CALL TO WORSHIP

Rev. Dr. Joe Moore

Leader: Today, we gather in remembrance.

People: We gather as people who recognize their need for a Savior.

Leader: We worship the king who humbled himself in obedience to death. People: We cry out to Jesus, who loved us even in our sin. Leader: We honor the one who took our place.

ALL: We raise our eyes to the God who allowed his son to die, so that we could always live. PRAYER OF ADORATION CONGREGATIONAL WORSHIP | Hymn #255 Beneath the Cross of Jesus LESSON ONE: JESUS IS MOCKED | Mark 15:16-20

Rev. Dr. Joe Moore

And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him. 16

Leader: Almighty God, we give thanks and praise and worship, with your Church in every place and throughout the ages, for the grace that has come to us once for all in our Lord Jesus Christ. It is with shame and sorrow, as we think of Him, that we confess our failures to be His true disciples; we have not followed Him in His concern for the poor, the despised and the lost ones; we shrink from being wholly committed to His way of meekness; we long for the prizes that this world can give, and are too easily turned aside from His way of faith and hope and love.
