A PERSONAL PRAYER OF PREPARATION

Gracious and loving God, help me to remember the birth of Jesus, that I may share in the Angels’ song, the Shepherds’ gladness, and the Wise Men’s worship. Close the door of hate, and open the door of love all over the world. Deliver me from evil through the pardon Jesus Christ brings. Teach me to love you wholeheartedly. Help me to remember the Good News of Christmas, that Jesus came to be my Savior and the Lord of my life. May Christmas morning make me glad to be your child and Christmas evening bring me to my bed with grateful thoughts, forgiven and willing to forgive, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

THE CHRISTMAS STORY | Matthew 1:18-25

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. There is a yearning in hearts weighed down by ancient grief and centuries of sorrow. There is a yearning in hearts that in the darkness hide and in the shades of death abide; A yearning for tomorrow. To pass the light down your row, hold the lit candle upright and tilt the unlit candle toward the flame to prevent wax from dripping. Please remain seated until your row is dismissed.

When directed by the pastors and ushers, please take all belongings with you and exit using both the center and side aisles.

Accessibility: If you need assistance, a ramp is available through the double doors at the front of the sanctuary. Exit onto the 4th Street sidewalk and continue across North Alamo Street.

Once you reach the narthex/foyer, please continue down the front steps of the sanctuary and outside across North Alamo Street. Do not stop in the narthex. After everyone has gathered outside, the choir will lead the final verse of “Silent Night,” followed by the pastor’s benediction from the sanctuary steps.

THE CHRISTMAS BENEDICTION The Christmas Benediction, a beloved tradition in the Christmas Eve worship services at First Presbyterian Church San Antonio for decades, is adapted from the poem “The Work of Christmas” by Howard Thurman, an American author, theologian, educator and civil rights leader. Howard was Dean of the chapels at Howard University and Boston University for more than two decades, wrote 20 books, and in 1944 helped found the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco, California. It was the first racially integrated, multicultural church in the United States. He served as spiritual advisor to the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. CHRISTMAS EVE OFFERING | Loving the City & the World
