It is the Season – the season of Lent, those 40 days, excluding Sundays, which begin on Ash Wednesday and conclude on Easter, the day of Resurrection. Lent is a time of introspection and reflection, a time to go deeper in our faith and draw closer to God through prayer and other spiritual disciplines. Although it may seem a bit incongruous in this other “Season” which can be so busy, I do hope you will take the time to slow down and to pray, to reflect upon your life and receive the grace of God in Jesus Christ. Looking back over the last month there has been much activity in the life of our congregation. And much for which to give thanks. The Preschool has celebrated its 50th anniversary. Just think of the thousands of children who have learned of the love of God in this place. What a wonderful ministry! Thanks to Preschool Director, Ashley Houk for her leadership and to her great team.

On a personal note, the Installation service on February 14 (I love that it was Valentine’s Day!) was wonderful with representatives from Peace River Presbytery, our preacher, Dr. George Wirth who preached the sermon, “The Perfect Church” and my brother Rev. Tom Goodrich who gave the charge (or as he said the “jolt” to me). I am grateful, so grateful to be your pastor. As we look ahead through Lent to Easter, which is March 27 this year, programs mentioned above continue. Other highlights include our Celtic themed Congregational Dinner on Saturday, March 5 and Meals of Hope on Saturday, March 12. Season of Music concerts on Sunday, March 6 and organ concerts by Brice each Wednesday in March. We will celebrate Maundy Thursday with a service in the Sanctuary on March 24 at 7 p.m., followed by our Good Friday service at noon and Easter services at 7:30, 8:30 and 10 a.m. Please review the calendar for these and other events.

Over 400 attended the organ and piano recital offered by Brian Jones and Bruce Adami. Our Sunday morning music continues to be hugely inspiring, thanks to Brice Gerlach and the choir. Worship attendance is increasing. Other programs abound: the Men’s Club, Presbyterian Women’s Gathering, Youth Group, a new Confirmation Class. Mission activities have included Habitat for Humanity and a work day at Mision Peniel. Our Deacons and Stephen Ministers continue to offer compassionate care and the love of Christ daily.

Praised by Palm Beach Daily News as a pianist who “has a fluent technique, sensitive musicianship and a probing intellect,” Dr. Catherine Lan is a winner of competitions including University of Miami Concerto, Golden Key International Honour Society Performing Arts Showcase Award, Duane Wilder Award for Excellence in Harpsichord Playing, Canadian Broadcast Corporation National Debut, University of British-Columbia Concerto, Richmond Festival Gala Grand Prize, and the nationwide Concours de Musique du Canada. Currently on faculty at Palm Beach Atlantic University and Broward College, Dr. Lan also performs with Chrysalis Chamber Players, Palm Beach Symphony, and Atlantic Classical Orchestra. The theme for this concert will be the music of Frederick Chopin and will explore the many different styles of Chopin including noturnes, waltzes, mazurkas and etudes. Come hear our wonderful Blüthner grand piano played by a master!
The spectacular Ruffatti pipe organ is featured in Lenten organ recitals offered by our Director of Music, Brice Gerlach. In these informal concerts Brice takes the time to explain some of the mechanical workings of the organ and offers some musical insights about the pieces on the program. Each concert opens with a piece that highlights the magnificent horizontal trumpets protruding from the front of the organ case. A work by J. S. Bach is always featured and arrangements of Lenten hymn tunes are presented, allowing for some of the diverse solo stops and softer sounds of the organ to be heard. The concerts will end with a rousing toccata, allowing the audience to hear the full power of the organ. After the recital, the audience is invited to view the console, to ask questions and to see the beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship of the Ruffatti. Tours of the pipe chambers are also offered each week. Come hear beautiful organ music during Lent. Don't miss these special opportunities for personal reflection, meditation, and celebration of this holy season.

When inheriting an IRA there are many traps to avoid such as failing to take required distributions, titling the account improperly and failing to name contingent beneficiaries. Check with your tax advisor/legal advisor to avoid problems (and possible penalties).
Please remember, prior to donating stock to the church, it is important to contact Sharman Pfaus at 239.262.1311 or sharmanp@fpcnaples.org to make her aware that a donation will be forthcoming. Not all proceeds the church receives from a bank or broker have a donor name included.
IRA THOUGHTS
Late last year Congress passed and made permanent the provision permitting IRA owners 70 1/2 years of age and older to donate as much as $100,000 a year directly to charity. This also counts as part of the owner’s annual required distribution. This can help and/or reduce income taxes and adjustments on Social Security and Medicare because the IRA contribution does not count as income. As an example, assume your required IRA distribution amount is $25,000. With a donation to the church of $10,000, only the remaining $15,000 will be taxed from the IRA. Also, if your IRA is used to make charitable contributions, many taxpayers also take advantage of the standard deduction on their tax returns. A double benefit!

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN’S GATHERING LOOKING FORWARD The March Gathering will be held on Wednesday, March 3 at noon in Spencer Hall. Local artist, Muffy Clark Gill, will exhibit and demonstrate her unique process of Batik painting on silk. Muffy spent the month of December, 2015 in Indonesia, Myanmar, Korea and Singapore. While visiting Circle

Indonesia she added to her knowledge of Batik by visiting various manufacturers and museums that specialized in the Batik painting process. When she is not traveling and creating works of art, Muffy shares her home in Naples with her husband, Warren and their 3 Scottie dogs plus Frack the cat. e are pleased to be participating in the One Great Hour of Sharing again this year. How many times can we look at Syrian refugees as well as others around the world and not feel like we should do something? One Great Hour of Sharing started with a radio campaign that lasted one hour to raise one million dollars to help refugees. It is an ecumenical Christian movement of which we as Presbyterians have participated for many years. It’s goals are water treatment, hunger relief, teaching families to care for themselves, and disaster assistance. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is completely funded by our One Great Hour of Sharing Offering.

The authors suggest that statements such as these recognize the grieving process is a painful process unique to each individual. They validate the need to grieve. After all, grief is denied is grief delayed. Nor can grief be hurried. Eventually, the person experiencing loss probably will want to share thoughts about God’s role in healing. But our job as comforter is to offer a measure of God’s love by being present in the various stages of the grief journey. We provide care while God heals.

Preschool
Recently, the Preschool celebrated their 50th anniversary! It’s hard to believe the establishment that was created back in 1965 to care for the children of this community is still going strong. To the best of my historical research abilities, I have learned that First Presbyterian Preschool started as a program serving children ages three and four years old. Later down the road, a Mother’s Morning Out program was added that would serve younger children (2 years old). Eventually, as more time went by, the Mother’s Morning Out program was incorporated into the Preschool program and included an age group to serve children as young as 18 months.

Based on the generosity of these families and businesses, everyone that attended had a fantastic time. It was truly rewarding to be able to utilize the services of other local businesses, giving us the ability to work hand in hand to provide an evening of fun for our families and our community. The Preschool looks forward to many more years of caring for and educating the young children of Naples.
We still find ourselves serving the same families that were served by the Preschool years ago. Some of our parents were once students and now bring their children into our care. We’ve experienced grandparents explaining that they remember dropping off their daughters and sons, and now participate in drop off or pick up duties with their grandchildren. To help celebrate this momentous anniversary, the Preschool Parent Committee planned our anniversary celebration that was held on February 20. During this event, an outdoor movie screen was erected in the parking lot and everyone was invited to an outdoor movie night featuring the hit movie “Happy Feet”. The movie equipment and services were donated by Happy Fox Movie Company. Musical entertainment was provided by DJ Crazy X. Willis and Davidow also participated in sponsoring the event. Members of the Parent Committee were also able to secure the Boys and Girls Club Blue CanTEEN food truck and a local ice cream vendor. And to top it all off, a balloon artist was present.

Family, children and youth Events FIRST FRIDAY PARENT’S NIGHT OUT
Come one, come all! On Friday, April 1 we will be holding a “Toy Story” themed First Friday event. There will be fun games, a movie, and a relevant Bible lesson! For only $20 a family, children will have an awesome time, and parents will be free for a night out while their children learn something! The menu for this event will consist of: Dino chicken nuggets, crinkle fries, and mandarin oranges. Event time: 5:30—8:30 p.m. Registration forms are available online, in the Christian Education, Preschool or church offices. Registration deadline is Friday, March 25.
March Happenings Thursday, March 17—Youth Group for any age/grade will not be held due to Spring Break. Palm Sunday, March 20—The Children’s Choir will perform during the 10 a.m. worship service and we will have a youth liturgist. Saturday, March 26—Youth are invited to participate in a Color Run in Ft. Myers. Transportation will be provided. Sign up with Shana in advance. Easter Sunday, March 27—An Easter Egg Hunt will be held following the 10 a.m. service. Candy donations are needed to make this a success! Please drop off candy to either Spencer Hall or the Church office.
On Friday, April 15 Relay for Life will be held at the Gulfview Middle School sports field. We are looking for a team to participate in this incredibly inspirational fundraiser. This year we would like to provide food for guests to purchase and help raise money for Relay for Life. We would love your help in this endeavor. Staying overnight is optional.
Montreat Fundraiser The Youth Group is raising funds for their annual trip to Montreat, NC. If you picked up an envelope already, please return it through the offering plate or to the church office.

Currents of Grace: Claiming Spiritual Gifts for Abundant Living A new Women's Class led by Andie Goodrich and Pat Nordbrock. This six-session series beginning Thursday, March 10, will focus on living more fully as the women we were created to be and what both hinders and encourages the stream of God's grace in and through us. Together we'll explore the themes of our identity as God's beloved children, our unique gifts and purpose in the world, deepening spiritual practices, growth and letting go in seasons of change, the challenge of grief and loss, and belonging and serving in community. Each class will be Biblically grounded in a Gospel parable or story of Jesus' ministry and will include a time of teaching, personal story and small group reflection. We’ll gather at 9:15 a.m. for coffee and fellowship, and each meeting will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. in Spencer Hall. To participate, we ask that you are able to attend a majority of the sessions to support the continuity of the small groups. We hope to see you there! Come and learn about managing your money. WOMONEY (Women and Money), a two-part seminar for all, will be given in Room 203 on Friday, March 11 from 12 - 2 p.m. The first hour will be facilitated by Linda Gadkowski, a certified planner with 25 years of experience. The second half of the seminar will be led by Kris Kaltenborn, portfolio manager from Northern Trust Bank, who will be discussing FPCN’s endowment investments, estate planning and opportunities for gifting to the church. You will receive a 25-page workbook covering all aspects of financial planning. There is no charge for the event. Bring a bag lunch. Prayer Shawl Ministry The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets each Tuesday in the Youth Room from 9—11 a.m. All are invited!
They knit and crochet beautiful shawls that are given to those going through life-changing health issues and more. Each shawl is blessed before its given to a recipient. To date we have distributed 70 prayer shawls.

Alan Weiss President and CEO NCH Healthcare System Naples Community Hospital Dr. Allen Weiss was appointed President and CEO of the NCH Healthcare System in September, 2006. Previously, he was President for over six years. He is responsible for a 715 bed, twohospital integrated health care system in Naples, Florida. NCH is one of only thirty hospitals in the country affiliated with Mayo Clinic. NCH has been named three times by U. S. News and World Report as best in the region and among the fifty best cardiovascular programs according to Truven based on objective data.

Myra Daniels Founder and Former CEO Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts (now Artis-Naples) “How I flunked at retirement” Myra Daniels founded her own advertising firm in 1965, making her the first woman in the country to head a major ad firm. The Advertising Federation of America named her its National Advertising Woman of the Year that same year. In 1991, The News-Press named her its Person of the Year for her accomplishments with The Phil. Daniels retired in 2011 but has stayed busy with many projects in the Naples area.

Easter Egg Hunt All children are invited to join us on Easter Sunday, March 27, following the 10 a.m. service for an exciting Easter Egg Hunt. Bring your baskets to fill with goodies! Candy donations to fill the Easter Eggs are now being accepted in the Church office and Spencer Hall. Small individually wrapped candies are preferred: mini or bite size candy bars, small chocolate eggs, etc.
