" As the class of 1955 looks back, its years at Friends' Central may seem to be symbolized by Time: times of work and play; moments of frustration and hope; golden moments of friendship and joy. These times have built up to form the tradition of our life at school, a rich tradition to prepare and guide us in the years to come. As our final moments at F. C. are ticking oH, we realize what all these years have led to: a development of high values and ideals, of standards of excellence with which we are starting out to contribute our best to the world. These values and ideals will be our foundation in the years to come, when the days here at school will have receded into memory.

The Class of 1955 in its RECORD would like to pay a particular tribute to Berenice Woerner, who has constantly sought to help us to recognize ourselves as individuals and to develop to our fullest potentialities. Through her personal interest in all our achievements and failures, we have come to know her as an understanding and faithful friend, as well as an excellent teacher. Round-the-clock the Seniors had a busy and exciting year. Leading the school activities were: Sally Deming, Student Council president; Lyn Bidgood, president of the Service Club; Anne Nusbaum and Bill Gartner, as presidents of the Girls' and Boys' A. A. Middy Minster is still talking of her exciting trip to Mexico as a Student Abroad. Marcy Henry and Margie Tarrant co-edited the Yearbook. Many of us were involved in " Roberta," the Senior High musical production. Our final year was indeed the best and as graduation came nearer, the class drew closer together to more fully enjoy the last wonderful days. "Nicky Freeman, stop flirting with those little girls!" Thus the first minute of Time was marked off when Nicky Freeman, in kindergarten, began the class of '55. The little hand had scarcely moved to One before a green German kiddy car arrived, driven by our blonde friend Fred Merz. As the hour-hand on the clock of Time reached Two, F.C.'s peace was shattered by the booming voice of Linda Johnson. "Middy," she roared, "What are you doing?" "South of the Border, down Me-hi-co way" was the melodious response. As the clock struck Three, Anne Nusbaum, our ball of fire and bundle of pep joined us. The only entrance mad~ at Four was by Pat Hopkins, who of course refused to be upstaged! Elliot Snow screeched to a stop in his blue Ford scooter to herald the Fifth hour of our time at F.C. Barbara Jess was overheard chatting with one of her classmates-"Meanwhile, down at the farm . . .'' Sue Souder arrived that year, too-her few freckles adding spice to the class. Six bells, and in walked four new brighteyed students. Mayer Schnyder {better known as "Dude"), our future boy soprano, had already struck up a friendship with Bill Gartner, our ambassador from Margate. ·Sally Deming trailed in behind the boys, her infectious laughter regaling everyone. Last but not least in this extensive parade came Sallie "Crewy Lou" Whitesell. the giant of

the class. The big moment came when the clock struck Seven. We were then a part of the Upper School. One of the first arrivals was Helen DeOrsay, class fortune teller and general swami. Close on her heels came Donna Hayes and Ruth Stubbs begging answers to their deepest problems. Dave Hardin came hopping into Room 32, Mr. Harvey's den, with a carrot behind his ear, and to our list of class characters we added Colin Dickson, who came rushing in with a "Zog" on his head. "Hi-Y'all!" came from tall. black-haired Margie Tarrant, our "Georgia peach.'' Tony Hudock, Mr. Small's pride and joy, arrived; and soon after, Joe Borneman our handsome "Hansel" appeared. Bonnie Boardman, "The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane" and Joy Hinton {who left her horse at home) arrived before the class began. "There are still more to come," Dick "Moneybags" Spillman, our class treasurer, assured us. Sure enough, in walked Mike Darcy, our radical comrade, and Karl "Ozark Ike" Bopp from Drexel Hill. Marion Appel, {a real peach of a girl) came in with Ted "Lightnin' " Clisby, our fleet-footed boy from Conshohocken. The Eighth hour announced the arrival of Dick "Silent Cal" Blank and Ruth Jarvis, the mailman's friend. Madge Shore spent her first day helping Ted Riccardi, who was stuck to the piano stool by an old pack of Dentyne gum. Kathy Lare, our song bird, joined us a little late that year. A singing engagement no doubt!

Nine o'clock struck and Tom Pugh roared up in his "Jezebel" almost running over Gail First - black hair and big brown eyes. No wonder! ... Mary-Ellen Kirkpatrick, future interpreter for the U.N., came in on the heels of Allan Mackey, the human adding machine. Bob "Krudbud" Creskoff had a year with Mrs. Benner he'll never forget. Miriam Repp was an early bird. She came to practice "Where's Charlie" for the Canteen on Friday night. Bobbie Zilling was on hand to give one of her great parties which Jane Starrett decorated. Last but not least came Marcy Henry. Dashing in, she was heard to exclaim "Yearbook meeting at lunchtime!" It seemed no time at all until we were sophomores. The clock struck Ten and the largest part of our time at F.C. had ticked by. Esther Moore danced in with Dean Polites close by to snap her picture. Bruce Miller, joke-teller deluxe, came to humor the aging class. Peggy Roatch ducked in wide-eyed

and short of breath. "Where can I hide? Miss Blackburn's after me!" Frank Knipe in his leapord skin wrestling suit, stood in the doorway flexing his muscles, while Nancy Ives gaped in naive astonishment. The clock struck Eleven and out popped the cuckoo- Jayne Tolson. What had we ever done without her? Joy Becker appeared then, too, with her bow and arrow over her arm. Soon after came Dan Egan. "Where's Mr. Pittman?" he asked Doug Lauck, who came in wearing a "grease-monkey's" suit. Toby Walters walked in bouncing a soccer ball. and Meg Whitelaw followed, late as usual from her ride on the Paoli local. The hourglass turned for the last time and we were seniors. We had only two new additions to our class this year. John "Tiny" Foster and Ted Pounds came to play football and join in other class activities. Only too soon it seems that the year had ended and we were ready to graduate.

Full of importance, with nary a care, Sally Deming has money to spare. Tony Hudock too, will win success. Some day they'll shine with true greatness.

This has been an exciting year for the Juniors led by Bob Gartner, president, and vice-president Nan Fetter. Highlights of the year were our class trip to Williamsburg, Virginia and the acquiring of our school rings. Debby Gay! and Lydia Vickers left in January for Mexico as Students Abroad. The News was co-edited by Nan Fetter and Bonnie Gross . Nan Fetter, Alan Freeman, Margie Miller, Winnie Repp, Hank Richman and Barry Tague served on the Student Council. Nan Fetter won her white blazer for outstanding sports ability and placed second in the regional contest of the "Voice of Democracy" contest. The year was topped off perfectly by the Junior Prom.

The class of '57 pulled through a tough year in fashion worthy of their talents. Sports wise these talents include Varsity football. played by Steve Cozen, Gary Fields, Bill Pinkstone and Andy Stifler. Varsity soccer was helped by Hans Huber, Randy Teaf and Hank Zoob. Sue Carlen, Sarah Hardin, Roberta Sheen, and Wendy Hoover played Varsity hockey. Ours is a versatile class: activities range from chorus, orchestra, and "Roberta" in which Gary Fields played a lead, to dancing, the News and the Service Club where we are represented by Marianne Miller, Flora Gladeck, Beth Leiby, Helen Ehrich and Betsy Jenney. Almost everyone in the class participated in plans for a terrific Soph Hop. Representing the sophomores on the Student Council were Elizabeth Daldy, Pete Drayer, Gary Fields, Sarah Hardin and Wendy Hoover. Leading the class this year are president. This year has been an exciting and successful one for the freshman class. The highlight of the year came when Hacob Simidian from Iran joined with us as a member of our class. The freshmen made a large contribution to the field of sports. Fred Harshaw played Varsity football; Bert Fowler and Herman Fickenscher earned their letters on the Varsity soccer team . Bob Freedman, Brian DePalma and Steve Khinoy played on the newly organized chess team. Representing the girls, Marge McCullough, Jean Painter and Page Tindle were on the Varsity hockey squad. Marge scored again as the only freshman on the Varsity basketball team. The class gave two parties worthy of note. A successful class party and a Christmas party for some of the city's underprivileged children were both aided by homeroomteachers Mrs. Reifsnyder and Mr. Burgess. We were led this year by Bob Freedman, president; Brian DePalma, vicepresident; Barbara Ritter and Lynne Weisman, secretaries; and Tam Jefferis and Andy Hepburn, treasurers.

The Council had a very successful year under the direction of Sally Deming, president. and Miriam Repp, vice-president. Council business affairs and finances were handled by Bonnie Boardman, secretary, and Allan Mackey, treasurer. Mr. Burrowes, faculty advisor, was always on hand to guide and help the Council. In September they gave the annual "Get Acquainted" parties for the senior and junior high. Student buses for several "away" football games were chartered by the Council and refreshments were sold at the home games. In cooperation with the Home and School Association, the Council also purchased one thousand balloons with • the school seal stamped on them, to be sold at appropriate school functions. The Student Council planned and decorated the "mitten tree" in the front hall at

Christmas time and presented the school library with a new desk and several reference books. During the year, the Council gave three Friday night canteens for the senior high. Through the efforts of Miriam Repp and Toby Walters, Friends' Central participated in the Inter-Ac Council. The Council was in charge of Friday morning assembles throughout the year and tried to present to the students a varied and interesting program along with the necessary school news. In March a party was given to introduce the new Council president and vice-president. Council committees doing a competent job throughout the year were: Refreshment. Publicity, Lost and Found, Bible, and Door Holding and Safety.

The aims of the Service Club this year were to promote a greater interest within the student body, and a greater accomplishment within the various committees as well as to further international relations. The Affiliation Committee under the chairmanship of Helen DeOrsay promoted a greater understanding among people both at home and abroad. Students attended the "Schwenksville Conference" and "The Week of Urban Problems." Affiliation was continued with Graefelfing, our affiliated school in Germany. The only drive held during the year was the Community Chest, which netted $766 .52. The Carnival was made a success by the participation of every class in the activities. "Skit Night" made an interesting and humorous end lor an eventful day. Students did volunteer work at Lanke-

nau Hospital and gave a party for children from the "Neighborhood Guild," as a part of the Friendship Committee headed by Linda Esslinger. Interest in workcamps increased; many students participated in these very worthwhile weekends. The Clothing Drive Committee collected clothes for underprivileged people of various countries. Hans Huber, our affiliate student from Graefelfing, with the help of last year's Carnival proceeds, studied with us at Friends' Central and helped to further our appreciation of international relations. The Service Club functioned this year under the leadership of Lyn Bidgood, president; Susan Souder, vice-president; Gail First, secretary; David Hardin, treasurer; and Mr. Emerson, faculty adviser.

of them sang of romance and sorrow in one of the most memorable plays of recent years. The entire production, under the direction of Mr. Burgess, was a masterpiece. Music and dancing rounded out the show making "Roberta" an outstanding performance.

che>rus Under the direction of Miss Hoff, this year the senior high chorus has participated in a number of activities. At Christmas time the ninth grade girls, as well as a small group from the senior chorus, cheered patients at the Lankenau Hospital by caroling through the halls. The chorus also participated in the Christmas assembly program, which was given in conjunction with the senior art history class. The art class presented four tableaux, for which the chorus provided the background

music. In February, they took part in the production of the senior high musical, Ro-

berta. The chorus has operated under the leadership of the chorus council, whose four members are Kathy Lare, Sieta VanZanten, Barton DePalma, and Ed Rummel. This council helps in choosing music to be performed and in maintaining discipline during rehearsals. Marti Graham served as secretary and librarian.

Six members of the class of 1955 were elected to the Cum Laude Society of Friends' Central : Sarah Deming, Anthony Hudock, Linda Johnson, Allan Mackey, Bruce Miller and Theodore Riccardi. By accepting the keys awarded to them these students have pledged themselves to " continue the pursuit of learning and to make wisdom and truth the guide of their lives." The Cum Laude Society, which is the equivalent in secondary schools of Phi Beta Kappa in college, was foundep by Dr. Abram W . Harris in 1906. Dr. Harris felt that high school students with outstanding scholastic records and good character should be recognized and rewarded as they are in college. Since obtaining its charter in 1928, Friends' Central has elected 228 students to membership.

abre>ac:l Two seniors, Sally Deming and Middy Minster were fortunate in having the experience of living with a family abroad. Middy spent the, second semester of her junior year in Mexico, attending the American School in Mexico City. Sally was the recipient of an American Field Service scholarship, under their Summer Abroad Plan. She hoped to go to Germany and was sent to Graefelfing, where our affiliated school is located. Both girls were deeply impressed with the life and people of the countries they visited and have brought the school closer to a better understanding of ways of life different from our own.

Friends' Central school life was greatly enriched this year by the addition of Hans Huber to the student body. Hans, an exchange student from Graefelfing, Germany, became a member of the sophomore class where he developed his interests in English and social studies. His visit was made possible by the proceeds from the 1954 carnival sponsored by the Service Club. Hans hopes to continue his education at the University of Munich when he returns to Germany. A wonderful friend, always willing to help a struggling German student, Hans has aided greatly Friends' Central's hope of furthering good will between nations.

Miss "Letitia" Regan and Mrs. "Crystal'' Hayward regaled the audience in their portrayals of the "Two Blind Mice" in the faculty play which was presented on January 21 and 22 in the Rex Gym. The gym was packed to capacity both nights with swooning teenagers who were overcome by Mr. Andrews' charm in his role as Tommy Thurston. Mrs. Barnett had a difficult part as his ex-wife, Karen, who due to her ex-husband's tricks loses her new-found love. Mr. Snite, who is really as naive as he looks, is her distinguished doctor friend. Miss Johnson, dancing teacher, better known to us as Miss Carson, revealed hidden talents to the audience in the form of Mr. Small, whose mambo performance brought down the house! Her other pupil, an Air Force officer (Mr. Farraday) wasn't as shy as he looked ... Some of the characters were so convincing that they weren't recognized. Miss Whitcraft surprised more than one F.C. student when they realized who the tottering old seamstress was. Jane Threadwaite, played by Mrs. Atkinson, was convincing in her role of a member of the State Department. Very

handsome in his uniform was Mr. Emerson as a commander in the navy. Members of the WACS were ably portrayed by Miss MacMahon and Miss Blackburn. Mr. Harvey, though not in the armed forces, had a uniform of his own. As Tommy Thurston's old newspaper boss he was very convincing. The third act was truly the high spot of the play, when our southern Senator Kruger, played by Mr. Burrowes, flew into a temper tantrum. To contrast his fiery nature, Mr. Kirk, the senator's well-disciplined nephew (fresh out of Annapolis) played the part of an ensign in the navy . Other Thespians from the faculty who displayed their talents were Miss Curvan as the mail clerk and Mrs. Brumfield as "A Visitor." Choir members, Mr. McVickar, Mrs . Reifsnyder and Miss Griffiths, did a fine job. "The production committee was headed by Cecil B. DeBurgess. The able prompter was Mrs. Small. Mrs. Klarmann handled the job of business manager. Miss Stout was in charge of props; Mrs. Reifsnyder, costumes; Mrs. Ham, Ushers; Miss Curvan, makeup; and Miss Coles, stage set.

Edited jointly by Nan Fetter and Bonnie Gross and under the advisorship of Mrs . Woerner, the News endeavored to cover all events of interest to the student body this year. Barry Tague, boys' sports editor, Richard Klein, Randy Teaf and Trygve Woxen reported on the boys' sports scene while Marion Appel and Barbara Zilling covered girls' sports. Gail First. Lower School editor, did an excellent job in that quarter and Sandy Powell and Curtis Pontz wrote the general news. In addition to enlivening the paper with her cartoons, Jodi Guthrey wrote an in-

teresting social column, the Prying Eye, and arranged the cuts. Marianne Miller and Minna Snyder sent out the exchanges each month. Kevin Cadigan penned an original column and Bill Flynn took over Debby Gayl's post as affiliation editor when she left for Mexico. Indispensable to the paper were those behind the scenes: Herman Rosenberger, business manager, who took care of the ads each month; the typists, Joe Garfield, Marti Graham, Anne Markland and the typing class.

Miss Blackburn's Girls' Athletic Association, with able leadership from president. Anne Nusbaum; vice presidents, Judy Moulton and Sieta Van Zanten; and secretary, Abby Huberman, has again promoted good sportsmanship. The Girls' A.A. Banquet was the highlight of the year when hockey letters were awarded to girls from the seventh through the. twelfth grades •and Nan Fetter received the White Blazer Award. The Boys' Athletic Association of 19541955 was led by president. Bill Gartner; vice president, Toby Walters; and secretary-treasurer, Bob Gartner.

Under the guidance of Mr. Kirk and Mr. Groff the Boys' A.A. also gave the Fatherand-Son Banquet which had the largest tumout in the history of F.C.S. The fall sports athletic !utters were awarded but the highlight of the night was the awarding of the Fahlen Trophy to Bill Gartner. Together, the Boys' and Girls' A.A.'s sponsored the annual Field Day which brought many parents and friends out to watch individuals and teams match skill in spirited competition.

The Fahlen Trophy, awarded annually since 1947 at the Father and Son Banquet, is given to a member of the Varsity football team who in the eyes of his coaches has shown the greatest proficiency and team spirit. William Gartner, this year's recipient. played four years on the Varsity and at all times showed outstanding sportsmanship and effort. The white blazer is awarded to any girl who in or before her junior year has made

four Varsity teams and who has been in attendance at F.C .S. for at least two years. Lyn Bidgood, co-captain of this year's hockey team, received the Blazer Award in 1954. On all teams on which she played, Lyn showed outstanding sportsmanship and spirit. To qualify for the blazer, the girl must also display leadership and high character. Bill and Lyn have shown leadership and spirit not only on the athletic field but also in many other phases of school life.

Decked out in kilts and knee socks, our seven cheerleaders kept pep and spirit high at football and basketball games. F.C. stands were always filled and songs and cheers rang out, lead by peppy captain Anne Nusbaum and her squad. The girls, all seniors, spurred the teams forward and were largely responsible for the great enthusiasm in the student body.

The 1954 football campaign at Friends' Central came to an end with the team chalking up a record of four wins and three losses. All members of the Varsity football squad will remember the opening game, a victory over Archmere Academy 31-13 followed by the conquering of George School 40-19, Williamson Trade School13-0, and Germantown Friends 20-13·. Having only 22 men to work with, coaches Kirk and Burgess felt that the season was a great success. F.C.'s record would probably have been much better if there had been more reserve strength. The graduating seniors will definitely be a loss to next year's team. One of the outstanding factors in the F.C. forward wall was co-captain Bill Gartner who was playing his fourth year on the Varsity. Bill showed his all around ability and was one

of the team's mainstays. Mayer Schnyder, Doug Lauck, and Tom Pugh, who were also up front regularly, proved their aggressiveness and determimxtion whether in practice or in a game. Joe Borneman, playing his first year at the pivot spot, displayed some excellent ball snapping and blocking. The hardest running block in F.C.'s attack was the other co-captain of the team, Ted Pounds. Ted played an equally adept game on defense. Fullback Ed Rummel could always be counted on for needed yardage, but an injury at mid-season in the George School game caused his retirement for the balance of the season. Elliot Snow ably replaced Ed and did a fine job of carrying the pigskin. Mike Darcy and John Foster, also graduating lettermen, helped the team immensely.

This year's Varsity hockey squad, cocaptained by Lyn Bidgood and Middy Minster, ended the season with five wins, two losses and one tie. On our forward line leading the attack were Anne Nusbaum, Betsy PauL and Judy Moulton, returning lettermen, and Susan Carlen and Roberta Sheen who received their letters for the first time. Backing up the forwards were halfbacks Middy Minster, Sieta Van Zanten, and Sarah Hardin. Full-

backs Bonnie Boardman and Nan Fetter could always be depended on to defend the goal to the last and Lyn Bidgood, our goalie, did an outstanding job stopping the balls. The fighting second team, led by Marcy Henry, Nancy Ives and Esther Moore had a good season also with six wins, one loss and one tie . The fine coaching from Liza Blackburn kept team spirit and the will to win strong and did much to make the team successful.

se>ccer Friends' Central's 1954 Varsity soccer team, ably coached by Stan Morrison, and captained by Toby Walters, proved to be a ball club with stubborn determination and a great desire to win. Although their record is unii11pressive with two wins, ten losses and one tie, the Blue and Gray booters never knew the meaning of the words "give up ." Always trying to perfect their team work, they battled to 'better their record through the long schedule. Many of the returning players showed a vast improvement. Toby Walters' ability gained him a place on the All-Interac first

team and goalie Frank Knipe, playing his first year of soccer, received Honorable Mention. AI Mackey, playing left halfback, showed increased speed and great headwork. Colin Dickson and Nicky Freeman checked other teams innumerable times with their clever footwork . Dave Hardin and Dan Egan provided great speed. F.C.'s chances in Interac competition were hurt considerably when Dick Spillman and Ted Clisby went on the injured list. Karl Bopp and Bob Creskoff ably headed the team's reserve strength.

The girls' basketball team of 1955 began its season with returning lettermen Marion Appel. captain; Helen DeOrsay; Nan Fetter; and Pat Pugh again eager to shoot baskets for the Blue and Gray. Sallie Whitesell, Linda Johnson, Bonnie Boardman, Ruth Jarvis, Judy Moulton, Winnie Repp. Sieta Van Zanten, and Sarah Hardin added team work and spirit to win their letters.

The team suffered the loss of two major players but nevertheless practiced hard and fought to overcome the loss. Captain Marion Appel and Pat Pugh were unable to play most of the season because of accidents. The inspiration and skilled coaching from 'Liza Blackburn helped the team through the season.

The 1954-55 basketball team completed its season with a record of eight wins and eleven defeats. Again this year Friends' Central has one of the best ballplayers in the greater Philadelphia area, Ted Pounds. In seventeen games Ted had scored 340 points, for an even average of twenty points a game. Bill Gartner ru. captain of the F.C. Five, sparked the team on with his encouragement and ready word of praise for a job well done. Toby Walters gave Ted Pounds the most assistance in the scoring column. Ed Rummel.

The two juniors on the team, Alan Freeman and Jimmy "Mo" Weinstein, have been very valuable when called on to help out. The Blue and Gray's reserves consisted of two seniors, Allan Mackey and Nick Freeman, and three sophomores, Andy Stifler, Steve Cozen and Gary Fields. These boys constituted a dependable bench for their coach, Mr. Groff.

As this article goes to press, the outcome of the 1955 baseball season is still unknown . One thing is sure, that the Blue and Gray will go into every game with wholehearted fight and desire to win . Coach Dave Kirk seems to think that this year's team has a lot of possibilities and says, that if F.C . gets the breaks, they should end up with a quite respectable record. This year's returning lettermen are John

Nagy, Ed Rummel, Toby Walters, Nicky Freeman, Jim Weinstein, Al Freeman, and Andy Stifler. With these players as the backbone of the team and the other new athletes at F.C. such as Ted Pounds, Bill Walton, Harvey Tucker, and Steve Cozen the outlook is definitely bright. As the team begins to practice long and hard for its season ahead, we wish them all the luck and good fortune possible .

The lacrosse team this year, coached by Betsy Smith Farmakis, an All-Philadelphia hockey player, was co-captained by Sallie Whitesell and Anne Nusbaum. Together they worked to get the team in shape for a big schedule which included games with Baldwin, Lower Merion, Irwin, Shipley, Marple Newtown, Swarthmore and Sanford. With team work and spirited playing from returning lettermen Anne Nusbaum, Sallie Whitesell, Lyn Bidgood, Sally Deming, Judy Moulton, Nan Fetter, Sieta Van Zanten

and Betsy Paul and second team players from last year Patricia Hopkins, Beverly Boardman, Middy Minster and Sue Souder. the team practiced long and hard to prepare for its games. Two seniors have won their gold lacrosse sticks. Sally Deming won hers in her junior year and Lyn Bidgood in her senior year. Through long and hard practice the squad was able to have a successful season.

It is remembered not only as an educational experience but as an event which brought us all closer together. Our headquarters were the Williamsburg Lodge from which we departed to explore the town . While on our guided tour of the restored buildings, the popular stop was

the jail where many juniors (and chaperones) found themselves locked in stocks to give camera bugs material. The afternoon was spent touring the town, mainly the old craft shops and the taverns. Objects purchased on these sprees ranged from three cornered hats to love potions. The trip ended all too soon, but we shall long remember our junior trip as a bright spot in our years at F.C.
