Greetings, Franklin College alumni and friends! As Franklin College charts its course for the future, our commitment to the liberal arts remains unwavering. We recognize that the strengths of a traditional liberal arts education — critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, collaboration and the ability to communicate effectively — are more vital today than ever. That reality is reinforced frequently by employers across all sectors of today’s economy. At the same time, we are embracing new opportunities presented by modern disciplines, ensuring our academic offerings evolve in step with industry, student demand and an economy that is redefining itself almost daily. Today’s employers are seeking graduates who understand the complexities of an interconnected world and can translate that knowledge into real-world solutions. This intersection — where timeless intellectual skills meet contemporary professional demand — is where Franklin College continues to excel. Our development of a digital fluency program throughout the entire curriculum three years ago has positioned Franklin as a leader among liberal arts schools in embedding tech proficiency as an essential element of undergraduate education. An academic major in video game development and a competitive esports program followed, both of which have proven successful. Most recently, we received approval for a new major in cybersecurity within the computer science department. There are today over 600,000 unfilled cybersecurity positions in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Employment of information security analysts is projected to grow 33 percent from 2023 to 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations. About 17,300 openings for information security analysts are projected each year, on average, over the decade.”
This course of study embodies the integration of technical expertise with foundational liberal arts skills, reflecting the unique strengths of each and the collective power of both in preparing students for the world that awaits them. In my 2021 inaugural address, I promised, “As innovation arrives, and it must, it will enhance, not supplant, our commitment to the liberal arts.” We are living out that commitment with our new academic programs aligned with the needs and demands of today’s economy, while grounded in the essential foundation of the liberal arts. This is an incredibly exciting time in the life of Franklin College, and we are proud and grateful for your continued support of our mission.
