and have their book signed by John himself. The Theatre's Facelift Continues
Don't be concerned if you notice
the front of the Theatre is boarded up! Renovations of the Theatre's windows are continuing, with the two large windows either side of the main entrance now removed for refurbishment thanks to generous donations from those who love the theatre.
The windows will be repaired and coated with a baked on paint finish to bring them back to their original splendour.

Meeting Martin
In April this year, we received a message from Kathryn Grimes who had been instrumental in setting up the Wight Brainy Bunch Charity Organisation. Kathryn set up the charity following her husband's diagnosis of a brain tumour back in 2015. The charity is designed to provide support for Isle of Wight families affected by brain tumours. Kathryn asked us if there was any possibility of meeting Martin Kemp and having a picture taken. Having undergone surgery himself on two brain tumours, she said it would be inspiring for our support group members to see a success story and know they can go on to achieve amazing things. With the help from our theatre MD Mr Vic Farrow & Martin’s management team (OEP), we successfully arranged a special meet and greet for Kathryn’s Husband Mark during Martin’s show back in May this year. Kathryn goes on to write; “We were lucky enough to meet Martin Kemp prior to his show “An Audience with Martin Kemp” at Shanklin Theatre on the 7th May. Having been a fan of Martin during his days with Spandau Ballet in the 80’s, our interest recently has been on a far more personal note. Martin himself underwent surgery for a brain tumour in 1995 and reading his story there were similarities to our own story…. A man in his early thirties with a young family, struck by the same awful disease and life as you know it changed forever!

Con’t - We set up our small Island Charity “The Wight Brainy Bunch” following Marks diagnosis of a brain tumour in February 2015, to help raise awareness and funds for brain tumour research. Realising the distinct lack of support here on the Island, our aim is to provide a support network for patients and their families, both emotionally and financially, who have been affected by brain tumours here on the Isle of Wight. Having Mark and Martin in the same room was both inspirational and encouraging for the families we meet through our support group to see someone doing so well, two years and twenty two years following surgery and it was very interesting to hear that Martin (worlds apart from us) felt the same lack of support and loneliness at this time in his life. Through our ongoing fundraising, The Wight Brainy Bunch hopes to be able to support many more Island families coping with this devastating disease. Our 500th review on TripAdvisor! “The Best of the West End and Beyond” “Just as good as the West End” ‘We went to the Shanklin Theatre 10 days ago to see ‘The Best of the West End’. What a delightful evening. It was our first visit to this beautiful Victorian theatre which is greatly enhanced by the wonderful volunteer staff that help to make your evening so enjoyable. The show itself was excellent and from a couple who are able to see many of the West End Shows, it was great to see the hits from so many top shows being performed so professionally, with excellent costumes, singing and the talented ten people certainly entertained us as they say "Right Royally." The cast is a mix of professional singers and dancers, with a varied and impressive list of credits which includes "42nd Street" in London's West End, appearances on BBC Radio 2, and ten Bollywood movies! They will entertain and impress you as their energy and talent is showcased in beautiful solos such as "I Dreamed a Dream" from "Les Mis", and fantastic ensemble numbers like "I'm Getting Married in the Morning" from "My Fair Lady".

Shanklin Theatre Our story so far
The site for Shanklin Theatre was gifted to the people of Shanklin by the Lord of the Manor, Francis Popham-White. ‘Shanklin Literary Institute’ was funded by public subscriptions and opened in 1879. The original Institute contained an entertainments hall and meeting rooms, together with the Town Hall and Mayor’s Parlour for Shanklin Urban District Council. Additional rooms including an amusements room were added in 1884. After an official order from the Town Council in 1913, the entire building became known as ‘Shanklin Town Hall’. After a serious fire in the early 1930s, the damaged part of the building was rebuilt incorporating Shanklin Theatre, to a design by architects Cooper & Corbett, the newly resurrected ‘Shanklin Theatre’ was opened in 1934. Help fund our future and continue our story The Shanklin Theatre has played a central role within the cultural life of the Isle of Wight, and never more so than today. In addition to our full and varied stage show programme, we are also home to the ‘First Act Theatre Group’, a theatre group for people with learning disabilities. We offer the use of our stage area and facilities to enable the group to rehearse shows that are then presented at the theatre throughout the year since 2011. As well as the varied and multi-national school, and educational student groups that come to our theatre each year, we also play host to the annual ‘Isle of Wight Music Dance & Drama Festival’. We are also home to Spotlight IOW Ltd, an Island-based company who have been providing top quality professional entertainment since 2001. Remembering Shanklin Theatre If the Shanklin Theatre is important to you, please consider supporting us with a gift in your will. Leaving a legacy to Shanklin Theatre is a wonderful

Con’t - way of ensuring your passion for the theatre will be remembered, enabling the theatre to inspire future audiences as you have been, as well as conserving our beautiful building. Your gift could support our restoration work as a whole, or could be directed to a specific area such as our ‘Windows Appeal Fund’. Keep theatre alive Your legacy will be greatly appreciated and valued; you can either leave a set sum or a percentage of your estate to The Shanklin Theatre and Community Trust fund to ensure that our beautiful and historic theatre is maintained. Why should I make a Will? There are a good number of reasons for doing so. Firstly, if you do not make a will, the rules of intestacy will apply, which means that when you die your assets will be divided between your relatives according to statutory rules, and therefore may go to people you do not wish to benefit. In the event that you die without relatives then your estate would go to the Crown, i.e., the Treasury’s coffers instead of, for example, to favourite charities if you had made a will. Secondly, you can appoint your own executors, who will put into effect the terms of your will and these will be people you trust implicitly. Thirdly, making a will also enables you to put in hand tax-planning measures to avoid, as far as possible, inheritance tax depleting your estate. Finally, in a will you can leave bequests of certain items or cash legacies to people who have been important to you during your lifetime. Please contact your own solicitor to discuss your requirements, but make sure the solicitor is a specialist in this area of work.
Types of Legacy A residuary gift This is the gift of all or part of the value of your estate after debts, other legacies and liabilities have been met. This has the advantage of automatically keeping up with inflation. 18 | P a g e
A monetary legacy You can also choose to leave a sum of money, also known as pecuniary gift, which you can arrange to be increased in line with inflation. A specific legacy or gift in kind This is the gift of something valuable like a property, a piece of jewellery or stocks and shares. The form of wording is the same as a pecuniary gift, except that the gift is specified instead of a cash sum. A reversionary legacy This gift has the advantage of providing for your family first and then benefiting Shanklin Theatre. So when the original beneficiary dies, the gift in your will reverts to Shanklin Theatre. Your solicitor or legal advisor will be able to provide you with wording for this form of legacy. The tax implications of making a gift in your Will The Inheritance Tax threshold (or 'nil rate band') is the amount up to which an estate will have no Inheritance Tax to pay (£325,000 in 2015-16). If the estate - including any assets held in trust and gifts made within seven years of death - is more than the threshold, Inheritance Tax will be due at 40 % on the amount over the nil rate band. Any gift in your will to Shanklin Theatre (or any other charity) avoids paying this 40% Inheritance Tax, since charities are exempt – so, for example, a gift of £1000 would cost your estate £600. Also, from 6 April 2012 people who leave 10% or more of their net estate to charity can choose to pay a reduced rate of Inheritance Tax of 36%. There is no capital gains tax payable on death, so if you leave a portfolio of shares to Shanklin Theatre then no capital gains tax would be payable on the transfer of these shares. Furthermore, it should be noted that the nil rate band is transferable to the survivor of a married or civil partnership couple, so that the potential exists for up to £650,000 to be given away by this party to non-exempt beneficiaries before Inheritance Tax becomes payable. 19 | P a g e
Con’t - For example, a Will could be made by the survivor of a Shanklin Theatre supporter under which they leave up to £650,000 (assuming no life time gifts have been made in the last seven years, and that none of the nil rate band was used on the first death) to their relatives and friends and the remainder to Shanklin Theatre without incurring any liability to inheritance tax. It is always recommended that you ask your solicitor about the best ways to reduce tax. Useful internet links: www.hmrc.gov.uk/inheritancetax www.legacy10.com Charitable Status Shanklin Theatre and Community Trust (Reg no. 1146834) has full charitable status. Legacies to charities like Shanklin Theatre and Community Trust are therefore exempt from Inheritance tax (and could help reduce your tax liability), so 100% of your money will go directly to the Fund you choose. A gift from you can reduce the amount of any tax payable out of your estate. OUR GRAND TOTAL: £110,532!!! In February, Elkie Brooks opened our spring programme of great artistes, including Tony Christie, The BBC Big Band and comedian Omid Djalili. The Manfreds, who remain leaders of the artistes’ bucket collection list with £534.19, returned once again on 10 March to gain the fifth position with £404.53. The Savoyards performed a five show run of Jekyll & Hyde The Musical, followed by five performances of the play Strictly Murder, starring Brian Capron, Jenny Funnell and Gary Turner, bringing the April total to £1273. The summer season opened in May with our own Spotlight professional company presenting the Best of the West End and Beyond; the first three shows collected more than £535. At our FOST AGM, on 24 April, we announced the bucket grand total was now over £110,532. It is not the Theatre’s policy to charge a booking fee, and this seems to be reflected in the generosity of audiences to our bucket collections.
