FRIENDS' CENTRAL 1981

Clinton N. Ely

Every day in the classroom, Clinton Ely shows how he has won a reputation for excellence in teaching. He teaches with a vitality and energy that is infectious, and many, many students have come away from one of his classes bubbling with fresh ideas. At the core of his style is the free-flowing class discussion, over which he keeps a rein that is neither too tight nor too slack. He makes students laugh at him as well as at themselves , and perhaps the greatest compliment that can be paid is that he talks with students instead of at them. This year he somehow handled six classes, including all the senior English classes, and he probably has touched the life of every Friends' Central student in one way or another. Thankyou, Mr. Ely, for the inspiration and good times you've given us, not to mention the "sixty a day keeps the flunker away."

Secondary Woodstock

With guitars ringing in my and beers being passed from brother to sister what is more important than peacefulness And with the wise old men yelling about a revolution again does youth really understand injustice,

For as the free stand protesting in mud others' blood is drifting on foreign waters but the hells of Congress remain unashamed And the rebel vagabonds are roaming the land but is there really a thecry to understand or is insanity just a part of the game.

With the draft in the minds of the competent and able capable of lighting lor a country of freedom I wonder, is freedom with guns freedom at all And with the promising days of years yet to come is there anything that can be said or done to change the course of the democracy's fall

With the incoherent wisdom of the heads of state rest the fate of individuals, controlled by the pecple lor the pecple or possible, did God himself create to destroy With the mysteries of this unknown universe which lay so vast are future minutes destined to be our last or does anyone care if the earth once again becomes void, Does anyone really care?

Knowing Her

Her aura protects me, as agression melts into muffling, warm feathers.

Oblivious to the tickling winds, forgotten tendrils of buried emotions lie limp in ecstasy.

Secure and steady in her grasp, as I wander, only to return.

An empty grotto echoes thoughts nearly dreamed.

Painful freedom may linger and prance about twilight's outskirts.

Tumbling and jumping, spinning and swirling, twin entities converge Matter can be mixed, and again distributed.

I pause by a paradox of frosted mirrors, but she continues leaving what you cannot know.

Adolescence

August heat pervades the air. My feverish body seeks to find solace

In the comfort of the Cool white sheets

Nestled against my body

Lengthwise

The heat meanders across Ears, eyes, mouth, Down past

The slight circles of breasts to straight, long, adult toes And slowly onto the Cool white sheets leaving a Small white mark near an old faded stain Signs of womanhood juxtaposed with The hot August night.

Disillusions

The man kept his eyes on the cactus. His feet became increasingly scorched with each wicked step. His head throbbed, his tongue was swollen and his skin was bright red from the sun, but he only had eyes for the cactus. He faltered, and his head went down When he glanced again there was a grove right near the cactus.

His head went up, and adrenalin seemed to course through his body. His pace increased to a trot, reminding him of the rides he used to give his kids at the beach. His eyes roamed from the cactus to the grove where his wife stood waiting. She ran towards him, but they didn't seem to get any closer. Hour after hour they ran, till finally they met.

Off they went to explore the oasis, checking each tree, touching each plant, holding hands and laughing. They came to the remains of a waterhole, and he slept on the wet sand in her shade. She stood guard.

The harsh winds blew the sand over the bare desert where nothing but cacti survive. Every now and then the sands shift, exposing a skeleton curled up next to a cactus as though it is sleeping.

We both were made of flesh and blood. We loved the race of man.

Like Noah in the sacred flood, From ancient laws we ran.

We criticized conformity. We scorned the selfish fool. Like Babylon, the lost city, This one held no safe tool.

His side by mine, we held the tree, Our backs pressed to the skin.

Like gentle Ruth toward Naomi, Our deeds for man would win.

Through graves of people soiled and clean, We ran and sang our tune.

As David killed the Philistine, We'd Christianize them soon.

But something cruel, almost like sin, I found in me one day .

As Solomon sought truths within, I could not find his way

I found him in his shady part And dragged him from his toil. As Satan foul and God of heart, Our odds turned hope to spoil.

I understand our love will hold. Our thoughts will always be. But Christ he is, as I am told; He dies nailed to the
