Presbyterian Women reconvened with their inaugural luncheon as the circles begin a study of the book of Hebrews. The Women of the Way have gathered for fellowship and study of the Beatitudes of Jesus. The Wednesday Morning Men’s Fellowship has continued to meet with stimulating talks given by our own members. Our Deacons, Stephen Ministers and Visitation Team continue to connect with our members and offer compassionate caring to those in need. In addition, our Associate Pastor Nominating Committee, chaired by Barb Weiss with Bill Kearney as vice chair has been hard at work doing necessary preparations to begin our search for an Associate Pastor. Mission efforts included work days at Habitat for Humanity, St. Matthew’s House and Mision Peniel with generous donations for Mision Peniel.

Radu Paponiu, conductor Dr. James Cochran, chorus director Experience the power of the 100-voice Naples Philharmonic Chorus as they present Handel’s masterful oratorio. A commentary on the life of Jesus Christ, Messiah remains Handel's bestknown work, with performances particularly popular during the Advent season. To commemorate the holiday season, the Chorus will perform the work they first performed together as an ensemble in 1991.
The Naples Philharmonic Youth Chorus, under the direction of Dr. James Cochran, presents a concert sure to uplift and inspire. The chorus is an auditioned choir of children ranging in age from 6 to 18. They rehearse weekly and perform annually at Holiday Pops and their Spring Recital at Artis— Naples. They also sing for community events and in concerts around the Naples area. They are the best young singers in our community. The concert will feature pieces in different languages, folk songs, music from several movies, and patriotic pieces. You will love seeing the joy that these children have while singing. Don’t miss the chance to hear 100 young musicians in this special concert.

In October FPCN provided 8 weekend food packs to needy children at our adopted school, Big Cypress Elementary, in Golden Gate. Thanks to everyone who has left their change in the CareBear to fund this project as well as many of you who have brought us the change you collect in that “little jar” on the dresser. It really adds up and goes to a wonderful cause. A special thanks to volunteers who are delivering the food packs to the school every Thursday. To participate, stop at the Mission Table in Spencer Hall. The Weekend PowerPack Program is a national program providing food packs to children who need them during the weekend. Teachers discreetly place the packs in the child’s backpack while they are at recess. —————————— On October 27 a busload of First Presbyterians traveled to Immokalee to work at the new Mision Peniel facility. Pastor Miguel advocates for the poor immigrant farmworker, holds church services each Sunday, and has a radio show. Our church collected donations of clothing, shoes, toiletries and household items, served hot meals, and passed out needed supplies. These people have very little and Hurricane Irma left many without homes or necessities. We are blessed to be part of this wonderful ministry supported by Peace River Presbytery. The Missions Committee thanks visitor Mary Kemp Clarke who went with us last Spring on our workday and was so touched by the work there that she collected many boxes of sheets and towels in La Grange Park, IL and had them shipped to us for Mision Peniel. Our next workday will be February 16, 2018. Come with us! Stop at the Mission Table if you have questions.
Please be part of the “Feed the 5000” food drive. The Shelter for Abused Women and Children will receive the food we collect this month. The Shelter works to prevent domestic violence, protects victims, and works to heal and improve lives. Suggested items are: Apple juice Sugar Powdered milk Pasta Pasta sauce Canned beans Canned fruit Peanut butter Jam or jelly Baby food or formula Canned tuna/chicken/meat Ushers will have a Publix bag available as you leave the Sanctuary on the first Sunday of November. Food donations will be collected at the 6th Street church entrance on the second Sunday. If you prefer, checks may be made payable to "First Presbyterian Church" with the memo marked "Feed the 5,000" and placed in the collection plate. Please, no open containers or out of date food.

What a pleasure to meet and visit with these fine high school seniors. Tommy’s Dad, Bob Humphrey, drove them over 600 miles from Woodstock, GA, about 30 miles north of Atlanta, to Naples. (I was unfamiliar with Woodstock; it is on I-575, after it splits northeastward from I-75 just above Marietta. It was recently one of the fastest growing suburbs in America.) They brought over a ton of food and other supplies, all collected by students at their school; this was spearheaded by the Student Service Committee, with Phil Hutton as President. I am told they have roughly 140 students on the Committee. Upcoming they will sponsor a fund raiser for fighting cancer, with members of the Atlanta Hawks coming to participate in a free throw contest. Presumably the Hawks will outshoot the high schoolers, even Nick (Deadeye) Slacanin!
These are terrific young men! Organizing a major collection effort, giving up a long weekend, and missing 2 days of school, to help strangers and victims of Hurricane Irma, goes way beyond the call of duty. We are fortunate that they discovered our church, and its connection with Mision Peniel, and were able to stay at our church. I am copying this note and the photos to them, and wish them Godspeed, and serious thanks on behalf of this church and the people of Immokalee. It was personally a privilege to get to know them, and I hope they found this remarkable humanitarian effort rewarding and worthwhile. The November Gathering will be our participation in the Thank Offering of Presbyterian Women which started in 1888. Our annual “thank offering to the Lord” continues to be a vital part of women’s giving to the PCUSA. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this important ministry. Grant recipients for this year include 10 in the US and 5 internationally with more than 40% of the funded projects for health ministries.
The GATHERING on Wednesday, December 6 will begin at 11:45 a.m. for punch and appetizers before the beautiful, annual Christmas concert by Brice Gerlach and Michele Byrd.

Preschool
Ashley Houk, Preschool Director, ashleyh@fpcnaples.org committee felt that our students would benefit from a meaningful opportunity to provide an outreach to the community in a way that they could most closely connect to-providing toys to children that are the same age as our students.
The beginning of the new school year was one greeted with excitement and anticipation. This excitement soon turned to concern when Hurricane Irma decided to throw a huge wrench in our plans. We hadn’t planned to be closed for 12 days (one in August due to local flooding and 11 days for the hurricane), we hadn’t planned on the lack of power that prevented us from reopening following the storm, we hadn’t planned to have to start from scratch and have, what was essentially, a second first day of school. But we did. Our staff and students have all returned and we are back on the road to “normalcy” again. Prior to Hurricane Irma, I had intentions to speak to the Preschool Parent Committee about adopting a classroom in Texas following Hurricane Harvey. The committee was scheduled to meet at the beginning of October, but the meeting was postponed in the wake Irma preparations. When we met in November, our focus changed. Instead of reaching out to Texas, we explored the opportunity to provide support to our local communities. The committee agreed to provide assistance to the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee. The Guadalupe Center operates 18 classrooms that provide care to 270 children that range in age from infancy through VPK. The
In lieu of our Fall fundraiser (Silent Auction) the committee agreed to accept donations of toys for the classrooms at Guadalupe Center. Through our communication with the Director of the facility, we had learned that toys were needed by the school to both rebuild what was lost during the hurricane and to replace toys that families lost in the storm. Our goal was to bring a smile to those student’s faces that have lost so much and to let the families know that they are thought of and valued by those in the community. During the Fall Festival we received hundreds of toys (see the picture on the right) and $359 to donate to the Center. The Preschool will also participate in a children’s book drive right before Thanksgiving. These books will also be donated to a child care facility in need of replacing materials that were lost in the storm. We will host our Silent Auction in the Spring. The Silent Auction benefits the Angel Fund which is used to provide scholarships to families in need, as well as provide curriculum enrichment opportunities. Angel Tree Each year we partner with Lipman Produce to help migrant farm workers families with gifts for Christmas. The Angel Tree tags will be available in Spencer Hall on Sunday, November 26. Please take the top tag which will have the gift recipient information. Complete the second tag with your name and phone number. Please leave THIS tag with us. Wrap the gift and securely attach the tag. Some gift ideas include learning toys, ethnic dolls, books, board games, puzzles, balls, roller skates, and craft kits. I want to express my appreciation for the Stephen Ministry visits during my 8+ months recovery from a fractured neck and other less traumatic conditions. Walt (Gadkowski) and several others certainly improved my moral during a difficult time. Their prayers were helpful and appreciative. It is nice to know that the Ministry is there for us when most needed. Thanks to all!
I would like to thank the church, Rev. Goodrich and the friends of John Nicholson for all their assistance, notes, cards and phone calls after John’s death. Our deacon, Pat Collins, was so helpful and caring. John loved First Presbyterian Church. We had been members since 1993, and we were sorry that we could not attend services very much this past year.
