EDITORIAL

Editorial design reflects the culture and society of the time in which it is produced. It not only includes print media, but also digital formats. Many newspapers and magazines are published online and need a specific design to reach their audience. The development of publications for tablets is on the rise, as are mobile applications for different books. The magazine designs, in fact, are based on a clear typographic composition, from the main text to the title. Finding the right typography pattern and class will help the magazine in general and its publications in particular to find their specific voice and attract readers. There are many different approaches, but one of the most important is minimalism. Some complementary features can create more impact especially when we talk about choosing fonts for the news itself, which we want this to be our current image. This edition aims to generate a more practical and readable number, modern and bold.

UNA DE LAS LIBRERÍAS MÁS HERMOSAS DEL MUNDO ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOKSTORES IN THE WORLD El Ateneo Grand Splendid es una librería ubicada en el barrio de Recoleta, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It is an allegorical representation of peace, painted in 1919 as a celebration for the end of the First World War. . Peace is represented by a sensual female figure that is painted on a staircase surrounded by flowers. The different representatives of the world in conflict support her, celebrating the restoration of her power. Garlands of flowers, clouds that have left behind the stormy war. EN -

Nota principal . Main note

The current building was begun in 1917 and opened in May 1919 by Austrian-born businessman Max Glücksmann. He commissioned its construction in order to install a cinema-theater on the foundations of what was once the North National Theater. Designed by the architects Peró and Torres Armengol and built by the architects Pizoney and Falcope, the brand new theater was called “Gran Splendid”.8 It had four rows of boxes and an audience with capacity for 500 people. Great personalities paraded in it of tango such as Ignacio Corsini, Roberto Firpo (who dedicated the tango Gran Splendid to him, in 1927) and Carlos Gardel, who began recording for the Nacional Odeón label (currently EMI), in 1920, which Glücksman had installed in the building. There are those who affirm that in this place Glücksmann taught Gardel how he could do to give more power to his voice in the recordings: standing behind a chair and holding the back with his hands, so as to be able to expand his rib cage. . The room where Gardel recorded still exists in the building, but it is not open to the public. Between 1919 and 1982 it functioned as a theater and the most talented Argentine and foreign artists performed on its stage. The last theatrical work presented here was Perciavalle in full color, by Carlos Perciavalle in 1982. Between 1924 and 1930, Glücksmann contributed to the development of River Plate music through special events, particularly with the stimulating Concursos del Gran Splendid. From 1982 to 1999 it worked as a movie theater.

One of the institutional pillars of Malba is the exhibition of its artistic heritage. The museum’s permanent collection, dedicated to the production of Latin America, is made up of 400 works by 160 artists ranging from the beginnings of modernity to the most recent productions of contemporary art, including works from Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Mexico , Ecuador, Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, among other countries. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, collages, photography, video, installations and objects show the variety and complexity of the art of the region, through a set organized into four basic nuclei: the different variants of modernity and the Latin American avant-garde of the years twenty; a set of paintings from the 1930s and 1940s showing the diversity of surrealism and the affirmation of the art/politics debate; a third sector exhibits abstract and concrete trends, from Madí art to kinetic art; and the last part dedicated to contemporary art with works of new figuration, pop, conceptualism and minimalism from the 60s and 70s, among other works. In 2004, Malba began an Acquisitions Program with the aim of expanding the collection towards contemporary art and completing its historical heritage. The program is financed by the Costantini Foundation, the Friends of Malba Association and a group of individuals, foundations and companies that generously participate in the call. Added to these actors is the arteBA Gallery Fair which, since 2005, has invited Malba and other museums in the country to participate in its Matching Funds program, sponsored by the Zurich company. The American Express Foundation also joins, donating a piece within the framework of the Buenos Aires Photo fair. The Acquisitions Program has already allowed the museum to add 100 works by the main exponents of local contemporary art, thus expanding its collection. Since its foundation, Malba has sought to constantly expand its collection of Argentine and Latin American art, in addition to the quality of works offered to the public. Donations from individuals and institutions, as well as the strategy of requesting works on loan, in loans for extended periods of time, are fundamental and necessary to continue expanding the museum’s heritage. The donations received EN -

are exposed to the public with a special acknowledgment to the donor, with the express mention of the origin of the work and its form of admission to the museum. Likewise, the loans express in the gallery the collection from which they come and are opportunely integrated into the publications of the collection.

The Malvinas and South Atlantic Islands Museum was created in June 2014 by the Argentine government and has been operating on the premises that belonged to the Navy Mechanics School, in Buenos Aires, since June 10. The museum depends on the Ministry of Culture of the Nation. The objectives of this museum are: EN -

1. Disseminate, communicate, exhibit and make all the inhabitants of the nation aware of Argentine sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands and South Atlantic Islands, particularly South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. 2. Promote the vindication of the Malvinas Cause as an Argentine, Latin American and universal cause. 3. Disseminate and intervene in issues related to the claim of national sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands within the framework of the democratic pillars and the principles of Peace, Memory, Truth and Justice. 4. Remember and pay tribute to the Argentines who gave their lives and in defense of the Malvinas Islands throughout our history as a Nation. 5. Organize and promote activities, conferences, symposiums and events in the country and in the region, aimed at reinforcing the preceding actions. The museum is interactive and in each station of the four into which it is divided there are “sensory experiences”, from the characteristic wind of the islands and the sea, to the sound of war planes. It also includes a memorial to those who fell in the 1982 war, in an open square that can be reached through a pier that connects the museum with an open-air space, which recreates the geography and landscape of the islands that our heroes fought, as well as their flora and fauna. The museum building has three levels. Its exhibitions and rooms pay homage to the people, mainly Argentines, who participated in the history of the islands and include

aspects of nature (flora and fauna) and geography of the archipelago, showing itself as an insular extension of Patagonia. The rooms have audiovisual samples that include LCD and touch technology support. Historical objects, literary texts, images, paintings, letters and historical documents, ambient sound, photographs, maps and plans are exhibited. In the historical sector, the war of 1982 is included, as well as the occupation of 1833 and the resolutions of the United Nations on the territorial dispute.

The Ateneo Grand Splendid tops several records: it is the largest bookstore in South America, it was chosen by the British newspaper The Guardian as the second best bookstore in the world and the American magazine National Geographic highlighted it as the most beautiful. Hundreds of people pass through here every day who never cease to marvel at the spectacle that surrounds them. Because while you can buy music, movies and books, entering this place is a unique experience in itself that is indescribable. The bookstore was inaugurated on December 4, 2000 but the building retains the former splendor and elegance of the Grand Splendid theater of the early twentieth century: with its original railings, intact decoration and an imposing EN -

dome with frescoes, 20 meters in diameter. The motif chosen to decorate the “sky” of the place is a representation of peace, something very significant and beautiful since it was made by Nazareno Orlandi in 1919, just the same year in which the First World War had ended. On the old stage – with the velvet curtain slightly open – there is a bar that invites you to sit down, book in hand. You can also take advantage of the armchairs that are on both sides of the main room or sit in the exclusive boxes that function as small reading rooms. In the basement there is a sector dedicated to children’s books, and the upper floor is usually the one chosen for samples and exhibitions of authors. The Grand Spendid Theater opened its doors in 1919 and quickly became one of the beacons of the City’s culture, hosting major concerts, ballets, operas, and iconic plays like 40 Carats. In this same place, a sound film was shown for the first time in the country (The Divine Lady, in 1929). In turn, it was where the Nacional Odeón label (today known as EMI) operated, in which, in 1920, Carlos Gardel’s career began. The recording room still exists, although it cannot be visited. It also housed the headquarters of Radio Splendid, which began broadcasting and was the first station in which the legendary tango singer sang with his great voice. Although the theater stopped working at the end of the 1980s, the cinema continued to function until 1999. After being closed for a few months, and after an investment of 3 million dollars, it was converted into the bookstore that we know today.

The Ateneo is one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, said this by the famous British magazine “The Guardian” and by National Geographic in 2019. It is known for being located where the well-known Grand Splendid theater used to be, preserving the artitecture of such theater, modifying small sectors so that its function as a bookstore is possible. EN -

“I never thought to see so many young people interested in books today” - Hernan Puglicari, Employee of the Ateneo. Despite the fact that today’s society thinks that young people are not interested in reading and that it is an art that is gradually being left behind, it is a very wrong idea, since this beautiful bookstore is visited every day thousands of young people, thus creating that its most current public is that of young adults. The beauty that is part of the bookstore and its wide variety of books invites readers and non-readers to enjoy an extensive search for books for everyone’s taste. Many young people opt for its variety of youth books, which include within it the wide variety of publishers that are dedicated to a young audience, and can also enjoy the well-known Harry Potter luggage, in which you can take photos even if you are fan or not of the saga in question.

Social networks and word of mouth deepened the habit of reading among young people. Read, share and create reading communities. The idea of the student in white overalls reading while sitting in front of a blackboard freezes and becomes anachronistic. “Young people are crossed in their daily life by storytellings: in an app like Instagram they share texts; advertisements are scripts; video games have plot. And, thus, the permeability of young people to read stories is immense”, suggests Ferrari.

“The ‘boys don’t read’ thing is nothing more than an adult and intellectually elitist prejudice - adds Melisa Corbetto, editor of the youth label VRYA-. The boys read a lot. More than most adults and without a doubt in a freer and more unprejudiced way”.

The Colón Theater is an opera house in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Due to its size, acoustics and history, it has come to be considered one of the best lyrical theaters in the world. According to a survey carried out by the acoustics expert Leo Beranek among leading international opera and orchestra directors, the Teatro Colón has the room with the best acoustics for opera. This incredible and wonderful theater decided to open one of its secrets to the public, behind the scenes. We all know how magic arises with a good stage design, and the theater decided to open its doors so that those who are interested can view and discover the different productions that are part of the colon, everything that one does not see from the seat of the seat. The Teatro Colón is one of the few theaters in the world that can carry out the productions of its shows entirely in its own workshops. Its stage staff makes it possible by keeping alive theatrical trades that are passed down from generation to generation. These tasks are carried out in their scenic workshops located in the basement of the theater, a few meters from the Obelisk, and in others located in the Chacarita neighborhood. The production of each title takes several weeks to complete. Some, up to four months. Until now, after the premiere and the scheduled performances, the sets were scrapped due to the difficulty of storing them, which affected their preservation and the possibilities of being reused.

The exhibition Aó. Textile episodes of the visual arts in Paraguay presents 16 works produced between 1993 and 2022 that recover textile practices in the work of ten artists closely linked to Paraguay: Marcos Benítez, Félix Cardozo, Claudia Casarino, Feliciano Centurión, Arnaldo Cristaldo, Ricardo Migliorisi , Mónica Millán, Osvaldo Salerno, Joaquín Sánchez and Karina Yaluk. Some of them adopt traditional types of weaving (such as ñandutí, aó po’í, poyví and yú lace, with deep pre-colonial and colonial roots) to explore local issues in the present. Others renew embroidery, printing or assembly operations to weave stories about the role of women, work, the environment, the language that inhabits us and its translations. Aó resignifies a poetry of the textile that keeps the thread of shared daily stories.

“From its many faces, the history of Paraguay has always been crossed by fabric. Aó is the word in Guarani that names all its possibilities: attire, adornment, coat. In each weave an alphabet shape is put into play. The hands link, assume warp and plot, record their own stories thread by thread. Paraguayan popular fabrics tell stories of the people who make them (mostly women) and use them in the domestic or work environment. explains the curator Lía Colombino, Director of the Museum of Indigenous Art of the Museo del Barro. When contemporary art summons traditional textiles, it usually does so by recovering that domesticity, fascinated by a work that insists on its craftsmanship or by the use of some of its elements. “In this procedure, the stories change: the textiles of popular use create new discourses in works whose aesthetic codes in the first instance would be alien to them”, highlights the curator. The works of Claudia Casarino, Mónica Millán, Arnaldo Cristaldo, Félix Cardozoy Joaquín Sánchez bring up embroidery, lace, traditional fabrics; There is in these works something of the traditionally feminine work, something emancipatory in that construction of life by pure stitch. And everything that keeps that work: the beauty of leisurely time and crossed by healds, by wefts, by warps, but also the meaning that is kept in a piece of ñanduti or starched ao po’i. traces adhere. “Yes, I wanted” (2021) by Joaquín Sánchez. In his work, Joaquín Sánchez recovers and reinterprets this world based on craftsmanship through a heart made of ñandutí —an important symbol of Paraguay— on a wedding dress enclosed in a glass box. Around him, some spiders weave his web, invoking the Guarani word that gives its name to this type of lace. In this imposition of the heart there is a clarification: the place that marriage occupies in the social assignment given to women and the life dedicated to the task of embroidery and being a family breadwinner. “This anatomical lace heart that Joaquín Sánchez puts on the dress refers to the history of textiles and women in Paraguay. Ñandutí means spider web and that is why these industrious spiders are here. But weaving also has to do with another issue: it implies a space of its own for thought, a space where women are not disturbed, where they can have a certain autonomy. An autonomy that in turn is economic: the ñandutí is a lace that helps the economic emancipation of women”, explains Lía Colombino, curator of the exhibition. We especially thank the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve for providing us with access to their property, where the spiders that are part of this facility come from. Throughout the process and weekly, they are in the care of a biologist who controls their diet and habitat.

To understand the psychology of art, one must know the life and work of Lev Vigotski, the first step in an art revolution in the academic environment that would be consummated decades later with the recognition of the arts as necessary means for humanity as a whole and not only for an artistic oligarchy. It was in 1920, in post-revolutionary Russia, this psychologist thought that work had been the means that had allowed evolution from a socio-historical point of view, so that the culture and wealth of the human being lie in the occupation understood as a means to feel fuller. For him, the highest expression of civilization was culture and art. In his analysis and essays, what is paramount is the complementarity of technique with creativity. As he himself would recognize: “we can all have a Raphael within us but without the techniques or the related progress, without a specific division of labor or an organization of society, he may never reach his potential”. Between 1915 and 1922, he wrote his best-known essay: the doctoral thesis on the Psychology of art that would set a precedent in the psychological field since this work was so controversial in its time because, for the first time, the term “unconscious” was used to describe it. EN -

define the essential aspect of art. For Vygotsky, artistic creation was “a sublimation of sexual energy that led to creation instead of directly sexual instincts.” I wasn’t so wrong as painting has been found to be an activity that releases dopamine (a hormone that provides a feeling of reward and is linked to most addictions, including sexual desire) and endorphins (a set of hormones of well-being and that are released with exercise, massages, relaxing baths, social relationships, sex, etc.). Nowadays it is also known that any artistic manifestation is synonymous with happiness and that the feeling one has when a work of art is finished is very similar to that one experiences when one has children. We live in the century of “scientific” pseudosciences. Art therapy is mental training that would not fit into these categories because to carry out this activity you only need to acquire basic instruments and start painting. The benefits obtained through this art therapy are: the development of social skills, the release of stress and anxiety, psychological well-being and behavior control.
