Order of Worship June 30, 2024 Every Sunday when we worship, we are transformed from individuals into a Body—a united community, the People of God. As we come together, we embark on a journey, out of the world and into the Presence of God. We are changed by that encounter, and afterwards we are sent back out into the world, scattering across our region to carry the blessings of God wherever we go throughout the week. In the italicized notes below, we mark the stages of today’s journey together.
Prelude: “Battle Hymn of the Republic”.......................... Kelley Garrett & Dr. Sallye York Call to Worship........................................................................................................Choir This opening song is more than a way to start the service. It is a reminder that we are called by God—invited to come out of the world and come together into the posture of praise. Sung by the choir, we are reminded that as we come, we join the choirs of angels that worship God eternally in the heavens.
Apostles’ Creed..........................................................................................................Kelly Slover By reciting the core beliefs of the Church that have been handed down for generations, we link ourselves to the Story of God that has been in motion from long before we were even born. The Apostles Creed dates to the 3rd Century AD and is shared by Christians around the world.
The Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick* and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Quick is a traditional term for “living;” Catholic means “universal.”
Hymn 477: “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus”................................................ Congregation As we come into God’s presence, our gaze is shifted from ourselves to our Creator, and our natural response is praise for God’s greatness and thanksgiving for His goodness. By singing together, we become more than individuals—we are united as a People of God.
Welcome & Announcements........................................................................Jerrod Dorminey By recognizing those who join us through media, and praying for another church or missionary, we remind ourselves that our local worship is part of a much greater movement, the Body of Christ around the world and the Kingdom of God in every nation. In worship, we recognize that God is the source of all blessings and the owner of all things. As an act of gratitude, we return a portion of our blessings to support the ongoing mission of the Church and share with those in need through its ministries.
