Developments of
Mision Peniel in Immokalee Over the summer, Beth-El Farmworker Ministry decided to close Mision Peniel in Immokalee due to budget shortfalls. But recognizing the importance of this ministry, the Presbytery swiftly acted to make this a viable mission of Peace River Presbytery. More than fifty people from sixteen congregations gathered in late summer at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Fort Myers to explore options for a continuing ministry and pastoral presence in Immokalee. At this gathering people were asked to write down their estimate of the support they believe they or their church might give to sustain this ministry for the rest of 2013. Thanks be to God more than $62,000 is the anticipated amount. That meeting was followed by the first meeting of a 12-member task force of the Missional Team to help transition this ministry. At the August Presbytery meeting, the Presbytery voted to establish the position of Presbytery Evangelist to serve on the mission field in Immokalee. Effective October 1, 2013, Peace River Presbytery will employ the Rev. Miguel Estrada as Presbytery Evangelist.
Meanwhile, as the task force is now in place, I am currently chairing the committee. We are focused on keeping Mision Peniel’s current ministries in place, including 1. Evangelism 2. Discipleship 3. Pastoral Care 4. Partnership/ accompaniment with Coalition of Immokalee Workers 5. Radio Ministry 6. Meal distribution 7. Worship and Bible study 8. Clothing, shoes and, toiletries distribution 9. Food distribution
This ministry and the way churches and individuals are responding makes me proud to be part of the Presbyterian Church. I’m excited about this ministry and the impact that Mision Peniel will have as it bridges farmworkers to churches and the world. Please pray for Mision Peniel, Rev. One of the responsibilities of the task force is to help secure funding from churches, individuals, and grants. Another responsibility is to think strategically about the shape of the ministry in the years to come. Our Session feels strongly about this mission and has committed $8,000 this year to Mision Peniel.

A Season of Music A Trio of Friends James Cochran, Michele Byrd & Brice Gerlach Sunday, October 27 at 4 p.m.
Our Director of Music, Brice Gerlach and his wife, Michele Byrd, combine talents with James Cochran for an exciting afternoon of keyboard and vocal music. You won’t want to miss this event! In addition to the magnificent Ruffatti pipe organ, Brice and Jim will be playing a Rodgers digital organ as well as the Blüthner grand piano. Three keyboards, three friends in concert. The program will include baroque gems, opera classics, jazz standards and some spooky Halloween music! The Phantom of the Opera may make an appearance as well as Brice and Michele’s son, Colin, a boy soprano soloist. Plan on attending this concert. It promises to have beautiful music performed by the best of friends.

Church On Wednesday October 2 begins a new four-week session of Church On Wednesday classes. One class will be offered each week from 6—7 p.m. in Spencer Hall. Dinner will be held from 5:30—6 p.m. and reservations are appreciated for food preparation. The cost for dinner is $8-Adults, $3-students grades 6-12, free for grade 5 and younger. This year Mike Rutoski will be preparing the meals in our kitchen. Please see the menu below. CHAOS students will also be joining the adults for dinner.

Investment Often you hear that investing in children, whether monetarily or personally, is an investment in our future. The children of today will be our State Representatives, senators, mayors, teachers or business leaders of tomorrow. The best gifts we can give our children to ensure they reach their highest potential are love, support and encouragement.

If all of these traits are taught successfully, they will follow the child into adulthood. Teaching any concept, whether academic or character related, involves the need to listen. We never grow out of the need to listen. Even as adults we must listen to our boss at work, our Pastor at Church, our own children. We listen for the word of the Lord and use these words to guide us in our Christian lives. Often, listening may not even involve verbalization, but may simply mean taking notice of body language or just simply a need for human contact. As early educators, we listen often. We listen to parents, to one another and to our students. We have two ears
and only one mouth and, therefore, should hear twice as much as we speak. We view

In order to do this, the staff may ask questions of the children to provide a basis for higher order thinking so that the children can come up with a solution themselves. Youth Bridge Lessons Bridge is a fun and fascinating card game that will improve your child’s skills in math, logic, and ethics. It’s a game that can be played for a lifetime. The class will be taught by church member, Keith Kersch, a Life Master bridge player and certified teacher and director. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, beginning October 1 at 4:15 p.m. Contact Andi Plueddeman for more information, 239.262.1311 ext. 229. The Christian Education Department is looking for a few volunteers on Wednesdays and Sundays to help with teaching the Elementary students and to help in the kitchen. Christmas in October? CHAOS is thinking about Christmas during the month of October! We are accepting donations of books, pajamas, and toys for all ages and sizes for children in Collier County who may not have a Christmas this year. Everything collected will be given to Friends of Foster Children and be distributed to kids that are in or recently out of Foster Care. All donations can be dropped off in Spencer Hall, the church reception desk or in the Christian Education office on the second floor. Ladies, it is ready, set and go to the Presbyterian Women’s Joint Circle Gathering on October 16 at Noon in Spencer Hall. Rev. Jonathan Evans will start our season’s Bible Study, Jesus be the Center, by Rev. Eunice McGarrahan based on The French Confession (1559) by John Calvin from The Fellowship of Presbyterians. Please note this is a correction of the prior title information as listed in the September Outreach. Study Guides will be available in Spencer Hall on Sunday, October 13 for $8 each and at the meeting on October 16. Reservations for the luncheon will be taken on Sunday, October 6 and 13 in Spencer Hall for $7. The menu is soup, salad and sweets. The Coordinating Team will be hosting and furnishing the sweets to accompany the vegetable soup and tossed salad. The Naples Botanical Garden is a treasure for us to explore and enjoy. Kara Laufer, Director of Business Development, and Sally Richardson, Volunteer Manager, will speak on the past, present and future plans for the garden. As always, we will have a delicious lunch of tuna salad on croissant, chips and baked apple with ice cream. Reservations may be made at the Presbyterian Women's table after the service October 27 and November 3.

Feed the 5,000 Luke 9:10-17 This month we are using our food drive to assist Helps Outreach. If you are able to help this worthy program, pick up a Publix bag from an usher as you leave the Sanctuary on the first Sunday of the month. The bag has a list of desired food items. Bring your food contribution to the Sixth Street church entrance before the service on the second Sunday of the month. If you prefer, checks may be made payable to "First Presbyterian Church" and the memo marked "Feed the 5,000." Suggested items are: jam or jelly canned chicken and/or ham pasta pasta sauce macaroni and cheese hamburger helper rice red or black dried beans canned peas, corn, and/or green beans canned soup canned evaporated milk
The Mission Committee is planning a tour of the agencies we support in Immokalee. See what the preschoolers are doing. Hear about projects with the farm workers. Lunch? Of course (we’ll pass the hat to pay). And also a stop at the farmers’ market. Join us on Thursday, November 7. This month we are featuring First Presbyterian Church Stephen Ministers, JoAnn Beggs and Keith Kersch, in an effort to “Meet the Stephen Minister.” This pictorial preview represents an opportunity to introduce these Christian lay leaders who are helping make a difference in our Church and in the lives of those hurting individuals they serve.
Keith Kersch Keith ‘s middle years were consumed by family and work commitments. He came back to the church when he realized that God had many things to offer him and he had much that he could give back. He was called to be a Stephen Minister during the winter of 2012 because of a desire to return some of God’s blessings to those who are in need.
Visitation Care Ministry There will be a meeting of people who are already involved in this ministry and people who would like to learn about First Presbyterian Visitation Care Ministry. FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH TO HOST PEACE RIVER PRESBTERY MEETING November 21, 2013, Thursday, at 9 a.m. thirty-eight churches of the Peace River Presbytery will meet for the day as our guests. We will need approximately 40 volunteers to help with: welcoming and showing visitors where the various areas are setting up and serving coffee and refreshments selling luncheon tickets and collecting them at lunch luncheon service and preparation registration the day of the meeting The times for volunteers would be during the hours of 6:45 a.m. and 4 p.m. with shifts varying from three or four hours to longer as one is willing to work. Our guests begin arriving at 7 a.m. and others come for lunch and the afternoon session. There are also some items to be done before the day of the meeting such as ironing the tablecloths etc. that can be done on the volunteer’s schedule.
