FOREWORD

The Olympics were regarded by the ancient Greeks as a celebration of national importance. Every four years the various Greek city-states joined together to hold t_hese athletic contests in honor of their gods. In time, the influence of the Olympics was felt in all facets of Greek life. The importance of the Olympics was so great that victory trophies brought back were considered the greatest of prizes; Olympic champions were idolized by their home states; and even wars were known to stop for the duration of the games. The ancient Greeks were the most cultured and civilized people of their time. They prized both the highly developed body and the highly developed .mind. The philosophy of Friends' Central School honors this concept: to develop not only the intellectual capacity and integrity of each student, but also to develop in them character and sportsmanship through athletics . Mens sara in corpore sano . The Class of 1960 leaves Friends' Centra I in a year which celebrates the 14th of the Modern Olympic games . These Modern Olympics were begun in an effort to improve international relations through friendly competition - an ambition which is shared by our school and the members of our class, We thus are in many ways closely tied to the Olympics, and for this reason we take them as our theme.

It was 1944. Roosevelt had won his fourth term; the war was to go on for a year; and at Friends' Central Peter Woerner (almost three years old) entered school beginning the history of the Class of 1960. Nancy Friedland came in the next year and our class went co-ed. No one new arrived for two years and meanwhile we took walks in Morris Park and received gold stars for napping. Jimmy Freeman made his entrance in 1946, and we began reading and had homework for the first time. In First Grade we had four new arrivals: Ed Buckalew, John McVickar, Richie Ulmer, and Susan Wenograd. Everyone feared Miss McMahon that year, and a couple of windows in our homeroom were broken. Frances Berger, Tony D'Aiessandro, and Dena Obus made their entrance in the second grade. We read thrilling sagas of Dick and Jane, began· writing, and ended the year with a gala picnic. The next year came and so did Bob Drayer, Bill Schaffer, and Bob Smith. Thumb-tacks were left lying on chairs and the coat closet became a place of punishment for bad boys. Ralph Horning and Bob Levin appeared in Fourth Grade. We had the Audubon Club, gangs, and an undefeated soccer team. Time was spent trading baseball cards and standing in the hall for punishment. Alberta Sivaton was new in Fifth Grade. We had an undefeated baseball team, took trips to museums, and gave a memorable performance of "The 13 Clocks." Paper airplanes and shoes were thrown out of windows and membership in the "Babylonian Club" was this year's punishment. It was now 1953 and in came Mary Deming, Jeanne Jackson, Peter Salzberg, Steve Savran, and Sandy Slevin. The

was divided into treaty organizations

and our math sections into "Racers," "Pacers," and "Trotters." Everyone played chess and we visited the airport and the shipyard. We left singing "Oklahoma" and "The

Animals Are Coming." With the influx of Phyllis Beck, Jerry Brown, Priscilla Brown, Trish D'Aionzo, Janice Decker, Judy Deemer, Sally Deshong, Pattie Ellis, Danny Jones, Wendy Miller, Haines Price, David Rosenman, Joanne Shelly, Betsy Surbeck, and Ladd Thomas in Seventh Grade we became the largest class ink the School's history and had three homerooms. Our teachers wondered how long it would be until we stopped getting in trouble- so did we. Judy Colish, Lois Maiman, Haines Price, Cathy Riccardi, and Fred Schmitt arrived in Eighth Grade. It was a year of parties and a football team which lost games 63-0 and 2-0, but beat Penn Charter. We ended Junior High with Ginger Arnold, Donny Briskman, Olivia Carpenter, Renee Fernon, Pat Hibbs, Lynn Huberman, Sue Phillips, Dick Sperry, Lynn Volckhausen and Sue Widmer. We did a play about the Duke of Dittendorten and Wyatt Earp, took a trip to New York, and put classmates on the Varsity hockey, football, wrestling, and baseball squads. In '57 Bruce Babcock, Peg Johnson, Frank Judson, Bill Lundgren, Vicky Madway, John McQuade, Mickey Milhous, Judy Rulon, Paul Seltzer, and Bruce Woodruff joined the Tenth Grade. The class had its first taste of senior high life and ran the successful Soph Hop "Spring Fever." Eleventh Grade saw the entrance of John Egnal, John Ferguson, Alex Markauskas, Nancy McAvoy, Nick Scull, Tom Shea, Elinor Whitelaw, and Louise Wilde. The class spilled into all facets of school life, gave a Junior Prom called "Quiet Village," and while in Washington, saw Hawaii made the 50th state. And now, joined by Guy DiCicco, Michael Schulte, and lnge Stark, we are seniors. After a sixteen-year span we look to the future. Our history is past and done withi our future awaits finding .

The Student Council started the academic year by sponsoring its annual Used Book Sale, arranging the two "Get Acquainted" parties, and selling refreshments at games . In the winter, the Council continued plans for a new building for student use, participated in the Woolman Hill Exchange program for student government associations throughout the East Coast, and arranged an exchange of Council executive members with the Overbrook School for the Blind. In the Spring, the Student Council also sponsored with the Service Committee, a dance entitled "Continental Journey." The Executive Committee was composed of: Mary Deming, president; Richard Ulmer, vice-president; Lynn Huberman, secretary; Robert Drayer, treasurer; Wendy Miller and Ladd Thomas, members-at-large. Large cartons overflowing with clothing, unique Christmas cards, weekend workcamp, and Carnival are but a few things representative of Friends' Central's Service Committee . The officers of the Service Committee are as follows : Olivia Carpenter, president; Ralph Horning , vice-president; and Peter Woerner, treasurer . This year the Race Relations and Social Service committees have become increasingly active. Chaired by Lois Maiman and Judi Deemer respectively, these committees have participated in the UNESCO Drive , planned various films which were shown to the student body, and organized trips to help the American Friends Service Committee pack clothing for the Algerian refugees. GIRLS' A.A.

The Girls' Athletic Association led by Sandy Slevin, president, and Sally Deshong and Prissy Brown, vice presidents, managed a Lost and Found in the girls' locker room, opened an athletic store for girls, made posters for games, and gave the annual Mother-Daughter banquet. The Boys' Athletic Association with Frank Judson, president, Peter Woerner, vice president, and Guy DiCicco, secretary-treasurer, gave its annual Father-Son banquet and joined with the Girls' A.A. to give a dance in April.

Saddled with a full lnter-Ac League schedule the soccer team ended up the season with a 2-11-2 log. In the League the team's 1-l 0-l record was good enough for a sixth place finish. Goalie Steve Savran was placed ori the All-lnter-Ac second team while halfbacks John McQuade and Co-captain Alex Markauskas received Honorable Mention. Other seniors on the starting team were Bruce Babcock, co-captain, right wing; Ralph Horning, halfback; and John Egnal, center forward. The squad was also aided by seniors Tony D'Aiessandro, John McVickar, and Bob Smith.

This year's Varsity Hockey squad, captained by Wendy Miller and coached by Mrs . Florence Jackson, ended the season with four wins and five losses. On the forward line leading the attack were Dena Obus, Lynn Huberman, Nancy Friendland, and Peggy Johnson. Backing up the forwards were Pat Ellis and Sandy Slevin. Fullbacks Wendy Miller and Sally Deshong could be depended on to defend the goals to the last; and Alberta Sivaton and Elinor Whitelaw did an outstanding job stopping the balls. Phyllis Beck, the team's enthusiastic manager, also did an outstanding job. The fine coaching of Mrs. Jackson kept team spirit and the will to win strong and did much to make the team successful.

The Varsity football team, led by Co-captains Peter Woerner and Bruce Woodruff, racked up a 6-2 log last fall. The two losses were to Episcopal Academy by a 24-18 score, and to Bryn Athyn by a 7-0 count. An undefeated record was not out of the question for this team of fine all-around first team strength, but a weak bench and a few bad breaks prevented it. Pete Woerner was unable to play in the loss to Episcopal. His defensive halfback slot was riddled for three TO tosses in his absence . Possibly the best team performance was in the opener against Malvern Prep. The Friars had a powerful squad, which went on to tie for first place in the lnterac . But they were no match for the fired-up Blue and Gray that day . A stiff defense coupled with a ball-controlling offense held the visitors scorefess in a 8-0 F.C. victory. At the end of the season Bob Drayer and Don Briskman received the Fahlen Award for the most valuable players. Bob and Donny were placed on the second and third all Main Line teams respectively while Pete Woerner, Guy DiCicco and Ladd Thomas received Honorable Mention . End, Frank Judson and center, Richie Ulmer were honored as the most improved players on the squad . Other senior squad members were: Guards, Haines Price, and Fred Schmitt; Tackles , Daniel Jones, and Dick Sperry; Ends , John Ferguson, Bob Levin and Mickey Milhous ; and Backs, Jim Freeman , Peter Salzberg, and Paul Seltzer. Bill Schaffer, manager, and Tom Shea helped to keep the team 's spirit high.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL In December the Rex Gym was filled with excited girls who had turned out for basketball practice under their new coach, Mrs. Jackson. With the loss of the entire first team last June, Mrs. Jackson and Captain Sandra Slevin set to work to get the team ready for the first game against Merion Academy. Returning lettermen were forwards: Sandra Slevin, Lynne Iverson, Debbie Richards, Anne Hayward, and Sally Deshong. Guards were Wendy Miller, Gay Sharpless, and Joan Fleischhauer. The team also played Shipley, Baldwin, Agnes Irwin, Westtown, and Sacred Heart.

BOYS' BASKETBALL The Varsity basketball team suffered through a poor season. With only one game remaining, the team was winless in the League and had won only four games over all. These victories came against Byrn Athn, Chestnut Hill, Germantown Friends, and Moorestown Friends. A bright spot on Mr. Kirk's team was captain Mickey Milhous who received the Most Valuable Player Award in the Friends' Schools Christmas Tournament where the team finished second . Seniors on the squad were Don Briskman, John Egnal, John Ferguson, Ralph Horning, Bob Levin, Peter Salzberg, Richie Ulmer, and Peter Woerner.

WRESTLING With an excellent chance to win their three remaining meets (Girard, Germantown Academy, and Germantown Friends) the 1960 Varsity wrestling team seemed assured of Friends' Central's second winning wrestling season, and a first division finish in the lnter-Ac. This year victories came over Friends' Select, Overbrook School for the Blind, and for the first time Episcopal, Perkiomen , and Valley Forge. Losses were inflicted by Bryn Athyn , George School, Haverford Prep , Malvern , and Penn Charter. BASEBALL The 1960 baseball team with the addition of an experienced coach, Mr . Frank Groff, is looking forward to a fine season. Despite the loss of four starters, F.C. has an excellent chance to improve upon last years 6 win 6 loss third place League finish.
