Soccer

Enthusiasm and confidence ran high in the Varsity Soccer Team at the beginning of last fall. We had a very promising start by placing second out of eight teams in the pre-season Penn-Jersey League Tournament. Our season 1s hightlight was a 9 - 0 victory over Perkiomen. Although our team had an abundance of natural talent, we lacked the maturity as well as the consistency that a team needs to be a winning one. Our hopeful season quickly slipped away from us, and frustration and disappointment replaced the enthusiasm, Our final record was 3 - 11 - 2.

Football The F ,C, Herd had a difficult job this year; they had to defend the title of Penn-Jersey Champions. Although there was less hunger and excitement on the team this year, there was a dominating sense of quiet determination which led us to the championship. We ended up with a 7 - 2 record; the total margin of our losses was by three points. Our game against P. S.D. was the closest game of the season. With some last minute team efforts and a field goal with 11 seconds remaining, we emerged victorious with a score of 18 - 15. The week before we played Pennington was full of tension as it was before all of our big games. We came through playing extremely well, shutting them out 19 - 0. Homecoming was disappointing with St. Joseph's of Camden the victors by a score of 15 - 14. Several key injuries, over confidence, and being unprepared were the reasons behind our first loss. For many of the seniors, the Mitchell game meant more than just winning the championship. In the six years we have been playing them we have never won. This year we came out and whipped them 33 - 18 in a game that the Herd controlled from the opening kick off. The Herd was very experienced with 12 seniors in starting positions. Seven players were chosen to be on the all-league team. They were: Mark Adams, Del Evans, Rick Bellano, Albert Kohl, Rick Atkins, Kevin Cain, and Bill Folino. Five team members made honorable mention. One of the team's strong points was their front line composed solely of seniors. With the support and outstanding blocking provided by the front line, Del Evan's stardom was born. Del ran for 1101 yards from the fullback position to become F .C. S • 1 s first 1000 yard rusher in 25 years. He also scored 15 touchdowns and was ranked as the fifth leading scorer in the state. The season was an excellent one, and the players benefited not only from learning how to tackle and punt, but also from the closeness and friendships that developed.

They were a young team - determined and hard working. Their fine team efforts won them the most outstanding record in the history ofF .C .S. hockey. The first team, on the other hand, learned the frustrations of losing in the final seconds. Although they clearly dominated in the majority of the games, they could not capitalize on the chances to score. The team consisted of the strong defense of Nina, Gini, Sally, Lise, Sarah, Hannah, and Betsy; and forwards: Alex, Karen H. 1 Karen P. 1 Beth, and Ann. Unfortunately 1 all of their enthusiasm was not quite enough to have a winning season. Their final record was 4- 7- 1.

Lakefield Soccer Weekend During the first weekend in November, the Varsity Soccer Team became the first team in school history to defend their honor outside the United States of America by making a 600 mile trip to Lakefield College School in Canada with four coaches and eighteen Junior Varsity players. Unfortunately, Friends' Central lost all four games. At the school, special events were as common as soccer balls; among the distin~lished guests who appeared were the school's entire Board of Governors, a Canadian cabinet minister, the Bishop of Peterborough, and the Ancaster Marching Band. The refreshing weekend was officially concluded with a party for the participating athletes and coaches at the home of headmaster Terry Guest, followed by an elaborate banquet in the dining hall, at which speeches and various gifts were exchanged.

Girls AA The Girls' A.A. was very busy this year raising money for scholarships to help Hockey players attend sport camps. They had bake sales, candy sales, sold Booster Buttons, and Friends' Central T-shirts. The annual ski trip to Camelback w as a highlight of the season, and the officers Nina Weisbord, Karen Palcho, and Janet Kendall planned the Mother-Daughter Banquet to honor the teams and graduating seniors. Boys' A.A. got off to a fast start this year raising 300 dollars through the sale of soft pretzels. With this money, we will purchase a new trophy case for the school. Along with raising money, we also sponsor many school activities with the assistance of the Girls' A.A.

The Friends' Central Math Team is a group of ninth through twelfth graders who are willing to sacrifice their Saturday mornings approximately once a month in the interest of school spirit and grueling competition, Why do they do it? Some enjoy the challenge of working math problems under pressure. Some keep coming back to improve their individual score. But most come only for the free doughnuts. A meet consists of five events. Each event has its own category such as Geometry, Algebra, word problems, etc •• Three people from each school are allowed ten minutes to solve a two-, three-, and five- point problem in each event, giving a possible total of thirty points per team. When all five events are over, the top three people from each team are chosen to compete in the team problem. These three people are allowed to work together for either ten or fifteen minutes depending on the difficulty of the question. The ten points from the team problem can determine the winner of the meet as was the case when we won our only home meet last year.

The Student-Falculty Senate differs from the Student Council in that it deals with problems that involve both the students and the faculty. In the past, we have worked on such conflicts as gum-chewing, blue jeans, and study halls. This year, we are working on an open campus proposal, along with the yearly problem of keeping the F .C. grounds clean, especially the cafeteria. The Senate has two representatives from each class, one student and one faculty member, and one member of the Council attends each meeting.

This year Focus, its chief editor being Ed Nace, has broadened its scope by printing students' creative writing and outside news of interest to students.

This year the B.S. U. sponsored "Black Culture Day" on February fourteenth, which proved once again to be informative for all, and a successful dance on March fourth.

This past year was very productive for the Student Council. Under the leadership of President Dave DeVault, the Council sponsored a variety of successful activities and services, such as movies, coffeehouses, the soda machine and Workday. Workday, an annual Council event, was held on a chilly November day. One thousand dollars was raised through the efforts of many hard-working students. A portion of the earnings were donated to the Non-white Scholarship Fund.

Boys Basketball

The Friends' Central "Wild Bunch" successfully completed their season with a better than . 500 record. One highlight of the season occurred at Academy of the New Church, a playoff contender. It was a game in which the Varsity pulled all its talents together to overcome a third quarter 14 point deficit, en rout to a 64 - 60 win. A scoring spree by senior co-captain Gary "Dr . G. 11 Fornia, many defensive rebounds by senior co-captain Kevin "Swat" Cain, Rick "Wal" Atkins and Bernard "Disco" Harris, along with the tight defense and exceptional passing of Matt "The Doctor" Joseph and Marc "The Mouth" Munafo enabled F. C. to pull out the victory. "The Mouth" is the only known player in Friends' Central's history to swallow a basketball fully inflated.

Girls Basketball

This year's Basketball Team was the most powerful that Friends' Central has had in nearly five years. For the first time in a while we were blessed with a tall team. Our 5 '11" center Marion Crowell towered over the court, and Betsy Meyer 5'10", Karen Palcho 5' 5", and Nina Weisbord 5'8" were impenetrable under the backboards. Our guards, team captain Gini Bradley, Deborah Peltz, Karen Horikawa, and Sally Jackson were able to both move the ball and be valuable rebounders. On offense, our combination of height and ball handling was unbeatable; we were able to average over 40 points a game. The bulk of the scoring was done by the trio of Marion Crowell, Betsy Meyer, and Gini Bradley, but the entire team also contributed to offense. Next year's team looks promising since its losing only two players: Gini and Karen.

Wrestling The biggest asset to this year's wrestling squad was not one or two outstanding wrestlers; instead, it was team cont inuity. The total team effort provided us with a superb season headed by cocaptains Dan Ritt and Griff Raymond . The team continually registered wins throughout the season . The highlight of our season was our match against league rival George School. Team efforts in the past two years have resulted in victory, and culminated by a clutch performance by Geoffrey Schwartz, the "Grapplers" again rallied, winning 25-21. Head coach Tim Golding was flanked by Doug Ross, who returned as an assistant coach after a four-year absence. As always, Graham Michael volunteered his support at practices and at matches. All three did a fine job in coaching and developing the team . We are looking forward to a good season next year, but the loss of seniors Dan Ritt, Rick Bellano and Geoff Schwartz will have a decided effect upon the F. C. Grapplers.

With the assistance of Mr. Farraday, Jas Smith organized a Friends' Central Squash Team, in the winter of 1976 . This endeavor was a challenge, because it meant that the involved students would have the responsibility of participating in a sport off campus, without a faculty coach or advisor. In its second year, Squash has become a successful addition to the Friends' Central athletic program. Last year, it was frustrating for the inexperienced team to compete against the seasoned teams of other schools. This year, the season was more fulfilling, as the number of players has increased, and their experience is coming quickly. Since there is a building interest for Squash in the school, the sport seems destined to continue at Friends 1 Central.

TRACK

As co-captain of the 1976 track team, I had unique insight into its problems. We had, like most track teams, many weaknesses as well as strengths. We were weak in certain running events and had very few older students to lead the team. Despite this, we finished the season undefeated, with wins at the Penn-Jersey championship meet and the Church Farm School invitational. Led by Delevan Evans and William Staten, the ninth and tenth graders were our big asset; they were consistent winners. Without co-captains Dan Weiser and Jay Lindquist, and classmate Steve Yarnall, however, we could not have achieved such success. It was truly the result of a total team effort.

BASEBALL

Although we got off to a slow start by losing our first two games, the 1976 Varsity Baseball team had high hopes that were eventually fulfilled. Marc Munafo, Albert Kohl, and Michael Rowan started hitting the ball, and Alex Otey had some good performances on the mound. Dominic DiPrinzio and Rick Atkins greatly improved in their new positions, and Morris Kay did well at first base. Rick Moses used his speed to steal many bases and made very few errors in right field. There were two major highlights of the season. The first occured when Gary pitched a no-hitter and beat Perkiomen 19-2. Secondly, in the last game against George School, F. C. scored two runs in the last inning to win 3-2. This win gave the team a five hundred record for the first time in many years. Coach Jeff Bowker is looking forward to even greater things next season.

TENNIS

The 1976-77 girls tennis team consisted of '76 captain Robin Rosenfeld, 1 77 captain Kitty Keith and teammates Patty Bleznak, Joan Lavine, Ethyl Treatman, Lexy Lovell, Jeannie McCabe, Gigi Corson and Debbie Peltz. Although they were our youngest members, Debbie and Gigi played second and third singles. We were a fairly inexperienced team, but our unusual enthusiasm more than compensated. Our victories over Ellis and Merion Mercy were our finest matches. Mrs. Schroeder was our inspirational coach as well as the censor of our bus conversations. She succeeded in achieving unity within a team of diversified individuals. We managed to have a good time while improving our skills. This year, we plan to dazzle the courts with matching tennis attire, earrings, and bandanas.

TENNIS Tennis - Spring 1976 Despite the loss of Eve Ellis, the team improved dramatically and managed to defeat its two arch-rivals, Germantown Friends and George School. Friends' Central placed second in the Penn-Jersey Conference, with Bill Weiner and J.B. Scott winning individual titles at second and third singles respectively. The team also placed first in the Girard College Invitational Doubles Tournament. In general, it has had a tremendous record, and is looking forward to a fine season this coming spring.

LACROSSE This year, the Varsity Lacrosse team had an exciting season. Everyone was determined to learn new skills and plays, as well as improve on our old ones. Lise Funderberg, Captain Hannah Cowitz, Nina Weisbord and Ann Whereat were some of the team members who employed the zone defense. This worked well to outwit our opponents. The traditional man-to-man defense system was also used to help keep the ball on the offensive. Karen Horikawa, Sally Jackson, Alex Richardson and Karen Palcho made up part of our strong offense. They often broke through our opponents' defensive line to score the needed goal. Aided by the many returning seniors, the team steadily improved. Our coaches were dedicated and worked on many new drills and techniques. We ran to improve our endurance, which we soon learned to be a vital part of the game. Our work paid off when we played our games where we met such rivals as Shipley, Agnes Irwin and Germantown Academy. We also participated in the annual Lacrosse Play Day. Our spirit was high and all in all everyone had a good time this year. The outstanding display of ability by the underclassmen assures F. C. that it will have many exciting lacrosse teams in the future.

ARCHERY What can you say about a team that has been undefeated for two years? We're great! The four new members of the team astounded the school by shooting top scores, and the old members shot equally well. The result was overwhelming as we trampled all of our opponents to add another undefeated season to our record. Our success was a result of not only good aim, but also of strong team spirit. Extra-curricular activities included telephoning each other the night before a meet to be supportive, making hundreds of lollypop boosters, and, when we really got going, making publicity posters. We had a good time-winning especially adds to the fun. All but one member are back this year, so we 1re counting on three winning seasons in a row. With Parr for a coach, we can't miss.

SERVICE COMMITTEE The Service Committee had another productive year. Secretary Sally Jackson, Treasurer Hannah Cowitz, Vice-President Karen Horikawa, and President Alex Richardson all worked hard at their jobs. A lucrative community Chest Drive raised $1, 600 which was donated to several worthy charities. Another beneficent project, the clothing drive for AFSC involved the entire school. The foreign exchange student weekend proved to be educational and enjoyable for all participants. Especially entertaining was the square dance. Exchange Students who stayed at Friends' Central for one trimester came from Iowa, Canada and France. The final event of the year was Carnival, a highlight of every Friends' Central spring.
