DearFriends,

CommencementforthewonderfulClassof2008washeldonaveryhot SaturdaymorninginJune.Itwassohot thatthegraduatingclass,whichnormally gathersontheCampusGreenbefore assemblingfortheprocession,preferred tolingeronthefirstflooroftheWood Buildingwheretheairconditioningprovidedrelief.Afewbraveseniorsventured intomyofficeannouncingthattheyhad neverbeeninthe“innersanctum.”They quicklyallowedthatthatwasprobablya goodthingandwentontoadmirethe secretstaircaseandmyviewofthe GraduationTerrace.

Afewminuteslatertheentire classwashappilyproceedingthroughthe rosechainamidstaseaofenthusiastic parents,grandparents,friends,faculty, andtrustees.Alittleoveranhourlater, afteroursimpleandtraditionalceremony,theSchoolofficiallylettheseniorsgo withplentyofencouragementfortheir newadventuresandgenuinewishesfor manyhappyreturnstotheir almamater Wetrusttheywilljoingenerationsof Friends’Centralgraduatesinhavinga positiveimpactonhumanendeavor.

“Wheredowecomefrom?”

Everyspring,followingtheirreturn fromtheMarchbreak,theFriends’ Centralfourthgradehasaunitonimmigration,primarilyfocusingonthewave ofimmigrantsthatcametotheUnited Statesbetween1880and1910.Inthe contextofthesestudies,theylearnabout thehistoryandsymbolismoftheStatue ofLiberty,andinmid-Maytwosections traveltoEllisIslandforthedaytobring theirstudiestolife.

HarlemRenaissance

Foryears,kindergarten

Johns’classroomhashousedaboatlarge enoughtofittheentireclass.Theboat originallyservedasamodelofEarnest Shackelton’sship“TheEndurance”when theFallThematicProjectwas“Journeys.” Eachyearsincethen,ithasevolvedto takeonanewidentitytofitthecurriculum.Theboathastakenkindergarteners toIndia,theDominicanRepublic,an Amazonrainforest,andItalyintheir imaginations.

Thisspring,asthekindergartenersin KCdoveintothehistoryoftheHarlem Renaissance,theboatbecametheAtrain andwhirledthemintotheworldof Harleminthe1920s.Michellepartnered herstudentswithfifthgradersfrom ElkinsParkMiddleSchoolwhowerealso studyingtheHarlemRenaissance,recreatedtheSylvia’sRibsrestaurantwithcandlesonthetableandjazzplayinginthe background,and,asaculminationto theirstudies,putonaplayinShallcross Hallentitled BeautifulHarlem forthe UpperSchool.Theperformanceincluded hitssuchasFatsWaller’ssong“YourFeets TooBig,”aswellasabeautifulrecitation ofLangstonHughespoem“TheNegro SpeaksofRivers.”

InkeepingwiththeLowerSchool’s traditionforthematicteaching,the fourthgraders’unitonimmigrationand theStatueofLibertyincorporatesthe studyofpoetry.ThisyearinChris Ramsey’sclass,inspiredbythefamous poem“TheNewColossus”byEmma Lazarus,fourthgradestudentswrote theirowntributestoLadyLibertyand thepromiseofanewland.Chrisreports thatwhenthechildrenspottedtheStatue ofLibertyontheirwaytoEllisIsland, they“lookedasthoughtheywereseeing anold,belovedfriend,”asentiment reflectedintheirpoetry.

Thebravesixthgraders inPadraig Barry’smathclass,undauntedbytheharrowingeconomicclimate,tookonaprojectinwhichtheyinvested10,000imaginarydollarsinfivestocksoftheirchoosing.InkeepingwithFriends’Centralphilosophy,thestockmarketprojectencouragesindependentlearningandthinking, allowingstudentstopursuetheirown interestsandmaketheirowndiscoveries. Eachweekforsixweeks,thesixthgraders

Friends’CentralmadeatriptoJapan, accompaniedbyMiddleSchoolart teacherLeslieMarieGrace,science teacherDyannConnor,fourparentchaperones,andonesibling.LeslieMarietraveledtoJapanlastsummerwithagrant fromtheJapanFulbrightMemorialFund. Aspartofthatgrant,sheagreedtodo lessonplansthatwouldincorporatewhat shelearnedinhertravels.Shehascertainlyliveduptothatagreementthisyear, teachingcountlesscreative,JapaneseinspiredprojectstoherMiddleSchool classes.Leslie’sstudentsmadeanimestyle potraits,emakiscrolls,andfakesushi rollsthatweredisplayedinlocalrestaurants.

Oneofhermostmeaningfulprojects grewoutofthisyear’scelebrationofthe

InternationalDayofPeaceonSeptember 21st.Inhonoroftheday,LeslieMarie hadstudentsinallgradesfoldpaper cranestobedeliveredtotheSadako SasakimonumentinHiroshimaPeace MemorialPark.WhentheFriends’ CentralgroupdepartedonMarch20th, theycarriedwiththemaboxcontaining the1,000papercranes.

OnceinJapan,thegroupoftwelve traveledtoTokyo,Kyoto,Osako,and Hiroshima.Thestudentsenjoyedriding thebullettrain,feedingdeerinNaro Park,andvisitingStudioGhibliofthe filmSpiritedAway.Allagreed,however, thatthemostmovingmomentoftheir tripwasonthelastday,whentheydeliveredthe1,000papercranestheymadeto theHiroshimaSadakoSasakiMonument asasymbolofFriends’CentralSchool’s wishforuniversalpeace.Thegroupstood inacircleandhelpedputallthecranes ononeloopofstring,whichLeslieMarie says“becameitsownceremony.”The Friends’CentralstudentsweresurroundedbyagroupofJapanesetouristswho wereevidentlyunusedtoseeingstudents fromtheUnitedStatesdelivercranesby hand.LeslieMariesays,“thatoneday, everythingcametogether—itmadeit seemlikepeacecouldbedoneandshould bedone.”

gatheredinthecomputerlabtocarefully monitorthemarketandfollowtherises andfallsoftheirinvestments.Attheend oftheirproject,thestudentswroteupa portfolioontheirstocks,whichincluded colorfulgraphsaswellasdetailed researchaboutthecompaniestheychose toinvestin.Theyalsohadtoexplainwhy theychosetobuysharesineachoftheir companies.Theirreasonsrangedfrom theemotional“Ilovetheproduct”tothe practical“thestockisinexpensivesoIwas abletobuylotsofshares”tothesimplest explanation:“mydadtoldmeto.”Padraig gavetheprojectacompetitiveelementby awardingafirstplaceandsecondplaceto hisstudents.Firstplace,awardedthestu-

dentwhomadethemostmoneyduring theproject,wenttoLindsaySaligman, whomade$2,527.Padraiggavesecond placetothestudentwholostthemost money:TaylorAllen,wholost$935. Lessonlearned?Whenthemoneyis imaginary,everybodywins!

OnThursdayevening,deMenocal gavealectureentitled“Understandingthe GlobalWarmingForecast:OurPastand FutureClimate”toalargeaudienceof FCSstudents,parents,faculty,andmembersofthecommunityinShallcrossHall. Thelecturesummarizedwhatisknown aboutclimatechangeoverthepast

EachyearattheendofApril, when senioritisreachesitspeak,Friends’ Centralreleasesitsgraduatingclassinto thewiderworldtopursueindividual projectsthattheyhaveenvisionedand planned.Theprojectsthisyearrepresentedthediverseinterestsandtalentsofthe seniorclass,fromboatbuildingtonovel writing.GraceTarves’08tookthesenior projectasanopportunitytoexploreher passionforactingandsingingandtotest thewatersofdirecting.

Gracehadknownthatshewantedto putonaproductionofthesongcycle “Edges”sincethefirsttimesheheardit. “Edges”consistsofthirteensongsthat centeraroundthelivesofyoungpeople tryingtofindtheirtrueidentities.The show,whichjustfinishedaruninAlbany andwillruninNewYorkthisfall,was writtenbyBenjPasek’03,brotherof Grace’sfriendandclassmateMikey Pasek’08.TheSeniorProjectperiodprovidedGracewiththeperfectchanceto stagetheshowfortheFCScommunity.

400,000yearsandofferedcompellingevidencethatthecurrentwarmingtrendis unprecedented.Anattentiveand informedaudienceconcludedthetalk withquestionsaboutdeMenocal’s researchandwhatcanbedonetoaddress theproblemofglobalwarming.

deMenocal’svisitcontinuedon Friday,April11th,whenhevisitedscience classroomsthroughoutthedayandhelda discussionoverlunchwithasmaller groupofFriends’Centralstudents.Inthe classrooms,manyofthequestionsthe studentsaskedreflectedtheirapprehensionsaboutourabilitytochangethe courseofglobalwarming.deMenocal encouragedthemtopursueanactiverole infindingsolutionstoenvironmental problemsandexpressedconfidencethat theworldcanandwillrespondtothis crisis.Inthesummer,acoregroupof about25studentswilltraveltoNewYork tovisitdeMenocal’slab(attheLamontDohertyEarthObservatory)andthe AmericanMuseumofNaturalHistory.

Nextyear’sDistinguishedScientist willbeJaredDiamond,authorof Guns, Germs,andSteel.

Butherworkbeganlongbeforetheend ofApril.Withthehelpofherparents, Gracefundraisedthroughoutthespring attheShakespeareshowcases,Comedy SportzNight,andspringconcertstopay forthelicensingfeestotheshow.Shealso auditionedtalentfromoutsidethegreater Philadelphiaarea.Grace,whohasbeen actingoutsidetheSchoolformostofher life,sawthisprojectasafittingwayto celebratetheendofherhighschool career.

Gracealsosaysthatherseniorprojectallowedhertogrowasapersonasshe facedunanticipatedchallenges.“Iam prettyquietandintroverted,”shesays.“I hadtoopenupandbeapresenceinthe room….Ialwayshadthisfantasythat directingwaseasy.ButIdidn’trealize howmuchbeinganactorwouldhelpme asadirector.”Hershowwasagreatsuccessandraisedaround$200forthecharityBroadwayCares-EquityFightsAIDS.

TheGreening ofFriends’Central

Thisyear,Friends’Central tookonthe challengetogogreenwithgusto.Allthree divisionsincreasedtheireffortstoreduce theSchool’simpactontheenvironment. Webegantomonitor,andtakestepsto reduce,ourgas,paper,andelectricityuse. Asapartoftheseefforts,aprogramwas beguntoreplacelightbulbswithmore energyefficientmodelsandtheparent newsletterisnowsenthomeelectronically.TheSchoolhasalsocontinuedits long-standingpracticeofmaintainingthe sportsfieldsusingonlynaturalfertilizers, andstudentsthisyearhavebeentending tothegreenroofthatwasrecentlyadded outsideRoom25oftheWoodBuilding.

TheLowerSchoolbeganrecycling yogurtcontainersforTerra,anorganizationthatplantsaseedlingtreeinevery containeritreceives.ScienceteacherMr.

GrovealsoinstalledasolarpanelonBea’s Housetomodelforthechildrenawayto reducedependencyonconventional “dirty”energy.

IntheMiddleSchool,environmental conscientiousnesswasatthecenterofthe curriculum,serviceprojects,andaction, muchofitinitiatedbythestudents. StudentsinvolvedinServiceThroughArt producedapuppetshowaboutwaysto preservetheenvironment.Eachpuppet wasmadeofentirelyfoundmaterials suchasplasticbottles,string,andold piecesoffabric.MiddleSchoolstudents alsoplantedraingardenstohelpabsorb run-off,andcontinuedtheirhardwork cleaninguplocalstreamsandparks.

ThisyeartheUpperSchoolsawthe creationofthestudentrun EnvironmentalAwarenessClub,dedicated toincreasingawarenessinthestudent body.Collaborationbetweenstudentsin thisclubandtheAdministrationledtoa massiverecyclinginitiativeontheCity AvenueCampus,includingparticipation intheTerraprogram,thepurchaseand saleofreusablebagstohelpraisemoney forfutureenergysavingprojects,andthe startofaconversationaboutwasteinthe cafeteria.

Inthespring,theSchoolwassurprisedandpleasedtolearnthatithad beenawardedthefirstannual“GoFor TheGreenAward”bytheLowerMerion TownshipEnvironmentalAdvisory Council.TheawardrecognizedFriends’ Central’slongstandingcommitmentto raisingtheenvironmentalconsciousness ofallitsstudents,acommitmentthatwill continuewithgreatenthusiasmnextyear!

Here’swhatyouwillhave:Gasbills, rentbills,taxbillsandphonebills.Dirty dishesanddirtydiapersandtheagonizingcacaphonyofChuckE.Cheese.While yourParisiancounterpartswhileaway endlesshoursdiscussingmodesofalienationinsidewalkcafesyouwillbedowningaburritofromTacoBellinyourcubicleoveralaptop.WhileyourSpanishand Italiancounterpartsaretakingtheirdaily siestas,youwillstillbeattheoffice,missingyourkidslittleleaguegame,inthe

hopesofgettingthatbigpromotion.But whileyou’rethinkingofthatbigpromotion,yourbossisthinkingofdownsizing youandshippingyourjobtooffto Bombay.

NowIknowwhatyou’rethinking. You’rethinking,“Whatkindofagraduationpeptalkisthis?”Welldon’tworry. I’mnotheretotalkaboutdoomand gloom.I’mheretoscaretheheckoutof yousothatyouwillnotwastethegreat opportunitiesthatlieontheroadahead. So,torepeatmyquestion,whatdoes thatroadlooklike?Perhapsnotwhatyou think.Inthebook AWholeNewMind, whichincidentallythefacultywillbe readingthissummer,DanielPinkargues thatweareatthedawnofabrandnew

ageinAmerica,whichhecalls‘The ConceptualAge.’Ourcurrentage,often called‘TheInformationAge,’...isanage ofleftbrainthinkingdominatedbylinear,deductivereasoning.Thekindofreasoningyouneed,forexample,todowell inmathclassorontheSATtest. FCSgavemeconfidence.Thereweregreat demandsonusbecauseofthesizeofour classes.Therewereonly44kidsinthe Classof’68.Whenwemadeourpointsin class,wecouldn’tfakeit.Ourpaperswere heavilyscrutinized.Butwhenitcameto gettingusreadyfortherestofourlives, ourteachers/mentorsgaveusthetools andencouragementtoventureintothe realworld.

Whatadvicewouldyougivetothenew Friends’Centralseniorclass?(classof’09) Everything’sgoingtobeallright.

Whatwouldyourclassmatesbemost surpisedtolearnaboutyounow? IactuallyendedupdoingwhatIsetout todo.EvenbeforegoingtoFCS,Iwanted toworkinthemedia-beontelevision.I gotmystartwiththeFCSSeniorProject asaDeskAssistantatKYWNewsradio. Fromthere,IfinishedcollegeandreportedforKYW-TVthroughthe70’s.Aftera fewveryinterestingdetoursalongthe way,andamovetotheLeftCoast,Ifind myselfbackinthemedia.And,withone greatmarriagelastingmorethan30years andtwogreatdaughters-Icouldn’tbe happier.

Inthefallof1958,Friends’Centralfootballwasundefeated.TheSchooldoesn’t playfootballanymore,butduringthisyear’sReunion,themembersofthatteam cametogetherforacelebratoryhuddle.PeterWoerner’60wasnotableto attend,butthememoryhesentinillustratedtheiremotionalconnectiontoeach otherandtheirglorious,undefeatedseason.

UnfortunatelyIwon’tbeabletocometotheReunionWeekend.I’ve beenthinkingalotaboutitandhavewrittenaboutamemoryIhaveof thattime.

Sometimeinthewinterof1958IwasinthegymatFriends’ Central.MyfatherhaddiedinMay1957whenIwas15.Ihadplayed footballthepreviousfallbuttheemotionaldevastationofmyfather’s deathtookmyconfidenceawayandpreventedmefromplayingtomy ability.

Itisamazingtomethat50yearslaterIrememberthisasifitwereyesterday.Hiswordsandgesturesmadethedifferencefor meandIstillaminwonderthathewasabletogetthroughtome.ThenextfallhelefttobetheHeadmasterattheCollegiate SchoolinNewYorkCity.HecamedowntoBrynAthanforthefootballgame.Itmeantmoretometoseehimthanthe4touchdownsIscored.WheneverI’veseenayoungkidgoingthroughhardtimesIalwaysrememberwhatCarldidformeandtryto passonthatsameinspirationthatheinstilledinme.

Whenlongtimedirectorofart,Hobson L.Pittmaninauguratedthefirstofa seriesofexhibitionsheldattheSchool knownasthePhiladelphiaAnnual ExhibitionofPaintingsin1931,Friends’ Centralstudentssuddenlyhadtheworks ofrecognizedPhiladelphiaartistsintheir midst.

Anaccomplishedartisthimself, Pittmansoughttobringhispeersto exhibitattheSchoolwiththeaimof exposingstudentstoawidevarietyof styleandsubjectmatterinpainting. Withtheaidofasmallcommittee, Pittmanselectedapaintingfromeach annualexhibitiontobecomepartofthe School’spermanentartcollection. Variousorganizationsconnectedwiththe Schoolandinterestedandgenerousindividualssteppedforwardtopurchasethe paintingsandtoday,thecollectioncontainsmorethan150worksbyarangeof artists.
