Commissioned in 2018 by the London Mozart Players and composed by Rebecca Dale and poet, Selina Nwulu, STAND is a not-for-profit recording created to raise money for Harmony: Action Through The Arts. This charity promotes music education and performance for young people under the age of 25 who are socially and economically disadvantaged . The song offers a positive message of unity and hope with lyrics reminding us that we are stronger whilst standing together in the face of adversity.

At Frensham Heights we are very excited to be offered the opportunity to perform this extraordinary piece today, and kindly ask that you consider donating to the cause.

From Long Walks to Real Chances: How Frensham Heights is Changing Lives in Malawi

Since 2008, Frensham Heights has partnered with the Malawi Schools Trust to support secondary education in some of Malawi’s poorest communities. What began nearly two decades ago has grown into a sustained relationship spanning seven school trips and a portfolio of projects that are quietly transforming what education looks like for thousands of students.

Why It Matters

For many students in rural Malawi, the school day starts with a 10km walk, classrooms have no desks or chalk, water isn’t piped in, and by 6pm it’s pitch dark, 365 days a year, with no electricity to study by. These aren’t abstract statistics — they’re the daily reality behind two numbers worth remembering: Malawi is the fourth poorest country in the world, and only 7% of its children complete secondary school.

Where the Trust Works

The Trust’s efforts are concentrated across dispersed farming villages with little or no access to electricity or water. At Mtunthama, All Saints School has grown from 300 to over 1,100 students and at Mikuyu, student numbers have grown from 50 to 260. Mandanjala has received electricity, books, lab supplies, bikes and bursaries since 2024, while Mankhaka has had similar support (books, lab supplies, bikes and bursaries) since 2025.

None of this happens without people on the ground: a local lead (Oscar), mothers groups and community leaders work alongside the Trust staff to identify needs and deliver support across four key areas: learning materials (desks, books, laptops, uniforms), access (bikes and hostels), infrastructure (solar power, water, internet, and housing for teachers) and a dedicated focus on girls’ education.

This Term’s Progress

Recent months have seen tangible investment with Starlink internet and laptops being installed, along with teaching essentials. Sixty new bikes were delivered, meaning every partner school now has more than 50 bikes in circulation. New locally made laboratory benches now mean science classes no longer have to take place on the floor, and annual lab supplies for chemistry and physics keep experiments running.

Putting Girls’ Education First

A central thread running through the Trust’s work is girls’ education, tackled from several angles at once. Bikes cut down the time and safety risks of long walks to school giving girls more time to study and helping more of them complete secondary school. Mothers’ groups deliver sexual and reproductive health education and produce menstrual pads. Alongside this, the construction of dedicated changing rooms has contributed to lower dropout rates and fewer early pregnancies. Bursaries help address poverty directly, ensuring cost isn’t the reason a girl’s education is cut short.

Girls’ hostels have proven especially effective. The hostel built at Mikuyu in 2023 gives girls dedicated space and time to study after school and at weekends. Hostel residents consistently rank higher in national exams as a result. Parents contribute a modest £15 per term in fees, which helps keep the model sustainable, while community ownership of the hostels ensures longterm commitment to girls’ education. The evidence is clear: girls who complete secondary school go on to have smaller, healthier and wealthier families.

The Next Project: Madanjala Hostel

Building on this success, the Trust’s next major undertaking is a new hostel at Madanjala, designed to accommodate 50 girls at a cost of £40,000. It’s a genuine partnership: Frensham Heights will contribute through fundraising and school trips, the Malawi Schools Trust will handle project management and additional fundraising, and the Madanjala community itself will provide all the bricks and much of the labour, with parents again paying £15 per term toward sustainability.

Every penny raised makes a direct difference. 100% of donations go straight to supporting the schools in Malawi. Proceeds from all charity stall tokens purchased today will go to Malawi Schools Trust plus we are having a sponsored School Walk on 7th July, with a fundraising target of £100 per student.

From long walks to real chances, every bike, bursary and brick laid is a step toward giving Malawian students, and especially girls, the education they deserve.

WET WEATHER PLANS

We really hope it doesn’t rain...but just in case:

• Music on the Main Stage will remain where it is unless the rain

• Some of the Charity Stalls will continue

• Picnics can be eaten in Main House

• The netball match will be cancelled. The football match will go ahead.

FIRE ALARM

If a fire alarm goes off, please vacate the building you are in. Those at the Main House end of the school should make their way to a fire muster point next to the mushrooms by the treehouse. Those at the Aldridge Theatre end of the school should make their way to a fire muster point on the basketball court by the Sports Hall.

MAJOR EMERGENCY

In the unlikely event of a major emergency on the School site, all visitors are asked to make their way quickly and calmly to assembly points either at the Drop Off Zone or the Sports Field, if these are safe locations, and thereafter to follow the instructions of School staff.

LITTER

Please use the bins provided for any litter or take it away with you. We also ask that you do not take food and drink into the classrooms.

AIR CONDITIONED AREA

If the weather is hot and you would like to cool down for a bit, F22 and F23 classrooms are air conditioned and will be unlocked.
