MADAME GOWENTOLCOTT "If you don't know by now, I'm not going to tell you!! I" Pearls of wisdom such as these are hard to come by, but they spew regularly from the mouth of Madame GowenTolcott. Although she may have threatened to "Keel" you as a freshman, if you can make it past French II, chances are, you've earned her eternal respect. Madame, we were sorry to see you go in the second half of our senior year. We have missed your great sense of humor, your interest in us, your genuine concern, and especially your "connotations" ... of whatever nature they may be. Thank you for everything. JOHN PAYTON Late one Thesday evening I was walking through the gym after a game. From around the corner came "Hi" and a warm smile that is always there to greet you. It was John Payton. For all of the nights like this and the encouraging remarks, for his kindhearted wisecracks, for his total devotion to the school, and because he embodies the spirit of Friends' Central, we, the class of 1989, thank John Payton for all of the extra time he set aside for us.

David M. Felsen
It is not easy filling the shoes of someone who has meant so much to the school as Dr. Thomas A. Wood. However, last year, a search committee undertook this challenging task. They chose to place that burden on the shoulders of Mr. David M. Felsen. Mr. Felsen came to Friends' Central after 22 years at Germantown Friends School where he most recently served as Principal of the Upper School and Dean of Faculty. Like Dr. Wood, Mr. Felsen was a
graduate of Haverford College. He is adding much more to the school than simply filling a position. He has brought with him his Quaker values, a sense of community, and his teaching skills. The Friends' Central family is happy to welcome its newest member. We wish him luck in his new position and are sure that he will more than adequately fill the shoes that were left for him.

When he finally lifted an ink smudged fist While he typed the last word on the very last sheet. He flipped through to check that all were complete And blanched as he felt his heart skip a beat When he came 'cross an essay that he'd somehow missed. It was half passed eleven by the clock in the hall When he signed the last form in a trembling sprawl, Stuffed the last envelope, licked the last stamp, Slipped on his jacket and turned off the lamp And stepped into a night that was both cold and damp, Praying to God that his car wouldn't stall.
There were twenty six minutes before the new day When Max jumped in his Ford, hit the gas, sped away. Breaking the speed limits, risking a fine, For his ass, he well knew, was on the line. So at every red light one could hear a faint whine as he grew more despondent with every delay. The clock on the dashboard read eleven fifty two When he pulled up to 30th street and hopped out with glee, Knowing he'd made it by the skin of his teeth. He walked to a window, slipped his letters beneath, And got ready to accept his victory wreath, But the 11 o'clock deadline he didn't forsee. "I'm sorry my boy, but you simply aren't done. If you just hand them in, they'll be post marked Jan 1. We can mark them today, and do so with ease, If you wish to Express Mail each one of these. That would then be $61.25, please." And Max shelled it out, and left at a run.
