JuST JESuS Dear Frazer Family– The older I get, the more convinced I am that it’s all about Jesus. To experience eternal life, the only way is Jesus. To experience the abundant life that God has planned for you here and now, you must follow Jesus. To transform lives in our city and make a difference in the world, all we have to offer others is Jesus. Not religion, not positive thinking, not even the Frazer Church—just Jesus! I invite you to use this booklet as a tool to discover how you can personally Follow Jesus. You’ll find six key areas: 1. Membership—your initial steps to follow Jesus at Frazer 2. Worship—meeting Jesus in personal and congregational worship 3. Growth—developing a closer walk with Jesus through a small group centered on studying the Bible 4. Serve—following the example of Jesus by serving one another within the church 5. Mission—obeying the command of Jesus to go out beyond the walls of the church to share God’s love 6. Giving—joining together to support the ministry and mission of the church to make more followers of Jesus. Walk through the six steps, then fill out and return your Personal Response Card. My prayer is that more than ever in 2013, every member of Frazer will truly be a follower of Jesus. When that happens, we will change the world!

Part 1:
Membership Church membership at Frazer is more than just signing up to be on the mailing list; it is a vow of personal commitment, similar to a wedding vow, indicating a serious desire to follow Jesus in community with other believers at this local church, which in turn is part of the larger worldwide family of believers who make up the Body of Christ. In other words, you aren’t joining an organization, you are joining a family. You aren’t becoming a member of a club or an institution, you are becoming a part of a movement of God.
Membership Vows This year on your Personal Response Card, if you’re a member we’re asking you to reaffirm your vows of membership which every person is asked when they joined Frazer (or for students, when you went through Confirmation). We want these vows to be more than mere words, so take a moment to review them on the card and renew your commitment to Jesus and His church here at Frazer.
What if I’m not a member? If you would like more information about becoming a member, or about our 3-week new member STEPs classes, check the box on your card. You don’t have to be a member to participate in Followership 2013—you are welcome at Frazer to participate in all the areas of the church—worship, growth, serving, missions and giving—even if you are not a member. However, we hope that after you have spent some time seeking God, you will reach the point of being ready to make the commitment of membership. God has designed each of us with a longing to belong, and you may be surprised what new experiences God will open up for you when you make the leap to commit to His family in the local church. Part 2:
Worship Worship is both a moment by moment lifestyle of loving God and loving our neighbor, and a weekly gathering of the church to honor, praise, glorify and respond to God together. Therefore, there are two parts to the worship commitment on your Personal Response Card:
Worship Together A great first step is to commit to be in worship 24 times this year (approximately every other Sunday). If you’ve only been coming a few times a year, or maybe only on Christmas and Easter, making this commitment can help you begin to make worship a more regular part of your life. A next step commitment is to say, “I’ll attend worship every Sunday I’m physically able.” Sometimes we’re sick or out of town or have family emergencies, but this commitment says that I’m ready to make worship a priority every week that I can possibly come. Check the box for the commitment to worship that you are ready to make.
Personal Worship Worship can also take place at home every day of the week, especially when we devote time to hearing from God through the Bible and sharing our hearts with Him through prayer. A first step is to commit to at least 15 minutes at least once sometime during the week to pray and read the Bible. A next step commitment is to make that 15 minute devotion a part of your daily routine. Check the box for the commitment to personal devotion that you are ready to make. If you aren’t sure how to have a time of Bible study and prayer on your own, you can get more information by checking the box by the last question in the Worship section of your card. 6 MEMBERSHIP
Part 3:
Growth Following Jesus is more than a one-time commitment, it is a daily decision to grow in our faith. Growth takes two key ingredients: God’s Word, and God’s People. That’s why participation in a small group Bible Study is critical to our Followership. Frazer has scores of small groups—classes for men and for women, for couples and for singles, for older adults and younger adults, classes that meet Sunday morning and weekday mornings and weekday evenings, groups that meet at the church and groups that meet in homes or out in the community. You can find the complete current list in our Connections magazine, in the church atrium or online at frazerumc.org/groups.
Finding a Group to Grow A great first step is to commit to participate in at least one short-term Bible Basics class this year. A next step is to commit to participate in an ongoing weekly group. Check the box for the commitment to growth that you are ready to make. If you already have a group (for example, if you are already a member of a Sunday School class), check that box; or you can check the box indicating you need to find a group, and we’ll follow up with you to help you find the group that is right for you.
Helping Others Grow Jesus taught that we are not only to grow ourselves, we should reach a point of maturity when we are ready to help others grow. This is not just for a few people with gifts for teaching or public speaking; anyone can help disciple someone else in a one-on-one mentoring relationship or disciple a small group in your home or workplace. If you’re ready to take the next step and be equipped to help others grow, check the box in the last question in the Growth section. WORSHIP 7
Part 4:
Serve Serving is how we follow the example of Jesus. In John chapter 13, Jesus went out of his way to wash his disciples feet, and explain to them that just as he served, so they should serve. This year, we’re dividing up our opportunities to serve into two parts: ministry opportunities inside the walls of the church, and mission opportunities outside the walls of the church. Both are equally important, so we hope that you’ll select at least one in each area. The ministry opportunities within the church are listed here in Part 4; for the mission opportunities outside the church see Part 5.
7 S teps to Choosing Your Area(s) of Service 1 Pray! Don’t pray about “if” you should serve, pray about “where!” When you come to Him seeking wisdom, ready to obey whatever He reveals, you can be confident He will hear your prayer. 2 Investigate the Options Read through this opportunities book carefully. Feel free to call the church staff to find out more about a ministry. Even if you have served in the same area for years, become familiar with other areas of service so you can remain open to the Holy Spirit’s leading. 3 Discover Your Gifts Every Christian has a Spiritual Gift given by God to accomplish His plan for your life. See Romans 12, I Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4 in your Bible. For more information about spiritual gifts, check the box for the last question in the Serve section of your response card and we will follow up with you. 4 Consider Your Strengths In addition to your Spiritual Gift, your natural abilities can guide your choice of service as well. • Life Experiences can give you insight and sympathy to help others going through similar situations. • Special Knowledge such as medical training, technical skills, or construction expertise can open doors for ministry. • Talents such as musical, artistic or athletic ability can and should be used to glorify God. 5 Ask Your friends Serving with others you know can be a great way to enjoy fellowship. But don’t limit yourself: volunteering together can also be a great way to meet new people. 6 do Something! Even if you aren’t sure what to do, sign up for something. A Word about Children and Youth Every ministry area to every age group at Frazer is important. Because our nursery, children’s ministry, and student ministry require large numbers of volunteers to be successful and are vital to our mission, we would like to urge you to give extra consideration to whether God may be calling you to serve in one of these areas. If you are a parent: We strongly encourage you to volunteer in some capacity in the ministry area where your child attends. Serving together is an important way that we can partner with you in building a spiritual foundation for your child, and a wonderful way for you to know more about your son or daughter and his or her peers. If you are not CURRENTLY parenting: Don’t think that you can’t serve! Young Adult, Older Adult or in between, anyone can make a difference in the life of a child, and your willingness to serve someone else’s child may be the key to that parent being reached for Christ.

MUSIC MINIS TRIES Leading people in worship through excellent music and training up generations of passionate worshippers Code

001 Sanctuary Choir Weekly 3 hrs Rehearse on Wednesday nights from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. and sing for at least two of the Sunday morning sanctuary services. Varies 002 Instrumentalist We need everything from contemporary band players (drums, guitars, bass, etc), to orchestra players, to piano accompanists. Most playing will be as needed, although the orchestra meets each Wednesday night from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. You will be contacted about which part of the music program you wish to be involved with. Weekly 003 Speeders Choir-Older Adult Rehearse each Tuesday afternoon, 1:15-2:15 p.m.; sing at nursing homes and church functions. Weekly 1 hr 004 ORBIT Children’s Music Leader Adult music teachers with competent skills to teach music to an appropriate age level. Also needed are pianists with proficiency to accompany children’s choirs. Orbit meets weekly on Wednesdays from 6-7:15 p.m. during the school year. 073 Zoo Day Helper Annual 4 hrs Assist with annual Singles project to allow mentally challenged adults and children to experience a day at the Montgomery Zoo as a demonstration of the love of Christ. Friday opportunities include preparing gift bags and lunch sacks; Saturday opportunities include unloading guests from vehicles, escorting them through the Zoo, help with lunch, and loading guests into their vehicles for departure. Weekly 2 hrs 074 DivorceCare for Kids Helper Help with DivorceCare for Kids (DC4K) program as a teacher or assistant on Tuesday evenings from 5:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Lovingly help children ages 5 and up learn coping skills and to understand the feelings associated with their parents’ divorce. 13-week sessions begin in January and September. Weekly 1 1/2 hrs 075 Singles Small Group Leader Lead small group studies offered on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. throughout the year. Varies 162 Transform Montgomery Project: Circles The unique approach of the Transform Montgomery project is that rather than tell families in poverty what they must do in order to receive a hand-out from the church, it empowers families to identify for themselves how they can transition out of poverty and then brings a “circle” of allies from the church alongside them to provide resources and support. Allies can bring a wide variety of skills to the circle: financial management, home or vehicle maintenance, parenting, tutoring and education, job skills development, and other life skills. Giving
The last section of your Followership Personal Response Card is your opportunity to make a pledge to give to the church to support our lifetransforming local ministries and world-changing local missions. The Bible teaches that when we choose to partner with other Christians here and around the world, we become a part of their ministry and God will bless and reward us just as if we had gone and done that ministry ourselves (see Philippians 1:3-8, 4:14-19). We also grow in unity and in love for one another when we share one another’s financial burdens (2 Corinthians 8:1-15).
Ministry Budget A first step in giving, if you have only been giving on a sporadic basis, is to make a commitment to give something regularly. Even if you can only afford a small amount, the decision to make giving a commitment instead of an option is itself an act of worship. The Bible teaches us to move towards giving a “tithe,� or 10% of your income or beyond. Many people in Frazer have shared that, while they might have thought tithing would be very difficult if not impossible for them, once they made the commitment to do it they discovered unexpected blessings that made it possible for them to not only give 10% joyfully, but even to make investments beyond that amount. Early Debt Retirement At our current rate, Frazer will pay off the debts incurred from our last building expansion in less than three years. The sooner we pay it, the less interest we will be charged and the more money we can put towards future ministries and missions. Frequently Asked Questions About Giving 1. What is the purpose of a giving pledge? Making a commitment to give is an act of worship and an expression of gratitude to God. On a practical level, your commitments allow Frazer to better budget and plan our ministries. 2. What is the difference between a “tithe” and an “offering”? A tithe is the first tenth of your income. An offering is any gift above and beyond that amount. Scripture teaches that God blesses the obedience of tithing, and that there are great spiritual rewards for giving offerings, since the more we “sow” the more we will “reap.” 3. What if I want to make a pledge, but I’m not sure what my income will be? Your pledge is ultimately between you and God, and He knows what the future holds. Make your best estimate of what you feel led by him to give by faith, and then trust Him to provide your needs. If your income changes unexpectedly, God will certainly know and understand what you are able to give. 4. In what ways can I give? You may place an envelope with cash or check in the collection basket during worship services, mail or drop off your gift during the week to the church office, schedule an Electronic Funds Transfer, or give online at www.frazerumc.org. Gifts of stock, endowments and other assets may also be set up through Frazer’s Charitable Trust Fund coordinator. 5. Can I schedule recurring donations? Yes. Electronic gifts can be scheduled once or twice a month. 6. What are the pros and cons of online giving? Online giving is convenient and safe, easy to track and easy to schedule on a regular basis. However, there are small fees charged by banks and credit card companies that will reduce the amount of your gift that reaches the church. Those who give online may wish to increase the amount given slightly to cover those fees. 7. Will I receive a contribution statement?
