Rev. Craig Goodrich, Senior Pastor/Head of Staff Wow! I am learning about Naples and “The Season.” It seems strange to be saying goodbye to so many now each week, but we are grateful for the presence and participation of all in the life of our congregation over the last months.
In keeping with the practice of “looking back with gratitude” and “looking forward with hope,” I offer these reflections. For all of April we have been in the Easter Season, for Easter is more than just one day! In worship we have continued to sing Easter hymns. Many thanks to Brice Gerlach and our magnificent choir for leading us with inspiring music. Our sermons have focused on the post resurrection appearances of Jesus to the disciples including: Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb, the two disciples with burning hearts on the way to Emmaus and back, Thomas who, when Jesus appeared to him, proclaimed “My Lord and my God!”, breakfast on the beach with Jesus, and Jesus and Peter walking together and Jesus’ commands to “feed my sheep” and “follow me.” I have loved preaching this series! Our wonderful programs continued, many of which are winding up now: The HUDDLE, The Currents of Grace women’s class, Adult Bible Study and the Men’s Club. Presbyterian Women continued strong with circle meetings and their monthly luncheon. Mission was very active with a day at Habitat for Humanity and a trip to St. Matthew’s House. Youth and Children’s Ministry continues to meet and Shana Dublan has led our first Confirmation class in several years. Youth also participated in the Relay for Life fundraiser. Our Stephen Ministers have continued to visit those in the hospital and rendered compassionate care and our Deacons, under the leadership of Gary Root are caring for our members through their parishes and many other activities that help create our sense of community. We will be looking to expand the number of deacons in the coming months. Our new church directory has just been published. Many thanks to Joanne Slager, Kathleen Law and Jane Ruprecht who have led this effort. Our financial health has continued to improve, as we met our annual giving goals both in number of

pledges and dollars. The Generosity Campaign, chaired by Duncan Connell, raised $813,000 on 269 pledges. This along with unpledged gifts should enable us to meet our budget. While this is great news, I remind us that we are in the process of what is likely to be a several year process of eliminating our reliance on reserves to fund operations. By meeting our giving goals this year we have taken the first step, and in 2017 we hope to eliminate our deficit spending altogether. It will take all of us giving our best. On another financial note, we are grateful to Fred Garner and Linda Gadkowski who are leading our Planned Giving effort. You will be hearing more about this in the coming months, but for now we simply ask that you consider remembering the church in your estate planning. Looking ahead into May, we go to one service at 9:30 a.m. beginning Sunday, May 1 and will continue on this schedule until Sunday, January 8, 2017. We will receive new members on May 1, and on May 8 which is Mother’s Day, we will welcome our six young Confirmands into membership. I hope that in this Spring/Summer Season we will all have a time to go deeper in our faith, and to all our friends who have gone north, we pray that you are blessed in your home places. We will miss you and look forward to your return to your Naples home. Remember us in your thoughts and prayers, as we will remember you. For those of us who remain in Naples, I encourage you to reach out to people you know (or maybe do not know!) and invite them to worship and to be part of this community of faith and grace. You know, the personal invitation is the most effective form of evangelism. Just think of what this congregation means to you and what it could mean to others and invite away. Personally, as our pace now slows a bit, I am hoping in the months ahead to get to know you and Naples even better. One thing I know for sure, there is no place I would rather be than “in the heart of Naples with the love of God.” Gratefully and Faithfully,

They have each been accepted for music study in Europe this summer. The program will include opera arias, art songs and Broadway hits. A free will offering will be taken and the proceeds from this concert will help defray the costs of their tuition. Come and support these young musicians as they share their great musical talent with us! A reception will follow in Spencer Hall.

A BIG THANK YOU to the women of First Presbyterian Church for donating $7,670 towards our goal this year of raising $10,390. However, as you can see, we are $2,720 short of meeting our needs. Last year, your generosity enabled Presbyterian Women to send almost $11,000.00 to agencies locally, state wide, nationally and worldwide. If you have not made a donation in 2016, or you would like to donate an additional amount, it's never too late! To help us reach our goal, checks may be addressed to PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN and mailed or dropped off at the church. The check should be made payable to PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN and designated as "donation - 2016" on the memo line.

In May we gather food for The Shelter for Abused Women and Children. The Shelter works to prevent domestic violence, protect victims, heal and transform lives. Ushers will have a Publix bag with a list of desired food items available as you leave the Sanctuary on the first Sunday of the month. Please bring your food to the 6th Street church entrance before service on the second Sunday.
If you prefer, checks may be made payable to "First Presbyterian Church" with the memo marked "Feed the 5,000" and placed in the collection plate. STEPHEN MINISTRY People often ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?” One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the After People.
Stephen Ministers are there… ...after the phone call you hoped you’d never get. ...after the divorce papers are served and the bottom falls out of your life. ...after the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you. ...after the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there's nothing more we can do.” ...after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says, “Welcome to your new home.” ...after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away—and the house suddenly seems empty. ...after the gavel goes down, the handcuffs go on, and your loved one is led away. ...after the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible. ...after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck. ...after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out. Stephen Ministers are the “After People.” They are ready to come alongside you—or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives—and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed.

Once we understand the need, we'll try to match church volunteers having appropriate expertise with the person(s) having the need. The week of May 2 brings to us an opportunity to celebrate our staff at First Presbyterian Preschool. Teacher Appreciation week will be celebrated May 2 through May 6. The Preschool Parent Committee leads the charge on planning special events for the week. Each day, a special snack or goody will be provided by the parents of the students. Staff will enjoy bagels, coffee, fruit and yogurt parfaits, cupcakes, and a build your own nacho bar! Of course the big event of the week will be the lunch being hosted at 7th Avenue Social on Friday, May 6. The staff will enjoy the time to socialize with each other and will be presented with a special gift. We always look forward to the chance to be away from the school with one another, the memories we make and the laughs we share are good for the soul! FPP has a dedicated staff of 18 that make the school a blessing for the community of Naples. I personally would like to thank all of our staff for all that they do, the extra time they put into their classroom and their students, the

compassion and the care they show for their students, in addition to the education they provide.
