Frank M. Groff A day for toil. an hour for sport. But for a friend is life too short. - Ralph Waldo Emerson Frank M. Groff was a great man who spent thirty- five years at Friends' Central, thirteen of which were with our class. He tried to know everyone. even those whom he didn't have as sutdents. When we were in the lower school. Mr. Groff was the first person we saw every morning on the back playground. We also saw him for gym where he referred to everyone by the endearing zany nicknames he chose for us. In 1976, Mr. Groff "retired" , but he couldn't stay away. We meant as much to him as he meant to us. Last May. for instance. he spent many hours watchin'g the baseball team play, critiquing everything they did. We all would have been pleased if this book could have been presented to Mr. Groff. but we regret that this is not possible .

SWEET SUNSET It smelled dirty, but it smelled clean. The soil, chocolate brown at my feet and saw-dust yellow in the distance, flaunted a distinct redolence. One expects soil to be dirty, but land smelled immaculately pure. Blobs and dabs of caramel lay haphazardly in front of me. How else could one describe those swiveling massive mountains? I felt as if I could form a crevice in the mountain wall just by twisting my finger through the soft sugar. The sun, a tangerine hurled through the clouds in slow motion, was quickly being sucked in by the caramel pyramids. First, the sun resembled a crystal ball on a large podium. Then, as the sticky giants rapidly devoured it, it turned into the side view of a sizzling, fried egg. I felt that if I squeezed the tangerine, exhilarating rays would squirt out in the consistency of tart, orange pulp. At last, the sweet monsters completely enveloped their prey. In its place they regurgitated a steely sheet of Reynolds Wrap, which covered the atmosphere. Tiny lights, like droplets of lemonade, gazed in through the holes in the foil, representing the ever - burning stars. - Suniti Nimbkar '82
