The theme of our yearbook is music. In choosing this theme, the Class of '57 attempts to depict the close harmony that we have experienced during our years at Friends' Central. This atmosphere of harmony could not have been achieved without the guidance of teachers and advisors. With their aid and the wide scale of academic and extra- curricular activities available to us, we have come to realize that responsible citizenship means responsibility in terms of the community, not just in terms of our own individual needs. We have come to realize, too, that people and nations must work together. Friends' Central has made us understand the need of responsibility and cooperation. It has set an intellectual and moral pattern, which should enable us to grow into productive maturity. The record of our years of growing is to be found in these - "Our Notes."

f. c. major As the curtain rises on this evening's performance, a distinguished ensemble presents itself to the audience an ensemble that has been twelve years in the making. Tuning up in the three-year-old section Was Sue Carlen, who played solo for a year. Then a trio was formed by the addition of Gary Fields and Richard Klein. They were joined the next year by Richard Bookbinder, on the horn, and Pat Myers, and then by Steve Johnson in the first grade. This sextet was in such demand that they spent three years playing together. As soon as entrance into the group was again made possible, Herman Rosenberger quickly took advantage of the opportunity and joined it in fourth grade. Three more members were found in Nancy Gruber, Sidney Horrocks, and Heidi Zimmerli, all adding their talent to the orchestra. Visiting performer Pete Drayer played so well that he was asked to become a permanent member. Fresh out of foreign conservatories, a large, exciting group joined the orchestra at the beginning of its seventh season. The talents of the new members varied. Busy working out the many details of the behind-the-scenes production were Beth Leiby, Tony Seiver, and Carole Cowell, with Larry Spitz dimming the house lights. Elizabeth Daldy not only worked with the public relation staff, but occupied the flutist's chair as well. Leader Sarah Hardin rehearsed with tenor Roger Clisby, soprano Gaby Schwarz, and atonal Bette Lee Jarvis. Rose Pepp walked in with a huge bouquet, honoring the entire orchestra for this successful season.

To add to the versatility of the group, Marianne Miller, Ralph Scotney, and Bill Schwartz were asked to sign contracts. Andy Hayward also came in that year. The ninth section of the orchestra was composed largely of females: Abby Huberman, Edie Stephens, and Sue Schultz had already given several performances together. Bette Lee Jarvis returned from her year-long tour in time to extend a welcome to Sarah Staats and Helen Ehrich. Roberta Sheen accepted the offer of first organist, and she and Gretchen Young undertook the financial worries of the orchestra. Finally, leaders Jack Lilly and Andy Stifter, batons raised, took their places. The last large group joined the orchestra in its tenth season, Hank Zoob checked the publicity photographs which Jill Banks held. Barbara Davis, Flora Gladeck, Jean Stewart, and Donna Foulke sang as they painted a backdrop under the watchful eye of Weezie Lundgren. Ann Tolson and Curt Pontz joined the orchestra with Steve Cozen, master of the wind instruments. Also with the orchestra this year was the visiting German artist, Hans Huber. Bryan Pokras, Frank Richards, Lilla Hepworth, and Les Miller added their music to that of the orchestra in eleventh grade, and the organization again played host to a visiting artist, Heidi Schreiber. On foreign tours this year were Rose Pepp and Nancy Gruber. It takes 52 chairs to seat the orchestra as it appears tonight. The final four were not filled until this 12th year of performances. Jim Pittinos and Jack Bunting joined the group from orchestras near-by; Karen Patterson added Western songs to the repertoire, and Joyce McAvoy brought her cow bells. Like any orchestra, this one has some sections which excel in tone and quality, and some assume leadership in tempo. But each member has had an important contribution to make, and all have performed well. Tonight the audience hears the last number they are to play together. After this performance they separate,having played their last encore.

CUM LAUDE Four members of the Senior Class were elected to the Cum Laude Society in January of 1957. As recipients of the keys of the society, the students pledged themselves to "continue the pursuit of learning and to make wisdom and truth" the guiding factors of their life. The pew Cum Laude members are: Elizabeth Daldy, Gary Fields, Abby Huberman, and Richard Klein. The Cum Laude Society was founded in 1906 as the secondary school equivalent · of Phi Beta Kappa. lt was felt that outstanding scholastic achievement should be recognized on the secondary school level as it is in college. There are now 125 chapters in the United States, concentrated mostly in the East. Friends' Central has had its chapter since 1928 and has elected 254 students to membership.

stu~ent council The Student Council, under the leadership of Steve Cozen, president; Gary Fields and Pete Drayer, co-vice-presidents; Elizabeth Daldy, secretary; and Bobby Long, treasurer, contributed much toward uniting the student body and strengthening the school. Besides conducting activities connected with the running of the school; such as, selling used books, taking care of the Rec Room, managing the Lost and Found, and conducting the Friday morning assemblies, the Council brightened the social life of Friends' Central with its "Get Acquainted" parties and canteens. In addition to the regularly programmed canteens, the Student Council held a special dance in February with music by the famous Local #77 of the Musicians Union. The Honor Committee of the Council gained considerable strength; the students showed real concern in improving many areas of school life. Friends' Central participation in the Inter-Ac Student Council increased this year. Jill Banks was elected its secretary, and in May the Inter-Ac Formal was held at Penn Charter In all of its endeavors the Student Council was constantly behind the student body.

This year the Service Committee has tried, through its various sub-committees, to promote greater understanding between the students here at Friends' Central and the people of the world. The members of the Work Camp Committee have been enthusiastic supporters of the weekend programs which enable students to get to know less fortunate families through sharing physical labor with them. The Affiliation Committee has worked hard in promoting international relations between Friends' Central students and those of Graefelfing, our affiliated school in Germany. Here at home the Friendship Committee gave parties for underprivileged children, and several of its members worked as nurses' aides at Lankenau Hospital. The money raised for the Community Chest Drive this year went to the United Fund, The American Friends' Service Committee, and the Cancer Fund. The clothing collected went, as usual, to the Friends' Service Committee. The Service Committee ended its year with a very successful and entertaining Carnival. The money made was put into the Affiliation Fund. The officers, Roger Clisby, president; Patricia Myers, vice president; Mary Beth Leiby, secretary; and Nancy Carlen, treasurer, were very pleased with the cooperation they have received from the members of the Service Club.

Friends' Central school life has been greatly enriched this year by its three goodwill ambassadors. Two are Friends' Central seniors who spent last .summer abroad, and the third is our exchange student from Germany. Friends' Central was again very fortunate in 1957 to have an exchange student from Graefelfing, Erik Guthy. Erik was a member of the Junior class . Through his friendliness and under-· standing he contributed to the life of Friends' Central and to the good will between nations. Hank Zoob participated in a Friends International Voluntary Work Camp in England last summer with students of many nationalities . . He also visited Graefelfing, our affiliate school in Germany. Pete Drayer was the recipient of an American Field Service Scholarship and went to France under their Summer Abroad program staying with two French families near Paris. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:15 during the past year some 25 students filed into the Music Room, and for the ensuing 45 minutes the Friends' Central School Orchestra was "in rehearsal." The orchestra was conducted by Sigmund Hering, a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra. During the three years under his baton, the group made steady progress. The orchestra played from time to time in school assemblies; at Christmas, they gave a joint performance w1th the Chorus; this spring they played at the instrumental recital. The orchestra was composed of both Upper and Lower School students. The group of e ightee n boys pe rformed on many occasions during the year, including the Boys ' Athle tic As soc iation Banque t, the Homecoming Day Banque t, the Christmas As se mbl y, and the "Wizard of Oz " production. Possibly the high light of the s ea son was at the Boy s ' Athl e ti c Association Banquet when the group introduced a stirring new Frie nds' Ce ntral song, writte n by Mr. David B. Zoob and his son, Henry, '57. Seniors played a vital part in the "Late Double Eight Plus Two" this ye ar. Roger Clisby was the group's stellar first te nor. Jim Pittinos organized a quartet consisting of Roge r Clisby, John Free ze , Alan MacLean , and himself. This group turned out some fine harmonizing.

chorus This year under the direction of Miss Ernestine Hoff, the chorus has been very active. They presented the Christmas entertainment, a program of foreign and American carols. This performance included not only the chorus but also the orchestra and the boys quartet of Roger Clisby, John Freeze, Jim Pittinos, and Alan MacLean. In addition, the chorus practiced hard and long during the winter term in preparation for the "Wizard of Oz." Besides helping in the production of this show, the chorus also participated in some musical excerpts of the "Wizard" for the radio show, "Young Pennsylvanians" on WFLN. The seniors who have played an active part in the chorus are: Roger Clisby, Carole Cowell, Elizabeth Daldy, Pete Drayer, Donna Foulke, Jack Lilly, Jim Pittinos, Rose Pepp, Gaby Schwarz, Gretchen Young, and Hank Zoob.

The Drama Minor was the magnet for all Senior High students interested in improving their acting ability. This group offered an opportunity to study scenes from well-known plays. Students from the Drama Minor displayed their talents in several assemblies. Scenes from such plays as "Mary of Scotland," "Solid Gold Cadillac," "The Valiant," "Born Yesterday" and "Blithe Spirit" were presented. The Drama Minor is relatively young in F. C. S. 's list of activities, ~ and Mr. Burgess feels the group has proven very successful for those genuinely interested in drama. The senior members were Jill Banks, Steve Cozen, Gary Fields, Karen Patterson, Edith Stephens, and Andy Stifler.

news The Friends' Central News, founded in 1932, and now under the skillful advisorship of Mrs. Woerner, records the various activities of the school for pupils, parents, friends, and alumni. The staff is composed of those pupils who choose journalism for their minor subject. · The job of putting out this newspaper monthly requires the cooperation of the entire staff to carry out the many duties which must be accomplished, ranging from reporting the news, to writing it, to making up the printed page. The production of "Our Notes" has been the result of the coordinated efforts of the elected staff, the faculty advisors, and the members of the Senior Class. Since early last spring, the staff, under editors Bryan Pokras and Hank Zoob, worked industriously towards the final completion of the 1957 Yearbook. This capable staff included Elizabeth Daldy, art editor; Andrew Stifter, business manager; Susan Carlen, photography editor; Jill Banks, candids editor; and Flora Gladeck, advertisingeditor. In addition, each senior contributed in some way to the work of the Yearbook .

The Boys' and the Girls' Athletic Associations met separately and jointly throughout the year to discuss and plan events concerning the sports program. The Girls' A.A., with Abby Huberman as president, Page Tindle as vice president, and Joan Shore as secretary, was very active this year sponsoring the cheerleaders and being responsible for buses to football games. They also sold Blue and Gray "six-footers" raising $40 for the Building Fund.ln conjunction with the Boys' A.A., the Girls vs. Boys hockey and basketball games raised additional money for the new building. The Boys' A.A. this year, with Andy Stifler as president, Andy Hepburn as vice president, and Gary Fields as secretary, formulated a set of rules concerning student responsibilities in the new gym and locker room. Some of the big events of the year for both Associations were their annual banquets. The Father-and-Son Banquet had the most successful turnout in Friends' Central's history. Gerald Timmons of the Temple School of Dentistry was the guest speaker. At the Girls' A.A. Banquet, the fall sports letters and awards were presented and following the dinner was the Varsity vs. Alumnae basketball game.

sports awards At Friends' Central several awards are presented yearly to the outstanding boy and girl athletes. This year the boys' awards were presented at the annual Father-and-Son Banquet on December 7. Jack Lilly, a.1 excellent lineman, and Andy Stifler, co-captain and quarterback, received the Fahlen Trophy. This award is given annually to any member or members of the Varsity Football team who have shown the greatest proficiency, leadership, and sportsmanship during the football season. It was the first year that the award has been given to two boys. Two other awards honored Bob Kindred and Dick Thomas for outstanding play on the soccer team. Bob was selected as the outstanding player on the squad, and Dick was runnerup. The trophies were presented to the school by the Interac champions of 1947. The Friends' Central White Blazer award was presented to three girls of the Class of 1957. The recipient of this award must be a girl who has made four Varsity teams in her sophomore or junior year, and who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and school citizenship. Hockey captain Sarah Hardin was the fourth girl in the history of the Blazer Award to win her blazer in her sophomore year. Nancy Gruber, lacrosse co-captain, and Roberta Sheen, basketball captain, both received their blazers in their junior year.

lacrosse This year's lacrosse team, under the coaching of Miss Helen McMahon and the leadership of co-captains Sue Carlen and Nancy Gruber, practiced long and hard in preparation for their season with Baldwin, Lower Merion, Irwin, Shipley, Sanford, Swarthmore, and Marple Newtown. The team had a successful season with the help of returning lettermen, Nancy Carlen, Sue Carlen, Nancy Gruber, Sarah Hardin, Marge McCullough, Roberta Sheen, and Joan Shore. Those receiving their gqld lacrosse sticks for playing three years on the Varsity first team were Sarah Hardin, a senior, and Nancy Carlen, a sophomore.

This year the Friends' Central Soccer team emerged with a 6-3-1 record, the best since 1948. Led by co-captains and leading scorers Hank Zoob and Burt Fowler, the F.C. hooters played heads up soccer all season. Key victories were a close 2-0 win against Wilmington Friends and a come-back 4-2 victory over a previously undefeated Phelps School. Standouts on Coach Howley's team were Bob Kindred, center halfback; Dick Thomas, goalie; and Frank Richards, fullback. Other members of the team were Stu Egnal, Erik Guthy, Reed Bush, Steve Reynolds, Tony Seiver, Ozzie Cresson, George Horwitz, Steve Johnson, Herman Rosenberger, Andy Hayward, Paul Nowicki, Haig Yardumian, Ralph Scotney, and George Parshall. Next year's prospects appear even brighter, for only three of the eleven starters are departing. If the squad can retain this year's spirit and add a more effective scoring punch, a winning season is insured .

The hard work of the 1956 Varsity hockey team resulted in a victorious season with five wins and three losses. This year the team was coached by Mrs. Rene Berdelli, a newcomer to the Girls Physical Education Department. Captain Sarah Hardin held the crucial defense position of center halfback, working with Sue Carlen, Sarah Newton and Sue Price next year's captain. Fullbacks Marge McCullough and Page Tindle, with alternating goalies Nancy Carlen and Jean Painter, completed the backfield.

a The football team's 1956 record of 4-3-1 was not a true indication of the squad's success. Nine F.C. starters were forced to miss at least one game due to injuries, and the only game that the Kirkmen played at full strength was the opener. The Blue and Gray eleven opened the season with a 28-6 victory over Chestnut Hill Academy, but suffered consecutive defeats at Bryn Athyn, 13-6, and Malvern, 14-7. The team bounced back with a 13-0 victory over George School. After playing a scoreless tie with Williamson Trade, the upsetminded F. C. eleven lead Penn Charter at half-time, 13-7, only to see Charter score two second-half touchdowns for a 21-13 victory. The squad got back on the winning trail with a 19-6 win over Germantown Friends'; and a 13-6 victory over Archmere Academy in the season's finale enabled the team to have a winning record. Seniors Jack Lilly, Bryan Pokras, Steve Cozen, LesMiller, Jack Bunting, Pete Drayer, Jim Pittinos, Dick Bookbinder, Dick Klein, Bill Schwartz, and co-captains Andy Stifler and Gary Fields will be lost next yearto coaches Kirk and Burgess. Standouts on the team who will be back are Milt Russell, Kirk Foulke, Al MacLean, Fred Harshaw, Andy Hepburn, and Chip Ralston, Despite the departure of a great many seniors, the present crop of juniors and sophomores has the potential to develop into a strong team.

Under the competent coaching of Mrs. Berdelli and Miss Campbell and the spirited leadership of Captain Roberta Sheen, the 1957 girls' basketball team had a very good season. The returning Blue and Gray lettermen, Sarah Hardin, Marge McCullough, Sue Price, andRoberta Sheen were helped by the addition of Sarah Newton, Karen Patterson, and Sally Reynolds to the squad. The second team was sparked by seniors Carole Cowell, Mary Louise Lundgren, and Joyce McAvoy. Starting out the season by beating Abington Friends' by a score of 41 to24, the girls went on to win two more victories, defeating Stevens 38 to 27 and Friends' Select 48 to 20. This winning spirit carried the team through a very successful season, playing Shipley, Baldwin, Westtown and Sacred Heart.

The Blue and Gray Varsity five had a 3-7 record at the midway point in the 195657 season The squad had suffered five defeats in the lnter-ac League without a win. Coach Groff's team lost its opener to the Swarthmore College J.V.'s;butthenwon consecutive victories from Friends' Select, Chestnut Hill Academy, and Moorestown Friends'. A loss to Wilmington Friends marked the first of the six straight setbacks which the Groffmen were to suffer. Germantown Academy, Haverford School, Episcopal, Malvern, and Penn Charter all handed F. C. defeats. The rest of the club's schedule consisted of return engagements with each of the lnter-ac teams, and outside games with George School and Bryn Athyn. As this article went to press, captain Andy Stifler was leading the team in scoring. Other seniors on the team were Hank Zoob, Curt Pontz, Jack Bunting, Jack Lilly, and Jim Pittinos. Seniors Steve Cozen and Gary Fields were both lost to the team due to injuries. Stu Egnal, Bob Kindred, Al MacLean, Chip Ralston, and Milt Russell were the juniors who helped make up the rest of the squad.

The 1957 Varsity baseball team, losing only four members of last year's squad, hopes to improve upon the 6-8 record of the '56 team. As this copy goes to press in late February, Captain Bryan Pokras will spearhead the team at first base. Steve Cozen and Andy Stifter will play short stop and third base respectively, although Jack Bunting might give Andy. a battle for his position. Pete Drayer, or newcomer Chip Ralston, will probably hold down the "keystone~ sack. Top man on the pitching staff appears to be sophomore Bob Long, and Milt Russell has the inside track on the catching position. In addition, several of the reserves from last year's squad will be ready to take regular positions on the Varsity. Among them are outfielders Dick Bookbinder, Les Miller, Bill Schwartz, and Bert Fowler; infielders Dick Klein, Andy Hepburn, and Bob Flynn; and pitchers Jack "Cilly, Curt Pontz, and newcomer Dick Thomas. This year F. C. has a larger squad of ~xperienced players than in recent seasons. If coaches Kirk and Andrews can find a good second line pitcher and develop a balanced hitting attack, the 1957 squad should have a successful season.

Even though the team is losing these seniors the prospects for next year's team look bright with Nancy Carlen, Margery Freedman, Lynnette Hodge, Betsy Mackey, Betsy Markland, Margery McCullough, Sarah Newton, and Joan Shore, all letter winners.

Friends' Central's 1957 boys' tennis team has three of last year's lettermen returning: Captain Hank Zoob, Stu Egnal, and Bob Freedman. Other members of last year's squad who will back are Andy Hayward and Herman Rosenberger. Coach McVickar's squad faces the same rough schedule as last year, having matches scheduled with such teams as Germantown Academy, Malvern, Prendergast, and Bryn Athyn. But in view of the steady improvement shown by the squad last year, and the fact that the nucleus of . the team is returning, the prospects for a winning season appear bright. The girls' tennis team, coached by Eliza Blackburn is also developing ability.Returning lettermenLynnette Hodge, Abby Huberman, Sarah Newton, and Joan Shore are scheduled to play singles and doubles against Baldwin, Shipley, and Ellis.

This year's wrestling team broke a three year losing streak by defeating Germantown Academy, 25-20. The "grapplers~ lost matches to Bryn Athyn, St. Andrew's School, Penn Charter, and Overbrook Blind School, with matches still remaining with Germantown Friends, George School, Girard College, and Episcopal Academy. The squad had a new coach, Harry Hoffman, who came to Friends' Central after having coached freshmen wrestling at West Chester State Teacher's College. Members of the Blue and Gray wrestling team were captain Dick Bookbinder, Kirk Foulke, Erik Guthy, Dick Thomas, Chuck Ensor, Haines Price, Ladd Thomas, and Chris Woerner. The team was seriously hampered by the loss of Pete Drayer, Fred Harshaw, and Sergei Bogojavlensky due to injuries. Only Pete Drayer and Dick Bookbinder are graduating, leaving coach Hoffman with several experienced wrestlers to form the nucleus of next year's team.

friends' central's new arts and science building, october, 1956 The new Arts and Science building, designed by internationally known architect Vincent Kling, is a part of Frie nds'Central's ten-year modernization plan . The building mcludes a combination le cture room and che mistry-physics lab, a workshop, and a studio for plastic and graphic arts. Later there will be a greenhouse attached to the biology lab and an art allery for the Schools permanent collection of Philadelphia artists. Ground was broken June 12,1956 and a dedication ce.lcmony was held the following April when the building was finally r eady for occupancy.
