From the Pastors Happy Thanksgiving!
While we look forward to the holiday at the end of the month, many opportunities for connecting and celebrating fill the church calendar in November.

In late winter, a group of
committed people started meeting and named itself “Faith Communities to End Homelessness” (FCEH). They are represented by individuals from 18 churches and a synagogue in Collier County.
Congregational conversations in Spencer Hall on Sunday, November 3, will follow the worship service. This event will build on the summer conversations and bring everyone up to date on vital ministries and mission.
FCEH keeps the faith communities informed of social issues and concerns that affect the local homeless population, as well as actions being taken to address them. Members attend regularly scheduled meetings to learn of these issues, concerns and actions. Peace River Presbytery will be hosted by First Presbyterian Church of Naples on Thursday, November 21. Thanksgiving Worship 11:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary and Thanksgiving Dinner, 12 p.m. in Spencer Hall. Plan to come and enjoy. Thank you for your prayerful support of all the ministries and missions of First Presbyterian Church.
This November FCEH will be participating in Homelessness Awareness Week. This involves homelessness awareness Sundays, an open house for the new youth drop-in center at Youth Haven, a mobile food pantry, a speaker at a Habitat for Humanity event and preaching and prayers in local churches. A community screening of an award winning documentary on homelessness will take place at 2 p.m. at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church on November 16.

ongregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes. Our congregation’s Stewardship Committee has selected the theme
“Receiving and Giving: Sharing God’s Gifts” as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year.
Receiving and Giving: Sharing God’s Gifts is based upon the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat each other as followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” During the 9:30 a.m. worship service on Stewardship Sunday, November 17, we are asking our attendees and members to make their financial commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world.

Every attendee and member who completes a pledge card does so voluntarily by attending morning worship on Stewardship Sunday. We urge people to attend who are uncomfortable completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card. We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship on Stewardship Sunday, Dr. Horne will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship.

A Service of Lessons and Carols with the Chancel Choir Sunday, December 8, 2013 4:00 p.m.
The Philharmonic Youth Chorus is an auditioned choir of children ranging from 6 to 18 years of age. They rehearse weekly and perform annually at Holiday Pops and their Spring Recital at Artis—Naples. They also sing for community events and in concerts around the Naples area. They are the best young singers in our community. The “trio of friends” from our first concert are the directors of this group. James Cochran is the Director, Brice Gerlach is the Assistant Director and Michele Byrd is the Singing-Skills Instructor. They work together to bring out the best in these musical children. This concert will feature folk songs, patriotic music, Disney classics and holiday tunes to get you in the mood for Christmas. You will be amazed at the talent these young people possess. They are truly exceptional!
The service of Lessons and Carols follows the traditional pattern of prayers, lessons and music made popular by King’s College in Cambridge, England. Once again we enter into the wellknown story of Christmas and are invited to hear the song of the angels, share in the wonder of the shepherds and resolve to be as persistent as the magi. Experience the hope and joy of rediscovering the miracle and wonder of Christmas as told through beautiful readings and cherished music of the season. Sing some of your favorite traditional carols such as O Come, All Ye Faithful, Hark! the Herald Angels Sing and Silent Night. The choir will present special Christmas anthems by living composers. American composers will be strongly represented with Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium, Dan Forrest’s A Christmas Lullaby, and Daniel Kantor’s Night of Silence. Also featured will be two anthems by Phillip Stopford, a young British composer; A Christmas Blessing and A Child is Born in Bethlehem. Come and remember the reason for the season!

Each Thursday the men’s HUDDLE group meets in Spencer Hall at noon for lunch and Bible Study. Bring your own lunch and join in the study of Second Samuel.
Adult Bible Study is held each Sunday from 8:30—9:15 a.m. in Room 204. The study begins on November 3 with the study of Acts. Please contact Gretchen Oakley at 239.591.3467 for more information. The book of Acts provides a detailed, orderly, eyewitness account of the birth and growth of the early church and the spread of the gospel immediately after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Its narrative supplies a bridge connecting the life and ministry of Jesus to the life of the church and the witness of the earliest believers. The work also constructs a link between the Gospels and the Epistles. In Acts, as Luke describes the spread of the gospel and the ministry of the apostles, he focuses primarily on two, Peter and Paul.

Yet another post was made by a friend of mine and reflected on an incident in which she observed two little girls playing in the Dramatic Play/Housekeeping area at a child care facility. The two girls were observed playing with baby dolls and were seen “spanking” the baby dolls using a flip flop. When my friend approached the children and began role playing with them saying “Ouch, don’t you hear the baby crying? I think that hurts her”, the children replied, “No, it doesn’t hurt, she was being bad”. Again, one must wonder what role models these children are exposed to daily.

November 6 for the perfect, personal tour of the Botanical Gardens in bloom from the comfort of your chair in Spencer Hall. We’ll get a preview of new plantings and activities planned for this “jewel” of Naples from our Botanical Garden personal tour guide. We will also share our Thank Offering Gifts. Since 1888, Presbyterian Women have expressed their gratitude for God’s blessing through these annual gifts. At least 40% of the donations are allocated to the programs that support health related projects throughout the world. All programs supported improve the lives of women and children.
All Veterans: On November 10 please accept a flag pin in appreciation of your service to our country from one of the Presbyterian Women members stationed at the entrances as you come to Sunday Service.
The planned menu is tuna salad on croissant, chips, and baked apple with ice cream. On December 4 attend our own wonderful Christmas Concert by Brice Gerlach and Michele Byrd. Beautiful sounds will surround us in our magnificent sanctuary. Reservations for the luncheon that follows may be made in Spencer Hall on November 24 and December 1. Our Christmas luncheon will include pork tenderloin, sugar peas, red potatoes, salad, garlic bread and Christmas Delight ice cream. If you are able to help this worthy program, pick up a Publix bag from an usher as you leave the Sanctuary on the first Sunday of the month. The bag has a list of desired food items. Bring your food contribution to the Sixth Street church entrance before the service on the second Sunday of the month.
The Mission Committee is planning a tour of the agencies we support in Immokalee. See what the preschoolers are doing. Hear about projects with the farm workers. Lunch? Of course (we’ll pass the hat to pay). And also a stop at the farmers’ market. Join us on Thursday, November 7. Charitable IRA Rollover Special Stewardship Opportunity? Someone once said that we are not measured by what we have, but by what we give. Thinking about that in our time of need, Jan and I have made a decision to prepay our 2014 Stewardship Pledge in 2013 using my Individual Retirement Account (IRA). You will want to check with your tax advisers and consider this special opportunity. It expires at the end of 2013. Here are the general rules: You must be age 70½ or older at the time of the gift. You may transfer up to $100,000 DIRECTLY from your IRA to a qualified charity (like First Presbyterian Church of Naples). You must make your gift by December 31, 2013. The good news is that this withdrawal from your IRA is not treated as taxable income on your 2013 tax return. Note: If you are eligible, I encourage you to look into this opportunity at your earliest convenience as there are some technical rules involving this IRA procedure. Our Director of Finance, Michele Martin (239.262.1311 ext. 242), would be pleased to talk with you about the specifics. Please consider giving generously to our church at this time (using this charitable IRA rollover legislation or by any other means). Annual Congregational Meeting The annual congregational meeting will be held following the worship service November 3 (financial update and election of Officers and Nominating Committee members).
