1930s

Nancy Woods (née Caldecott) 1933-1945 Obviously I am still alive and I am still living opposite my daughter and family. I have been a lucky girl all my life and this is extending into old age so far!

from Leeds University with a First in Masters of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Lizzie made her West End debut in The Phantom of the Opera in the Ensemble and covering Madame Giry. Both she and Tom are a credit to Frensham and to their own talent and hard work.

Mary Briggs (née Hollingsworth) 1935-1946 Following my happy years at Frensham, I have been lucky enough to have two of my grandchildren also there so I have been able to follow another generation through the school. I am feeling very proud of Lizzie Holmes (200007), who graduated from the Royal College of Music with a Masters Degree in Vocal Performance, and Tom Holmes (2002-09), who graduated

Eric Cass 1936-1939 (above) My wife, Jean, and I were honoured to receive an MBE each in the 2014 New Year Honours. As it would have been to difficult for us to go to Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle, Her Majesty The Queen arranged for her representative, the Lord Lieutenant for Surrey, to come to our apartment and carry out the presentation.

Wilfred Cass 1936-1941 I turned 90 and am sending photographs of the celebrations, which took place on 11 November 2014. (See over). Eric Talbot-Weiss 1938-1948 I am shortly to celebrate my 83rd birthday. Despite advancing years, I play golf twice a week, weather permitting, and do a lot of walking in the local countryside. I live in the village of Overton in Hampshire and am close to my family. Sadly, my wife of some 57 years is now in a care home in Winchester suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s Disease, so now I live alone. I have been on many cruises run by Saga as they look after you so well and are full of interest. Recently I cruised to northern Norway and

was fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights. Is anyone else from Frensham cruising with Saga? Do let me know via the OF office. Tom Koralek 1939-1940 Tom’s daughter writes: He’s still travelling between Mexico in Winter and Europe in the summer so has a very lovely life and still captivates any audience within ear reach. Tom writes: Marie-Claire and I are currently at our hibernation abode in Mexico as every winter but this time all our children and grandchildren are about to join us for an infrequent family reunion on the occasion of my 90th birthday. I read in the Guardian a couple of weeks ago that Lord (Claus) Moser

had his 93rd ; is anyone else of my OF generation still around? The only offspring with whom I now keep in touch is Isabel Knowland, Tony and Barbara’s daughter.

The only other OF of the next generation with whom I obviously have constant communication is my daughter Ivana. She teaches up to A Levels at an Inner London school and was just classified as an ’outstanding teacher‘ by HM Inspectorate of Schools.

Robina Mapstone (née Blair) 1942-1952 It’s almost three years since I retired and discovering life after work has been an interesting journey. After learning that I didn’t need to tackle everything at high speed, the mornings became entirely different. My garden gets more attention, I read the paper and listen to news, and am discovering the community, Venice, California, where I have lived but not explored since commuting took up most of those good hours.

Back in the late 1960s, when I worked for IBM’s Museum and Exhibition Department, I was part of an IBM (client) Eames Office (designer) team that created a major exhibition ’Computer Perspective‘ at 590 Madison Avenue in New York City. Forty-seven years later I am reconnected with these world-renowned designers and am showing their work to visitors from around the world. Other than that, I have lived in the same house in California for 42 years. I ballroom dance, sing in an opera chorus, garden, enjoy autobiographical writing, photograph landscapes, practice Pilates, go to opera, symphony, theatre and museums, travel, and wonder where the time

Denise Altschul (née Simons) 1942-1946 My surname while at Frensham was Simons (Jacobs was my married name and my son Simon Jacobs (1977-79) is also an OF). I’m afraid that the nickname Dizzy, which I was given at school, has stuck with me all my life, although I shortened it to Diz when I emigrated to Canada, explaining it away as being similar to ’an Elizabeth being called Liz‘. I married a second time, now widowed, hence the surname Altschul. (See Diz’s lovely poem overleaf).

It’s not in my nature to grumble But, Good Lord, I can’t be 85! I try hard to keep myself busy Took lessons to learn the guitar. I paint watercolour and acrylic And I’ve made all my Christmas cards. I studied Haiku with a Master. Learned to dance, from a young ballet star. Took up sculpture and creative writing, Volunteer both nearby and afar. I do aquafit twice a week now, And swim like a fish on a hook, But I’m nearer to 90 than 80, I’m hoping that’s not how I look ! I’ve sort of, ’gone off’ constant flirting And love to curl up with...a book!!

Steven Frank 1949-1953 (above) I have spoken at Morning Talk in the school a couple of times over the last few years about my experience as a holocaust survivor during World War II. I have also just completed filming in York on the first 3D film about my experience with the most up-to-date technology that will allow members of an audience who hear my story to ask questions and the hologram will answer them. The interesting thing is that I am the first survivor in this country to be filmed and possibly in Europe too.

But what’s happened was quite unexpected, I, for once, had an evening to spare. A friend of mine was performing At a club, near my home; I went there. I entered a room full of strangers And waved to my friend from afar, I settled myself at a table Where a man, sat alone, near the bar.

Note: The Interactive Holocaust Survivor Testimony project is run by the National Holocaust Centre and the aim is to preserve the voice of Holocaust survivors for generations to come. Steven has been filmed in High Definition 3D telling his moving story about his experiences in Holland, Westerbork and Theresein, his liberation and his eventual safe arrival in England. As part of the filming, his answers to hundreds of frequently asked questions were also captured so that in years to come his hologram should be able to interact with audiences.

His white hair had caught my attention, He looked up, and gave me a smile. The evening ’blurred past’, I should mention As together, we walked to our cars. Six months have now passed since I met him, A reminder, of how life CAN be, Just good luck that he lives ’round the corner’ A few minutes drive, from me. We have so many interests in common And I’m constantly learning from him, Whereas he thinks I’m crazily active, That my life’s a continuous spin! Who knows what’s in our future? My ’new life‘, just ’appeared’. So - I’m nearer to 90 than 80 And life didn’t stop in those years. One must live for the day And just put away, Those nagging, Old-Age, fears.

Jane de Sausmarez (née Boswell) 1942-1955 On 15 July 2014, I gave one of the lunchtime lectures at the National Gallery. The title was

‘Colour: Understanding the Deception’ to coincide with the then current exhibition ‘Making Colour’. This was the first time I had ever given a public lecture so the stage fright set in about two months beforehand! Once I felt I had knocked the content into shape, the next problem was the delivery. How to be natural? I was rather saved from this predicament when, shortly after I had started speaking in what sounded to me liked a halfstrangulated voice, the zapper slid off the lectern and on to the floor. “Oh my gawd”, I said as I retrieved it, quite forgetting I was miked up. Everyone laughed and that was it: from then on I thoroughly enjoyed myself and now of course I can’t wait to do it again. Peter Strauss 1944-1948 I retired last year following 22 years carrying out my own successful and independent coal consultancy business as a geologist. My interests and background were summarized in an article entitled Consider Coal in the OF Magazine 2010. My long career has been a truly rewarding experience, involving much travel. Since retiring, I have continued to enjoy life with my wife, Mary, one daughter living near us with 12-year-old twin boy and girl, a son living at home and the eldest son based in Auckland.

I have a large garden to look after. Recently two large trees behind our house in Sydney had to be removed as we have bushfire-prone land beyond our property. We also have an 11-year-old golden retriever who is regularly taken for walks. So life continues to be relaxing and enjoyable. However, shortly I will start an eight-week radiation treatment programme for prostate cancer but I will be in good hands. For the last five years I have regularly communicated by snail mail with Pippa Coulston née Hollingsworth (1935-49) who lives in New Zealand. In contrast to mine, Pippa’s recollection of people and events at FH are quite remarkable. Indeed, I have also been in touch for 11 years via email with a former pre-war Berlin classmate who now lives in Brazil and still works. This contact arose through a letter with a class photo published in a Berlin journal. During an extended two-month holiday in Europe in 2010 accompanied by my daughter and her children, I much enjoyed visiting FH again and meeting Andrew Fisher and some staff members. Joel Montague 1946-1949 I was at Frensham from 194649 and my brother, Harry (deceased last year), from 1946-48. That was the period of ‘austerity’... not so many of us still around who remember those chilly nights and miserable food! Yet for me (I was called ‘Yank’) those were totally happy years with a memorable and often eccentric staff and wonderful diverse students, all under the direction of the superb, very progressive (for his

time) headmaster, Paul Roberts, who will never be forgotten by any of us.

with a Chinese co-author has been accepted by the Zhanjiang Normal University Journal. I am in and out of China, with my last trip paid for by the Zhanjiang Historical Research Association.

After the military and college and various graduate schools, I led a life as a public health officer mostly overseas with non-profits and the UN. My most interesting job was as Head of Health for five years based in France for His Highness the Aga Khan. I retired 10 years ago and live in Wellesley, Massachusetts, near Boston. I’m happy to meet ageing OFs who visit this part of the world.

In short, I am busy, happy, and thank goodness so far have just the normal aches and pains which beset 83 year olds. Patricia Waddington 19461949 Since leaving Frensham Heights, I have travelled extensively, living mostly in Italy, the USA and Argentina. I shall be 80 very soon. I am still working a great deal in tourism, guiding in Buenos Aires and travelling around mostly South America. I would love to hear from anyone who dates back to my days in Frensham.

I’m married to an Iranian, a doctor still in Private Practice. We have two children: Maryam, married to an American architect saving the world based in Morocco with Management Systems International doing development work in the Middle East and Africa, and a son who is Professor of Urology at University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Gloria Simmons (née Littlestone) 1946-1950 Just to let you know that having reached my 80th birthday in September 2014, I retired after 15 years from my work as a counsellor and family therapist at a large health centre in Bushey, Hertfordshire but I am continuing to work with clients in my private practice from home. I am now trying to decide what area of voluntary work I might find locally. I will probably end up helping out at the local hospice where perhaps I will be able to use my counselling skills in some way to give comfort to older people and the terminally ill. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me during my time at Frensham.

Since I retired 10 years ago, besides being very active as a trustee and doing consulting work with the non-profit organisation ‘Partners for Development’, which I helped found, and gardening, I have taken to writing . My most recent books are ‘La Terre de Bouddha’, DatAsia 2013, and this year I co-authored with Jim Mizerski ‘John Thomson: the Early Years in Search of the Orient’, White Lotus, which has hundreds of 19th century photos of Asia by the first, it is believed, photo-journalist. I am currently working on a book on the French leasehold of Kouang Tcheou Wan in China. One article on the subject is now out in Chinese and another

Joanna Bicknell (née Bell) 1946-1954 I was married for 48 years; my husband died in 2007. In 2010, I bought a small bungalow and

finally sold the waterfront family home in 2011. I am lucky to have my three children living nearby: Nigel and Janice nearer Montreal and the youngest, Sheila, quite near me off the western tip of the island of Montreal and near the Ottawa River. Janice and son-in-law Frank have two daughters: the eldest in her first year at Dawson College in Montreal and the youngest in High School. Janice did work for Air Canada like her father but is now with Bombardier and Sheila is a dietician. I gave up riding some years ago but still keep in touch with riders and horses. I enjoy my garden, live theatre and film and try to keep fit with exercise classes in nearby Hudson, Quebec. Sad to say, despite living in French Canada, my French is not good, although Frensham gave me every opportunity to master it!! I’m so sorry I shall not be joining the 90th celebrations but I will be thinking of my years as a day pupil, sometimes riding my pony part way to school and then changing to my bicycle in Rowledge. That seems so long ago!! Vanessa Winchester (née Wills) 1949-1956 Retired: current projects include looking at climate change on Cairn Gorm, Scotland, as registered by vegetation around a snowpatch called ‘Margaret’s coffin’ and a study in southern Madagascar of a forest’s decline where the lives of numerous rare beasts, particularly ringtailed lemurs, are threatened.

1950s Christine Glover (née McAlister) 1955-1964 After 30 happy years in Edinburgh, Christine has moved to Amesbury in Wiltshire where she is continuing to practice as a holistic health consultant. Michael Rendell 1956-1965 Mike retired from the Law a decade ago and started a new career as a historian. His interest is the Georgian Era and he has written a number of books about the period, including an illustrated introduction to the Georgians and a biography of Phillip Astley, the man who founded the modern circus in 1768. He

has been commissioned to write a book about the sexual shenanigans of the Georgians, to be entitled ‘Sex, Scandal and Satire - in bed with the Georgians’, which is due out in 2016, and an illustrated introduction to the Regency period, due in 2015. He gives lectures extensively, both in this country and in Spain, where he spends half the year. He has also joined the cruise liner lecture circuit, giving talks on 18th Century social history.

Angela de Winter (Lindsay formerly Weinstein) 19581962 I have fond memories of the occasional Saturday night dance at Frensham. Years later I discovered Ceroc (modern jive) where I met my partner James. I have four grandchildren. My son Simon has two boys: Joshua (7) and Oliver (5) and my daughter Nicki has two girls: Sophie (7) and Lauren (5). I was a stay at home mum and my married name was Weinstein. When I got divorced I decided to reinvent myself. I changed my name to de Winter and after doing an Access Course went to University of Hertfordshire where I read Linguistics and Drama. When my peer group began thinking of

retirement, my mother became ill and I then had to take over the family property business, which I continue to run. In our free time, James and I enjoy playing bridge and dancing Argentina Tango – exercise for the brain and body. I also go to art classes, which is good for the soul. We have reluctantly sold our skis and hung up our tennis racquets and now like to travel whenever we can. 2015 will be a very important year. Frensham’s 90th birthday and we both have big birthdays to celebrate as well! I look forward to seeing my old classmates again in September.

final day of teaching – not good timing on the part of either of us. I feel I must have looked up ‘retired’ in the wrong dictionary as I have 25 pupils (mostly piano) and am involved with several Eisteddfods. I am lucky enough to live in a large house overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean. I no longer have a dog as a pet, the last one, Ludwig, dying at the ripe old age of nearly 17. We obviously named him Ludwig after Beethoven, so be careful what you name your pet as both Ludwigs went completely deaf. If any Frenshamians who are reading this remember me, then I send my love to the girls and my best wishes to the boys. I have many happy memories from those days, for which I express my sincere gratitude to Frensham Heights – a great school.

1960s Doborah Flierl 1962-1966 Born in the USA, our family lived several years in Frankfurt, Germany until we moved to England when I was six. My father was a commercial airline pilot for Pan American Airways. My mother wrote a column for the Brazil Herald in Rio de Janeiro when they were living there in the 1940s (free airline tickets helped with research for columns). As an older woman, she sold real estate in Surrey. A couple of years after Frensham, I came to America at the age of 18 and have lived here ever since. We made regular trips back to England and Europe to visit my immediate family and

they visited me here. I have one daughter who is married, works for a dentist, and has three sons. I am currently reading the Book of Mormon from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints.

Christopher Paul Latham 1962-1970 I was on the Music Staff from 1962 until 1970. I also stayed at my next two schools (Sidcot in Somerset and Scotch College in Melbourne Australia) for eight years each, causing someone to comment that they thought I had a seven-year-itch and it took me a year to scratch.

I took the Scotch College Orchestra of 72 boys on a 15-day tour of China in 1986 then moved to Perth in 1987 to become Director of Music at a large girls’ school - the ‘large’ referring to the school, not the girls. I took their orchestra and choir on tours of Japan and England and then retired in 1998, my wife dying from the dreaded cancer during my

Richard Thomas 1963 – 1966 Richard continues to live the joyful life of a retiree in Perth, Western Australia. His major involvement is currently in organising the 9th Global Buddhist Conference to be held in Perth from 8-9 August 2015. It is hoped to have a session to consider issues such as cyborg art, social robotics and the implications of emerging technologies from a Buddhist ethics perspective. Of course there will be more traditional topics as well. Another strong interest is in protecting the bush, performing ecological surveys and general work on rehabilitation of degraded land. Of course he likes flying around the planet but takes great care to offset his

emissions and has visited some of the actual sites where trees are planted and flourishing. Lucien Rees-Roberts 19641969 Croatia and in particular the island off the coast of Dubrovnik where we have a couple of cottages is still my favourite place to be. We have finished the restoration of a 15th century tower on the island into a house and this will be published in Architectural Digest. I got married at our upstate home to my partner of 30 years, Steven Harris. I have also had an exhibition of Lopud paintings in America but also Croatia. My firm, Rees-Roberts and Partners, stays busy doing Interiors and Landscape in America and Europe but I am trying to restructure the firm and hoping to spend more time painting. Nick Van Praag 1964-1970 I live in Vienna after retiring three years ago from the World Bank where I worked for two decades. It is great to be back in Europe and I visit the UK often. My professional focus is on the humanitarian space through a program I set up called Ground Truth. Our goal is to improve the performance of humanitarian programmes by bringing the voice of the people who are supposed to benefit into program design and implementation. It is a simple idea but it had not been done before - at least not the way we do it.

My brother, Lucas van Praag, is a long-time resident of New York where he runs a financial PR company and my sister, Jo van Praag, is a talented and successful garden designer and practitioner based in London and Norfolk. Vanessa Nicolson-Davidson (née Nicolson) 1966-1973 I have had a memoir entitled ‘Have you Been Good?’ accepted by Granta for publication on 7 May 2015. I write about my time at Frensham 1966-1973, among other things. Richard Daniel 1967-1973 Living in Bath. Happily married with two lovely teenage children.

Simon Thomas 1964-1972 I still live in the South Island of New Zealand, ‘Land of the long white Cloud’. My one and only grandson, Kye (aged 2) visited recently from Canada, which made me feel old and happy. My other three kids are all over the world. I now manage Summit Real Estate in Motueka, which oddly enough is the career my father had – who would have guessed! I produce a music show for Fresh FM called My New Album (you can download the podcast from iTunes). I’d love to hear from any old FH mates. John Harrison1966-1968 I have taken up the chair of a charity called Childhood First, which runs therapeutic residential communities for children aged between 5 and 18 who have suffered severe emotional trauma. I have been a trustee for over 20 years.

We are now working on the Ebola response in Sierra Leone, on the crisis of internal displacement in Ukraine, on

Pasha du Valentine (nĂŠe Sarnia de la Mare) 1973-1976 I have been running Brighton Arts Club for two years and am about to open our second arts cafe with our own radio station in affiliation with Goddamn Media. I bump into people from Frensham on a regular basis as hundreds of visitors pass through our doors every week. I am a new grandma with the recent birth of Romeo de la Mare, son of my youngest son Rupert. My mother, now 70, has confusingly put Frensham down as her old school on social media, probably accidentally on purpose after her fond memories from the 70s. I am in regular contact with several chums. Bridget Orlando donated one of her amazing paintings to BAC recently.

Belinda Eaton (nĂŠe Creswell) 1974-1977 I am a painter and information can be found on me on my website www.belindaeaton. com. After leaving Frensham and Saint Martins School of Art, I went on to live in New York for crazy arty hedonistic times, France to ground myself and reconnect and Pakistan for adventure and shift in life, and have finally ended up living in the only desert in Europe in Almeria Spain. This is where all the spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood were made and is now the location for many films. Within this surreal landscape I have built a painting studio connected to an old cortijo which is also an olive farm.

I am deeply involved in yoga and run a small yoga centre down here as well as teach and help train teachers in the lineage of Integral Hatha Yoga. After a life of travelling and many adventures, I am very happy in this moment living in this beautiful environment surrounded by nature, stars and peace, painting and teaching. Anna Gillespie 1975-1982 Last year, Andrew Fisher invited me to Frensham Heights to consider a proposed commission for the plinths outside the art blocks. The sculpture that is emerging from this process, having been selected by a small committee of students and teachers, is called Recollection. (See above).

Recollection was inspired by my visit, after an absence of almost 30 years. While many things had changed at the school, I was deeply moved by the familiar sights and the memories that came flooding back. My work has involved using mast from oak trees for about 10 years but it was a complete surprise to me on returning to Frensham to see so many beautiful mature oaks. In my day, the grounds were dominated by rhododendrons, which we played in at almost every opportunity. To my delight, the area outside the art blocks that Andrew was asking me to look at was within as good as touching distance of some lovely oaks. This inspired me to bring natural elements into the walkway.

Revisiting Frensham I strongly felt the passage of time from childhood through to adulthood and hope this sculpture expresses this feeling, which we all experience. Like me, the sculpture is looking back to its origins and reflects on change, growth and potential. My hope is that the sculpture also reflects the joining of the head and hand, which I feel is appropriate to its position outside the art blocks. I was nourished by Frensham Heights and around me I could see the very same process taking place. Aaron Fedor (formerly Sanders) 1977-1979 Aaron Fedor lives in New York City with his 10-year-old son Luke (Aaron is divorced). He produces and directs videos, is a photographer as well and is open to any Frenshamians who are ever in New York. Meg van Rooyen 1977-1981 I work at a national charity as a policy manager in debt advice. I still live in Leamington Spa with partner David. My son Jack is finishing his degree at Sheffield University in Politics (compulsory subject in our family) and daughter Molly is doing her AS levels. I have one house, two cats and an allotment alongside a serious Twitter current affairs addiction. Annette Teesdale (née Crisp) 1977-1982 Annette Suzannah Maria Crisp, daughter of writer NJ Crisp and sister to Simon Tracy Crisp (OF 1968-1972). Married for a second time to Kevin Paul Teesdale and currently residing in Germany. I am a part time assistant Kennel Manager for the Ministry of Defence and a full time Apprenticeship

I have carried out numerous qualifications in alternative therapies, canine training, veterinary nursing and teaching and am currently working towards taking a Canine psychology degree. My husband is a full time Kennel Manager, canine behaviourist and trainer plus a part-time gentleman’s barber. We will be moving back to the UK to take up residence on our narrowboat. My son has been educated in Germany and is currently waiting for a university offer in Germany to study medicine.

I have fond memories of Frensham and wish well all those who knew me there. It was, after all, a most civilised place and quite unlike anything I had seen in my previous 38 years in education. Ivana Koralek 1979-1982 For my part, my youngest (Tobias) will be leaving home either for a year’s sabbatical or going to university whereas my eldest (Yann) will have just finished university. Myself, I’m now the Head of Ethnic Minority Achievement in a London comprehensive, not quite as powerful as it sounds but is as far as I want to go in Education. I am coming to the opinion that a change of career is in order but I’m still pondering on its direction. In a dream: something to do with dance, having recently attended Ballet Rambert classes and thought of Joanna Thompson, my most inspired teacher. I will never forget working on a most compelling homeproduced soundtrack with some existential movements. Sometimes I fear that the Education system I’m now part of doesn’t allow the freedom to explore that I was privileged to have at Frensham.

Allegra Stroup 1978-1979 I live in a small town called Arcata in Northern California right on the coast among the redwoods. It is beautiful and remote. I am a family nurse practitioner at a rural community health clinic. Most of my patients are poor and have historically received very poor health care because they can’t afford it; many of them are also homeless. It is a challenging and rewarding job. John Taylor 1978-1983 When I was retired at 60, I went on to lecture on the BA (Management) programme at the Colchester Institute, a franchised feeder college first for Anglia Ruskin University and then for Essex, until my fourth and final retirement in 2011.

Jacqueline Meyer 1981-1983 There’s not really much to report except that I got married in 2004 and am still living in Rome and still working for the same American pharmaceutical company where I have worked for the past 27 years. Murphy Williams 1982-1984 Murphy has been living by the sea in Cornwall for the past 10 years with her children Silver, 11, and Jesse, 12, and her partner Louis Eliot. She recently switched from journalism to confectionery and now whisks up award-winning puffs of air and sweetness for her company Cloud Nine Marshmallows.

Jo Rothwell (née Lisney) 1983-1987 I moved to New York in 1996 and spent two years there working in a music PR firm representing Sting, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner to name a few. On my return to London I began working at Freud communications and did publicity for Chris Evans on his Virgin Breakfast Show & TFI Friday.

William Hodgkinson 19831987 Having spent the last decade and a half working as a writer, and the last five as rock and pop critic for The Times, I was pulled back to late-80s Frensham Heights in writing ‘The House Is Full Of Yogis’, a childhood memoir on my family going from being bourgeois suburbanites into meditating freaks after our father had a Damascene revelation and joined an Indian spiritual group called the Brahma Kumaris.

I had a son called Dylan in 2000, a daughter called Lola in 2003 and twins Ava and Mylo in 2010. I am marred, have been living in Leeds for 12 years and have spent time teaching preschool music classes. It turns out that my friend and next door neighbour in Leeds was hosting a party and after chatting to her dad, Chris Jordan, found he is also an even older OF. I am still best of friends with Adam Meiklejohn, Charlotte Curling and Lucy Howe.

My going to Frensham was one of the happier products of father Nev’s moment of enlightenment. The book recalls, among other incidents, Hamilton House housemaster John Atkinson making the

Joseph White 1983-1990 I have fond memories of the seven years I spent at Frensham between 1983 and 1990. Throughout those challenging adolescent years with their worries and insecurities, I felt supported by friends, staff and the genuine family atmosphere at the school. So where am I now? You could say I ran away to join the circus. After starting my career as a theatre stage technician and lighting designer, I’ve spent the last 10 years in the world of performer rigging. Working mainly in theatre and circus, I design and set up equipment and systems to suspend performers, including acrobats, wall runners and tightrope walkers, for companies including Cirque du Soleil. It has given me the chance to abseil off buildings, suspend performers from bridges, spend time climbing in trees, and dangle performers from various theatre roofs around the world. I owe a lot to Frensham for introducing me to the world of theatre and the performing arts, and allowing me the freedom to develop my interests and skills. In my first year I was roped into performing in ‘Wind in the Willows’. I wasn’t very good at acting (and changing into costumes in a freezing cold hall didn’t help) but it did open my eyes to the jobs behind the scenes I might be better suited to. When an opening in the school lighting department arose, I volunteered for the job. I was given a bunch of keys to various parts of the school (Nevill Hall, the Minstrel’s Gallery) and pretty much left to get on with

Dick Jones and Jonathan Hughes were there for advice, and encouragement but I was allowed – along with Phil Riddett and Tim Robertson – to build and climb the access tower, put lights up, rewire Nevill Hall and design lighting rigs for pretty much every play, musical, band performance and disco that took place over the next six years. Health and safety didn’t really come into it in the eighties – or maybe they just trusted us not to do too much damage. I can thank Pauline Lalor for helping me to develop my early rigging skills by allowing me to play with ropes and build zip lines and rope swings on school camps. My first taste of what would eventually become my career was lowering performers from the roof of Nevill Hall. I think my 14-year-old self would be happy to know how it all turned out. I remain friends with various people from my time at Frensham, and of course Facebook has brought me back in contact with many more. I’m now married and living in Twickenham. My sister, Tamsin (OF 1981-88) is a teacher in Brighton and my brother, Sam (OF 1986 91) is a musician in Ireland. Antonia Carver 1987-1989 Antonia Carver is married with three children and living in Dubai. She is director of Art Dubai, the annual international fair and visual arts festival for the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Michael Dresser 1988-1992 The last year has seen gigantic changes in my life. In September 2013, I took the dramatic step of leaving a 12-

year relationship, home, work and nearly 20 years of life in London and set off in search of a more sustainable and fulfilling way of living. This took me initially to New Zealand for six months, where I did a mixture of travelling, staying with friends and ‘wwoofing’ (a form of volunteering in exchange for bed and board) and ‘more importantly’ began to examine who I am and what I really want out of my life (the stunning scenery and sunshine helped with this a lot!)

now doing and feel so at home doing it. Ben Le Roith 1988-1993 After A Levels I took a gap year and discovered a passion for Africa and International Development that has stayed with me ever since. After degrees in Environmental Geography (UCL) and Environment and Development (SOAS), I went to work for the Department for International Development, which manages the UK government’s programmes to reduce poverty around the world. I have subsequently enjoyed a series of fascinating and rewarding posts both in the UK and overseas in countries including Nigeria, Sudan, the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Iraq.

In May 2014, I moved to Scotland to join an intentional community at www. newboldhouse.org, living and working together in a large Victorian mansion near the Highlands. In addition to providing a home and livelihood for the community members who live in it, this functions as a retreat centre and guest house, with a big emphasis on connection to nature and spirit. I was a three-month volunteer, which extended to six months and then to becoming a full-time member of the community in charge of Housekeeping (those who remember my habit of hanging my clothes on the floor may find this particularly amusing!).

Nigeria has a special place in my heart as it is where I met my wife Bobo (who is from neighbouring Niger Republic) in 2003 and where my daughter Jasmine was born in 2013. My most recent post was as Head of Office for Northern Nigeria where I was based in Kano until the security situation deteriorated and we had to move to Abuja. At the time of writing, I am on a year’s Discretionary Leave and enjoying spending time with my wife and daughter as well as taking forward a number of personal projects including the building of a second home in Niger and investing in small businesses in Africa.

The journey I’m now on in my life has brought some incredible changes within me. In the last few months I feel as though I’ve really begun to see what my purpose and path in life may be, and am beginning to take steps towards making that a reality. I’m sure my time at Frensham, living and working together in a community driven by the idea of co-operation and love, has really had a huge impact on allowing me to do what I’m

Lisa Britten (née Smith) 1989-1995 I now live in South Nutfield and own and run a wedding/party land hire venue over 11 acres. I live with my partner Wez Lucas, our four rescue dogs and welcomed our little boy Zak into the world on 15 October.

Kitty Deane 1989-1996 By some magic, I’ve managed to become a bit of an expert in car insurance pricing and vaguely sought after. An opportunity came out of the blue at the beginning of 2014 to work on an eCom start up in China creating a mobile platform for insurance and it has been amazing! I’ve worked in this awesome, rather mysterious, country learning and seeing an enormous amount and meeting lovely people. I’m really glad with how things are working out – even though my carbon footprint is shamefully monstrous – it is fun and different. The next phases will be Thailand and Taiwan and I’m excited about the launch in China early 2015. Fingers crossed!

I stayed with Citigroup in London for four years before an opportunity came up to join Credit Suisse (another investment bank) in an HR role, where I have been ever since (11 years and counting). Since joining CS, I’ve held a variety of roles in HR and worked in London, New York, Sydney and most recently Hong Kong where I’m now regional HR lead for the Equities business in the Asia Pacific region. I was late to the table from a world travel perspective but now struggle to see myself returning full-time to the UK... funny how these things go sometimes…

1990s Sophie Pointer 1990-1996 I became an Aunty to Fox nearly two years ago and then had a daughter, Nancy (above top), with my partner Martin in March 2013. We live in Brighton and have a band together, Call Me Jolene (above bottom), with Travis Oliver (OF 1988-95). Last year I started working for Caroline Lucas, the first Green MP, which I love. In my other snippets of spare time, I am working with her to set up a citywide network for women and girls in Brighton and any other random bits of activism I can fit in! Alice Thorpe (née Butler) 1990-1995 I am married to James Thorpe and had a beautiful blonde baby boy in 2012 called Bertie. I live in Clapham Old Town in London and am the founder and director of Funky Moves, which provides quality dance activities for kids and adults around London...

So, after leaving Frensham, I took a year out during which I did nothing remotely productive and was highly unadventurous (unlike most of my classmates). I then went on to do a BSc in Psychology at University College London from 1994-97, working part-time in Harrods

I have extremely fond memories of my time at Frensham and feel quite strongly that I would not be where I am today, or had the adventures that I’ve had, were it not for the time I spent there. Quite aside from the fact that to this day one of my very best friends – 21 years on – is someone I made friends with at Frensham. The experience generally has stood me in very good stead for the cross-section of backgrounds, upbringing and cultural norms of the people I come into contact with on a daily basis. For both of these, I will be forever grateful. Unless something fundamentally changes between now and next September I will unfortunately not be able to attend any of the anniversary

Mark Trollope 1993-2001 Helen, the boys and I are still living in Avalon on the Northern Beaches (for Home & Away fans, very close to ‘Summer Bay’) and life is good. Ben will be 11 at the end of February and will be moving into Year 5. Tommy is currently in Year 2 and 7 years old and one of life’s adventurers. Both boys play rugby and are involved in the local Cub group. Last summer Ben was bitten by a Brown Snake but clearly his English blood was too rich and the snake decided not to inject its venom – not a daily or usual occurrence in Oz, but noteworthy. Helen’s housekeeping business is flourishing and has expanded into the area of servicing holiday lets, as well as supporting home organisation and cleaning services. She caught the health bug and has participated in a number of ‘Tough Mudder’ style festivities next year but sincerely hope that everyone who does has a great time. Nick Crocker 1991-1995 (above) Since last writing, I have now launched my new business, Red House Textiles, which I run from a converted stable block behind our house in Suffolk. The company sells textiles, trimmings and some accessories for home soft furnishings. I have curated the collection myself, bringing together things that I love and have used successfully during my career as an interior designer to date. Things have got off to a good start with our first orders being taken before our one month anniversary!

Richard Atkinson 1991-1996 News from this year was that I got married to my now wife Stephanie at Frensham Heights on a very hot day in July (right). It was a fantastic day with lots of people asking if this really was my old school and how lucky I was. Only after you have left do you realise what a special place Frensham is. We keep in contact with a number of staff and students from the 90s and had Gerry Holden to stay in June. The previous year we met up with Pat and John Bayston for dinner and relived many fond memories. Like many, we were terrible saddened by the passing of our dear friend Lynne Elgy. She leaves a huge hole in all our lives but an amazing legacy. (A tribute to Lynne appears on page 21.) Peter de Voil 1993-2003 Peter and Anne de Voil met Erik Szabo for lunch in Cambridge, Massachusetts in August. Erik was an HMC Projects scholar at Frensham Heights from 2000 to 2001, when he returned to Slovakia to finish his schooling. Having been among the top 50 students in the 2001 Chemistry Olympiad while at Frensham, Erik continued to take part in the Chemistry Olympiad in Slovakia. In 2002 and 2003, Erik represented his country at International Chemistry Olympiads in the Netherlands and in Greece. In competition with over 200 students from more than 50 countries, he won two Olympic silver medals for Slovakia. In 2005, he was chosen by the British Council to represent Slovakia at the London Youth Science Forum, to which he returned for several summers as a member of staff,

I have been back to the UK a few times in the last five years, unfortunately never at the same time as Founders’ Day. I look forward to being able to attend one in the near future with my family. Tom Collins 1997-2002 Tom Collins and Nancy Carlisle got married on Saturday 31 May 2014 at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Frensham, followed by a wonderfully fun (and well organised!) reception at Frensham Heights (above). Eugene Berger (OF 1996-02) performed the duties of Best Man and there were many other OFs present, with an increasingly high concentration to be found in the bar as the evening progressed. Tom and Nancy are now living in Leicester. Nancy is a Lecturer in Psychology at University of Leicester and Tom is an Early Career Research Fellow in the Faculty of Technology at De Montfort University.

Charlotte Aldred 2000-2007 After leaving Frensham Heights in 2007, I gained two AS levels from Alton College and started to work as an administrator for a number of years. In 2010, I returned to Alton College to complete an Access to Higher Education course to gain the qualifications required to enter University. I gained a place at the University of Portsmouth in September 2011 to study Environmental Science (BSc) and graduated in the summer of 2014.

My partner of five years, Johan, and I purchased a home together in Fleet in November 2014. Anna Harper 2002-2005 Since I was at Frensham, I did my BA in Land Economy at Cambridge (getting my MA this year). I’ve been working as a Strategy Consultant in the City (London) for three years and this year started up a property sourcing business to help people who want to invest but don’t have the time, knowledge or inclination to do the work themselves. So, it’s all go - very busy but great fun. I really enjoyed catching up with my cohort at Jo Murdoch’s reunion... The facts have changed in everyone’s lives but lovely to have the lasting connection. Holly Dolan-Bibby 2002-2007 I have recently completed my Diploma in Law from BPP

Kate Tidman 2005-2008 I graduated from The University of Kent, Canterbury in 2013 with a BA (Hons) in Drama and Theatre Studies. I live and work in London and am currently working in TV and Media at BT Sport and for shows such as Big Brother, A League of Their Own and the Paralympic Winter Games 2014. David Waker 2005-2008 I left Frensham Heights in 2008 and began college at Goldaming College. I went to the University of East London, where I graduated with a 1st Class BA (Hons) in Dance: Urban Practice. I also travelled to China, part funded by my university, to do a practice based research project for my dissertation and my final project performance. I was training with the Shaolin Monks in Southern Fist Shaolin Kung Fu, in the Fujian Provence for a month. I then took my solo from uni to The Place, London to perform in their Resolutions Season in 2014. I am now returning in 2015 to debut my first group piece with my own dance company: Mountain Tsunami Productions. I am now an evolution company

After spending the last five years in Paris working in hotels and restaurants, I have come back to London! I’m currently a floor manager in a hotel called the Renaissance St. Pancras. Hope all is well back in little Frensham and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

I performed in the 2012 London Olympic Opening Ceremony. Since then I have been a successful dance entrepreneur and have been selected to join “The Fi.ELD” by East London Dance and have ties with Hofesh Shechter Dance Company. On top of this, I am currently in the middle of leasing with the National Ballet School in London.

Ilana Archer-Ebdon 20072012 I am currently living and working in Sydney, my third year as a working and certified Scuba Diver Instructor (below). I’ve worked in Cairns, Mexico and London. At the moment I’m living in a great flat with people from all over the world. If anyone reading this takes one thing away from it: TRAVEL. I’ve met so many great people and friends for life. Also found my passion in life. Diving! I’ve now dived in Cozumel (Mexico), London, Tahiti and Cairns (Great Barrier Reef). I’ve travelled to places like Burma (Myanmar) and Antarctica (which was insane).

Francis (Frank) Williams 2006-2011 I’m currently in my second year of studying History at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, while making the most of the opportunity to travel around Australia and New Zealand. I’m particularly looking at Australian and Asian history, namely the impact of WWI/II on Australia, as well as genocide and insurgency in Cambodia and the Philippines. At the same time I’m training for my Private Pilots’ License between Newcastle Airport and small aerodromes in Australia whenever I get the chance. New Zealand, particularly, has some enjoyable mountainous landscapes to fly across.

Having graduated this past summer with a 2:1 in BSc Psychology from Royal Holloway University of London, I am now studying for my MA in Counselling at Goldsmiths University of London, with hopes of becoming a qualified psychotherapist. Emily Gilmour 2008-2010 My journey into makeup and nails continues and this year I have been working for WAH Nails doing lots of their events including Vans in Manchester, Tommy Hilfiger and a Tia Maria event. I find myself travelling a lot with this company which is always fun. I have recently also done makeup for a music video to be released later this year and once again makeup for an in house film for Unilever. The most exciting thing I have found myself doing this year is the X Factor, where I am the lead assistant which is great fun meeting everyone. Onwards and upwards in the beauty industry and loving it every step of the way .. .other than people who pay my invoices late!

Lynne Elgy 1946-2014 Andrew Fisher writes: Lynne was a wonderful colleague: wise, calm, professional and passionate about young people. She could both laugh with me and at me when I needed it! She was also a ground-breaking Head of Outdoor Ed – starting events that remain at the core of Frensham: surfing, ropes, hill walking – making friends across all ages. She had a knack for getting others to think about themselves or what they were doing. She seemed to see into each of us and encourage us to ask questions. Above all else, Lynne had a wonderful sense of humanity, charm, insight and ‘time’; each conversation or interaction left you feeling valued. It is testament to her that generations of staff and students alike will miss her and will all remember her wonderful qualities.

Pamela Metcalf (nĂŠe Rodway) 1937-1944 Geoff Metcalf, Pamelaâ€™s son, writes: Born in Sale, Cheshire, Pam moved to White Barn, Rowledge in the late 1930s with her parents and brother James (Jim), who also attended the school albeit somewhat later. She attended Frensham Heights from 1937 to 1944. Her time at school stayed with her for the rest of her life as she was often to mention her Headmaster, Paul Roberts, whom she considered to be a great friend. His help and guidance during her time at the school was never forgotten.

keys for car keys, went on to have three children. They relocated from Hampshire to Suffolk in 1963 and went on to have six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. On retirement, Pam and Herbert travelled the world visiting the family and enjoying everything their family achieved. Pam was widowed in 2007 but still kept the determination required to keep visiting everyone whenever possible, her last trip being to Denmark just two months before she died.

Joris Wonders, writes: Elena Lazzari died in July 2014 after having been unwell for a number of years. Several of her friends, including me, Hannah Pretorious (nee Fletcher), Natasha Pilbrow, William Sturgess, Catherine Bloodworth, Giselle Jones, Zoe Suggars (nee Harley) and Camilla Cowling, gathered at the school in October to share fond memories of her. In particular, we talked about her selfless and loving nature, the way she cared for everyone around her and her occasional naughty side.

Elena was only at Frensham for a year but the school meant everything to her. Without doubt her year there was one of the happiest of her life.

A particularly poignant moment was listening to a recording of Elena and Natasha aged 13 discussing their hopes and dreams, and in true Frensham-style what they would do to make the world a better place. In her short life Elena undoubtedly did her

World War 1 Remembered

Staff and students paid a special tribute to mark 100 years since the outbreak of World War One in November 2014 (photographed by a fearless John A from the basket of a cherry picker!). The tribute was particularly poignant as the house had been a military hospital during the war.

OF Reunion On 20 September 2014, a group of Old Frenshamians reunited for the first time in many years. Joanna Murdoch, who works as an Event Co-ordinator at Crazy Cow Events, organised the venue at Sway Bar in Holborn, London. Among those who attended were Sam Rolles, Dave Morris, Freddie Errington, Lizzie Holmes and David Burn, Vicky Stewardson, Anna Flach and Leo Konopizky (who flew in from Germany!) Around 40 OFs attended, some of whom had not seen each other for over 12 years. The night was a

huge success. It was a double celebration as it was Ekin Gecergilâ€™s birthday, so we had an amazing cake created by Izzy and Becky Wood. There are plans to do another event next year and hopefully this could become an annual event with even more people attending!

90 1925-2015 There has been a wonderful response to our invitation to the special 90th Anniversary OF Open Day on Saturday 12 September 2015. 90TH CELEBRATION DINING PACKAGES With so many people coming to the OF Open Day, we’ve thought long and hard about food...and we’ve come up with three options that we hope will match most tastes. Given the numbers, we are asking that you pre-book. We have limited numbers for a formal sit-down meal in the Ballroom but we’ll put together as many hampers and roast as many hogs as required!

PACKAGE ONE HOG ROAST £10 If you’re after a quick, easy and tasty bite, you can book a hog roast bap, complete with stuffing, apple sauce and a side salad. Get a glass of wine or a local beer from the bar, find a nice spot and enjoy. Unfortunately, vegetarian options are not available on this one!

PACKAGE TWO HOG ROAST PICNIC HAMPERS £30 This is no ordinary hamper...this is a Frensham Heights hamper! Filled with lovely picnic foods, salads and homemade chutney and pickle, it’s a perfect meal for two people – and the hamper itself is a great momento of the day. Both meat and vegetarian hampers are available.

Enjoy an elegant three-course lunch with wine and coffee in the beautiful surroundings of the Ballroom. There will be tables of eight – so either book one or two seats, or how about getting a group together? We are limited to just 80 seats so do book quickly if this one’s for you.
