Grace to you and peace. And may you know the joy Always in that order. You see God’s grace in Jesus Christ always of thanksgiving this and every day! comes first. We often say that Gratefully and Faithfully, grace is God’s “one way love” in Jesus Christ to us and to the world. And our response to receiving this abundant grace is gratitude. For grace is a pure gift. And for the grace we experience in this congregation, the body of Christ known as the First Presbyterian Church of Naples, I give thanks to God! It is hard to believe that it is November already, the month that contains Thanksgiving Day, the great American tradition. I love Thanksgiving Day. And yet the Apostle Paul calls us to be thankful every day! In Colossians he writes this, “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:15). Looking back over the month of October I am thankful for a wonderful church staff which pulls together as a team and for new additions to our staff. I am thankful for faithful deacons and elders who serve so tirelessly and with joy. I am thankful for friends returning home to Naples. I am thankful for an amazing Fall Festival which hundreds attended, for another inspiring Reformation Sunday with the “Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan,” for Presbyterian Women and the Women of the Way, for the Men’s Fellowship and the Huddle, for great Wednesday night fellowship dinners and programs. I am thankful for our many Mission initiatives, for new members, new deacons and elders, for our caring Stephen Ministers, for our beginning a new “Strategic Direction” process led by Gary Root (see page 5) and for so much more! And looking towards November, these thoughts. Remember to turn your clocks back on Saturday November 3. We will celebrate All Saint’s Sunday on November 4, remembering the saints of our congregation who have died in the last year. The Season of Music concerts begin that afternoon. There will be a wonderful Congregational Dinner on Wednesday November 14, a Blood Drive on November 19, and don’t forget our traditional Thanksgiving Day worship service at 11:30 a.m. Thursday November 22, followed by a feast in Spencer Hall! Finally, on November 28 we will gather to decorate the Sanctuary for Advent and Christmas. This is not all of course, so do read this issue of Outreach cover to cover. Many thanks to Kathleen

Organist David Heller has risen to prominence as an outstanding performer and pedagogue in the United States. The American Organist magazine has described him as “an eloquent performer,” and his playing as “an excellent demonstration of outstanding music making.” A native of Wisconsin, Dr. Heller holds degrees from Lawrence University and the Eastman School of Music, which awarded him the prestigious Performer’s Certificate in Organ. As an active recitalist, David Heller has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe, South Korea, and Taiwan. Dr. Heller serves as a lecturer and performer for the Classical Music Festival-Eisenstadt Summer Academy each summer in Eisenstadt, Austria. Since 1986, David Heller has been a member of the faculty at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas serving as Professor of Music and University Organist. He was appointed Chair of the Department of Music in 2012. This concert will feature the music of John Cook, J.S. Bach, Gerre Hancock, Craig Phillips, Brian
The Naples Philharmonic and Chorus join to present one of music’s most beloved choral works in this rousing holiday classic. Experience the power of the 100voice Naples Philharmonic Chorus as they present Handel’s masterful oratorio. A commentary on the life of Jesus Christ, Messiah remains Handel's best-known work, with performances particularly popular during the Advent season. The Chancel Choir of First Presbyterian Church will present a concert that celebrates the joy of Christmas through the art of song. The annual concert showcases the incredible talent of First Presbyterian Church. The program will feature a professional chamber orchestra, the soloists from the choir and the First Presbyterian Church choir singing Christmas favorites. There are many Christmas concerts in December in Naples, but this one is unique because of the mighty Ruffatti organ. When the audience is joining with the choir in a sing-a-long of wellknown carols, all are supported by the King of Instruments, the organ. This year, we will add the chamber orchestra to the mix. This is a concert you will be sure to remember! Come enjoy a beautiful concert with some of the most traditional and well-loved Christmas songs ever composed.

THOUGHTS FROM YOUR STEPHEN MINISTERS “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God” – 2 Corinthians 1: 3-4. Psalm 118 reminds us, “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it”. As we rejoice in this day that the Lord has given us, let us remember that an important part of today’s celebration is the time we spend comforting those in need. Each day provides countless opportunities to encourage others and to assist those who need our help. When we do, we spread seeds of hope and happiness.
The Stephen Ministers look forward to a guest speaker from the Alzheimer’s Association Network on Thursday, November 1 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the Mase Education Center. Writing to the Church in Corinth the apostle Paul encouraged generous giving, “The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:7-8). Have you been blessed with abundance? Have you already fulfilled your pledge? Are you thinking of making your first gift to the ministry of Jesus Christ in this place? If so, won’t you consider making a bountiful and cheerful gift by year-end? Thank you!
God’s Will for FPC Naples Going Forward We are pleased and excited to let you know that the Session has approved the formation of a team of church members and staff who will be meeting regularly between now and next May with the objective of discerning and developing a proposed “Strategic Direction” for FPC Naples.
Two key points: We intend a fully transparent process as we proceed, emphasizing good communication of our progress in a way that not only builds awareness of what’s going on, but also enables and encourages feedback from FPC Naples membership.
An initial meeting was held on October 25 to kick off the initiative, to begin to fill out the team, to discuss the process for getting the work done, and to pray.
If you (or any member you know) have a passion about the future direction of our beloved church and wish to participate in this process, please contact Gary Root, adsroot@aol.com or 239-9639838. We are especially interested in hearing the voices of younger as well as newer members.
The envisioned product is a short document proposing a Mission Statement, a Vision Statement, and 5-9 key long term objectives for our church family to consider pursuing. Importantly, throughout the envisioned process, we will be asking ourselves, through prayer and reflection, this question: “What is God’s Will for FPC Naples going forward?” Our goal is to complete this initiative with full membership endorsement in time for planning for the year 2020 and beyond. Planning and execution will determine the success of this effort.

In all, The Salvation Army is able to help nearly 25 million people each year, and a big part of that assistance is from the Christmas red kettle collection. Christmas Angel Tree Our angel tree is taking on a new glow this season! This Christmas, you can be an angel for a child of one of the many farmworker families being served by Mision Peniel in Immokalee.

Come join our team of ringers during the week of December 3 at the Neapolitan Way Publix. You will raise funds for the Salvation Army while offering Christmas cheer to shoppers. It is a fun, easy, heart -warming way to help provide the means to serve warm meals and gifts to more than three million people during the holidays. Shifts are only 2 hours! Sign up in Spencer Hall November 11, 18, 25 or December 2. Donations made to the Salvation Army red collection kettles also provide vital help throughout the year. The Salvation Army provides more than 10 million nights of shelter and 56 million meals
This month we are supporting the Shelter for Abused Women and Children. The Shelter protects victims, and heals and transforms lives. Grace Place Literacy Day Many thanks to all who contributed books for our FPCN team to distribute to the children at Grace Place. We helped the children select books to keep as their very own, and their smiles of delight were such a joy to see. Your generosity led to several overflowing bins of books which will be treasured and enjoyed by the families Grace Place serves.

Mision Peniel FPCN provided a crew of eager volunteers to sort clothing, prepare bags of groceries and serve a hot meal to the farmworkers of Immokalee at our very own Peace River Presbytery-supported Mision Peniel. This mission is expanding and growing, adding programs which include a community garden, bible study opportunities, women’s groups, conversational English and after -school tutoring. Watch the bulletin for the next opportunity to be a part of this inspiring place. Weekend Power Packs Stay a few minutes after church on Sunday, November 25 to help assemble bags of food for elementary school kids who otherwise don’t have enough to eat over the weekends. Many hands make light work, and your assistance with this project is very much appreciated!

Habitat for Humanity Our first work day this season was spent working on a home in Golden Gate. If you missed the fun of pounding nails, lining up siding, and other construction projects, sign up in Spencer Hall for our next build date, Tuesday, November 13. You don’t have to be a skilled carpenter or craftsperson! There are jobs for everyone, and our volunteer hours are contributed towards a future homeowner’s requirement, helping them advance towards their dream of affordable home ownership. Last month, Craig and Andie Goodrich, Bill Crawford, Jim Kier, and Pat Nordbrock traveled to Cuba as part of a 27-member delegation from Peace River Presbytery. We were warmly greeted by pastors from the Matanzas Presbytery and spent a very instructive 5 days learning about their churches, their presbytery, the ecumenical seminary and their efforts in mission and outreach. The hope is that our southwest Florida churches will form partnership relationships with congregations in Cuba. The partnership we are working towards is with the Central Presbyterian Church of Matanzas. We were able to enjoy developing friendships with their two pastors, husband and wife, Ary Fernandez and Beidy Casas, who serve this growing, vibrant, steadfast congregation. Ary and Beidy gave us a window into their service to the elderly, monthly outreach to outlying communities in the form of Christian Education for children in homes, the growth of programs for children in theater, music and drama, and the dreams they have for expanding church and presbytery programs. We have the blessing of the Missions Committee to continue to pursue a partnership with our Cuban brothers and sisters in Christ.

We welcome to our staff, Kristen Lucas, Office Assistant/Receptionist. Kristen was born and raised in Naples, FL, and began working in the business office at a local skilled nursing facility while working on a Business Administration degree. After falling in love with the residents and wanting to care for them, she completed nursing school, and worked as a licensed practical nurse for 10 years. Kristen has recently felt the need to help others in a different capacity, and pursued a new career with First Presbyterian Church. In her spare time, Kristen enjoys spending time with her family, which includes her partner, Michael, their son, Eli, two dogs and two cats, gardening, reading, and being outside in nature. Sew and Sews Stamp Ministry We will reconvene on Thursday, November 11, at 10 a.m. While several of our members are still away, we invite anyone who is interested in helping others to join us. If you can use a sewing machine or sew by hand there are plenty of opportunities to help us. We also need those who can tie-off blankets, use an iron, cut fabric using patterns, and the list goes on. We’d like to say a very special “Thank You” to Walter Gadkowski, w ho very generously donated some of his father’s stamp collection for this Come join us and see if you can’t cause. We are excited to send find a niche for yourself. We this package of “special stamps” meet upstairs in the Mase to the Stamp Alliance Group this Christian Education Building in Room 205. Bring a sandwich so month. we can share lunch and fellowship around noon. We usually break up between 1 and 2 p.m.

art of the mission of our group is collecting stamps for the Stamp Alliance Group who assembles the stamps to sell, and profits are used to purchase educational materials in Spanish for Spanish speaking countries and the U.S.
Most recently we have continued with dress making for AIDS victims in Africa, blankets and hats for children and adults in Guatemala, and hygiene kits for young girls in Africa and Immokalee.
