THE LETTERS OF JOHN A Life of Love · Dr. Chris Montgomery · January 26, 2025 1 John 3:1-24

Five Facts about my relationship with my Father. 1. I am commanded to behold the love of my Father. (1 John 3:1a) See what kind of love the Father has given to us… 2. I am to recognize the kind of love the Father has for me. (1 John 3:1b) See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. 3. I need to recognize the world’s confusion about my relationship with the Father. (1 John 3:1c) The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 4. I need to recognize the world’s confusion about my spiritual family. (1 John 3:2) Beloved, we are God’s children now… 5. I need to remember that my inheritance is not complete. (1 John 3:2) 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. How do I live a life of love to the end of my life? 1. My future hope calls me to deal with my present sin. (1 John 3:3-4) 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. 4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 2. My Savior has come to heal me in my present sin. (1 John 3:5-6) 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 3. My Savior gives me a new set of practices. (1 John 3:7-8) 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.
