THE LETTERS OF JOHN Christ Changes Everything · Dr. Chris Montgomery · Jan. 12, 2025 1 John 2:1-14 John knew who he was in Christ: 1. Disciple 2. Eyewitness 3. Pastor 4. Evangelist for the love of God 5. Old Man 1. My sin breaks God’s heart. (1 John 2:1) 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

2. My sin breaks God’s law. (1 John 2:2) 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

3. My obedience proves my relationship is real. (1 John 2:3-5) 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected.

4. My abiding leads to action. (1 John 2:5-6) 5 By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. (Colossians 2:6-7) 6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. I will never obey until I learn to abide.
