FOREWORD

The Class of Nineteen Sixty-two leaves Friends' Central School in a period of paradox. While nations quarrel among themselves, the peoples of these nations long for peace and world understanding. A desire for world understanding can be seen in the United Nations where the interests of the governments are represented, in the nations of Europe which hav.e unified their economies and prosper in this unity, in the athletes who assemble below the Olympic torch in a true spirit of friendship and sportsmanship between all men, and perhaps most important of all, in the students who live and learn in foreign countries as world understanding is extended to youth. The Class of Nineteen Sixty-two wishes to further this spirit of world friendship, and to do so has chosen Internationalism as its theme.

We, the Class of 1962, dedicate our yearbook to Miss Ruth Fiesel and Mr. Stanley Cherim. Our class owes a special debt of gratitude to these teachers-to Miss Fiesel for the work she has done for the School as adviser to the Student Council, and to Mr. Cherim for the enthusiasm for his subject which he has inspired in his students. Miss Fiesel has given us her advice and guidance in many phases of our school activities, and we have found her help to be invaluable. Mr. Cherim, through his deep interest. in each of his students and his stimulating classes, has gained our respect and admiration. These two fine teachers are similar in one respect-each one has been a friend as well as a teacher.

The Student Council is composed of students from each grade of the Upper School, advised by Miss Fiesel. Its primary function is the maintenance of good relations between students and faculty. It also endeavors to work for the good of the student body and the school in general. The Council has been a very active and successful organization. This year it sponsored two "getacquainted " dances, a Junior High party, a movie, and the second annual workday. It also started a chess team and debating club, alleviated the lunch room problem, painted the Council room, held bake sales to raise needed funds, and began the Saturday morning work hall program. The main goal of the Honor Committee for this year has been to spread its influence into campus life with the intention of making the Committee a more respected and useful school organization. It has worked on several things this year such as exchanging visits with other schools for the purpose of improving Friends' Central's honor system, working on a campus betterment project, supervising lunchtime study halls, and accomplishing major changes in the library. It has been responsible for beginning unproctored testing in the school for the first time on a large scale. This was .,done in an effort to place more individual responsibility on the senior high students. The Honor Committee has also worked to develop a co-operative program with the Student Council. The effectiveness of this plan was proved in the handling of the lunch room where the duties were shared by Honor Committee and Student Council members.

Under the guidance of Mr. Emerson and sponsored by the Service Committee, Friends' Central began an affiliation program in D ecember of 1950 with Real gymnasium Graefelfing, Germany. After a year of correspondence, Friends' Central invited two German students to spend a year in America. In 1956 a Friends' Central boy and girl went to Graefelfing, and th e present exchange program was initiated. Each year in May, the Service Committee stages "Carnival," the proceeds of which help to finance some of the. expenses of the exchange students. At times a contribution is also made to the International Student Exchange Fund . Last year Fran Decker and Chris Woerner spent their junior year at the affiliated school. By sharing their impression of German life and people with us, Fran and Chris have helped to broaden Friends' Central's understanding of international relations. This year Conny Nitzke and Eckart Maegerlein were the student representatives from Germany. Their contributions to the senior class have been many. Both students have adjusted well to American life, but have still retained their individuality.

STUDENTS ABROAD

The Friends' Central "Student Abroad" program was established in 1945 , under the sponsorship of Amos J. Peaslee, a member of the Board of Trustees. The first year four studt'nts participated in the program; in the following years the numj:>er has varied. Under this plan, a l'...r-iends' Central student is sent to spend the last semester of his junior year in Mexico where he lives with a Mexican family and attends the American School Foundation. Last year George Schnyder and James Baraff left in January and returned in July. The boys did a good deal of traveling. They visited Acapulco, Cuernavaca, Vera Cruz, and Tuxpan. George and Jim say that the exchange program provides a fine opportunity for broadening cultural horizons and learning to view the world objectively.

During the past year, the Service Committee sponsored a dance with the Student Council, the Community Chest Drive in-the fall, the Clothing Drive in early spring, and the Carnival in May. While most of the money raised by the Community Chest Drive was donated to the United Fund, part of it was keflt by the Service Committee for calls from worthy organizations which came throughout the year. Proceeds from the Carnival will be used to bring two exchange students from Realgymnasium Graefelfing next year. Eckart Maegerlein and Cornelia Nitzke were our exchange students from Germany this year, while Reid Stevens and Hardy Moore represented us abroad. This year the Service Committee was led by Kenneth Kirchhofer under the guidance of Mr. Emerson, its faculty adviser. The membership increased considerably; this helped to expand its activities. The student body with its support aided the Service Committee in making this year a productive one.

The Friends' Central News is published monthly by a student staff advised by Mrs. Woerner, and covers news of both the Upper and Lower Schools. This year, there were four senior members on the staff. Bruce Yoskin was editor-in-chief; Bill Judson was the sports editor; Diana Khinoy was a reporter-at-large; and Brad Schaeffer had his own humor column. The News tries to cover every item of interest .concerning school life. Social activities were covered either in articles or in "Never on Week-days." The fact that members of various committees and Varsity teams were on the staff, afforded the News first hand coverage of these activities. A member of the Student Council covered Work Day, and a Varsity football member covered all the Varsity games. To give adequate coverage to the Lower School, the News carried a front page story and devoted at least two columns to "Lower School Notes" in every issue.

During the course of the year the members of the elected Yearbook staff along with many other members of the Class of Sixty-two, spent a great amount of time on the Yearbook. Yearbook staff members were noticeably absent from study halls, homeroom periods, and sometimes even from the lunchroom. However, after all the hard work and sacrifice of time, there is not one staff member who will say that it was not worth while. The Staff genuinely appreciates the assistance given it by members of the class-especially Sally Price, who edited the write-ups of every senior, and Bruce Yoskin, assisted by Rozzy Miller, who did a most capable job in securing advertising. Although much responsibility was placed on the shoulders of the Staff, the production of the Sixty-two Yearbook was truly a class effort.

CHORUS The Friends' Central School _Chorus meets twice weekly in the Rex Gymnasium under the direction of Mr. Krine Westhoven. This year the Chorus initiated the practice of electing student assistants. Chosen to aid Mr. Westhoven were Francis Bradley and Faith Slevin. Mary Poynter and Sue Ann Hort were the accompanists. The recent history of the Choru~ includes some noteworthy performances. A program of hymns and carols which included the "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's Messiah was given at Christmas 1959. In December, 1960, the Chorus sang four of six parts of the Bach Christmas Oratorio and was chosen on the merits of their performance to sing with the Youth Orchestra of Greater Philadelphia in the spring at the Academy of Music. The concert included Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," the Verdi Te Deum and Rimsky-Korsakoff's "Glory." The Chorus received highly favorable reviews in the Philadelphia papers. Gian-Carlo Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors" was the Christmas production in 1961. The Chorus also provided the evening's entertainment at Carnival.

GJLEE CJLUB The Glee Club is a group of male singers under the direction of Mr. Westhaven. The boys, from grades ten, eleven, and twelve, practice in the morning before school and work closely with the School Chorus. The Glee Club performs in student assemblies and at the Athletic Association banquets. Past performances in which the present Glee Club has participated are the Christmas programs of 1960 and 1961, "Wonderful Town," and a concert at the Academy of Music in April, 1961.

Between 8:15 and 9:00 1\.M. on Monday and Tuesday the Friends' Central School Orchestra met under the direction of Mr. Sigmund Hering of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Twenty-eight members of the student body availed themselves of the rewarding experience of practice and performance under talented leadership. In the pleasant tradition of t~e past few years the Orchestra performed for the faculty, students, parents, and friends of Friends' Central School during assembly programs. The Christmas Assembly, as usual, was . particularly enjoyable. The Annual Spring Concert in April was the musical high point of the year for those who love to hear good music-popular and classical-as well as those who try to interpret it. Friends' Central School Orchestra will miss the talent and the devotion to music of the seniors: Betsy Bush and Christopher Woerner, cellists; Jesse Wagner, percussionist; Robert McClenahan and Dennis Linnehan, clarinetists.

DRAMA

The members of the Drama Minor had a very busy season in 1961-62. Among the plays given by the class were "The Trysting Place," "Happy Journey," "Amah! and the Night Visitors," and excerpts from other plays. Seniors Mike Cohen and AI Kluber took part in "The Trysting Place" at the Temple Play Festival in the fall. Later in the year, Judy Horton, also a senior, directed "Happy Journey." Drama Minor was a challenging and rewarding experience for the students who participated in this course directed by Mr. Burgess.

CUM LAUDE MEMBERS ELECTED IN APRIL Two members of the senior class were elected to the Cum Laude Society in February, 1962. These new members are Scott Davis and David Wetterholt. By accepting the keys of the society, these students have pledged themselves to "continue the pursuit of learning and to make wisdom and truth the guide to their lives." The Cum Laude Society, founded in 1906, is the secondary school equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa. The founders felt that outstanding sclfolastic achievement should be recognized on the secondary school level as it is in college. Friends' Central became a member school in the Cum Laude Society in 1928 and since then h.as elected 289 students to membership. Another meeting of the Friends' Central chapter will take place in April at which time more qualifying seniors will be elected to membership.

The season of the Varsity football team was somewhat of a disappointment after the fine performances in the two pre-season scrimmages and in the first game with Malvern. The Quakers romped Devereaux School and tied Haverford School, which went on to win the Inter-academic League title. In the opening game against Malvern the excellent defense kept the champion slated Friars from the goal line until the final minutes of the last quarter; and the game ended with F. C. trailing 7-0, but a real upset for Malvern. The next week the Quakers met a more equal, but fired-up, Episcopal team and lost 18-7. A 14-0 victory over George School got the team under way, and the 7-2 victory over a tough Bryn Athyn squad balanced the record at 2 wins, 2 losses. It was at Chestnut Hill that F. C. met disaster in the form of the loss of captain and star halfback, Dave Boyd, because ot a knee injury. Before the game ended there were three injured starters on the bench and F. C. had to bow to Chestnut Hill's single touchdown and lose 6-0. The Quaker eleven went down to a 14-0 defeat at the hands of Hun School but bounced back to beat Germantown Friends' by the same score the next week as halfbacks Harold Tiffany and' Jim Baraff did a fine job in making up for the absence of Dave Boyd in scoring a touchdown apiece. In the final game of the season F. C. met an overwhelming Archmere squad, comparable to Malvern in strength and was handed its most crushing defeat, 28-0. The season's record: 3 wins; 5 losses.

HOCKEY This year, the girls on the Varsity Hockey team, under the direction of Mrs. Jackson, enjoyed their best season since 1953. Jn pre-season practice several of the returning team members, in addition to girls from other schools, attended the Central Hockey Day Camp. The girls practiced skills and plays for a week. On the last day of camp, a tournament was held with the different school teams competing against each other. Friends' Central's team was undefeated and won first place. During the regular season, the team won six games and lost only to Irwin and Baldwin. The high point of the season was when Friends' Central defeated Shipley for the first time in seven years. The other teams defeated were Merion Academy, Ellis, Stevens, Lankenau, and Germantown Friends'. Also this year, there were more seniors than ever before on the team: Captain Ann Hayward, Betty Johnson, Lynn Grein, Lynne Tindle, Sally Price, Kirk Harbison, Betsy Bush, Charlotte Herrmann, Diane Viguers, Betsy Charr, and Roslyn Miller. Credit must dso .be given to the junior and sophomore girls who made up the rest of the Varsity, and without whose help, the team would never have succeeded.

The record achieved by this year's Varsity soccer team i-s one of the best in the past fifteen years. Had the final game been won, it would have been the be~t. The soccer squad ended the season with a tally of five wins, eight losses, and two ties. In two pre-season scrimmages, the Quakers lost a close game to Sol.tth Philadelphia High School by a score of 4-3, but then came back to shut out Friends' Select with a score of 3-0. These games sharpened the team for its Interac league opener against Haverford, which it lost by two fluke goals, 2-1. In league games, the soccer team made its best showing against Chestnut Hill and Germantown Academy by defeating the former twice· and by shutting out the latter by scores of 1-1 and 3-0. Friends' Central's soccer team had the honor of having five of its members selected as part of the All-Interacademic league team. George lare and Dennis Linnehan made the first team, Rusty Taylor was selected for the second team, and Scott Davis and Mike Ellis received honorable mentions. This season, Co-captain Mike Ellis, Dennis Linnehan, and George Lare were major factors in Friends' Central's offensive strength, while Rusty Taylor, at center halfback, and Co-captain Scott Davis, as goalie, bolstered the defense. John Herron and Allan Kluber also turned in fine performances at left halfback and left fullback, respectively.

WRESTJLKNG The Friends' Central Wrestling Team, under the enthusiastic coaching of Mr. Edgerton, recovered from its defeats of previous years to highlight the winter sports season. The well-balanced team started off with a crushing victory over Friends' Select, a loss to Girard College, then a string of six victories over Germantown Friends', George School, Episcopal Academy, Perkiomen, Germantown Academy, and Valley Forge. Led by co-captains Bill Judson and Rick King, the team succeeded in gaining one of the few winning records of the '61- '62 season. The strength of the team was well distributed over the 12 weight classes. The lightweights were strengthened by the addition of first year men Peter Bleakley (95) and Tommy George (103) , both of whom demonstrated considerable ability. Returning lettermen Stu W etterholt ( 112) , Bill Young (120), and Rick King (127) presented brilliant performances in the remaining lightweights. Forming the middleweights were George Schnyder (133), Bill Judson (138), Dave Boyd (145), and Todd Makler (154), .who were consistent attributes to the team's victories. John Logan (165), Chris Woerner (175), and Bob Klaus (H .W.) formed the dependable heavyweights who,. more than once, saved the team from defeat. This season was marked with numerous firsts in the history of wrestling at Friends' Central. The team had its first victory over George School, acquired the first permanent wrestling room, the first winning season on a full schedule, and the first team that had to buy its own uniforms. Although the Varsity Squad is losing six lettermen next year, Mr. Edgerton has been building a strong J.V. with which to restore his Varsity to continue wrestling at F.C. in the fine tradition established this year.

This year the Girls' Varsity basketball team began practice early in January under the coaching of Mrs. Jackson and captain Diane Viguers. Seniors on the squad were forwards Diane Viguers and Ann Hayward. Guards were Betsy Bush, Lynn Grein, and Charlotte Herrmann. The girls had practice games with Ellis Country Day School and Girls' High before beginning their regular schedule with Agnes Irwin, Abington Friends', Shipley, Baldwin, Westtown. and Germantown Friends'. The team had both spirit and skill to aid them through each game. The season began with a victory in the Ellis game. Highlights of the season were the victory over undefeated Baldwin and the fifty point lead over Abington Friends'. Five seconds before the whistle in the -Baldwin game, a basket by Ann Hayward gave the winning point to Friends' Central. Constant practice and enthusiasm did much to make the team successful. The girls worked hard to set a new record for the number of wins. The season ended with an unforgettable game against the boys' basketball team. DIANE VIGUERS, Captain.

The 1961-1962 Friends' Central basketball team was blessed with many returning lettermen : Captain Fran Bradley, Mike Cohen, Bill Dean, George Lare, Todd Lieber, and George Macpherson. These veterans plus the newcomers to the team, Tom Dean, Larry Graves, Charlie Savournin, Rusty Taylor, and Bruce Yoskin, gave their new coach, Mr. Cherim, good material to try and break a long League losing streak which extended over the past five years. Mr. Cherim led his team to the victory, so long needed, on their first League outing. This first League game was highlighted by a record-shattering 61 foot shot by big Scott Toombs. The shot occurred at the end of the crucial first half. It arched high above the floor and fell cleanly through the basket. The ball hit the net with such an impact that q:tany fans wondered how it withstood the strain. This year's team was different from many previous teams in that one man alone was not consistently the high scorer. Every game was a team effort with a well-balanced scoring attac~ which was exemplified in the second Friends' Select game where the FC five had four men in double figures, and four others close behind. This was a team of which any school would have been proud. The boys were talented, well coached, and showed frequently that they would never quit. They beat Chestnut Hill Academy in the last minute and Moorestown Friends' in the last three seconds. The team finished the season with a respectable position in the Inter-Academic League for the first time in over five years. FRAN BRADLEY, captain.

BASEBAJLJL The 1962 Varsity baseball team was not hurt too severely by the loss of members of the Class of 1961 so the outlook was very bright at the time this page went to press. The team was coached by Mr. Groff and Mr. Westhaven and captained by short stop Bill Dean. With the experienced members of the Class of '62, the incoming sophomores, and most of all, the experience and ability of pitchers George Lare and Todd Lieber and catcher Fran Bradley, F. C. looked forward to being a contender for the Inter-ac championship.

"Cradle, cradle, cradle!" "Bend those knees!" Sore muscles, conditioning skills, and high spirits marked our 1962 Lacrosse season. Co-captains Betsy Bush and Sally Price led the team to victory as early as the 1961 Lacrosse Play Day at Lower Merion. Seniors Sally Clark, Lynn Grein, Lynne Tindle, Charlotte Herrmann, Kirk Harbison, Ann Hayward, Sally Price, and Betsy Bush have been the backbone of the team for two years.. The Juniors and other lower class members were invaluable players; and with their help, instead of a group of individuals, they became a well-coordinated, highspirited Lacrosse team.

The Varsity tennis team, led by seniors Dennis Linnehan and Mike Cohen, should have a very successful season as it tries to improve on last year's 7-2-1record. The team will play an enlarged schedule this year which will include about 12 different schools. The singles positions will be held down by co-captains Mike Cohen and Dennis Linnehan, Jim Baraff, and Bob Weinstein all of whom have had previous experience in Varsity competition. The F.C. doubles teams will include last year's No. 1 unit, Scott Davis and Marc Sherson. Alan Casnoff, Bruce Yoskin, Steve Jaeger, and Eckart Maegerlein will combine to form the second and third doubles teams. The Quakers, coached by Mr. McVickar, lost only two players from last year's team which won more matches than any other F.C. tennis team of recent years and should be very strong this year with a possibility of an undefeated season ..

Although the Girls' Tennis Team did not register high scores in the 1961 season, it turned in a record of spirited play and team unity of which it can· be proud. The first four contests on the schedule, matches with Abington Friends School, George School, Agnes Irwin School, and Mater Miseracordia, unfortunately were lost by Friends' Central. However a winning play in the George School and Miseracordia games by Edith Nicholson, a promising freshman, and a victory for Betsy Bush and Sally Price in the Miseracordia match, brought credit to the team. This year, supporting the team from the class of 1962 are singles players Diana Khinoy, Patricia Stanton, and Betty Johnson. Doubles partners are Betsy Bush and Sally Price, Diane Viguers and Virginia Brodhead, and Toy Wei! and lee Hillerson. Because of the higher spirit and greater experience, the Girls' Tennis Team hopes for a successful 1962 season.
