"Ittooka wise manto dream big, to dream great, when allaroundwashate." SA usedthese wordstokick off our annual MartinLuther King, Jr. sharingassemblyon Friday, January 12. Nurseryschoolstudentsmarched into the MeetingRoom holdingupsmall inspirationalsigns of friendship.
The firstactwas SAreciting In Memory, apoem by Erica Northrop. Then SB recited thepoem Facing the Challenge by MartinLutherKing, Jr. Next, PKB reciteda poem about Dr. l{ing, followed bythe firstgraderswho tookthe stage andsang What Can One Little Person Do, invitingeveryone elseto singalong.
Then, really gettingintothespirit, fourth graders recitedpartsof MLl{'s / Have a Dream speech. Finallythe UpperSchoolchorussang threesongs: Ulwthula (aSouth African peace song), Bashana Habanah, a Hebrewsong aboutlooking forwardto peace inthe new year, and You Will be Found, asongwrittenbyFCSgraduateBenj Pasek for the Broadwayplay Dear Evan Hansen. Some ofthe grown-upsin theaudience weremoved to tears!
On Monday, January 15, theLower School offered a DayofServicein honor of Dr. King. Manyofuscame to schooltoparticipate. Some of uscreated cleaningkits for a homelessshelter called "Families Forward Philadelphia" whileothersmadecolorful, soft, no-sew fleecepillows. It feltgoodto cometogether tohelp others.

On Friday, December 15, thefifth gradeshared their ancient civilization projectsin the meetingroomwith theirfamiliesandthe entire school. Eachpersonin fifth grade had pairedupwitha fellowclassmate to research an AncientCivilization. Theyused booksfromthelibraryand websitesto gather information. The visionthat eachpairhadwas tobecome expertsinanAncientCivilization andwrite a bookaboutitfor newcomersto read in thelibrary.
Inmathclass, welearnedmath used bysome peopleinancienttimes, and madelittle squaretilepatternsout ofbeans. Inhumanities, we made jewelryout ofbeadsandstonesfrom our civilizations andwemade paperin artclass,representingpapyrus.Wedisplayedallofthese atourAncient Civilizations Festival.
Afterthe festivalinthe MeetingRoom, the fifthgradersandtheir parentswent upstairs to have afeastofancientcivilization foods! Therewas hummus, chile, Mayanhot cocoa, stuffed grapeleaves, buns, biscuits, fortune cookiesandmuch, muchmore.
Nowour booksarein thelibraryfor anyonewhowantsto checkthem out and for nextyear's fifthgraders! We really learneda lot andwe hope othersdo too from ourbooks.

On Friday, January 19, the Upper School's "Shakespearein Performance"classperformed itsown wonderful version of The Tempest for allofthe Lower Schoolstudents. The actorsusedmostlytheir imaginationsandsome carefully chosensoundeffects. Lower Schoolchildren thoroughlyenjoyed the show!

You may have known these teachersasMr.Dubb,Ms.Will,and Ms. B.,but now you can call them Teacher Joseph,Teacher Deb and Teacher Tiffany! We have noticed that kidshave been talking about thischange and we are here to tell you what happened and why.
?By taking Teacher Deb asmy name at FCS,I feel that I am not putting myself above other membersof the community.Even though Teacher isatype of title,it is based on my work,not my gender or my statusin society,?said Teacher Deb (formerly known asMs.Will).
Teacher Deb told usthat in the past Quakersdidn't use titlessuch asMiss,Ms., Mrs.and Mr. but referred to people by their first and/or last name.Thisisbecause of the Quaker testimony of equality.When you use Missor Mrs.those titlesindicate awoman?s marital status,but Mr.doesn't,which isunfair.Why should people know awoman's marital statusand not aman?s?
We asked Ms. McBee why she didn't switch her name thisyear.?I decided not to switch my name to Teacher Alice thisyear because I have astudent named Alice and I didn't want it to get confusing,?she said. ?I would consider changing my name to Teacher Alice in the future,but I would have to discuss it with my 4th grade teaching partner (Ms. Tedesco) first.?She said she would want them to both agree on what they should be called.

Visiting theCharleston Market

Hush puppies,fried chicken,lemonade,chocolate and iced tea! These are some of the foodsthat were at 3B?sCharleston Market which took place before winter break. 3Bheld thisfestival to let usknow what it felt like to explore one of South Carolina?slargest and noisiest markets.
When we arrived at the doorway of 3B,we saw the desksrearranged into asemi-circle to make the classroom have the mood of the real Charleston Market. The merchantshad tie-dyed shirtson.
We received three dollarsto spend on anything at the market.Everything at the market cost one dollar.There were so many great optionsto spend your money on,it washard to choose. We attempted to bargain with the merchants,but only some were open to it. We really enjoyed the amazing fried chicken!
From the looksof it,everyone enjoyed the 3BCharleston Market!
