It makes him aware of

what has gone before, what is happening now, and perhaps what can be done about the future.

this, our last year of high school, comes to an end, it closes the door on the largest portion of our school life-though we go on learning always.

As we look back, we remember how we once looked

ahead to our senior year, sometimes patiently, sometimes not.

And now, at last there, we, the Class

to the class. Beth Horning. alread1· campaigning for the Student Council presidency, tried to get some reactions from David Hardman. who was, is, and always will be taking pictures. The future of athletics at Friends' Central was insured when. on page two. Leslie made an interesting entrance equipped with hockey stick and shin guards, and dreams of a white blazer. Page three remains blank, but everyone was gathering strength and preparing for the coming hurricanes when. on page four. Virginia Becker and Ingrid Anderson, our double hellions, were alreadl plotting how to overthrow the faculty and blow up the school.

Meanwhile, Susi Laverty

was providing us with constant amusement with her colorful coiffeurs. and while Marti DeWindt never stopped talking. Adrienne Abrams sat by serenely knitting Mike Madow into a sweater. Onh one addition is recorded on page five. when in came Faith Slevin. nicely fitting the shoes of her older sister. Sanch·. On page six. 1re find four ne1r members: Lvnn Gartner roared in in ·a fury (we had fully expected her to arri,·e on the u.S.S. Saratoga). Meanwhile, back in the jungle. Dick Martin was hot on the trail

of anyone with ten fingers and a typewriter. Rima i\Iiller and Mary Werner were likely victims, but petite Mary escaped to the girls· room and Rima merelv sniffed with disdain as she clattered down to her custom-made Vauxhall. Last, but not least, came Captain John Logan, who gave both his brains and hot tempered determination to the glory of F.C.S. Marion, "Maria Callas" Burdick. then came in making love!~· sounds which melted the hard heart of neo-German Hardy Moore and sent him to his tankard of imported ale. Betsy Evans wandered 111

to her little Minor car, but no help was found. Several of the new entries made heavy imprints on page mne. First, we met Julie Berg, who will always be remembered as the brains behind the Yearbook of 1963. Then came Eddie Ashmore, soccer ball in hand, and Chris Collins, who had just mastered the art of yakking a mile a minute and eating at the same time. Vivian Appel. who was. and ahrays will be campaigning for Kennedy, and Jackie McAvoy, who was busy flirting with a local Fuller Brushman. When page ten appeared, our elrama department was complete. Larry Graves took charge of the Friday morning skits, and "Liliom"' was well prepared for with a leading lady, Candy Boyd. Doug Benson, our horse lover, joined us on page eleven, cheered on by our school-spirited Clemence Rava«on. They were followed by Harold Tiffany, who came in wearing water-\\·ings and teaching the Australian crawl. Bill Shaw kept in close contact with them on his radio. \rhich was never far away from him. The last page began with the arrival of AI Ackerman, who hiked in from Bryn Mawr College with a record of fol k songs under his arm. friends from Germany.

The many activities sponsored by the Student Council throughout the year are organized in order to unite the student body and to strengthen the student-faculty relationship. The "Get Acquainted Parties," which start off the school year, the collecting and selling of used books, and the publishing of a handbook for the convenience of new students are among its activities. Selling refreshments at many school events and organizing fire drills are some of its other jobs. This year the Council brought in outside speakers for several of the Monday assemblies. They also took full responsibility in running the paperbound book store. Work day was a decided success as was the big annual Student Council-Service Committee Dance.

Honor Committee

In the past few years the Honor Committee has come closer to obtaining its goal of spreading its in fluence into campus life and beco ming a more respected organization. This year it placed emphasis on individual student honor by sponsoring unproctored tests. Working on ca mpus clean-up, supervising stud y halls, and collaborating with, and sharing lunch supervision with th e Student Council, were among its oth er projects.

The Service Committee played an active part at Friends' Central this year by sponsoring such activities as the Community Chest Drive held in the fall, the Clothing Drive in the spring, and Carnival in :\1ay. Ylost of the money collected by the Community Chest Drive went to the United Fund. Several thousand pounds of clothing were collected throu ghout the entire Upper School during the clothing chive, and a prize was given to the homeroom giving the most. The proceeds from Carnival-the Committee's greatest success-helped to bring our two exchange students from Graefelfing. The Social Service Committees were also very active. This year the Service ·Committee was under the direction of Anne Malamud, the president, and other seniors, Mary Werner, Hardy Moore, Reid Stevens, Ann Ensor, Susi Blum, Clemence Ravacon, and Vivian Appel.

Affiliation

In December of 1950, Friends' Central's affiliation with the Realgymnasium Graefelfing, Germany, was started through the American Friends Service Committee. Under the guidance of Mr. Emerson, a year was spent in correspondence, and in 1951, the first two German exchange students arrived on the Friends' Central campus. Three years later, a Friends' Central boy and girl spent a year abroad and the affiliation program, as we know it, began. In the spring of each year, the Service Committee sponsors Carnival to help pay some of the expenses of exchange students. Last year Reid Stevens and Hardy Moore spent a year representing Friends' Central in Graefelfing. Reid and Hardy have done a great deal toward helping us to understand international relations by sharing their experiences with us. This year Bonnie and Hans are representing our German partner school here in America. Both have done a fine job of adjusting themselves to American life and have made many valuable contributions to Friends' Central School. Lynn Gartner participated in a different phase of our affiliation program. It consists of one or more Friends' Central students spending the second half of their junior year in Mexico. This helps us to become better acquainted with our Central American neighbors.

The Fri end s' Central News, a monthl y publication, has celebrated its thirtieth anni versa ry this year. The News - durin;r the anniversa ry yea r - attempted to maintain its traditional fa ce while intef! ratinf! new ideas and new trends in j ournalism into the traditi onal pattern . Experimenta ti on in "strea m-lined layo ut" was carried on, h oping to present the news in a more attractive manner. Special emph asis was give n this yea r to " features," a policy which extended even to the sports page. Among the new co lumns offered to readers b y th e News was " F orum," a stud y of Friends' Central top ics br ,·a ryin g writers who would have some special relati on to the subj ect. " College Confab" was desif! ned as a transm ission of the feelings of alumni in coll ege to Friends' Central students. A somewhat changed editorial page gave more prominent attention to editorial comment and letters to the . editor. The October issue of the News-distributed on Homeco min g- dedicated itself to the study of the theme, " Friends' Central: P ast, Present, and Futu re." Drama Minor

Students interested in drama met during the Tuesday and Thursday minor period. Under the direc· tion of Mr. Burgess they put on several productions. The first was given at the Temple Festival in early :\fovember. The next was performed before the entire school for the Christmas program. This year, the staff of the 1963 Yearbook, elected by the class, worked hard, along with many other members of the Senior Class, to make their annual an accurate and well-executed record of their years at Friends' Central. Pictures were taken, pages layed out, staff editors spent long hours working after school, but deadlines were met, and with the greatly appreciated help of faculty advisors, Mrs. Berenice Woerner and Mr. Samuel Y. Edgerton, the 1963 Yearbook is now a finished product.

Chorus

Tuesdays and Thursdays, many Senior High students co uld be seen walking in the direction of the recreation room for Chorus rehearsal. After the warming-up exercises, the students rehearsed for the Christmas program and " Oklahoma." The success of these performances reflected the amount of hard work contributed by each member of the chorus, as well as their director.

The purpose of the Girls' Athletic Association of Friends' Central is to promote interest and the desire to participate in athletic activities. The officers and class representatives accomplish this objective by sponsoring a system of awards for participation in the athletic program and conducting many activities to arouse school spirit. These include Blue-Gray Day, Field Day, Athletic Association-Cheerleaders Dance, and the Mother-Daughter Banquet.

This year the Boys' Athletic Association contributed much to the advancement of school spirit and the development of different teams. The Association, with its various activities, tried to develop the competitive attitude of the individual and create an atmosphere of team spirit. The Association attempted to increase the scope of its previously few activities, by sponsoring such activities as the A.A. Dance, the Boys' A.A. Banquet, bonfires, and boosting attendance at many athletic games.

Football

The football team was handicapped this year by lack of experienced players. They won only one game, a victory over George School. Returning seniors Fred Klaus and John Logan gave all they had to help spark the team and they were greatly helped by other former letter winners. The Kirkmen started off the season with games against two tough opponents. In spite of the spirit and skill of seniors Harold Tiffany, Fred Klaus, Marc Sherson, David Feinman, and John Logan, the scores marked up by F.C. opponents was quite high. However, the team never gave up hope, and everyone involved in the games profited greatly by the experience.

The Varsity Hockey team, under the leadership of Mrs. Jackson, defeated Lankenau, Haverford , and Ellis, and tied Baldwin. The tie was the closest an F.C. tea m has come to defeating Baldwin for many yea rs. Including the co-captains, there were seventeen seni ors on the tea m. They were Jackie McAvoy, Beth Horning. This year's soccer team, led by co-captains Ed Ashmore and George Lare had a very profitable season. Handicapped by many injuries, such as George's fateful leg accident, the team was left with a deficiency of power. However, with the skill of the seniors, the support of the underclassmen, and the superior coaching of Mr. Cooper, the team rallied to several victories and much fin e playin g.

Under the outstanding coaching of Mrs. Jackson, and the leadership of co-captains Beth Horning and Sue Ann Hort, the 1963 Girls' basketball team had an excellent season. The returning lettermen Faith Slevin, Leslie Statzell, Barbara Linnehan, and Virginia Duthie were aided by the addition of Martha De Windt and Judy Seltzer, to form one of the best Friends' Central teams in recent years. The second team was sparked by seniors Gwen Luff, Jackie McAvoy, Judy Herron, and Virginia Becker. A lot of credit also must be given to the junior, sophomore, and freshman girls who strengthened the squad. The highlights of the season were the 44-28 victory over the undefeated Shipley team, the 54 point lead over Abington Friends', and the 36-23 victory over Baldwin. The season ended with an unforgettable game against the Boys' basketball team.

The 1962-1<)63 Friends' Central School basketball team had four returning lettermen in Captain Tom Dean, George Lare, Larry Gra,·es, and Rusty Taylor. Other members of the squad \\"ere Andy Weinstein, David Feinman, David Sherson, Jim :\IcCleery. Ed Ashmore, John Witherspoon, Mark Allessandroni, and John Pannier. Due to its extraordinarily small team, this . year F.C. took a leave of absence from the Inter-Academic League. This year's quintet scored a great deal of points with its mercurial fast-break. Coach Cherim used a zone and a full court press for his strong defense. These two defenses helped the Blue and Gray have a successful season. Tom Dean, Larry Graves, and George Lare shared the single ga me hi gh by scoring 31 points each.

Wrestling This year's wrestling team, under the able leadership of co-captains John Logan and Bill Young, had a very profitable season. All members of the team displayed skill and spirit. Although John Logan and Doug Benson were the only seniors on the team, they were well supported by capable underclassmen. The guidance of Coach Samuel Y. Edgerton was a major factor in the skills and sportsmanship learned by all participants. Bill Young, at the time the Yearbook went to press, had a 10-2 record ; John Logan had a 9-3 record; Peter Bleakley, a 9-2-1 record; Pete Howell, a 5-5 record.
