Around the Table, Growing in Faith “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” — Acts 2:42 people participated in our various Wednesday evening programs. It was exciting to see children, young adults, parents, grandparents, longtime members, and newcomers filling our church with conversation, laughter, music, learning, and fellowship. And this is only the beginning! REV. DR. BOB FULLER

One of the most beautiful snapshots of the early church is found in Acts 2:42–47. The first Christians did not simply gather for a worship service and then go their separate ways. They shared life together. They learned together, prayed together, ate together, served one another, and opened their lives and homes to one another. At the heart of this community was spiritual fellowship. They were growing in faith not only through what they heard, but through the relationships they formed. Their fellowship helped them discover that following Jesus is not a solitary journey. God gives us one another so that we can encourage, teach, challenge, comfort, and care for each other as we grow in Christ. That is one of the hopes and dreams behind our new Wednesday Evening Dinner and Program at First Presbyterian Church. What a wonderful beginning we had on September 9! More than 100 people of all ages gathered for dinner, and more than 200

Each Wednesday evening, we have an opportunity to come together around the table and then to grow in faith through a wide variety of programs. Our evening includes Adult Bible Studies and specialty workshops, Alpha gatherings for those exploring Christianity for the first time, Choir and Bell Choir rehearsals, Music with Families, a Children’s Catechism class, Children’s Choir, and classes and opportunities especially designed for young adults. For more information about Wednesday Nights @ FPC and opportunities for all ages, see page 7. And, of course, there is the wonderful family meal served in Westminster Hall from 5:30–6:30 PM. That meal is more than simply a convenient way to get dinner in the middle of a busy week. It is an opportunity to sit at a table with people we might not otherwise know. It is a chance for generations to meet one another. It is a place where conversations begin, friendships grow, and the church becomes less like a building we visit and more like a family in which we belong.

Acts tells us that the early Christians were “breaking bread at home and eating their food with glad and generous hearts.” There is something profoundly Christian about gathering around a table. We remember that Jesus himself often taught, welcomed, forgave, and revealed God's love around meals. Our Wednesday evenings are an invitation to rediscover that kind of community. Perhaps you have been looking for a place to deepen your own faith. Perhaps you have questions about Christianity and would appreciate a safe place to explore them. Perhaps your children need opportunities to learn and grow in their faith. Perhaps you love music and want to sing or ring with others. Perhaps you are a young adult looking for community. Or perhaps you simply need a place to come, share a meal, meet some people, and remember that you are not alone. Come and be part of it. You do not have to have everything figured out before you come. You do not need to know everyone. You simply need to come with an open heart and a willingness to share in the life of this community. The church described in Acts 2 was a community that learned, prayed, ate, worshiped, served, and grew together. By God's grace, we have the opportunity to cultivate that same spirit here at First Presbyterian Church.

Wednesday Nights @ FPC Are Off to a Great Start! Wednesday Nights began September 9 with more than 100 people gathering for dinner and more than 200 participating in programs throughout the church. Westminster Hall filled with conversation as families, friends, and newcomers shared a meal. Children enjoyed music and learning, adults gathered for classes and support, and musicians returned to rehearsals. From exploring faith to making wreaths and bows, the evening offered opportunities to connect across generations. How Deacons Help Us Care for One Another A hospital stay. The loss of someone you love. A season when getting to church becomes difficult. At times like these, staying connected to your church family can make a difference. FPC’s Deacons help nurture those connections, offering spiritual care that puts “Love One Another” into practice. Some of their ministry happens on Sunday mornings, when Deacons are available to pray after each worship service. Much of it takes place throughout the week, through visits, phone calls, and personal notes.

Deacons also partner with Elders to bring Home Communion several times a year to Covenant Partners who wish to receive it but are unable to attend worship. Prayer runs throughout this ministry, as Deacons lift up needs shared through Care and Concern emails and concerns brought to them personally. You can help connect someone with this care. If you or someone you know would welcome a visit, prayer, or support, please reach out. Sharing a need helps our church family respond with love.

When requested, Deacons visit Covenant Partners in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. They also connect with those at home through visits, calls, mail, emails, or texts, helping them remain part of the life of our congregation. For those grieving the death of a close loved one, Deacons offer continued contact and visits. Seasonal deliveries of poinsettias and Easter lilies bring a reminder of the church’s love to Covenant Partners, including those who have experienced a recent loss, those receiving home visits, and older members of our congregation.

For 18 years, Stephen Ministry has helped our church offer compassionate, confidential care to people facing difficult seasons. A new training class begins Tuesday, September 22, 6:00–8:30 PM. A New Chapter for Kyle Bowden and FPC Student Ministry Kyle Bowden has accepted a new role as Director of University Ministry at First Presbyterian Church, effective immediately. Following several months of prayer and conversations with committees and senior staff, Kyle sees this transition as a response to God’s leading. While his role is changing, Kyle is looking forward to continuing the relationships he has built with students and families. He describes serving in Student Ministry as one of the greatest joys and honors of his life. Student Ministry will continue under the leadership of Preston Miller in High School Ministry and Savannah Schatte in Middle School Ministry. Cara Taylor, MDiv, will provide leadership and oversight for ministries with children, students, and their families, and Mike Meadows will continue as Student Committee Chair. Faithful teachers, mentors, volunteers, and parents will remain an essential part of this community. Sunday classes, small groups, retreats, mission trips, Student Worship, Confirmation, and other ministry opportunities will continue. Kyle will remain closely involved throughout September to support a smooth transition. Showing Up for Our Hill Country Neighbors Flood recovery continues long after the headlines fade. For FPC, that means continuing to serve, gathering around a table, and staying connected with our Hill Country neighbors. Following the devastating July 4, 2025, flood, this summer brought another painful setback. Flooding on July 16, 2026, reached properties untouched the year before and damaged some spaces still being rebuilt. We grieve with families who lost loved ones and pray for all who face the difficult work of recovery. FPC members have continued to respond through hands-on service, including an August 15 work trip and volunteering with Operation Blessing. Its response has included helping families salvage belongings, removing debris, and preparing meals for affected families and volunteers. Relationships remain an important part of that response. For the second consecutive year, teachers and staff from Hunt ISD were invited to share a BBQ dinner with FPC participants during the Young Adult Kickoff Retreat on August 29. The invitation continued connections formed after last year’s flood and sustained through this year.

FPC’s Presbyterian Disaster Ministries team is also exploring ways to support Christ Church Presbyterian in Kerrville, where flooding damaged newly remodeled spaces, including its children’s education area. FPC Covenant Partner Pam Clack helped connect the congregations. Christ Church members have done much of the cleanup, but rebuilding needs still remain. Through practical help, shared meals, and prayer, we can continue walking alongside our neighbors as they recover. The Kingdom Restoration Lab (KRL) brings churches, organizations, and leaders together to work toward restoration for our neighbors, neighborhood, and city. Through its Resource Room and ministry partners, KRL offers practical support, prayer, and caring relationships that share the love of Christ. EXPLORE GLOBAL MISSIONS AT FPC THIS OCTOBER Global Missions Month begins October 4 with World Communion Sunday, celebrating our connection with Christians around the world. That connection is personal for FPC: our Poland Mission Team, including two of our pastors, will serve with the Novus Foundation in Warsaw October 11–18. Throughout October, you’re invited to learn about the people and ministries FPC supports and discover how you can participate. Five displays planned for the first floor will feature Mission South, Africa, Muslim World, Asia, and Europe. You don’t need missions experience. Bring your curiosity and take a few minutes to explore.

Visit One Display Before or after worship, or during a weekday visit, stop to look at the photos and read about a ministry partner. Learn about the people they serve and the challenges they face in sharing the gospel.

Take a Prayer Request with You Choose a request and write it down or take a photo to remember it during the week. You may learn about an “unreached people group”—a community with little access to the gospel. Pray for that community and those working to share Christ’s love there.

MAKE A CONNECTION THAT LASTS At FPC, Mission Champions work in teams to build relationships with ministry partners and help our congregation participate. They stay in touch, learn from partners, pray with them, offer encouragement, and help others find ways to serve. As you explore the displays, notice which ministry catches your attention. Ask about joining a champion team to get to know that partner and discover how your gifts can contribute. You don’t have to do this alone. Praying for Our Schools in 2026 Back to School Prayer at the Flagpole

Thank you to all who prayed and participated in the 2026 Back to School Prayer at the Flagpole initiative! God was honored and San Antonio schools were lifted up in prayer on Sunday, August 16. Reports from several campuses described strong attendance as people gathered to pray for teachers, students, and staff—for their safety, protection, and a healthy learning environment. At one local school, the superintendent, athletic director, and high school vice principal joined parents and students in prayer. Other schools reported teachers gathering alongside parents and students, with attendance at some gatherings reaching 75 or more.

Lock the Shields, a collaborative Christian prayer movement, also reported prayer gatherings and prayer walks at more than 75 campuses across the city on August 11. I can’t think of a better way to send our teachers and students back to school than with prayer! Please continue to pray for our schools and for all who enter them. President's Letter Sept/Oct 2026 What a wonderful Kickoff Sunday! It was so great to see so many new faces alongside the familiar faces I see each Sunday. I can’t wait to see many of you at the upcoming WOC events. September starts off with the Circles’ Bible study meetings. Many Circles are studying Max Lucado’s book, Unshakable Hope - Building Our Lives on the Promises of God. If you are not yet attending a Circle, know that you are always welcome to visit and join at any time. Please contact Wendy Garcia, and she can help you find a Circle that meets your needs. I will be visiting the Circles in September and hope to see you there. One of the big social events happening in October will be Ladies Night Out on Tuesday, October 13, from 6:00–8:00 PM at the home of Susan DeKoch. Please sign up before October 13. Tables in the Mauzé Lobby will have signup information in advance of the event.

Another wonderful event happening in October is the Presbyterian Children's Home and Services (PCHAS) Fall Luncheon. It will be held at the San Antonio Country Club on Tuesday, October 27. Please contact your PCHAS liaison, Sallie Guy if you are interested in attending and hearing from the PCHAS families who have benefited from this important agency, which WOC has supported for years. Since my theme this year centers on hope, I wondered if you have noticed the symbols in our church that represent hope. Nancy Gerfers painted the cover of the WOC Directory this year and used the anchor, the iris, and the lily, which all symbolize hope. The anchor in Christianity primarily symbolizes hope, steadfastness, and security in Christ, particularly amidst the storms or trials of life. It is directly linked to Hebrews 6:19, which describes hope as “an anchor of the soul, sure and firm.”
