I believe we know that rhythm innately. At this time of year many of us go about a ritual of spring cleaning; our house, closet, garage. Worship is one of the most important things we do as Christians.

The music in the 10 a.m. service will be the same as it has been traditionally. In addition to the organ, our choir and soloists will help to lead worship.

We come together to worship each week I am excited about the service schedule since we will be providing more opportunities for people to join us and offer our best to God. By staying in worship and isn’t that what it’s all about? with our current worship times of 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., we will make it possible for more people to join us in worship. In addition, as people return to us in the fall, they will know that there will always be a service at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. The service at 8:30 a.m. will be a more casual but traditional worship service with me at the organ. Although the choir will not be with us, other musical offerings will be provided from time to time and the service will also be shorter in length. I encourage you to give our early service a try if it fits your schedule!

Men’s Breakfast Bible Study

Adult Bible Study is held each Sunday from 8:30—9:15 a.m. in Room 204. Please contact Gretchen Oakley at 239.591.3467 for more information. The book of Acts provides a detailed, orderly, eyewitness account of the birth and growth of the early church and the spread of the gospel immediately after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Its narrative supplies a bridge connecting the life and ministry of Jesus to the life of the church and the witness of the earliest believers.

Presbyterian Women Presbyterian Women will meet in Spencer Hall at noon on May 7 when Rev. Jonathan Evans will conclude our Circle Study for the year. The Coordinating Team will bring salads and desserts and everyone is to bring a sandwich to share which you will turn in to the kitchen crew when you arrive. No tickets will be sold as your sandwich is your ticket.

As season winds down, I am sure a lot of people are breathing a sigh of relief. However, for the Director of Children and Family Ministries, this is when things get busy! Summer is filled with many opportunities to grow and reach out to the kids who, during the school year, already have full calendars. I personally look at this time of the year with excitement and enthusiasm.

PARENT MEETING On Wednesday, May 7 I invite all parents of youth to come to the church at 6 p.m. and meet some of the amazing people who donate their time and talents to work with your children. You can also use this time to meet me if you have not already done so, and ask any questions you might have.

Now, while I have added some events over the summer for children, youth, and families, I did not take any of our regular events away. That’s right, YOUTH SING IN WORSHIP we will continue to have a multi-age Sunday Sunday, May 11 our youth will be singing in the School at the 10 a.m. service as well as regular 10 a.m. worship service. Kids will meet in youth meetings over the summer months. Spencer Hall at 9:30 a.m. I am, now more than ever, looking for help teaching Sunday School as well as volunteers for special events. The youth and I completed our 30 hour Famine last month, and I must say, it was truly an eye opening experience. I had never taken part in a 30 hour famine before and, really, the idea of not eating for 30 hours was not something I would have placed on my list of things to do. However, not only was it educational, with a comprehensive curriculum of videos and games about world hunger, but we really got a better understanding of what it would feel like to have to go without. WAY TO GO!!

We have raised $7,800 in three weeks for the youth trip to Montreat this summer for a youth Christian Development Conference. We are ¾ of the way to our goal, and I really cannot say thank you enough. High school can be a really difficult time in a young person’s life and opportunities like these can really help to keep them on the right path. While they are at Montreat they will be learning how God is always with us, and that through the highs and in the lows of their lives, they are never alone. Through your donations you are investing in that future for them…………….Thank you. If you have not had the opportunity to pick up an envelope or you would like to grab another one, we still have 50 available.

Easter Egg Hunt Fun!

Celebrating Easter with the Preschoolers Bunny ears and cotton tails, Easter bonnets, pastel colors, Easter Egg Hunts, even a visit from the Easter Bunny; these are items that you see this time of year at many preschools. But we take this time of year to also celebrate Jesus at First Presbyterian Preschool! While, yes, our children participate in the “typical” Easter type celebrationsmaking bunny ears and cotton tails to wear, Easter parties, etc.-we take this opportunity to share the story and celebration of Easter with our students. In Chapel this week, I asked the children which holiday we are currently celebrating and all were able to astoundingly respond, “Easter”. When then asked why we are celebrating Easter, one of the students, Carly S., was quick to respond, “Because Jesus died on the cross.” Often when discussing Easter with younger children, adults tend to try to simplify the story itself to avoid the discussion of death. I recently read an article that emphasized the fact that children can often handle subjects that adults find “tough” much easier than we anticipate. I then asked the

children if any of them knew why Jesus died on the cross. Sam S. replied, “To open the

gates of Heaven!”

We carried our lesson further and talked about how each one of us has made mistakes, that no one is perfect. Ally M. shared that she once was trying to write an “S”, but mistakenly made a “3” instead. We talked about how sometimes our mistakes include saying things that aren’t nice, taking a toy from a friend, hitting or pushing a friend, among other things. I explained that Jesus died on the cross so that when we make mistakes, we can ask to be forgiven; that once we make a mistake, we can pray to Jesus to ask that He forgive us. I brought with me some dirty pennies and we examined them and said that we were going to pretend that they were covered with mistakes (dirt and mold). We made a solution of salt and vinegar, which we called our “prayer solution”. Once placed in the vinegar solution, the pennies became shiny again, much like our mistakes are forgiven when we pray. Easter is an exciting time for our students and I feel blessed that our staff can share the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection with our students.

THE DEACONS’ FUND—OR— THOSE PINK PEW ENVELOPES What happens when someone in need comes to the door of the Church? How are the needs of the working poor, the homeless, and those just caught short by life and circumstances met…here at First Presbyterian Church of Naples? There was, of course, a time when pastors had a little stash of money or vouchers to meet these needs. But times have changed in many ways; not the least of which is the inability of a church to keep track of all the requests that come its way.

Now, when people show up at our door, we can refer them to an organization having the personnel and expertise to help for their immediate needs and who can screen folks and refer them to other agencies to help them get back on their feet. On Communion Sunday, when you put money in the pink envelope in the pew rack, the Deacons’ Benevolence Fund receives your donation and makes significant monthly contributions for the men, women and children who are in great need. It’s an efficient and effective way for our compassion to reach beyond our church into the community in which we live. Please remember to be as generous as possible on each Communion Sunday. Thanks for a successful season! First Presbyterian Church held three blood drives this season. We collected 73 pints of blood which means we saved 219 lives! Thank you for donating. Church Reception Desk The reception desk at First Presbyterian Church is staffed by several dedicated volunteers. However, during the summer months, our volunteer core decreases due to vacations, etc. Would you be interested in volunteering at the church? You can work as little as a few hours a month or a few hours a week. All you need is the ability to direct phone calls to the appropriate person or destination and use a multi-button phone system. Weâ€™ll show you how! Often we have small projects to work on to keep you busy when the phone is not ringing, but feel free to bring your latest novel, crossword puzzle, ipad, or newspaper! Feed the 5,000 Luke 9:10-17 During May, our food pantry contributions go to the Shelter for Abused Women and Children. The Shelter serves to prevent and prevail over domestic violence through advocacy and social change. The Shelter protects victims and helps to heal and transform lives. The Shelter for Abused Women and Children and the Missions Committee thank you for your support.

Our people serve on Boards, work with children, work in kitchens, food banks and thrift stores. We serve as mentors, aides, readers, and cooks. We paint and clean. Some of our parishioners also assist Salvation Army, Fun Time Academy, Neighborhood Health Clinic, Harry Chapin Food Bank, Mision Peniel and Boys and Girls Club.

Eighty bags of Food were gathered and $1,050 was contributed to the Feed the 5,000 fund. Jerry Miller and Michael Bennett helped get the bags ready and Bill Stafford, Tom Clark and John Nicholson did the loading. The HELPS OUTREACH folks were pleased with the results.

An Easter Remembrance Thank You Many thanks to everyone in the congregation for their help delivering gift mugs and visiting with all of our members who can no longer attend or come to services very often. I went to Naples Community Hospital on 3-11-14, had surgery and, then was sent to Glenview Rehabilitation on 3-26. In that time period, being alone, I cannot say how much my FPC family was of aid to me; Gary and Janet Root, Rev. Evans, Deacon Doris, members of Presbyterian Women, Sunshine Circle, plus many others that have sent cards. I love my Prayer Shawl with all the prayers knitted in it. It is always by my side.
