SENIOR CLASS Here we stand, that fabulous class that won't soon be forgotten. Who can forget our hours of posing as a '64, our exciting boy-girl hockey game, and our day at the U.N. that was so nervewracking (for the U.N. that is.). We are the class that brought the prodigious Peppermint Lounge, the fantabulous Fontaine.r de Tivoli, and the extravagant, exciting Enchanted Forest to Friends' Central! Here we are-picturesquely posed on the graduation steps, with hopeful thoughts of a similar pose in far-off June. To our faithful followers , the Class of '65 , we gladly leave our solemn expressions, resulting from our many college tests, applications, and decisions. JUNIOR CLASS Spirit and camaraderie were the keynotes of the Junior Class this year. All-around Juniors participated in school activities and played Varsity sports with "vigor." One could always find the Juniors supporting F.C. functions and warming the bleachers at games-cheering the loudest! Once again the faculty tried to "tame" us, but we remain "the most talkative class" in the school . . . forever debating ( ?) . It's been said one could always find us by standing in the front hall and following the noise. The typical Junior told elephant jokes, danced the froug, and wore loafers and the color burgundy. We discussed (argued?) politics, civil rights, the Peace Corps, and the cold war. Most important of all, we took College Boards and worried about college. Tons of homework assailed us t~is year, but we managed to come through it; working hard all the way. Now we're ready to be the great Senior Class of '65.

STUDENT COUNCIL We shall never forget that meeting ... The fall brought many projects for us all-dances, refreshments, used and paperback books, and Work Day. Somehow, it turned out that every committee either needed or was owed money. Our treasurer turned pale to announce that we were $51.00 in the red. A silence overcame us. What would happen to the Student Council? Luckily, a year of hard work proved successful, and the Student Council accomplished much through the helpful guidance of Miss Fiesel and Mr. Fickensher.

This year the Service Committee was especially large and active. In addition to successfully sponsoring the annual Carnival, UNICEF drive, and clothing drive, the Committee boasted record participation in the Commu-nity Chest Drive. Other sub-committees, the Affiliation Committee, Peace Committee, Publicity Committee, Race Relations Committee, Social Service Committee, and Work Camp Committee, showed interest and initiative. Under the leadership of an excellent executive committee, Celeste Reill, president; Virginia Duthie, vice-president; Judy Seltzer, secretary; Stuart Wetterholt, treasurer; the Service Committee completed an interesting and successful year. Other Senior members who devoted much time to the Committee were: Madeline Church, Martin Crabtree, Kathy Hibbs, Sandra Marshall, Frances Schwarz, Lauren Simon, and Gabriele Suren. As in past years, Mr. Emerson, faculty advisor, deserves the Service Committee's thanks for his help.

CHORUS The height of chorus actlvtty was reached in April at the Music Festival. Directed by Mrs. Satterthwaite, the chorus gav~ an excellent performance which included the singing of "Give Me Your Tired," "Wondrous Love," and "The Last Words Of David." The newly formed "octet" singing "Make Someone Happy," "I Enjoy Being A Girl," and "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair," also contributed to the program. A particularly enthusiastic group, the "octet," has given several performances both in and outside of school throughout the year.

ORCHESTRA The Friends' Central Orchestra rehearses Tuesdays and Fridays under the direction of Dr . .Carl M. Suppa. Dr. Suppa has many activities besides those at Friends' Central. He also conducts for the Suburban Opera Society, the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company, and the Pittsburgh Opera Company as well as directing the Springfield Symphony Society. This year he received his Doctor of Music degree from the Combs College of Music. Dr. Suppa formed a brass ensemble this year which played several selections alone and then along with the orchestra at the Christmas program. The orchestra will play again at the Spring Music Festival. Several of the members will appear as soloists or as part of small instrumental groups. The faithful seniors in the orchestra this year are Virginia Duthie, Celeste Reill, and Thomas Draper.

The Friends' Central News is a monthly student publication which covers the news of both the Upper and Lower schools. This year, among the nine seniors on the staff were: Shellie Curcio, editor-in-chief; Tom Draper, who wrote his own humor column, "The Rover"; Arline Freeman, picture editor; Sophie Jacobs and Cindy Ornsteen, reporters-at-large ; Craig Marshall, business manager ; Harriet Odenheimer, Student Council reporter; Harry Werner, Lower School editor; and John Witherspoon, boys' sports editor. The News tries to cover every aspect of school life, and to uphold the high standards of Friends' Central. Of interest to the student body this year were "Council Corner, " "Student Opinion," "Did You Know . . . ," the "Word Game," and "The Rover"-the latter a humorous commentary on everyday school life. Editorials were run concerning the Pennsylvania Constitutional Revision Plan, segregation, and other imminent issues. This year, editorials and commentaries have been emphasized; and letters-to-the-editor have been encouraged. The sports staff has gone ahead with new ideas for "Time Out." A new column, "Music Notes," has been initiated to cover the news of the music department. Because many of the members of the staff are on Varsity teams, Student Council, Service Committee, Honor Committee, or are connected with various recreational activities, the News has been able to provide both concise facts and "behind the scenes" information of interest and importance to the student body. DRAMA This year's Drama Workshop, under the able direction of Mr. Burgess, performed Harvey in assembly and celebrated Shakespeare's 400th birth date in April with a program of scenes, entitled "Humor in Shakespeare." At the beginning of the year, an outsider might have visited the workshop and found the students going through odd motions in silence. Actually we were doing charades which help in building our acting ability. The seniors, Lauren, Janice, and Sandra will surely miss this period when they graduate!

FOOTBALL This year's football squad finished the season with a dis appointing record of no wins and eight losses. Early in the season things looked brighter as F.C. romped over Devereux School in a pre-season scrimmage 42-6. Although F.C.'s offensive sword was blunted by injuries, the defense came up with several fine efforts. Before finally succumbing 14-6, F.C. held League champion Perkiomen Prep. to a 6-6 score. Much credit goes to co-captains Chris Taylor and Pete Howell and Coach Kirk, who was handicapped by the absence of Mr. Burgess.

HOCKEY This year's Varsity hockey squad, while not winning very many games, played some excellent hockey. Through the excellent coaching of Mrs. Jackson, the team defeated Stevens, Ellis, and Lankenau while tying Shipley. The finest game the girls played was against Baldwin. Even though they lost 3-1 the girls showed great hustle and desire which are important in any sport. A large part of the team consisted of seniors. On the first team were Captain Barbie Linnehan, Ginny Duthie, Gail Coleman, Suzie Bohrer, Mimi Vogt, Barbie Rickards, Gail Jackson, Lyn Murray, and Linda Rugh. On the second team were Sandy Marshall, Marti Plummer, Judy Price, and Frannie Schwarz. Also there were some very promising juniors and sophomores. High scorer for the team was Barbie Linnehan.

SOCCER The 1963 soccer season had its high and low points. The team was plagued by an unusual number of injuries. The high point was a 3-0 win over the defending League champion, Germantown Friends. Craig Marshall was the leading scorer of the season. Coach Cooper provided needed inspiration when the team was in poor spirits. Even though the team experienced some disappointments, Rusty Taylor made the first team of the all Inter-Ac; Bill Young and Charlie Price were voted honorable mention.

BASKETBALL Mr. Cherim feels that the addition of Bob and Ed Boyer, Fred Tomlin, Art Redgrave, Charlie Price, and Steve McGarvey, gave the '63-'64 Quaker five a depth which it has lacked in previous years. Although the team appreciated the few loyal supporters who regularly attende~ the games, they urge more people to come out to the games during next year's season. Any team can be as good as the support behind it.

WRESTLING This year the wrestling team was under the excellent coaching of Mr. Richard Osman. Mr. Osman worked with two extremes in the team; first year men, Brooke Makler, Brown, Staten, and Keen and experienced wrestlers Young, Dulkerian, Marshall, Howell, and Paxon. Young and Makler earned over 50 points during the season, setting a school record .

GIRLS' BASKETBALL The girls' Varsity Basketball team, coached by Miss Adele Statzell, played with entirely new rules. The roving players, two persons from each team, are free to rove up and down the entire court: This calls for a different type of defense, since there are four forwards shooting at one end. The guards must now take their own foul shots if bhey are fouled, unlike the previous years when any one of the forwards took the shots. The team had a good season, highlighted by a 60-16 win over Abington Friends and a very close and exciting game with Shipley. Although Shipley won 41-40, the team played an excellent game and fought hard all the way through. Seniors on the team were Ginny Duthie, Barbie Linnehan, Fran Schwarz, Arline Freeman, and Sophie Jacobs.

DANCE This year's modern dance group in both the fall and winter season was directed by Mrs. Ross. Exposing dance as a form of art to the students, Mrs. Ross worked with the group with new enthusiasm. The fall group had the opportunity to go to New York to see the Martha Graham Dance Company. At the Christmas program, they performed a short composition directed by Mrs. Ross. In the spring the group participated in the Music Festival. The seniors who worked with this organization were Ellen Sheppard, Holly Hajjar, Arline Freeman, and Celeste Rei!!. It turned out to be a most productive year for the modern dance enthusiasts at Friends' Central.

FENCING

Although fencing is a relatively new sport at Friends' Central and may have fewer winter supporters than other teams, the members of the group are no less enthusiastic. Headed by Mr. Westfried , the fencing team has worked hard after school to improve their skills. Mr. Westfried will welcome any newcomers next year.

TRACK This year's track team, sparked by last year's successes, looks forward to a very fruitful year. Though hampered by the loss of three graduating senior lettermen (Class of 1963), this year's seniors join with a group of fast underclassmen to form the basis of our team. Last year, for the first time in many years, a fourmao mile relay team, coached by Mr. Sydney Young, entered the Penn Relays at Franklin Field. With two home meets this spring and prospects of a good season, our team ranks high in spirit and competitiveness. This year's team includes the following seniors: Bill Coleman (captain), Bill Young, Craig Marshall , and Leigh Hunter.

LACROSSE This year the lacrosse team improved steadily as the season progressed. A few of the players attended lacrosse camp during spring vacation; they helped the other team members with what they had learned there from the excellent coaching staff. The team showed a great deal of spirit in spite of its small size and poor weather conditions. In fact, some of the girls in their great enthusiasm received and gave many bruises; we began to wonder if Judy and Barbie or Toinette and Kathy would ever stop combat!

itches No-Hitter Against G.A . The 1964 Varsity baseball team, coached by Terry Cooper, is looking forward to duplicating or bettering their record of 1963. In 1963, the Varsity finished second behind Penn Charter in the Inter-Ac League. The F.C.S. team will have to cope with the loss of four of last year's starters, including the team 's pitcher-catcher battery. However, with the addition of Ed Boyer, a pitcher, and his brother Bob, a catcher, F.C. hopes to produce a strong battery for 1964. As in 1963, the infield will consist of returning starters Rusty Taylor, Tom Dean, and Chris Taylor. The team hopes to produce a strong outfield from the sophomore and junior classes. With Tom Dean as captain , F.C.S. hopes to make a bid for top position iri the Inter-Ac League.

SOFTBALL The underclassmen, particularly the ninth and tenth grades, deserve credit for supporting this year's softball team. The few hardy juniors and seniors who remained loyal to the team appreciate their interest. Unfortunately, lacrosse attracts many of the prospective upperclass softball enthusiasts. Captains Barbara Linnehan and Virginia Duthie hope that in future years team support will increase. Coached by Mrs. Doris Abrams, the softball girls participated in a thoroughly enjoyable season.

ARCHERY The Friends' Central archery squad practiced all fall for its spring season. This fall several of our top archers entered a state-wide high school student meet in which the scores were mailed. Lauren Simon won second place, Charity Coman came in third, Toni Young was fourth, Adrienne Roos took eighth place, and Belle Brett took tenth. Expertly coached by Mrs. Zimmermann, the team meets against other schools took place in the spring. The Varsity and Junior Varsity, composed mostly of jun;ors and seniors, have out-shot all other schools but one. Next year more underclassmen will be needed to fill the vacancies left by those great departing Senior Archers of 1964.
