Chairman’s Foreword
With winter now firmly on our doorstep and with a chill in the air, a very warm welcome to this December issue of ‘Stage Write’. As always, we have some interesting stories to tell and as ever, much is going on at Shanklin Theatre. In my last foreword, I mentioned briefly about a couple of folk who had heard our story of volunteering at Shanklin Theatre and although living miles away on the mainland, had then felt moved to give us their support. In this issue you can read an article on one of them - Jo Everitt, who met our Volunteer Neil Hedges whilst both were on a coach tour of North America. Thanks to Neil’s enthusiasm for our Theatre and his volunteering role, Jo became captivated by his story and has gone on to become a Patron and firm supporter of FOST. Jo Lives in Cambridgeshire and a number of us were delighted to meet with her when she visited our Theatre back in October, for what we hope was the first of many visits. I ‘m also pleased to let you know that the Friends of Shanklin Theatre have been chosen as one of the charities to support in the Local Co-op Community Fund for

the next 12 months. Further details are given in this issue, but basically by using your current Co-op membership or signing up as a new member you can nominate The Friends as your preferred charity. This means that every time you buy Co-op own brand products and present your Co-op membership card at the till, 1% of the amount you have spent on these will be allocated to The Friends of Shanklin Theatre by the Co-op Local Community Fund. We’ll also be sharing in the monies raised from the sale of carrier bags, which as you may know are now supplied at a charge if required. Overall this could be a really valuable fund raiser for FOST in the coming year and we are extremely pleased to have been chosen, so please give this your full support if at all possible. In the last issue, I also mentioned that we would be celebrating the 10th Anniversary of saving Shanklin Theatre during 2018. Thanks to the efforts of so many, much has happened over the last 10 years and today Shanklin Theatre has become a major theatre on the national circuit. It is certainly important to mark this milestone and so we will be holding an event during the evening of 2nd October at the Theatre. Planning is already underway for this and we will be letting you have further information in due course. Meeting Jo Everitt – By Neil Hedges
I have friends who have owned a Villa in Florida since 1991, and I have been lucky enough to visit many times over the years for golfing holidays, and trips to the theme parks with them. My friends who own the villa tend to jet off to other areas of the USA to explore various regions before going down to Florida for the last couple of weeks of their holiday. They have always told me stories of their great times in LA, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas etc, and I have always wanted to visit the region. As I am no longer married and now on my own, the thought of going on my own and renting a car has never really appealed to me. It was then that I had the idea of going on an organised coach tour of the area. I found a trip that matched my areas of interest and booked with a company called Titan Travel, who even arranged to pick me up from my home address on the Island. I travelled to Heathrow on 4th July 17 looking forward to a great adventure to the western United States. On arrival at LA Airport we were collected by coach and transferred to our hotel for the night. The following day I met the other 27 people who would be my travelling companions on the tour for the next 16 days. There was a good mix of families, couples, a mother and son and as it turned out three single people on the tour, myself and two ladies. I was seated on the coach near to Jo Everitt (one of the single ladies) and naturally we talked during our trip, from there we often socialised in the evenings 4|Page
in the Restaurant and bar back at the hotels. During one of our chats over lunch at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas, Jo asked me what I did work wise. I explained that I carried out voluntary work for Shanklin Theatre, and went on to outline much of the recent history, and how it had previously been left to run down by the IOW council and was threatened with closure with the possibility of being demolished and replaced by a residential development. I went on to explain how FOST was formed and the current set up, with Volunteers undertaking the majority of the work, and how the theatre has been, and is still being restored and improved, and the great acts and shows that we now attract. Jo seemed surprisingly interested for someone who lived in Cambridgeshire and therefore had no local affinity. She asked lots of questions and seemed genuinely interested; I was worried I was boring her to death, but she assured me that I wasn’t. I later found out that her interest was due to her late mother being involved in local theatre amateur dramatics group when she was growing up, and that her and her mother had been involved in the unsuccessful attempt to keep Colchester Rep open in the 1970s. This explained the interest in my ramblings about my pride in our local Theatre and what had been achieved by a very dedicated, hardworking, group of local people. Towards the end of the holiday she handed me an envelope containing $300 (£228.00) and said that she would like to donate this to the work at the Theatre. I was of course shocked and extremely grateful and assured Jo that I
Cont’d; would make sure the Theatre got the money, and inform the chairman of FOST, David Kast, which I did upon my return to the UK. Subsequently, Jo has decided to make an ongoing annual donation to the Theatre in memory of her late mother. Two seats on the Balcony have now had plaques affixed to recognise the support of Jo and also in memory of her late mother. It just goes to show that by talking about our work at the Theatre, help and support can come from unexpected places. Neil Hedges. Replacement Foyer Roof
The roof above the foyer at the entrance to Shanklin Theatre has, like other parts of the building, come to the end of its useful life. The foyer below has been beautifully redecorated in recent times and there was risk of damaging this decor due to the ageing roof starting to leak again, despite being patched up more than once. The Trustees of Shanklin Theatre & Community Trust, whose responsibility it is to preserve the building, consequently tasked a local firm, Newton Roofing, with the substantial job of stripping the old roof and renewing the lead covering on a like-for-like basis in line with English Heritage Grade 2 Listed Building requirements. Lead is a traditional covering and, with a long lifetime, has lasted well since the 1930s when the rebuilt Theatre was opened. The old lead wasn’t wasted – it went for recycling and will be processed and used again. It’s great to see a local firm has the skills to make use of these traditional materials. CHRISTMAS SPECIAL BREAKFAST The catering team throughout the year organise a monthly Breakfast Club in the Theatre Green Room, and each December as part of our Christmas celebrations we hold a Special Breakfast between 9.45 am and 11.15 am, this year a special guest will be joining us in the Green Room. Our Special Breakfast will be held on Thursday 14th December and the Menu will be: Smoked Salmon or Grapefruit starter, followed by a Full Isle of Wight Breakfast (Bacon, Sausage, Hash Brown, Fried Bread, Mushrooms and Tomatoes) toast with marmalade and tea or coffee with free refills. All this for just ÂŁ5.00, with the proceeds from the breakfast going to the Theatre funds. Please book by no later than Monday 11th December to ensure correct purchase of food can be undertaken. Both semi-circular window frames to the Façade of the Theatre have now been fully restored and fitted. Our theatre volunteer from the maintenance team Peter Tuppen has now applied the base coat and primer ready for a new shiny gloss topcoat.

The Friends attend the Leaflet Exchange Day at Isle of Wight Pearl
The Isle of Wight is open for business during the winter — that was the message from tourism firms at an expo. Held at Isle of Wight Pearl on Friday 3rd November, the leaflet exchange was attended by around 30 businesses keen to promote the Island's winter tourism offer. Representatives from Island attractions, events and activity companies shared their leaflets with accommodation providers, for them to pass on to their guests. Charley McAllister, from the Isle of Wight Pearl marketing team, said: “The Isle of Wight benefits from tourism in the summer months and, throughout the winter months, many businesses are affected by low trade as the Isle of Wight is deemed to be closed for winter.” "We want to shout about all the businesses that are open all year round." OUR GRAND TOTAL: £120,746.76!!! Here we are approaching the end of another year, with the bucket collections through August, September and October raising over £5,239. Our collecting pots, placed strategically around the Theatre, raised £105. The excellent Best of the West End and Beyond closed their season by achieving £2,308 for August and September. The Russian State Opera performance of Tosca impressed the audience, who donated £219.87; while the Pepperpot Players presentation of the classic British farce - When the Cat’s Away - made £112. The ever-popular Savoyards’ production of the musical Nine to Five made over £538. Big Girls Don’t Cry, another favourite, did well with £193. Georgie Fame in Concert and One Night of Queen raised more than £150 each. For kids of all ages, Dick Whittington and his Cat is this year’s Spotlight panto. The volunteers will be getting in to the Christmas spirit throughout December and wearing seasonal red tops, Santa hats and flashing bow ties, so you can’t miss us when we are there with our buckets! New Internal Walkway now has its own Memorial Picture Disc
As part of the recent safety upgrades at the theatre, a newly formed walkway linking the Balcony stairway to an external safety route has been created. In the event of any emergency, this walkway can be opened to allow people to leave the building more quickly and safely should the need arise. The circular opening and brick wall shown in the image was originally an external part of the theatre building. As a memorial to all the tradesmen that constructed the then ‘Shanklin Institute’ back in 1878, it was decided that a pictorial dedication would be located on that particular part of the original building. Commissioned by graphic designers ‘Indigo Graphics Ltd’ under the direction of Theatre MD Vic Farrow & FOST VC Michael Beston, the picture disc was affixed by the theatre’s maintenance team. The Theatre’s History. Shanklin Theatre was formerly known as The Institute and opened in 1879. In 1884 new rooms were added: the Reading Room and Amusement Room. Visitors were charged 1d to use the Reading Room and this was housed in the lower section of the building to the right of the main front facade. The Amusement Room had two billiard tables and was managed by the Shanklin Chess Club. In 1913 the Council ordered that the words Institute and Reading Room be erased from the building and it then became The Town Hall. 15 | P a g e
Cont’d. In 1925 a serious fire occurred, which seriously damaged the Institute, but not the Town Hall. In 1929, Shanklin Urban District Council recommended spending £17,000 on structural improvements, but this was amended to £14,000 because Sandown Council objected in view of the proposed amalgamation of both local authorities in 1933.

In August 1932, approval to proceed with reconstruction was given and by the beginning of October work was well advanced on the demolition of part of the old Town Hall. Building commenced in 1933 and on 21st March 1934 the New Town Hall and Theatre opened. It continued to be used as the Town Hall when South Wight Borough Council was created in 1974, but ceased to be an active Town Hall from the formation of Isle of Wight Council as a Unitary Authority in 1995. During World War Two the Theatre was used for dances and many other kinds of entertainment. The Theatre seated more than 700 people but when it was used for dancing, the staff would push all the seats to the side or under the stage to leave a large expanse of dance floor. In the basement of the Theatre is the lower town hall room, this was used for meetings and as a bar until about 2005. The Bar has now been re-installed and is currently open an hour before shows and during the interval. Near the Bar 16 | P a g e
Cont’d; is the old Wartime Control Room which is strengthened by large steel girders to safeguard users in case of bombing. These rooms continued to be used by the Civil Defence during the early part of the Cold War with the Eastern Block. Also on this floor, but only accessible from outside, was the Town Mortuary, more recently used as an Internet Radio Station. After the war the Theatre came into its own with the Barry O'Brien Company putting on repertory plays every week of the summer season, and on Sundays there would be concerts shared with Sandown Pavilion, to include many famous names of the era. One cast would perform at Sandown Pavilion during the first half, while the other would be at Shanklin Theatre. They would change over during the interval, being shuttled by taxi between the two theatres. In the winter the local drama groups, such as The Unity Players or The Palmerston Players, would hire the theatre to stage their own productions. From the 1970s Shanklin Theatre was the base for the Island Savoyards, a local amateur group performing Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas and other Musicals. The group still performs at the Theatre on a regular basis. Tickets in those days were sold from the former Box Office, now used as a sweet kiosk, in the front foyer. In 1992 a new Box Office was created and this is sited to the right hand side of the main front entrance a little further up Steephill Road, in what was the former Reading Room. Congratulations to Jayne & James of Spotlight Ltd for their new addition to the Spotlight team! Baby Freddie Jax Derbyshire arrived on 14th November at 22.37, weighing 7lb 14oz! In true theatrical style – ‘the show must go on’ - Jayne will once again be producing this year’s professional pantomime, Dick Whittington and his Cat. James will be taking the title role in his usual exuberant style, along with the familiar favourite professional principals, dancers, juniors and live band in the Spotlight Company.
Dick Whittington and his Cat. Shanklin Theatre’s 2017/18 Pantomime From the award winning team that brought you last year’s record breaking ‘Cinderella’, comes the other famous rags to riches pantomime, Dick Whittington and his Cat. It is the story of the boy who came to London to seek his fortune and ended up being framed for a crime he didn’t commit, sailing across the world, becoming shipwrecked and battling an evil giant rat for control of the city. We at Spotlight make sure that our pantomimes truly have something for everyone in the family and Dick Whittington, although perhaps not one of the best-known stories is a perfect pantomime. The show takes you from bustling London Markets, to exotic desert islands with a hero you’ll love, a villain you can really boo and of course an all singing all dancing cat – the children will love her. Our show will be filled with great songs to tap your feet to, hilarious comedy and slapstick, action, adventure, romance, special effects and of course plenty of audience participation. A letter from Cilla
Our Welfare Co-ordinator, Cilla Morris will celebrate her 92nd birthday in January 2018, Cilla is our most senior lady volunteer, and is also our group representative for volunteer support alongside Phil Kelly. Cilla goes onto write: ‘After 32 fabulous shows the cast of the ‘Best of the West End’ have hung out their dancing shoes for another year. They will be back. The show gets better and better each year. Such a variety of songs, dances and a little humour, something for everyone’s taste and all performed with such energy. The comments after the show from the audience is so good - ‘better than the West End’ – ‘where are they going next?’ - ‘have you a video for sale?’ I wish the cast could hear them. It’s for shows like this and all the others Vic books, that the theatre was saved. How lucky for them all to perform in such a lovely old theatre everyone likes coming back, many times. If you did not manage to see the show you really missed a wonderful evening. We have so many shows here from top stars of stage and TV to those of local groups and dancing schools.
