Gracious and loving God, help me to remember the birth of Jesus, that I may share in the Angels’ song, the Shepherds’ gladness, and the Wise Men’s worship. Close the door of hate, and open the door of love all over the world. Deliver me from evil through the pardon Jesus Christ brings. Teach me to love you wholeheartedly. Help me to remember the Good News of Christmas, that Jesus came to be my Savior and the Lord of my life. May Christmas morning make me glad to be your child and Christmas evening bring me to my bed with grateful thoughts, forgiven and willing to forgive, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON | Luke 2:1-7

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 1

THE SECOND LESSON | Luke 2:8-14

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” 8

The lights and bags with the Love Came Down book and the nativity set given tonight are in memory of the special life of Anna Elizabeth Scates, the daughter of our former Pastor the Rev. Dr. Ron Scates and his wife Anne. Anna is their second child of five, who passed away at a young age while Dr. Scates was serving at FPC as the Associate Pastor of Youth Ministry. This little red-head loved “Jee-ha” (Jesus), life, First Pres, and especially the children’s Christmas Eve service. ENJOY THESE LIGHTS AT HOME AS YOU REMEMBER TO LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE!

THE UNISON CHRISTMAS PRAYER The Christmas Benediction, a beloved tradition in the Christmas Eve worship services at First Presbyterian Church San Antonio for decades, is adapted from the poem “The Work of Christmas” by Howard Thurman, an American author, theologian, educator and civil rights leader. Howard was Dean of the chapels at Howard University and Boston University for more than two decades, wrote 20 books, and in 1944 helped found the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco, California. It was the first racially integrated, multicultural church in the United States. He served as spiritual advisor to the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
