One way to understand “faith” is that it is a way of seeing. It is a way of seeing and believing that God is at work for good in all circumstances. If we have faith, we will be looking for what God is doing and what good can come. And we will seek to cooperate with God in this good work.
As we look ahead to March, we see great material for hope and joy. Ash Wednesday, which begins the season of Lent, is March 6 and we will gather for worship at 11:30 a.m. that day. We look forward to Brice’s Wednesday organ concerts and to Wednesday evening programming. March 10 is Presbyterian Women’s Sunday. Our Speakers’ Forum on Monday, March 11 will feature two people dear to me, my daughter Lara Goodrich Ezor and her husband Zack Ezor. They will speak about thruhiking the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails. On Saturday and Sunday, March 23-24 we will welcome back Dr. George Wirth for our Spring Focus This is the view taken by John Baillie, Scottish Weekend, and on Sunday, March 31 we will have pastor of the last century, in this prayer: our Annual Congregational Meeting. “Teach me, O God, so to use all the circumstances And there is much more! Please read thoroughly this of my life to-day that they may bring forth in me the edition of The Outreach and pay special attention to fruits of holiness rather than the fruits of sin. the opportunities to serve. Let me use disappointment as material for patience: So, where is God at work for good in your life? Let me use danger as material for courage: “Lord, help us to see and to work with you for the good. Amen.” Let me use reproach as material for longsuffering: Gratefully and Faithfully, Let me use praise as material for humility: Let me use pleasures as material for temperance: Let me use pains as material for endurance.” (From A Diary of Private Prayer, Day 24) You get the picture. Can you think of some more to add? Here are a few: Let me use fear as material for trust: Let me use conflict as material for understanding: Let me use frustration as material for prayer. What would you add? As we look back on the life of our congregation in February there is so much material for gratitude! We are now in the middle of “Season” and God is at work among us. We see it in worship, in mission, in our fellowship groups, in concerts, in Wednesday evening fellowship dinners and speakers, in our honoring General Presbyter Graham Hart as he retires, in our Generosity Campaign “Just Imagine,” in the Preschool full of children and joy, and in our youth now being led and encouraged by Nancy Van Fleet as well as Rex Childs, in our establishment of library space in the Parlor, in Speakers’ Forum, in strategic work facilitated by Gary Root, in a wonderful Mission Sunday, and in the celebration of the lives of our saints who have died, and in our proclaiming the love of God and our hope of the life to come. So much material for gratitude!

Lenten Organ Concerts Wednesdays March 13, 20, 27, 2019 April 3, 10, 17, 2019 12:00 - 12:30 p.m.
The spectacular Ruffatti pipe organ is featured in six Lenten organ recitals offered by our Director of Music, Dr. Brice Gerlach. In these informal concerts, Brice takes the time to explain some of the mechanical workings of the organ and offers some musical insights about the pieces on the program. Voices of Naples was formed in 2002 to provide an opportunity for singers in Naples and Collier County to study and perform a variety of choral music. They also have the mission of providing scholarships to deserving high school seniors in Collier and Lee Counties who wish to study vocal music and related studies in college. This concert features music composed and arranged by American composers including the debuts of several compositions specifically for Voices of Naples. The Voices of Naples are directed by Dr. Douglas Renfroe, a nationally acclaimed bass-baritone who has specialized in oratorio works and has performed throughout the United States and Europe. He received his undergraduate degree from Westminster Choir College, his graduate degree from Catholic University of America, and in 2004 was awarded an honorary Doctorate from the University of California. He has been a featured soloist and guest conductor with the Varna International Music Festival, including the Bulgarian premiere of Elijah in 2007, and the bass soloist in Voices of Naples’ annual “SingAlong Messiah” since 2006. Doug is the Artistic Director of Moorings Capital Opera. There is no charge for the concert. A free-will offering will be taken. Doors open at 3 p.m. A reception will follow in Spencer Hall.
Each concert opens with a piece that highlights the magnificent horizontal trumpets protruding from the front of the organ case. A work by J. S. Bach is always featured and arrangements of Lenten hymn tunes are presented, allowing for some of the diverse solo stops and softer sounds of the organ to be heard. The concerts will end with a rousing toccata, allowing the audience to hear the full power of the organ. After the recital, the audience is invited up to the console to ask questions and to see the beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship of the Ruffatti. Tours of the pipe chambers are also offered each week. Come hear beautiful organ music during Lent. Generosity Campaign Thank you to all of you who have turned in your pledges. To date, we have received 242 pledges for a total of $1,072,292, towards our goals of 300 pledges and $1,300,000. The numbers break out as follows: 108 households have increased their pledges from a total of $506,932 last year to $605,999 this year, or net increase of $99,067. That increase is 19.54 percent. There are 30 new pledges for a total of $75,440. 81 have pledged the same amount as last year for a total of $274,265. 23 have decreased their pledges from a total of $135,070 to $116,588, a net decrease over last year of $(18,482). If you have not turned in your pledge card, they can be placed in the offering on Sunday morning, brought to the church office, mailed or filled in online through our secure website. Thank you! “Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever.” Amen

God’s Will for FPC Going Forward Our Strategic Direction team is right in the middle of developing the first part of our three-pronged assignment…a Mission Statement. Following that, we will turn our attention to a Vision Statement and then Key Strategic Goals which follow from our Statements of Mission and Vision for FPC Naples.
We are finding The Book of Order to be a great resource for our work. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, March 7 from 3:30-5 p.m. in Spencer Hall, and anyone is welcome to join us.

Or, said another way, “What is the team are greatly appreciated. purpose of FPC Naples?” Most importantly, we are doing our humanly best to discern With much appreciation, God’s will. Or, “Would God agree that this Gary Root, Meeting Facilitator should be our purpose?” We are tackling the Mission Statement phase from different directions. A beginning step was to brainstorm words, concepts, and phrases that likely would be candidates for inclusion in a mission statement. Then, under considerable time pressure, each team member submitted a short FPC Naples Mission Statement of their own. In reviewing the submitted statements, the team agreed that they were all beautiful and on-target, and that God would be pleased with the various statements submitted. A second step that we’re now in the middle of has been to consult our PC(USA) Book of Order for guidance on the subject. The very first two paragraphs of the Book of Order offer some clues for our work, and a bit further in Chapter 1 “The Great Ends of the Church” are described. Readers may recall that Pastor Craig gave a 6 week sermon series last year on these “Great Ends” which are: 1. The proclamation of the Gospel for the salvation of humankind; 2. The shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God; 3. The maintenance of divine worship; 4. The preservation of the truth; 5. The promotion of social righteousness; and 6. The exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world.

Thanks to all who helped to provide a meal for the residents at St. Matthew’s House last month. Our cooks, choppers, scoopers and servers had an enriching experience as we enjoyed each other’s company and interacted with those who have sought shelter and safety at St. Matt’s. It’s not too late to sign up to serve at Misión Peniel on Friday, March 8. Before serving the farmworkers in Immokalee, we will sort clothing, bag groceries and package meals. When the doors open, we will welcome all who have come to the mission for dinner and some needed items, which we will help distribute. Bus transportation will be provided. New members, old members and friends of First Presbyterian Church Naples are invited to join us on Wednesday, March 27 when we visit three missions our church supports in Naples: the Neighborhood Health Clinic, St Matthew’s House, and Helps Outreach. The church bus will leave the parking lot at 9:10 a.m. for our first stop to see the new addition to the clinic and hear about ongoing and new services they offer to low income workers in Collier County. Our next stop will be at St. Matthew’s House for a tour of the shelter and lunch. Our final stop will be Helps Outreach, where food, clothing, and household goods are provided at no cost accompanied by a message of Christian love. Sign up in Spencer Hall. Questions? By new Stephen Minister, Karen Parker This coming June, my husband Roy and I will celebrate two anniversaries, our ninth year of marriage and a year since joining First Presbyterian Church of Naples. We became fulltime residents three years ago. After visiting several churches in the area we concluded that FPCN was the one for us. We felt a joy here in the worship service and in the people who welcomed us. Roy was drawn to the choir and readily accepted. I was pleased to find the Stephen Ministry display in Spencer Hall, because I had completed the training at our former church in Wichita, Kansas. My personal experience had drawn me to this Christian caregiving ministry. I had been my first husband’s caregiver and spent many hours in a hospital with him. At times while sharing a room or waiting for tests or therapies, there were others who were by themselves. I found it disturbing and would ask God to let them know they were not alone. Eventually, my husband died, and I became a grieving widow. It was a difficult time, but so
many supported me through it. My church family was especially cognizant of my needs. Ultimately, I felt my experience might help others; so, when invited to take the Stephen Ministry training, I accepted. In January I had another loss and turned to one of our Stephen Ministers knowing she would listen to my story, allow me to cry, and be here for me whenever needed. Each of us will have a time when we will need a Stephen Minister. They are here waiting to help.

Presbyterian Women
MARCH GATHERING Presbyterian Women look forward to a number of exciting events in March. All are welcome to join us on March 6 at 12 noon for the Gathering Luncheon. Our speaker will be Naples Daily News contributor Jeff Lytle with a program called “Highlights and History in SW Florida”. Jeff retired in 2014 after 35 years at the Naples Daily News. He served as editorial page editor and TV host for 25 of those years. He is a native of Altoona, PA, and a graduate of Penn State. Since retiring, he has worked with FGCU and the Naples Botanical Garden, and has volunteered with the Freedom Memorial, Community Foundation, Naples Senior Center and other good causes. And he still writes, for three local magazines.
This luncheon will follow the Ash Wednesday service in the sanctuary at 11:30 a.m. Reservations for lunch ($7) can be made in Spencer Hall on March 3. The long-time annual PW Birthday Offering w ill be collected at the March Gathering. This is a national PW effort where grants are given to worthy projects such as education, health care, and clean water programs in the U.S. and internationally. The tradition is to choose a unit of money (25 cents, $1, $5) and multiply it by your age to express how grateful you are for the blessings you have received from God. Checks may be made out to Presbyterian Women. Sunday, March 10 we look forward to celebrating Women’s Sunday. Come taste the homemade cookies and two delicious punch offerings. The Sew and Sews, Prayer Shawl ministry, WOW, and book clubs will have displays and

Our Sew and Sews’ sponsored “Coffee with Dr. Susan Wilson” earlier this month was very well attended and this amazing, dynamic doctor continues to share God’s love with those affected by the HIV crisis in Kagera, Tanzania. Happily we gave her 48 dresses for young girls lovingly made by our members. And, Presbyterian Women made a monetary donation to her cause. Our members continue to collect stamps which are sent to the Stamp Alliance in Fort Myers. There they are packed and shipped by a dedicated group resulting in monies used to purchase Sunday School curriculum in Spanish used nationally and internationally. Stamps can be placed in boxes located in Spencer Hall and in the church office.

Lara Goodrich Ezor and Zack Ezor met in sixth grade, and they've been on an adventure together ever since. In 2011, they hiked the 2,181-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, and in 2015, they hiked the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. Now, they like going on (shorter) day hikes on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail which runs across North Carolina. When they're not hiking, Lara teaches yoga and dance classes around Durham, and Zack is a third-year student at Duke Law. March 25 John Geshay
The men’s lunch-time Bible discussion group meets each Thursday from noon to 1:15 p.m. in Spencer Hall. All men are invited and encouraged to bring a bag lunch, a Bible, and gather with us.
Church member, John Geshay, is owner and president of Geshay Associates Inc. John’s firm has been providing architectural services in Collier County for over 30 years, including commercial businesses and residential homes. John has been the architect for the last two renovations in our church which included Spencer Hall, upstairs offices and the ladies restroom in the Narthex.

The Memorial Garden
provides a place of beauty and peace to house the columbarium for the interment of ashes for those who choose this method of burial.
A Memorial Garden is a wall of niches for urns containing the ashes of loved ones. The reservation of niches, like the reservation of cemetery plots, provides the funds for perpetual care and improvement. The Memorial Garden is available for interment for members of The First Presbyterian Church of Naples and their families. Any other person, regardless of race, color, or national origin, may use the Memorial Garden based on availability and approval by the Facilities Committee. Anyone desiring to purchase a Burial Right in the Memorial Garden, either for immediate use or as a Preneed Contract, must submit a written application.
