Mr. McCollum has always been an integral part of the Friends' Central experience. He takes each class under his wing and guides it through the senior year. With his demanding English classes and direction of the Senior Project Program, he prepares us for the transition to college and to life. Mr. McCollum is not only there for those who seek his assistance, but he makes a conscious effort to help our high school days run smoothly. He genuinely cares about the emotional and academic future of his students and we are lucky to have him. For all this, we'd just like to say "Thanks!"

When Friends' Central hired Mr. Nicolai, we got more than just a teacher; we added to our community an advisor, a friend, and a connection to the whole world and its happenings. Mr. Nicolai has brought invaluable and innovative new programs to the school, and has sparked a new enthusiasm for political and social awareness among the student body. He has helped push our class to realize its goals through such projects as Junior Privilege and the new Student Council constitution. We consider it a pleasure to have known him. We can never thank him enough.

A NEW FACE IN TOWN
There is a good feeling in the school community. The arrival of our new principal, Mr. Jon Harris, has brought a sense of vitality and caring to Friends' Central. He has developed friendships with both students and faculty and seems happy with his new job.
After Mr. Harris graduated from Harvard University in 1976, he served as a platoon commander in the Marine Corps. In 1979, he moved to Newport, Rhode Island, to teach English at a co-ed college preparatory school, where he eventually became Dean of Students.
His first impressions of FCS are good. He notices strong differences between the traditional boarding school atmosphere, and the liberal environment found at FCS that provides "a great wealth of opportunities." He sees the faculty as "young, professional and very caring," and the student body as 'talented and conscientious." What impresses him most is the openness between faculty and students. He believes that Friends' Central is an honest and trusting environment which gives students a diversified understanding of life as well as academics. He praises the current curriculum, the mini-courses, and senior projects, and he plans to implement a variety of similar programs.
Student reactions vary from he's a good man to "what a cute smile." The general consensus is that he is a welcome addition to Friends' Central. The Senior class is very upset that we shall only experience one year with his charm, knowledge, and devotion. We wish Mr. Harris a very happy future at FCS.

The Counselor
I am going to see the conselor, she will help, I think She helps everyone because in High School we all must go through this, we make a list, I have a reach, a sure thing, and a few maybes, She explains, the art of small talk, making a good first impression, the importance of compatibility, and ugh! what to wear
Also, you must be happy with your choice or you will have a miserable time, After all, One night can seem like 4 years when you're looking for a prom date - Laura Mann '86

F.C.S. DIPLOMATS
Three times this year FCS students donned coats and ties or skirts and entered the arena of world politics . Model United Nations were held at Harvard University , the University of Pennsylvania, and Georgetown University, and a total of three awards were amassed by our school's participants. Friends' Central's delegations, which were expanded to include freshmen and sophomores after the first U . N., represented Uganda , the United States, and Yugoslavia, among other varied and exotic nations. The veterans returned to school with stories for all, and it has added a truly international flavor to the community .
CELEBRATING
On February 13, athletic members of the faculty had an opportunity to wow their students with feats of incredible magnitude That night almost a dozen men and women joined together in a basketball team that defeated the 98 FM WCAU disc jockeys 74-53 in a game whose proceeds went to charity. The Middle School Service Committee raised $571 for juvenile diabetes and for Mexican earthquake victims In the game , Mr. Beach , Mr. Shaffer, and Mr. Mersky were especially impressive , with each scoring in double digits. We out-shot the Hot Shots and had a good time at it!
A NEW "ADDITION"
She added a touch of class to everything she touched, including Student Council, the Prom, and her own courses. Now, after three years at Friends' Central, math teacher Mrs Haimm is ready to embark on a new career : motherhood . This well-respected and much-loved educator formed special bonds with her students, mak· ing her departure even more difficult for those who know her. With typical humor and dedication, Mrs. Haimm weathered two full trimesters of school, leaving only ten days before her baby was due to make its appearance . She did not leave alone, however, but with the best wishes and fondest thoughts from the Friends' Central family.
FOOTBALL FUMBLES AT F.C.S.
This year, Friends' Central survived a football-less fall season The program was deflated after a lack of interest and participation crippled the team for the last several years. The final decision was made by Mr. Bradburd, but with much regret Fotoball players were added to other fall sports programs, which appeared to make a very positive difference Is it a coincidence that this year we won the Friends League Championships in soccer?
BCHOOL EVENTS
Mrs . Horikawa has been helping the Friends' Central community for years Whenever students walk into the library worried about research papers or life's everyday problems, she is there always ready to help with a smile . Always having videos ready for any presentation, having library books neatly organized on shelves and even getting out notices on late due books there must be someone behind all this work . And it is Mrs. Horikawa, a calm and constant support for all of us We really want to thank you .
OH WHAT A LOVELY PLAY!
Theater-goers at Friends' Central were delighted this winter by a student production of Oh , What a Lovely War , the satirical and creative conglomeration of skits and songs from World War I. Music ranged from the beautiful and melancholy to the brassy songs of soldiers going off to battle. The dancing was polished and creatively choreographed, with army routines interspersed between numbers. Each skit illustrated in some way the overall stupidity and evil of war. Twenty-four student performers and countless behind -the-scenes workers spent an entire trimester on the production, and the result was two nights of outstanding entertainment!
A TRIBUTE TO ANNE FRANK
It was not a cheerful performance, but The Diary of Anne Frank certainly offered food for thought to the many viewers who watched it on November 15. Starring Ellen Cohen in the title role, with Josh Broker as her wise , patient father, the play showed excerpts from the lives of eight people who lived in an attic for two years in Amsterdam during World War II. They were forced into hiding out of fear of the Nazis. The portrayal was excellent; the small group of thespians evoked laughter and many tears from the enthusiastic audience. All left with an appreciation for the courage and optimism of this remarkable girl, Anne Frank
"THE COLONEL"
In 1976 the captain of the tennis team called their coach "the Colonel" and the name stuck Mr. Yarnall came to the school in 1972 where he has been the Business Manager (except for a two-year " retirement" in 1981-83) ever since. We wish the Colonel well ; he will be missed by all of us.

THE GOOD OL• DAYS •••
What do you mean "The Good 01' Days?" This stuff isn't from the past! Well , we thought about it and decided to dedicate this page to celebrating the present for the future . You see , this book isn't just about the '85-'86 school year, but rather something that you will look at many times in the future as a time reference . More than anything it ends up being a time capsule and historical book. So enjoy!

Love,
For Yesterday is but a Dream, ..illliilfilt And Tomorrow is only a Vision, But Today well lived makes Every Yesterday a Dream of Happiness, And every Tomorrow a Vision of Hope. Look well, therefore, to this Day! -Unknown
Your children are not your children
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself
They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you , yet they be· long not to you
You may give them your love but not your thoughts
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you .
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness ;
For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable
