Have you ever thought about how unique our “Christian” vocabulary is? Perhaps it is the contrast that has struck me recently. So much of what we see and hear in the news seems to focus on power and partisanship, on money and distrust, on anger and accusation. In contrast, we see Jesus serving, healing, washing feet, living and dying with a suffering love. We hear Paul saying that “faith, hope and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love” (1st Corinthians 13: 13) and that the “fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22). It is not that we live this way all the time. Of course, we fall short, but nevertheless it is our aspiration that we would exhibit these virtues, and we encourage each other to do so. What a joy and privilege and challenge to be engaged in this endeavor together. Looking back over March, what a month it has been! We have seen faith, hope and love at work in so many places: in our worship and music, including guest preacher George Wirth for our Spring Focus Weekend, wonderful concerts on Sunday afternoons and Wednesdays at noon, the commissioning of new Stephen Ministers, Lenten Fellowship Dinners, Meals of Hope, and Mission tour; in our women’s groups, both Presbyterian Women and the Women of the Way Bible study, the new Men’s Fellowship, as well as the speakers at Men’s Club and the Huddle Bible study, in our youth trips and the 144 fundraiser, in our preschool children and in our new members. The Spirit is alive and at work!

On the financial front, many thanks to all of you who have pledged to our “Generous Hearts” Campaign. We rejoice that we have made the 65th Anniversary Challenge Match. For those of you who have not yet pledged, please consider doing so as we have a ways to go to reach our goal of 325 pledges. But let me also say “thank you” to all who faithfully give, whether you pledge or not. Giving is also at the heart of our faith. Looking ahead, we continue in our sermon series “The Gifts of God” (see page 4). We will have special services during Holy Week, including Maundy Thursday at 7 p.m. with the Cumberland Church and Pastor Ramon Garcia and Loida Garcia, our best ever translator. The Good Friday service will be at noon, and Easter Sunday services at 7:30, 8:30 and 10:15 a.m. In April, our Nominating Committee will be working on putting together a proposed slate of persons to serve as the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee and on April 23 we will have our Annual Meeting with Annual Reports from our committees. And, of course, the Season is winding down and many of you are heading North. We are grateful for you and say to you, “may God be with you there.” And my prayer for all of us, wherever we may be, is that we will speak and live our vocabulary of faith, hope and most of all love -the love of God in Jesus Christ from which nothing can ever separate us. A Season of Music Lenten Organ Concerts
The Chamber Choir
Wednesdays April 5, 12, 2017 12:00 - 12:30 p.m.
Florida Gulf Coast University
The spectacular Ruffatti pipe organ is featured in Lenten organ recitals offered by our Director of Music, Dr. Brice Gerlach. In these informal concerts Brice takes the time to explain some of the mechanical workings of the organ and offers some musical insights about the pieces on the program. Each concert opens with a piece that highlights the magnificent horizontal trumpets protruding from the front of the organ case. A work by J. S. Bach is always featured and arrangements of Lenten hymn tunes are presented, allowing for some of the diverse solo stops and softer sounds of the organ to be heard. The concerts will end with a rousing toccata, allowing the audience to hear the full power of the organ. After the recital, the audience is invited to ask questions and view the beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship of the Ruffatti. Tours of the pipe chambers are also offered each week. Come hear beautiful organ music during Lent. Don't miss these special opportunities for personal reflection, meditation, and celebration of this holy season.

The Chamber Choir is an auditioned ensemble open to all students regardless of major at FGCU. In 2014 the choir toured internationally and sang as the featured ensemble at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. The ensemble has performed at the Florida Music Educators Association annual conference and at the Florida State Music Teachers Association conference and the Florida Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association conference. In May of 2017 they will perform in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, including a performance as a festival opening headliner for Kaunas Cantat international choral festival in Lithuania.
The concert program will contain a variety of repertoire that includes choral standards from the Western canon, selections by composers of the Baltic States, and music of American composers including folk songs and Spirituals. The ensemble will preview for you the music they will sing on their 2017 performance tour. Selections include motets by Mendelssohn, Bach's Jesu, meine Freude, music of Ēriks Ešenvalds and other Baltic composers, and Spirituals by William Dawson and Moses Hogan.

April showers bringing May flowers and Psalm 84:6 Many of our congregants live(d) in “the North” and thus have endured moving about under April’s cold, gray skies while being drenched by bone-chilling rains. We cheered ourselves with the images of May’s balmy, sunny days filled with the beauty of sweetly fragrant spring flowers. Such joy, such renewal came with May! Wasn’t a glorious May well worth enduring necessary April showers? Well, Psalm 84:6 promises as we endure life’s hardships that we can confidently look forward to even more glorious days. “When they walk through the Valley of Weeping, it will become a place of refreshing springs, where pools of blessing collect after the rains!” Psalm 84:6 (NLT)

Life will hand us some of “the rains of the Valley of Weeping” such as the death of loved ones, divorce, critical illness—myriads of possible sorrows. God doesn’t promise us a trouble-free life, but He does say that Valleys of Weeping will eventually become pools of blessing. We know we should choose our attitudes. We know hard times increase our gratitude for the good times, teach empathy and compassion, can strengthen ties with family and friends, and can even lead us closer to God. We know we should trust Him during the difficult seasons instead of burying ourselves in bitter self-pity. But it is possible for life’s rains to become torrential floods threatening to carry us away. If you are currently being swept away by life’s troubles, maybe you would find one of life’s blessings by having a Stephen Minister confidential caregiver to help you weather the storm, to help you as you “find your pools of blessings”. Our FPCN work teams recently contributed our accumulated work hours to a mom and her daughter, completing their sweat equity requirement! Tara and Hailie are all settled in their new home. Along with our very best wishes for this sweet family, the Missions Committee gathered and delivered a few baskets of household supplies to get them started.
Comments like these were expressed as we were cleaning up from the recent Meals of Hope food packing event. Saturday morning, March 4, one hundred dedicated volunteers packed 45,312 nutritionally balanced meals to be distributed through local food banks. Indeed, many hands accomplished a worthwhile project in a small amount of time. Additionally, we had a lot of fun doing it. The Mission Committee thanks all who contributed to the 2016 Christmas Eve offering. Those generous financial contributions allowed our church to sponsor a Meals of Hope food packing event. The church staff cheerfully took on extra tasks in preparation for the event.
On Tuesday, March 28 a group of volunteers met at St. Matthew’s House to cook dinner. They diced, sliced, prepped, cooked, and cleaned up.

Feed the 5,000 This month we gather food for Helps Outreach, a local volunteer Christian organization.
Grace Place Help us change lives! Grace Place for Children and Families always welcomes volunteers. Opportunities abound in all programs for those who would like to volunteer once or twice a week, on a monthly basis, several times per year, or even on an occasional basis for special events. All of the education programs, Friday Food Pantry, general office duties, and driving a small or large school bus are just some of the opportunities available for you to put your God given talents to work for others.
Bright Beginnings Program: Volunteers are needed to work with one, two and three year old students in the mornings. Academy of Leaders K-12 After School Program: Tutor any of the K-12 grade levels in any subject. Tutors willing to work one-on-one or in small groups with after school students are in high demand. Love the outdoors and gardening? Put your talents to work with the elementary after school students in the gardens. Evening Adult Education: Volunteers are especially needed as ELL teachers. Friday Food Pantry: This offers volunteers opportunities to help serve the Grace Place families by organizing food deliveries, packing bags of groceries and assisting with food selections. The Grace Place Family Literacy Day Saturday, April 8.
The theme this year is Wellness and Healthy Living and once again we will be participating as part of our mission outreach program. A sign up sheet is located on the Mission Table in Spencer Hall for those wishing to volunteer for this rewarding opportunity. We will be helping the children select books and reading to small groups. The bus will be leaving the church at 8:45 a.m. and returning by 12:30 p.m. Its easy to volunteer your time and talents at Grace Place for Children and Families. Their only requirement is you have a passion to help those who are helping themselves, no educational experience or bilingual knowledge necessary.
Suggested items are: Jam or jelly Peanut butter Canned chicken, spam or tuna Pasta Pasta sauce Rice Red or black dried beans Hamburger Helper Macaroni & cheese Cans of vegetables Cans of soup Ushers will have bags with the food list available as we leave the Sanctuary on April 2. Please return them to the Sixth Street church entrance before service on Sunday, April 9. If you prefer, checks may be made payable to "First Presbyterian Church" with the memo marked "Feed the 5,000" and placed in the collection plate. Please no open containers or out of date food. Please note: when you head north for the summer, you can bring in your non-
perishable, unopened food
and we’ll donate it to the next Feed the 5,000 recipient.

I often wonder, and believe I’ve spoken (and written!) about whether my Chapel lessons resonate with our students. Each week, all of our students attend Chapel that is either conducted by Shana or me. I tend to use a lot of object-based lessons as I feel that having a tangible object to show the children will make the lesson more interesting, and hopefully, more meaningful!
Earlier this week, I was talking with a fellow staff member and she was sharing with me that she traveled during our Spring Break to visit a family that previously attended the Preschool. The staff member stated that during her visit, she was engaged in a conversation with the children of the family about money. One of the children recalled a memory of cleaning a penny in Chapel. During Easter, our Chapel lessons focus on Jesus’ sacrifice. We discuss that because Jesus died, we are able to pray and ask forgiveness. A dirty penny was used in a demonstration, during the student’s attendance at the Preschool, to represent the “mistakes” or sins of God’s people. We then cleaned the penny with a “prayer” solution. The student was able to retell the story and the meaning of that particular lesson that occurred three or four years ago. She accurately remembered the meaning of the penny and the story! Leading up to Easter this year, we have discussed the legend of the pretzel (a monk made a special bread during Lent many years ago and formed it in the shape of children crossing their arms across their chest to pray-I encourage you to look it up if you’ve never heard it before!), as well as engaged in a variety of felt board stories. Instead of the penny demonstration, this year, we’ve used a very special ball to represent our hearts. During the lesson, again, we discuss the sacrifice that Jesus made by dying on the cross for God’s people. To represent our sins, the ball has been wrapped in aluminum foil. But once we pray and ask for forgiveness the tin foil falls from our “heart” and our heart is made pure and bright again.

As an added bonus, the ball has a light inside. The light can be connected to a previous lesson during which we discussed letting the light of our hearts and our love for God shine out into the world. Unraveling the ball for the children during the lesson was quite magical. The students were very interested in seeing what was underneath the tin foil and soft gasps could be heard as the “heart” was revealed! Moments like those reassure me that a connection is being made and that the students are learning to love God and the world through our teachings. There is no doubt that we are making a difference in the lives of each student that we care for at First Presbyterian Preschool!

This year’s Vacation Bible School, Maker Fun Factory will take place July 10-14. It’s a very fun and busy time for the Christian Education Ministry. We are looking for 14 crew leaders for Preschool and Elementary groups. We will need 9 station leaders for VBS. All material is included and all you’ll need is a CAN DO attitude! Men’s Morning Fellowship
Mayor Bill Barnett Bill Barnett started his political career in 1984 by being elected to Naples City Council where he served until 1992 when he was termed out. He returned to politics in 1996 as Mayor, and served until 2000 being termed out once again. He sat out four years and was elected Mayor again in 2004. His term ended in February, 2008, but because of an overwhelming voter referendum in 2006 allowing a Mayor to be able to serve the same term(s) as Council Members, he ran for one more term as Mayor, and was elected by 85.5% of the vote. In 2012 he received the top number of votes for a seat on Naples City Council for the 2012-2016 term. Mayor Bill is married to Chris, has 5 children, Jeff, Lisa, Kim, Sheryl and the late Stephanie, eight grandchildren, six who live in Naples, and two who live in Scottsdale, Arizona. During our 65th Anniversary Celebration, Mayor Barnett presented us with a key to the city, a first for a faith community, and proclaimed February 12, 2017 as First Presbyterian Church of Naples Day!

everal of our church members joined our Sew and Sews for a presentation on Thursday, March 16, to hear Dr. Susan Wilson and Sarah Jane Allen, passionate supporters of the Tumaini Fund, tell us about their efforts in helping the orphans in Kagera, East Africa. For years our Sew and Sews have been sending dresses to this organization for these orphans left as a result of Aids in that country. We were inspired all over again to continue our sewing for these children who otherwise would have only one piece of clothing – which they wear until there’s nothing left. Inspired by Sarah Jane Allen and her efforts in supplying the girls with personal hygiene kits, several have expressed interest in
Stitches of Love These 10 blankets were made by the Sew and Sews group in the past few weeks. These will go to Guatemala (through Miracles in Action) to the children who don't even have a blanket to keep them warm. And they were made from fabric that was just sitting in the closet upstairs at the church and waiting for it to be used!
making this a project here at First Presbyterian Church. So, stay tuned – it’s something that everyone can be involved in. We welcome one and all to Sew and Sews which meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month – 11 a.m. – until 2 p.m. (or whenever one needs to leave). Bring lunch and enjoy a bit of fellowship with some great folks. You don’t have to sew to be a part of this group; however, we do have sewing machines available for use.

Dear Rev. Goodrich and members of First Presbyterian Church, Thank you so much for being a willing host to the Boy Scouts of Troop 2001 and to my family for the concert. We were thrilled that we raised over $8,000 and we are so fortunate that we live in such a generous community. The scouts and I want to thank you for all the support and generosity. Flower Fund Following the services the Chancel flowers are separated into small arrangements and delivered to those having been hospitalized or celebrating a momentous birthday. You can make a donation of any amount to the flower fund to ensure that there are always two arrangements on the Chancel each Sunday. Would you like to make a dedication to someone special? Dedications are $65 and several Sundays are available for you to choose from. You may sign up in Spencer Hall or call Loida Garcia.
KITCHEN COURTESY If your group uses the church linens, it is your responsibility to clean, fold and return them to the appropriate labeled containers in the pantry. If any linen is stained, please take it home and wash it! Please return the linen PROMPTLY so it is ready for others to use.
