One of the devotions I read daily is Presbyterian minister Eugene Peterson’s Praying with Jesus. In a recent entry he writes that “religion” should not be “a safe manageable morality,” but a “reckless adventurous life commitment.” And then this prayer: “I do not want to be a religious bookkeeper, Lord, but a faith explorer, ready to take risks without counting the cost, ready to love without taking out insurance against suffering, ready to plunge into obedience without calculating my rewards.” I love that prayer and I sense that this is what is happening among us, we are being and becoming “faith explorers.” That is my hope for each one of us and all of us together! What a month this past month has been! The highlight was our 65th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, February 12. (See the wonderful photo spread on pages 8 and 9). We welcomed back our beloved Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Russ Mase, and his wife Carmen. Russ preached a great sermon in which he challenged us “to be a verb!” Our mayor, Bill Barnett delivered a proclamation naming February 12 as “First Presbyterian Church of Naples Day” and presented us with a key to the city, a first for a faith community. We heard greetings from our General Presbyter, Graham Hart and a delightful historical note from Pat and Bill Barton. Finally, we dedicated our Christian Education building and named it the “Mase Christian Education Center” in honor of Dr. Russ Mase and acknowledged the gift, given by Arlene and Jerry Nichols years ago, that made it possible. Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make this a wonderful day, and especially to Jan Garner and Andie Goodrich, co-chairs of the 65th Anniversary Committee.

We are in full Season now and traffic abounds! But there is so much for which to be thankful and to which to look forward. I am thankful for every member of our amazing “support staff,” that serves our congregation so faithfully. Please take some time to review their photos and information on page 14. And when you see them, please thank them for their incredible dedication. We are approaching the seasons of Lent and Easter and you will see the special services listed and the preaching schedule on page 4. I am excited about the sermon series “The Gifts of God.” Also note that on March 18 and 19 we will be having what we are calling our “Spring Focus Weekend” with a special Saturday morning time led by Dr. George Wirth, “The Gifts of God for All the Seasons of Our Lives.” George is the Pastor Emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. We served there together for over 20 years. On March 19, George will be preaching the sermon “The Gift of Change: Every Exit is Also an Entrance.” Also during Lent we will be gathering on Wednesday evenings, beginning March 8 for fellowship and programs. (Page 12). And don’t miss our musical offerings, including the weekly Lenten organ concerts (now a Naples tradition!) performed by the one and only Brice Gerlach. (Page 3). Mission, youth and educational activities continue to abound and all are described in these pages. I hope you will not only read about them, but become an adventurous “faith explorer” and participate with joy. A Season of Music Seraph Brass
Lenten Organ Concerts

Seraph Brass is dynamic brass quintet drawing from a roster of America’s top female brass players. Committed to engaging audiences with captivating programming, Seraph Brass presents a diverse body of repertoire that includes original transcriptions, newly commissioned works, and well-known classics. Recently, Seraph commissioned and premiered “Wolf” for solo soprano and brass quintet from Philadelphia-based composer, Joseph Hallman and has had several arrangements made by trumpeter Jeff Luke and composer Thomas Oltarzewski.
The concert will include arrangements of works by Albeniz, Grieg, Debussy, Mozart, and Liszt. Specific works to be included are Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, Debussy's Clair de lune, and Mozart's Queen of the Night Aria.
The spectacular Ruffatti pipe organ is featured in six Lenten organ recitals offered by our Director of Music, Dr. Brice Gerlach. In these informal concerts Brice takes the time to explain some of the mechanical workings of the organ and offers some musical insights about the pieces on the program. Each concert opens with a piece that highlights the magnificent horizontal trumpets protruding from the front of the organ case. A work by J. S. Bach is always featured and arrangements of Lenten hymn tunes are presented, allowing for some of the diverse solo stops and softer sounds of the organ to be heard. The concerts will end with a rousing toccata, allowing the audience to hear the full power of the organ. After the recital, the audience is invited to ask questions and view the beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship of the Ruffatti. Tours of the pipe chambers are also offered each week. Come hear beautiful organ music during Lent. Don't miss these special opportunities for personal reflection, meditation, and celebration of this holy season.

Be on the church bus when it leaves at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14 for visits to three agencies that FPCN supports. The first stop will be Grace Place to meet their new director, see how the campus has expanded, and hear about their work in Golden Gate. Next, we are off to St. Matthew’s House to tour the shelter, learn about their addiction programs, and enjoy lunch. Our final stop will be The Shelter for Abused Women and Children where we will hear of the many ways they are working to stop abuse and to provide a safe place for those who need it. We will return to the church about 2:15 p.m.
You will be amazed at the ways these three agencies are reaching out to needy people in Naples and the successes they are achieving by helping them find better lives. The Mission Committee invites you to join us and be inspired. Sign up in Spencer Hall or call the church office.
Volunteers are needed on Friday mornings in April to pick up 12 power packs at the church and deliver them to Big Cypress Elementary School. These packs include nutritious snacks and food items for students in need of extra nourishment on the weekends. This Weekend Food Power Pack program is funded by our Care Bear, who can be found in Spencer Hall, usually somewhere near the coffee, and welcomes donations of coins and bills! You can adopt this special bear for a month. Responsibilities include counting and securing currency after the second service, taking the Care

Bear home for the week, and bringing the bear back the following week near the end of the first service, ready for more donations for this worthy project. Sign up for Power Pack Delivery or Care Bear at the Mission Table in Spencer Hall or contact Shirley Hagerson.
Feed the 5,000 Food is gathered in March for St. Matthews House. St. Matthews House provides food for the hungry, housing for the homeless, and an opportunity to change lives for the better, in a disciplined, compassionate, spiritual environment. Suggested items are: coffee sugar powdered milk pasta pasta sauce cans of fruit cans of vegetables cans of soup cans of beef stew or spam Ushers will have bags with the food list available as we leave the Sanctuary on March 5. Please return them to the Sixth Street church entrance before service on Sunday, March 12. If you prefer, checks may be made payable to "First Presbyterian Church" with the memo marked "Feed the 5,000" and placed in the collection plate.

Can you hear Jesus’ words of comfort?
Did you know that First Presbyterian Church has a Memorial Garden? It is located on the outer wall of the sanctuary on the west side of the building.
In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus tells his followers: “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Do you feel weary? Does your yoke of life seem difficult for you to carry alone? Are your burdens too much to bear? God has called some people within our midst to Stephen Ministry. These people are trained and supported in walking with others through difficult times in their lives. Could you or someone you know benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister? The students at First Presbyterian Preschool have had an exciting month! February brought with it cooler temperatures and special guests. We often invite special guests to join us as our day is
short and our transportation options limited.
February was National Dental Health Month so one of our visitors was a representative from Children’s Dentistry of Naples. Ms. Cynthia joined us and talked with each of our classes about how important it is to brush our teeth regularly and to eat healthy foods while limiting our sugary foods. Following the presentation, each student got a new toothbrush to take home with them.
Farmer Minor joined us to speak with our students about the excitement and importance of reading. And Farmer Minor brought some very special friends along for his visit. Daisy, Farmer Minor’s pet pig, joined in on the fun, too. He encouraged the children to “Pig Out” on reading!
Each month, we also enjoy a special visit with the librarian. During these visits, we dance, sing and read with the librarian. We also enjoy visits to the library for story time each month. Bringing in members of our community provides us with a chance to discuss the meaningful ways that we interact with those members of our neighborhood and introduces the children to different careers and interests. At other times of the year, we also invite the Fire Department to join us. Help us get to Montreat! This summer, the youth are super excited to return to Montreat, North Carolina, to join with others for a life changing conference! This conference aims to challenge and empower students and leaders to discover their gifts so that together we can reach out and be the church in the world. Many of our youth have attended a Montreat conference (or three!) before and are looking forward to reuniting with friends. On March 5 we will kick off our 144 Fundraiser. Never participated in a “144” event before? No problem! Just stop by the table and pick up the envelope with the number on it that corresponds with a dollar amount you are able to donate to our youth. If you can donate $6 please pick up envelope #6 – if you can donate $74, feel free to pick up envelope #74, and so on. Also, make sure when you return your envelope to the Church that you write your name and address on it so that the youth can recognize your gift and send out a thank you. You can return your envelope to the front office or drop it in the offertory on a Sunday morning.

Thank you all for your participation!! This year’s Vacation Bible School, Maker Fun Factory will take place July 10-14. It’s a very fun and busy time for the Christian Education Ministry. We rely on a core group of volunteers to help camp run smoothly, so this year we are having a “Come In and See” day. On Sunday, March 26 following each worship service, Please make your way to the Youth Room on the second floor of the Mase Christian Education Center and learn how GODAWSOME it’s going to be. Be one of the first to sign up for volunteering and learn a little about our VBS theme. We will have area-specific training closer to Vacation Bible School.

Men’s Morning Fellowship
A Ministry of Encouragement
Men of First Presbyterian Church are invited to a new program that will deal with a man’s relationship with God and church, to include building a strong fellowship with all participants. Meetings take place from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month and are led by Rev. Craig Goodrich. All men are welcome to any session. COMMUNION COURSE
This one hour financial workshop will be taught by church member, Linda Gadkowski M.Ed., a Certified Financial Planner who combines 25 years of experience and 11 years of teaching financial planning at Northeastern University, Boston.
All ordained elders and deacons are invited to an instructional overview of communion. The instruction will be held on Tuesday, March 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary.
This program is designed to enable you to review your financial picture and better understand your financial future. Join us on Friday, March 10 at 12 noon in the Conference Room. There is no charge and open to the public. This will include a 20 page workbook. Contact Loida at 239.262.1311.

“State of the Agency” Sheriff Rambosk will speak on how we make this a safe community and he includes recommendations on safety and security for Collier County residents based on local and national events. Question and Answer time will follow.

Col. Robert S. Troth USA, Retired “Islam Today: Sunni and Shi’a” Colonel Robert S. (Rusty) Troth retired in 1992 after thirty years of active Army service. He was a career Military Intelligence officer who monitored and analyzed worldwide threats to U.S. national security and safety of the Armed Forces, including those presented by terrorist violence. He received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT, and an M.A. degree in Political Science and Russian Area Studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In his professional life, Colonel Troth first focused on the Muslim world during the Israeli-Egyptian war of 1973 and again in 1979 with the occupation of the U.S. Embassy in Teheran and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, providing analyzed intelligence to senior officers. He continued to follow events in the Muslim world for the rest of his active duty career. Following the 9/11 attacks, he began a detailed and continuing study of the history of Islam and the range of Islamic beliefs. He is an active member of the Naples Council on World Affairs, Greater Naples Leadership, and Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church. He is also the current Chair of the Board of Directors of Fun Time Early Childhood Academy.

The Support Staff of First Presbyterian Church of Naples Some of you may not be familiar with our support staff and we’d like to introduce you to them and tell you a little about what each person is responsible for in the daily operations of our church and preschool.
Administration Loida Garcia Receptionist Loida is the friendly person who answers the phone and welcomes you to the church office. Besides directing callers, Loida updates the church membership database, is liaison for Congregational Care /Stephen Ministers with the hospital, maintains the flower dedication book including the flower delivery schedule for Deacons. Loida is also responsible for incoming mail, nametags and dvd orders.

Education Jen Breen Admin. Assistant to Christian Education Jen works directly with our Director of Children and Family Ministries, Shana Dublan. Jen makes sure all the paperwork is in order for youth outings and events such as First Friday’s, helps make arrangements for youth trips and keeps the CE office running smoothly. Jen can be found on the second floor of the Mase Christian Education Center.

Facilities Marc Donnell Maintenance & Custodian Marc puts his years of construction experience to good work around our campus. He’s an excellent handyman and helps with custodial duties including set up, cleaning and other needs we may have around the church and preschool.
Sandy Poore Facilities Director Sandy makes sure our beautiful church facility is running in tip-top shape. Her responsibilities include the scheduling of maintenance for the air conditioners (all 33 of them), the church bus, electrical, plumbing and landscaping. Sandy also maintains the church calendar which includes booking rooms and resources for meetings and events. With 36 years of service to the church, she can tell you where just about anything is stored and how long its been there!
