Meet Joanne She/Her
Library Officer and Crafty Connections Lead When Jo first walked into the library back in 2008, the power was out-but something sparked for her that day. After spending time at home and facing some mental health challenges, Jo was looking for purpose and a safe space. Volunteering at the library gave her both. “It was love at first sight,” she says. “The library became a place where I felt supported and had an identity outside of being a mum.” Jo started as a volunteer, shelving books and keeping things tidy, and soon moved into a casual role. Over the years, she’s worn many hats—from helping at outreach services to becoming a familiar, friendly face in the library community. Her passion for craft and connection led to the creation of Crafty Connections, a program that’s now three years strong.
“I always wondered what it would be like to run a library program,” Jo shares. “Craft was a natural fit for me.” What began as a simple idea has grown into a vibrant community where friendships flourish-some participants even meet up outside the library! Recently, a group of younger members went out for lunch together after a session, a testament to the bonds being formed. For Jo, the magic lies in bringing people together. “I love seeing how the library becomes so important to others, just like it was for me when I needed a safe space.” When she’s not at the library, Jo enjoys crafting at home, tending her garden, and diving into Australian historical romance novels. She’s also a big fan of the library’s Seed Library, which she describes as “hands-on, grassroots, and mindful—a way to connect with the earth and each other.” Jo sums up her approach to life with a smile: “If I were a character, I’d be the Rainbow Fish-colourful, kind, and generous.” Want to join the fun?
