Rev. Craig Goodrich, Senior Pastor/Head of Staff A few weeks ago as I greeted folks after worship, one of you asked me with great earnestness, “Do you find it hard to be a Christian?” And right there in the line we had a brief theological discussion and agreed that “yes,” sometimes it is hard.
I am reminded of the Apostle Paul’s words to the churches of Galatia: “So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially of the family of faith.” (Galatians 6:9). Sometimes we do grow weary and discouraged. It is hard to keep looking for the good. It is hard to be faithful, hopeful and loving. And it is so easy to give into the negative, especially fear and anxiety. A prayer in my bedroom growing up included these words “Help me to stand for the hard right against the easy wrong.”
But the good news is that we draw encouragement from each other and from engaging in the regular disciplines of worship, prayer and service. And when we do God, through the Holy Spirit, does give us strength and hope and energy to persevere, and to become our best and true selves in this family of faith. So, be of good courage! As we head into October, I am grateful for the gifts of grace and community, for ministries of mission, compassion and care. A new Women’s Bible Study has started. We welcomed to our pulpit Rev. Bill Crawford, a member of our congregation and the youth had a great trip to Disney for the annual “Night of Joy.” I am grateful for the having the privilege of offering the invocation at the City Council meeting on September 7 and for our elders who made the wise decision not to exercise an option to purchase the Black Property (see details in report of Finance Chair, Richard Green on page 4). I am grateful for the lives of saints who have joined the heavenly communion: Don Bunker, Cary Church, and Alice Graham. I am grateful for the new

saints among us, our nine new members and for the gifts they bring. (See photos at page 15). As we look ahead, I am hopeful. I look forward to celebrating World Communion Sunday on October 2; to Presbyterian Women activities (come to the luncheon on October 19 and consider joining a Circle) and the Men’s Huddle, to new Wednesday night programming (see page 12), to another great Fall festival on October 26, to the extraordinary Season of Music, and to the “Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan.” I am grateful for the privilege of praying and preaching and look forward to our weekly worship in October which includes Rev. Winston Lawson as our guest preacher on October 23. (Page 14). Finally I encourage us all to pray for our city, county, state and federal governments, that our public servants will make wise, just and courageous decisions. There are so many issues: the Zika virus, all the elections, racial divides, guns, water, immigration and more. May all who serve the public trust and not grow weary in doing what is right and work for the good of all. And where God is calling for our involvement, let us do our part! Is it hard to be a Christian? Yes, sometimes. But thanks be to God and our Lord Jesus Christ that we are not alone, that it is not all up to us. And thanks be to God who in our weakness supplies the strength that we need. In this is great joy! Faithfully and Gratefully,

In these informal concerts Brice takes the time to explain some of the mechanical workings of the organ and offers some musical insights about the pieces in the program. After the recital, the audience is invited to the console, to ask questions, and to see the beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship of the Ruffatti. Tours of the pipe chambers are also offered each week.

Mary Joy Silmaro, organ Sunday, October 30 4 p.m. Mary Joy Silmaro is a student at Ave Maria University where she is in her senior year of organ studies with Dr. Brice Gerlach. Mary Joy began her music training at age 5 with piano lessons from her homeschooling mother. She embarked on formal piano studies at age 7, violin at age 8, and voice at age 9. This past summer, she was the music intern at First Presbyterian Church of Naples. She currently holds the position of music director and organist at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Lehigh Acres, FL. Having a deep interest and love for organ performance, Mary Joy has entered several organ competitions: she won second place in the 2015 Rodgers Classical Organ Competition, and was commended by the judges of the preliminary round of the 2016 Miami International Organ Competition as one of thirty-nine considered fine applicants for her “fantastic playing and high level of artistry.”
Inspired by her music teachers, especially by Dr. Gerlach, for a commitment to excellence as a musician, she aspires to further her studies in organ performance, Sacred Music, and conducting in her future graduate studies. The concert will feature works by Bach, Franck and Liszt as well as some Halloween themed organ duets with Brice Gerlach. You won’t want to miss this fantastic young artist in concert!

So far this year, in order to meet expenses, we have had to transfer funds from our endowment fund and we anticipate that we will have to withdraw additional funds over the remainder of the year. (See the figures below).
We need to increase our giving if at all possible to keep our losses as low as possible. We are fortunate that our pledges are up over last year but it is our total giving that we live by. We have seen the continued growth of the church in membership and in our attendance, up an average of 14% every week over last year with Rev. Craig Goodrich as our Pastor. ENDOWMENT COMMITTEE Thinking About Legacies There are so many legacies from which we draw. Parents oftentimes leave us with a powerful set of values and a strong legacy of service and acceptance of others. Even our faith creates in us a legacy of strong biblical knowledge and curiosity and humility. Our congregation has invested in us legacies of affirmation and opportunity, of unconditional love and friendships that stand the test of time, of nurtured faith and tested values and growing stewardship.

Hopefully these will include the hope of a strong faith, the enduring power of nonjudgmental love, and perhaps even the desire to make of our lives a difference in the world. As part of this, consider how including First Presbyterian Church of Naples in your end-of-life giving plans will provide a legacy to future generations seeking to grow in faith and wisdom. Each weekly church bulletin invites you to stop by the Stephen Ministry table, but why would you? So many Bible verses guide us to “carry one another’s burdens”, to “encourage one another”.
Stephen Ministers have been trained to help carry your burdens. Each Sunday a Stephen Minister is available to hear about an ongoing concern in your life or that of a loved one and then to pray with you. The Stephen Minister could give you more information about how the ongoing caring ministry could be helpful. Additionally, there are many pamphlets offering suggestions about dealing with health concerns, caregiving challenges, problems affecting your emotional wellbeing, and faith questions.

The Missions Committee has finalized dates for mission events through this fall and next spring. We hope that you will make an effort to be a part of at least one. A copy is available on the Mission Table in Spencer Hall. Missions is a very important part of our work as a church. Although many volunteer in the community on an individual basis, what we participate in as a church is a significant Christian outreach that we want to be involved in. Need is around every corner and it isn’t met unless

Sew & Sews
Warm conversation, companionship, support is what makes Presbyterian Women wonderful. Come join us. Be part of a Circle. There are four Circles, Faith/Joy; Peace with Honor; Love and Friendship; and Sunshine. They meet during the third week of each month. This year’s Bible study is Who is Jesus? What a Difference a Lens Makes by Judy Yates Siker. Study guides may be purchased ($8) in Spencer Hall following the services.
Regretfully earlier this year, we lost two of the very dedicated founders of this group – Marcella Coe and Mary Burns.
Not only are you welcome to the Gathering (where a wonderful lunch is served) or a Circle, you are welcome to join Sew and Sews or the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Sew and Sews is a small group that meets twice a month, beginning in November. They work on special sewing projects for the needy. Knitting may be your objective; Prayer Shawl Ministry is for you. This group meets weekly. If you don’t know how to knit and want to learn someone will teach you.
Sew and Sews, under the leadership of our Presbyterian Women, was created in the 1970s. During all these years they’ve made hospital gowns from men’s shirts, bibs for nursing homes, afghans for veterans, pajamas for children in Thailand, and many contributions for Miracles in Action. Today our group still makes dresses and aprons for AIDS orphans in Africa, ladies knit caps, and we collect stamps.
We get together the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. until around 2 p.m. – sharing lunch and fellowship at the noon hour. We have several sewing machines that are available for any who will come.
Speaking of sewing machines . . . sincere thanks are due to Marlene McLaren for having all of our sewing machines serviced by Joe Fulmer, Director of Tops Vacuum & Sewing located in the Bed Bath and Beyond shopping center. This service was done without charge, and we are very grateful to Joe for his generosity, and to Marlene for all the effort she put forth in getting this task accomplished. If you like to sew – even if it’s been years since you’ve done so - we would love to have you become a part of our group. We will begin getting together again on Thursday, November 10 at 10 a.m. If you have questions, or would like to add your name to our list, please call Saralene Oldham at 239.643.4703. Thanks to Sandy Johnson, we now have very attractive cloth “reserved” markers for our pews to be used in lieu of the yellow plastic cards that we have used for a long time. The new markers are very attractive, and we sincerely thank Sandy for putting her great talents to use on our behalf.

New year, New beginnings This year when the Preschool opened for another school year, it began with a fresh new look. The walls within the Preschool received a new coat of paint. The colors now found in the Preschool are more calming and soothing instead of the bright, shocking primary colors. In addition to the paint, we’ve installed a new sign outside the playground to help identify the Preschool to those driving by. New door mats with the Preschool’s custom logo are now present at each of our main entrance doors. Not only can you find changes outside the classroom, but you can also see slight changes in the classroom as well. This year we are working to improve our curriculum to include many more handson experiences. The children are involved in sensory activities that include sand, water, and other materials. This play provides children the opportunity to build math skills along with social skills. Our students are also participating in science activities and experiments, including cooking experiences. Our four year old students have weekly special units in Math and Science.
We open this year with 17 staff members that are so amazing that I often find myself admiring their work, their patience, their knowledge, and their willingness to go above and beyond what is required. I use the word “dedication” quite regularly when discussing my staff, but that’s the best way that I can find to truly explain what our staff do for our families and students. The Preschool is so fortunate to have each and every one of the staff members, which together make the best team that I’ve been a part of.
A special thank you to Sandy, Tina and Kathleen who worked tirelessly to make sure the school was ready for the first day of school!
