Class History 1953 And in the beginning, there was Paul. But he was not to be alone for long. Soon the blond Kindergarten debutantes, Anita Grumbling and Barbara Weber, frolicked into the classroom with the infamous snickerer, Ken Poppe, and the soccer star, Ron Diment, close behind. Off in a corner, Harriet Pollack commented on the aesthetic composition of Jack and the Beanstalk, while a furry white rabbit listened. Grades one to six were formative years. Picture Lower School when Russell Bleakley sang Gilbert and Sullivan's "Mikado" to Sharon Simon, who was engrossed in creating one loving full-scale Triceratops named Uncle Beasley. Marjorie Hallahan simultaneously planned the construction of an igloo (or was it a tepee? . at Lin villa Orchards. Jack Schwartz and Brian Kunz played baseball while Barbara North, one of Mr. Statler's notorious nine, read a German dictionary. Remember the days when Bill Johnson industriously saved his pennies until they numbered thirty-five and "Louie" Richter, complete with flamboyant tie, directed the bus to Chez-vous while ultra-conservative Paul Cerwinka discussed politics with the well-traveled Bill Evans? Junior high officially began when the Lansdowne Friends' school bus deposited David George, Janet Crane, Sue Mogee, Jean Murdock, and Holly Quillen on Friends'

Central's territory. A gray-vested V.W.F. authority-posing as Scott Miller, athletelistened to Diane Bierman and Mike Zomber debate religious views. Judy Ellis told Cathy Zahn that the name Richard appeared in her tea leaves. Richard Reish overheard, but we suspect he did not misunderstand. Lyn Bixby practiced year-book organization while Bob Roberts, Bill Swain, and Joel Burg peacefully did their homework? Eventually, the chaotic kids of '67 found that high school .was upon them. Now journalist Jed Callen attempted to make life in the chem lab; and Stephen Purdy discussed the philosophical portent of unbreakable habits. Future surgeon Stephen Sclan objected to medicare; Ron (Tony) Staton mentioned a girl named Maria on his way to wrestling practice; and Carolyn Hebden tried to organize a seance while Rebecca Lyford read Henry Miller and Laura Primakoff analyzed the political significance of foreign travel. Pat Hutchings spoke of vista; Chip Keinath made a furor in the art studio; and Murray Settlage played "My country 'tis of thee" on his guitar. Don Smith became F. C.'s official light up director; Tony Ely was frightened by snow; and Heather Hill wondered about the anonymous note on the bulletin board. Exchange students, Michael Schuster and Connie Raschkowitch, discussed the advantages of American education while Bob Wadleigh, Alan Rubin, and Dan Carter watched Jim Kempton, Geoff Kerr, Tom Boden, Ron Camp, and Tom Woodbury aiding one another in study. This book ends our fourteen year history of life at Friends' Central. May we always be remembered as the class of '67.

Many people, including opposing coaches, did not expect the Friends' Central football team to win many games this year. Mr. Kirk, Mr. Foulke, and the members of the football team, however, were thinking about winning. Everyone was surprised when F.C. made a run for the championship. The record was 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the league. The defense was bolstered by two all-league players, Tom Boden at guard and co-captain Scott Miller at tackle. The defense showed its ability in 7-6 victories over Bryn Athen, George School (on Homecoming Day), and Hun School. The offense was sparked by two all-league players, sophomore end Charlie Preston, and co-captain Jack Schwartz at quarterback. A 33-0 win over Devereux and a 24-14 victory over Germantown Friends' highlighted the. scoring plus high scoring wins over Episcopal and Booth in pre-season scrimmages. The seniors led the team to its first winning season since 1952 although in many games the line was outweighed by as much as 25 lbs. per man.

The F. C. soccer team started the season with great potential. The Murraymen won their first two games. The team record at one point was 4-4; however, from then on the team experienced some tough breaks. With the loss of the last five games, all by close scores, the season's final record was 4-9. Seven members of the team will be graduating: Ron Diment, captain and leading scorer, Dan Carter, Brian Kunz, Rob Wadleigh, Tom Woodbury, Russ Bleakley, and Jim Kempton. All-league honors went to Ron Diment, first team; Brian Kunz, Rob Wadleigh, second team; Dan Carter, Russ Bleakley, Rob Wolfe, honorable mention. The season's high points were a 7-0 win over West Catholic and a 6-0 win over Malvern. Next year's team will be ably led by co-captains Rob Madow and David Arnold.

The girls' Varsity Hockey team ended its season with a record of 5 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie. The coaching of Mrs. Jackson helped the squad play excellent hockey. The finest game the girls played was against Westtown. Great hustle and desire were responsible for the win over Westtown (2-1), for the first liime in five years. Other highlights of the season were the game against Germantown Friends. Mrs. Jackson thought that Germantown Friends was the best team the squad played, and both teams fought to a 1-1 tie. Seniors on the squad were Captain Holly Quillen, Jean Murdock, Barbie Weber, Lyn Bixby, Cathy Zahn, Rebecca Lyford, Barbara North, Anita Grumbling, and Judi Ellis. High scorer for the team was Connie Burgess.

This year's basketball team, under the leadership of coach Bruce Williams, started the season with high hopes. For the first time in several years there were quite a few boys who came out for the team. Fifteen players came to practice each day and were put through the paces by Coach Williams. Ron Diment and Ken Poppe provided the leadership and scoring punch. Two juniors, Perry Jones and Don Fair, provided strength on the boards. The rest of the team comprised mostly of sophomores, D. Williams, J_ Ludwig, D. Smile, and C. Grumbling, can look forward to having good seasons in the future.

These girls were determined to prove to the boys that with the new unlimited dribble they were really playing basketball and that they did not have to be able to do fifty push-ups to be good at it. Under the direction of Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Corl, the team played three encouraging practice games against Merion Academy, Tatnall, and Lower Merion High School. In these early victories, Seniors, Holly Quillen, Barbara Weber, and Jean Murdock, Juniors, Addie Lindquist, Debbie Massey, Connie Burgess, Nancy Alessandroni, and Sophomore, Mia Lindquist, provided shooting accuracy. Guards, Holly Bixby, Joyce Ginsburg, and Carol Zimmerman were highly effective. The other Sophomores, Nancy Murdock, Susie Wright, Jennifer Malamud, Karen Brown, Linda Smith, and Karen Wermuth promised a successful season for the second team and also fine girls' basketball for the future.

The Friends' Central Wrestling Team has a new coach, Mr. Wolfe, for the 1967 season. This year's team does not have enough men to fill all the wrestling weights, and because of this they must forfeit ten points every match. This puts tremendous pressure on each individual to excel. John Siter starts the team at ninetyfive pounds. He is followed by Mark Zinman in the 103 lb. class. Mark took second in the Penn-Jersey League Tournament. The team has a very strong middle weight group: Charlie Shaw, 120 lbs., Len Davis, 127 lbs; Louis Davis, 133 lbs. The 138 lb. class is wrestled by captain Ron Staton and is followed by Penn-Jersey and Quaker City champion, Willie Brown, at 145 lbs. Frank Garrison, an eighth grader, has taken over the 154 lb. class. Steve Purdy, in his first year of wrestling, is in the 165 lb. class. Alan Sax and Larry Camp trade off at the heavier weights.

This year the Varsity Lacrosse team improved continually. throughout the season. During spring vacation some of the girls were able to attend lacrosse camp; this helped them in· dividually and increased the ability of the entire team. The girls maintained their enthusiasm and desire to win throughout the season. A few of the girls would stay and practice shooting and passing even after sports was dismissed. In general, the girls felt they had a successful season.

The Friends' Central Varsity baseball team has great prospects this year as one of the powers in the lnteracademic League. The baseball team, like the football team, is made up of previous varsity players. Returning lettermen are: Jack Schwartz and Ken Poppe (cocaptains), Ron Diment, Chip Keinath, Dick Reish, Russell Bleakly, Joe Ludwig, Dave Smile, Dave Sears, and Perry Jones. The pitching staff should rank high in the league with Jack Schwartz, Perry Jones, Chip Keinath, and Dave Sears returning. The infield and outfield will be strong with the loss of only two men. This year's team should bring winning championship baseball back to Friends' Central.
